Itzhak Perlman recorded this orchestral recital in 1995 to mark his fiftieth birthday. Its “à la carte” menu features a veritable feast of hisfavourite “dishes” — the album title being a thinly veiled allusion to the violinist’s reputation as a gourmand. A delicious appetiser(Massenet’s Méditation) and a tasty dessert of delicacies from Sarasate and Kreisler dazzle at either end of this recital, which also featuresappealing, virtuosic delights by Kreisler (his arrangement of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Fantasy on Russian Themes), Glazunov (Meditation),Tchaikovsky (Scherzo in C minor) and Wieniawski (Légende). Sharing the celebrations is conductor Lawrence Foster — a natural choice,given that he had also worked with Perlman on his very first EMI recording (see volume 1). The violinist’s huge discography is brimful of miniatures such as these, a genre he has raised to new heights. This album brought seven

new pieces to the party — Perlman had already recorded Sarasate’s Zigeunerweisen, Rachmaninov’s Vocalise and Kreisler’s The OldRefrain and Schön Rosmarin (albeit, in three out of the four cases, in different arrangements). Accompanied by a studio band put togetherspecially for the occasion and made up of players from London’s leading orchestras, Perlman sets out, with characteristic conviviality,humour and sensitivity, on a charm offensive of the sincerest kind. And if one aspect of his playing sets it apart from that of hiscontemporaries, it is the seductive power that emanates from his violin as soon as his bow hits the strings, like Heifetz’s energy andSarasate’s elegance before him. Perlman’s purity of sound (Massenet), beautifully shaped lines (Wieniawski), technical perfection (Sarasate)and originality of inspiration (Rimsky-Korsakov, Kreisler) are all absolutely irresistible treats to suit any occasion.

C’est en 1995, à l’occasion de son cinquantième anniversaire, qu’Itzhak Perlman enregistra ce récital avec orchestre, dont lemenu composé « à la carte » réunissait — comme son nom l’indique — une sélection de ses « plats » favoris. Allusion à peine voilée augoût bien connu du violoniste pour la bonne chère, qui nous proposait ici un véritable festin, avec de délicates mises en bouche(Méditation de Massenet) et quelques mignardises finales de Sarasate ou Kreisler ainsi que de fins mets signés Kreisler (son arrangementde la Fantaisie sur des thèmes russes d’après Rimski-Korsakov), Glazounov (Méditation), Tchaïkovski (Scherzo en ut mineur) et Wieniawski(Légende). Et c’est naturellement avec Lawrence Foster, qui l’accompagnait lors de son premier enregistrement pour EMI (volume 1),qu’il choisit de célébrer cet événement. La discographie gigantesque de Perlman regorge de ces miniatures auxquelles il a su redonner leurs lettres de noblesse. Ce volume

l’enrichit encore de sept pièces qu’il n’avait encore jamais gravées, puisque seuls les Zigeunerweisen de Sarasate, la Vocalise deRachmaninov, le Vieux Refrain et Schön Rosmarin de Kreisler, figuraient auparavant — pour trois d’entre eux dans des arrangementsdifférents — sur la liste de ses enregistrements. Accompagné par un orchestre de studio, constitué pour l’occasion à partir des meilleuresformations londoniennes, Perlman se livre avec la convivialité, l’humour et la tendresse qui le caractérisent à une irrésistible entreprisede charme. S’il est en effet un trait de son jeu qui le distingue de celui de ses contemporains, c’est bien son pouvoir de séduction quijaillit de son violon dès les premières notes tout comme purent l’être autrefois l’énergie d’Heifetz ou l’élégance de Kreisler. Pureté du son(Massenet), beauté des lignes (Wieniawski), perfection instrumentale (Sarasate) et fraîcheur d’inspiration (Rimski-Korsakov, Kreisler) sontun régal de tous les instants auquel nul ne peut résister.

1995, anlässlich seines 50. Geburtstags, spielte Itzhak Perlman dieses Konzert mit Orchester ein, dessen Menü “à la carte”zusammengestellt war und, wie der Name sagt, eine Auswahl seiner beliebtesten “Gerichte” enthält. Kaum verhüllte Anspielung auf diebekannte Vorliebe des Geigers für die gute Küche, mit der er uns hier einen wahren Festschmaus vorsetzt: Ein delikates Appetithäppchen(die Méditation von Massenet) und köstliche Desserts (Sarasate und Kreisler) rahmen diesen Schmaus ein, der aus virtuosen Werken vonKreisler (seiner Fantaisie über russische Themen nach Rimski-Korsakow), Glasunow (Meditation), Tschaikowsky (Scherzo in c-moll) undWieniawski (Légende) besteht. Natürlich war es Lawrence Foster, der ihn bei seiner ersten Einspielung für EMI (Album 1) begleitet hatte,der mit ihm dieses Ereignis feiern sollte.Perlmans riesige Diskographie bietet in Hülle und Fülle Miniaturen dieser Art, denen er wieder Geltung verschafft hat. Das vorliegende

Album bereichert sie um weitere sieben Stücke, die er noch nie aufgenommen hatte: Nur Sarasates Zigeunerweisen, RachmaninoffsVocalise, Kreislers Alter Refrain und Schön Rosmarin — drei davon in unterschiedlichen Arrangements – waren auf der Liste seinerEinspielungen vertreten. Begleitet von einem Studio-Orchester, das zu dieser Gelegenheit aus den besten Formationen Londonszusammengestellt wurde, widmete sich Perlman mit dem Gemeinschaftssinn, dem Humor und der Warmherzigkeit, die ihm eigen sind,einem Unternehmen von unwiderstehlichem Reiz. Wenn es etwas gibt, was sein Spiel von dem seiner Zeitgenossen unterscheidet, so istes seine Macht der Verführung, die von den ersten Noten an aus seiner Violine emporsteigt, so wie es einst Heifetz‘ Energie oder KreislersEleganz vermochten.
