HOLY VIRGIN OF GUADALUPE, QUEEN OF THE ANGELS AND MOTHER OF THE AMERICAS. WE FLY TO YOU TODAY AS YOUR BELOVED CHILDREN. WE ASK YOU TO INTERCEDE FOR US WITH YOUR SON, AS YOU DID AT THE WEDDING IN CANA. PRAY FOR US, LOVING MOTHER, AND GAIN FOR OUR NATION AND WORLD, AND FOR ALL OUR FAMILIES AND LOVED ONES, THE PROTECTION OF YOUR HOLY ANGELS, THAT WE MAY BE SPARED THE WORST OF THIS ILLNESS. FOR THOSE ALREADY AFFLICTED, WE ASK YOU TO OBTAIN THE GRACE OF HEALING AND DELIVERANCE. HEAR THE CRIES OF THOSE WHO ARE VULNERABLE AND FEARFUL, WIPE AWAY THEIR TEARS AND HELP THEM TO TRUST. IN THIS TIME OF TRIAL AND TESTING, TEACH ALL OF US IN THE CHURCH TO LOVE ONE ANOTHER AND TO BE PATIENT AND KIND. HELP US TO BRING THE PEACE OF JESUS TO OUR LAND AND TO OUR HEARTS. WE COME TO YOU WITH CONFIDENCE, KNOWING THAT YOU TRULY ARE OUR COMPASSIONATE MOTHER, HEALTH OF THE SICK AND CAUSE OF OUR JOY. SHELTER US UNDER THE MANTLE OF YOUR PROTECTION, KEEP US IN THE EMBRACE OF YOUR ARMS, HELP US ALWAYS TO KNOW THE LOVE OF YOUR SON, JESUS. AMEN.

Pentecost They were all filled with the Holy Spirit. (Acts 2:4)

Before Jesus ascended into heaven, he told the apostles that they would be “baptized with the holy Spirit” (Acts 1:5). So together with Mary, they “devoted themselves with one accord to prayer” (1:14). And sure enough, the Holy Spirit came—with wind and fire and with a new boldness to preach the gospel. Pentecost tells a beautiful story about God’s power and the apostles’ transformation. But they didn’t receive the Spirit just that one day. They were immersed in the Spirit again and again. The Book of Acts records at least seven times that the apostles were “filled” with the Spirit (Acts 2:4; 4:8, 31; 6:8; 7:55; 13:9, 52). And this doesn’t count all the other times that never made it into the Bible! The same is true for us. Although we received the Holy Spirit in Baptism, we too need more of the Spirit’s power and gifts to follow the Lord and proclaim the good news. Jesus knew how much we would need the Holy Spirit, and so even long before his Ascension, he encouraged his disciples to pray for this gift: “If you . . . know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit?” (Luke 11:13). And John’s Gospel assures us that God “does not ration his gift of the Spirit” (3:34). There is always more that God has for us! Today, follow the apostles’ example. Believe in God’s promise of the Spirit and then pray for it. Keep praying, not just on this special feast, but every day. You might even ask a few faith-filled friends to pray with you for a new outpouring of the Spirit in your life. You may not see wind or fire, but the Spirit will come to you in new, unexpected, and even extraordinary ways—not only for your benefit, but for the good of his body, the Church!

“Holy Spirit, make your home in my heart, today and every day.”

FEATURED ON THE COVER: Saint Joan of Arc, The Maid of Orléans, Secondary patron of France and Secondary Patron of the Little French Church. Look closely at the image of the banner. Inscribed along with the fleur-de-lis, is it the word Mariae? In the corner is a detail from the cartouche depicting her being burned at the stake as she gazes upon a cross below the stained glass window of Joan. Center image is the statue of the young maid that is in the Parish Hall. “The moment in which Joan hears the Voices and sees the Vision calling her to the defense of her country.” It was a gift in 1987 from parishioner Mel Therrien (†August 9,1997). It was first located in the Winter Chapel (where the Triptych is currently displayed). It took 8 men and lots of ingenuity to move it to the parish hall in 1998 as renovations began in the chapel. The statue based on the original (1870) by Henri Chapu (1833-1891) in the Luxembourg, Paris.

NOTANDA: The feast of Saint Joan of Arc, May 30th is not on the American Calendar (nor is St. Catherine Labouré, St. Bernadette, St. Genevieve, or Blessed Isabelle of France). Saints Joan, Catherine, Genevieve and Blessed Isabelle are all featured in the Triptych with Our Lady of Mercy in the Winter Chapel. There is also an M painted in Joan’s Banner. Artist Merry DeCourcy. St. Joan of Arc, pray for us.
