Straits Area Community Foundation 2016 Annual Report

We connect people who care about the future of Cheboygan County and Mackinaw City with

the causes closest to their hearts. By encouraging individuals to create permanent charitable

endowments to meet the ever-changing needs of our communities, we can match

donors’ charitable interests with worthwhile causes by giving

grants and scholarships to area programs and students.

The Straits Area Community Foundation (SACF) Board of Directors is pleased to share the 2016 Annual Report with you. There is so much to celebrate including our many grants, scholarships and our Youth Advisory Council, and of course, recognition of the many donors whose vision and generosity make all of this possible. Though it hardly seems enough, we give our sincerest gratitude for their support.

In 2016, SACF gained a new charitable fund: the Raymond Plaunt Memorial Maritime Scholarship Fund. This addition brings the number of charitable funds held at the Community Foundation to 47. Our assets increased from $1.94 million to $2.13 million, and we received over $178,000 in contributions during the year.

We invite you to enjoy this annual report, and to spend a little time on our website as well, learning more about how your donations are making a difference right here in Cheboygan County and Mackinaw City.

With warmest regards and appreciation,SACF Board of Directors

A Message from the Board of Directors

The Transfer of Wealth in the Straits AreaThe United States is in the midst of the largest transfer of wealth, likely in its history. As the Baby Boomer generation ages, they will pass over $59 trillion in assets to their Generation X and Millennial children between 2007 and 2061 according to a 2014 study from Boston College. $3.55 billion is projected to change hands in Cheboygan County and Mackinaw City alone by 2050. And while these are estimates, those estimates are rather conservative.

The Straits Area Community Foundation hopes to secure at least 5% of the expected $3.55 billion, ideally for grants through SACF’s Community Needs Fund. Strategically, this fund allows us to most effectively meet the needs of our community through our Community Impact grants, to truly enhance all that the Straits Area has to offer.

To help paint the “numbers” picture, five percent of the estimated wealth in our counties would amount to $177 million by 2050. If that number were preserved locally in the form of endowed funds, it would mean the Community Foundation could award nearly $9 million in grants for our community EVERY YEAR. $9 million! Please visit our website for the full story on the Transfer of Wealth in the Straits Area and all of northeast Michigan at www.sacf.net, and how you can play a role in preserving a vibrant future for our communities.

Youth Philanthropy is Strong in the StraitsThe Straits Area Youth Advisory Council (YAC) dove deep into philanthropy in 2016 through their grantmaking, and an opportunity to learn the fundamentals of youth giving with over 100 other youth grantmakers.

Over two grant cycles in 2016, students from Mackinaw City, Cheboygan and Wolverine High Schools awarded $3,330 in grants to

support youth programs in their communities.

In October, they also joined YAC members from across northeast Michigan in a regional training

event to learn about endowment building, fund development and leadership.

A $1,000 Community Impact grant from SACF provided funding for the construction of an Anishinaabe Medicine Wheel at the Mackinaw Area Historical Society’s Historic Village.

Project organizers say the wheel has drawn both natives and non-natives to learn and experience what life was like for Native Americans from 1180-1917. It has also become a site for traditional ceremonies, celebrations and performances throughout the year.

The wheel is divided into four sections, with each color representing a different direction and a different people.

New Fund Will SupportMaritime Scholarships

Straits Area Community Foundation 2016 Annual Report

A new scholarship fund through the Straits Area Community Foundation (SACF) will provide an educational opportunity for students pursuing

an education and career in the maritime field.

The Raymond Plaunt Maritime Memorial Scholarship, reflecting a growing trend among new scholarship funds being established at the Community Foundation, is an award open not

only to graduating seniors, but also to non-traditional students and those who have served in the military.

This scholarship fund was established in February 2016 in memory of Raymond A. Plaunt. At the young age of 12, Mr. Plaunt began working on boats with his father, transporting passengers and supplies to Bois Blanc Island, several miles off Cheboygan County’s shoreline in Lake Huron. A lifelong resident of Bois Blanc Island, he spent his life working on the Great Lakes as the boat Captain and owner of his family business, Plaunt Transportation. The Raymond Plaunt Maritime Memorial Scholarship was created by friends, family and colleagues to honor his legacy and his love of northern Michigan’s lakes and its maritime industry.

This scholarship is open to students graduating from any high school, or anyone who will be studying in a field of maritime studies. Reflecting the background of the scholarship’s creation, preference will be given to anyone from northern Michigan who is currently working in the maritime field on the Great Lakes, or anyone from northern Michigan who served in the Navy, Marines or Coast Guard, and wants to return to school to pursue maritime studies.
