Waterton HAS Got Talent!
Well done to all the
children who performed at
Waterton’s Got Talent!
On Tuesday 6th March 2018,
Waterton Academy Trust were
united in solidarity as the show
that the schools within the trust
have worked so long and hard
to prepare for was finally upon
us – Waterton’s Got Talent!
It was an outstanding effort to
logistically organise a show of
this magnitude and everyone
should be congratulated; the 10
schools involved; the fantastic
22 acts (including the choir)
consisting of 97 wonderfully
gifted and brave children and all
those behind the scenes.
Mr. Dickinson, CEO of Waterton Academy Trust
tweeted, “What a venue, the children are on
fire. Amazing talent on show from pupils across
all of our schools. A night to remember for a
packed audience”.
Even having a pie shoved in his face onstage
during the show didn’t put Mr Dickinson off.
We’ve got the power in us!
This publication was
produced by:
Cherry Tree Academy
and Ackworth Mill Dam
What some of the children said…
“That was one of the best experiences of
my whole entire life” Dexter S.
“I was shaking all over with nerves, yet
when I started to sing my nerves vanished
and seeing my family in the crowd made
me as happy as can be” George C.
“I actually felt like a celebrity!” Ellie-Lea
Waterton’s Got Talent was incredibly unique with
acts performing a variety of
extraordinary inventiveness.
At Mill Dam Primary we were
so proud to hear the laughter
amongst the audience when
Tilly did her ventriloquist act
with Bluey; astounded by the
beautiful voices of George
and Alex; and bounced to the
infectious beats of DJ Dexter.
Cherry Tree Academy
amazed us with Evie’s
emotional dancing in her
beautiful red chiffon outfit
and Ellie-Lea bewitched the
crowd with her incredible
voice. The rest of the show
was packed with of laughter
from the comedy acts;
incomparable musical
poetry; dexterous musicians;
naturally talented dancers -
from street to gymnastics;
fabulous hula-hoop displays
and the icing on the cake was
the breathtaking choir who
opened, supported and
closed the show exquisitely!
Thank you, Waterton Academy Trust, for providing an opportunity
for the children to grow their talents, the staff to be part of an
empowering event and the families to be included in such a
wonderful celebration of capability and bravery.
CREATIVE CORNER
Celebrate World Book Day by making some of these
fabulous mini books using just one piece of A4 paper!
TOP TIP! Why not write your own story for a younger child in your school or a
brother or sister and make it into a mini book for them to read? You could even
cut the paper into a shape at the top like the house book in the photograph!
Dear Alex
I’m feeling worried because the Year 6 SAT tests will be happening soon. I’m worried that I will be too nervous and that I won’t do very well. Help!
From Bookworm77
Hi Bookworm77
It’s normal to feel like this before a test – even adults feel anxious at times like this! I know that you will have been really well prepared by your teacher in test techniques, such as underlining key words and reading carefully how many boxes to tick. Remember, you are not alone - every Year 6 child in the country knows how you feel! Make sure you get lots of sleep and relax each night before the tests. The most important thing is to do your best. The tests are just a chance for you to show how hard you’ve worked all year. You’ll be fine – believe in yourself!

Real life Superheroes! Key Stage 1 children at Cherry Tree Academy launched
their new topic with an invasion of superheroes. Children
and staff dressed as a real-life or imaginary hero and
enjoyed taking part in a range of fun-filled learning
activities.
We were very inspired by Jono Lancaster
who led an assembly and class sessions for
us. He has Treacher Collins syndrome, a
genetic disorder that affected the way his
facial bones developed before he was born.
Jono wants people to be more aware of
what Treacher Collins is and how to deal
with it. He visits schools and teaches
children that there is much more to a
person than what they look like. He had a
difficult time growing up and wants to help
others change the way they think. What a
true hero!
Who inspires
YOU to be the
best person you
can be?
Which artist did your school focus on for the exhibition?
All the schools in the MAT decided to hold an exhibition of artwork
in each school. It was an incredible challenge and the teachers
never thought that it would finally happen…but it did!
Each school was given a British artist to learn about. Our school
was given Barbara Hepworth. Did you know that The Hepworth Art
Gallery in Wakefield is named after her?
Every class in every school had to send a piece of artwork
inspired by their artist into the exhibition to be shown to all the
children and their parents. Afterwards, the teachers had to load
their cars up and drive everybody’s work round to other schools
so they could show it to all their children too.
The
Great
MAT
Off!
All the children in school went to look at the artwork displayed in
the hall. It looked amazing displayed together!
It was fantastic to see what creative artists we have in our schools!
Cherry Tree
Academy
loves…
Introducing…. Miss Habbishaw Headteacher at Cherry Tree Academy
Miss Habbishaw is our new headteacher. She started at Cherry Tree Academy in September so has not been our headteacher very long.
One of the new rewards Miss Habbishaw has introduced is Hot Chocolate Champions. Every Friday in Golden Assembly, the teachers name one child in their class who they feel deserve to go to Miss Habbishaw at the end of the day and have a drink of hot chocolate and a biscuit.
Miss Habbishaw said, “This is my favourite part of the week! I love to be able to reward those children who have been making good choices all the time and spend time talking to them about how we can help to make our school even better.”
Introducing …. Mrs Thompson Headteacher at Mill Dam Primary School
We are very happy to introduce our newly appointed head teacher – Mrs
Thompson. She joined our team full time on Monday 26th February 2018,
and we already feel the benefit of her presence and positive attitude.
The school council arranged an interview with her to get to know her
better; each councillor picked their own question to ask.
Here is what we learnt:
To make learning more fun Mrs Thompson will be introducing new
guided reading ideas and problem solving activities in Maths (George L.)
Mrs Thompson enjoys being a head teacher because of that moment
when a child fully understands what they are learning and the penny drops
– a very special moment (Jessica P.)
Mrs Thompson enjoys teaching year 6 because the children are mature
enough to have an individual sense of humour and old enough to know not
to cheeky back (Macey F.)
To make the school attractive to
children Mrs Thompson will be
concentrating on maths and literacy
results and continue with exciting
opportunity activities eg. Waterton’s
Got Talent which influences her love
for learning (CL).

