How did parades become a
Thanksgiving tradition?
The first American Thanksgiving Day parade was
held in 1920, organized by Gimbel's Department
Store in Philadelphia, not Macy's as most people
believe. The NYC Macy's Thanksgiving Day paradetradition actually began in 1924, and has grown into
an annual event of balloons, bands, and floats,
enjoyed by more than 46 million people each year
in person and on TV.

How does your family celebrate
Thanksgiving? My family used to every other year go to my moms parents house for Thanksgiving. It was like a
big family reunion, all of my moms brothers and sisters were there (she has 2 sisters and 3
brothers), plus there wives/husbands and children. My grandfather would sit us all down 30
minutes before the turkey was done and he would give a devotion and prayer, then we would go
all around and say at least 2 things we were grateful for. Then we would eat turkey, broccoli
casserole, cranberry slices, corn, gravy, mashed potatoes, green beans, bread rolls, and
strawberry pretzel salad.
When we are not at my moms grandparents house we are at our own house with my dads parents
and other families from our church who have no where to go for Thanksgiving dinner. We eatthe same exact food that I have listed above. My dad does the devotion and we will sometimes
go on walks (depends on how cold it is) and we watch the Thanksgiving Parade.