With the original world book day being cancelled on the 1st March 2018
due to snow causing school closure, Mill Dam Primary School postponed
the fun, rescheduling for the 12th March 2018.
We’re not sure who had the most fun – the children or the teachers!!!
Lots of children
dressed up as their
favourite book
characters and we
loved how the
teachers looked
too! What a great
day we had!
World Book Day at Cherry Tree Academy
had to be rescheduled because of the snow.
Headteacher Miss Habbishaw set the bar
high as she flew into school via umbrella,
just like Mary Poppins!
Every teacher and child came dressed as a
book character or in pyjamas ready for
bedtime stories.
Throughout the day the children took part
in many book-related activities and
competitions – a photo competition of the
most unusual place to be caught reading
proved to be very popular.
Other children chose to create a book-in-a-
box – a scene from a book.
We take our responsibilities as School Council
members at Cherry Tree very seriously indeed and we
try to think of new ideas to raise money for school.
One of the good ideas we had was to have a bookstall
at the Story Café on World Book Day. We made
posters and put them round school asking for books
that children might not want any more. They had to
be in good condition so that people would want to buy
them!
We raised
£70.45
altogether! Children enjoyed reading
stories and having a drink and
a bun with their families in
the school hall.
Hello from Mill Dam school council. We are split into 3
houses to represent the ecological heritage of
England - Oak, Elm and Ash.
Oak Vice Captain - Macey A "I am impressed how the parliament is
made up of representatives of all the schools in the academy
because it makes me feel part of a bigger team".
Elm Captain - Jessica P "I like being part of the parliament because
it gives us a voice"
Elm Vice Captain Finlay P "I became part of the school council
because I don't think it's fair that the teachers do all the talking"
Ash Captain George L. "I like how we can choose what playground
equipment we can get"
Vice Captain Cain L "I am pleased to be representing Mill Dam School
and be part of changing our future"
Oak Captain
Macey F, "I like
how it's not
just the
teacher’s
choice, but the
children's too"
NO BUSINESS-LIKE SNOW BUSINESS
News from Ackworth Mill Dam
As snowfall has caused chaos and disruption throughout the United
Kingdom in the last couple of weeks, some of us took the opportunity to
enjoy the school closures with some good old fashioned physical
exercise on the snow-covered hills. Sledge suppliers and public houses
enjoyed increased sales.
Firstly, with the tail end of Storm Emma introducing the Beast from
the East bringing much of Britain to a temporary standstill on 28
March 2018 and forcing hundreds of schools to close due to further
snowfall overnight. The RAF were assigned to help with relief efforts
as roads, trains and flights halted. Ten people lost their lives due to
weather related incidents; £10 million worth of damage to cars with an
estimated 8,000 collisions in 3 days; reminding us of the serious
dangers in relation to mother nature’s winter wonderland.
The Pest from the West came on 8th March 2018. Luckily the snow did
not settle locally, and Mill Dam school’s day progressed as normal.
Let it snow! At Cherry Tree Academy, we held a “Be caught reading in an unusual place” competition. Mitchell took advantage of the snow day and was captured reading with his snowman and snow dog!
At Cherry Tree Academy we love our after school clubs. Here is a
list of just some of the great activities we do:

Archery
Musical Theatre
Gymnastics
Football

We have enjoyed learning about artist Barbara Hepworth. We looked at pictures of her sculptures and wrote down all the different words, phrases, thoughts and feelings that they made us think about when we looked at them. Next, we used these ideas to create poems. We displayed them with our artwork.
