ON ISLAND TIME NEWS & VIEWS FROM UNDER THE DIVI TREE FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT I hope this new issue of our digital On Island Time newsletter finds you and your families safe and healthy. As we head toward Memorial Day Weekend, we salute our military and all who serve and continue to protect this nation. This year we’re also recognizing and thanking thousands of frontline workers from around the world battling COVID-19, honoring our everyday heroes, including brave doctors and nurses who have gone above and beyond the call of duty, grocery workers who have helped keep food on our tables, post office employees and delivery drivers who have kept us connected, and so many others. In this week’s employee spotlight, we’re shining the spotlight on Diego Concha, our Regional Director of Operations. He’s been hard at work communicating with our resorts’ General Managers on reopening plans. Plus, we’re transporting you to Barbados and showing you five fun activities to take advantage of while vacationing on this beautiful island. And don’t miss out on our delicious Mount Gay Rum recipe so you can enjoy a taste of the islands from home. Trivia returns this week with a twist – Vintage Divi! Over the years we’ve made many improvements to our resorts, and we recently scoured our photo archives to find a few oldie but goodies! Can you guess which resorts are featured? If you’re missing the sounds of the islands, we’ve got just what you need! Check out a Caribbean playlist straight from Bonaire courtesy of Celine Van Meer, Divi Flamingo Beach Resort & Casino’s General Manager. Don’t forget, there’s still time to have your kids and teens (18 and under) enter our Divi Vacation Memory contest. Two lucky winners and their families will get to enjoy a 7-night/8-day all-inclusive vacation to either Divi Village Golf & Beach Resort on Aruba or Divi Little Bay Beach Resort on St. Maarten. But hurry, the deadline to enter is May 31, 2020. Guess who’s back? Gizmo, of course! She’s hidden herself again and she swears this spot will stump you. Can you find her? Search for our Divi Diva and tell us where you found her at [email protected]. Enjoy this exciting issue and stay safe and healthy. Marco Galaverna President & COO As the resorts have been closed for several weeks now, can you give us a bit of insight into what’s been happening during this time? As you can imagine, these are unprecedented times and all five of our Caribbean islands had to close. During this time apart from our beloved guests, we’ve been taking care of the properties, maintaining pools, landscaping, our golf course and dive boats, and of course making sure that all of our properties are secure 24 hours a day. How are the employees at each resort doing? Our General Managers and Human Resources departments are in touch with all of our staff members and regularly check in on their wellbeing. In North Carolina, our corporate employees are all working from home for now but are looking forward to being able to return to the office when it is safe to do so. At Divi Resorts, all of our team members are like family and we always treat each other accordingly. Are plans being made for reopening? Of course! We all look forward to the day when we’re back up and running, welcoming owners, members and guests. We are waiting for each island’s government officials to determine when the time is right to reopen airports and allow visitors to return. Will there be new safety protocols in place? For half a century, Divi Resorts has focused on ensuring guests enjoy their vacation in a healthy and safe environment. In preparing to welcome guests back, we’ve formed a talented “task force” with staff members from all departments to review every area of our health and cleanliness procedures and adjust best practices resort-wide. These new protocols follow the recommendations of the Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention (CDC), the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Ministries of Health on each island. Divi’s staff is known for their warm hugs and greetings. How will that change when the resorts reopen? That is so true. Every member of staff has always been deeply engaged in meeting and greeting our guests warmly and that will never change. To continue this tradition, our staff will now meet, greet and thank all guests with a hand on their heart. We hope this safe and meaningful gesture will convey not only a warm welcome, but a sign of our appreciation for trusting us with your vacation. It’s been a busy few months for Divi’s Regional Director of Resort Operations, Diego Concha, who’s been working hard behind the scenes to prepare our resorts for reopening and welcoming back guests. With over 25 years of hospitality management experience, Concha is the ideal leader for the job, communication daily with our general managers and corporate office. He took a brief break from all of the planning to answer a few questions for us. VINTAGE DIVI How well do you know Divi Resorts? We dug through our photo archives and found some incredible throwback photos from the 1990s and even earlier. Think of these as our high school yearbook portraits – fashion was a little different back then! Can you guess the resort where each photo was taken? You’ll find the answers at the end of this newsletter. Rum-making is not just a tradition on Barbados, it’s a way of life. The island is home to the world’s oldest rum, Mount Gay Rum, which is known by locals as the rum that invented rum. You’ll find rum punch almost anywhere you go on the island and once you taste it, you’ll understand why it’s a favorite. This light and fruity drink perfectly accompanies the laid-back Barbados lifestyle and is sure to get you in the vacation state of mind. Here’s one of our favorite rum punch recipes you can easily make at home. Want to visit Barbados and learn more about the island’s British heritage? Hop online and visit www.diviresorts.com/british-barbados.htm to check out our latest vacation deals and specials. Mount Gay Rum Party Punch Ingredients: 19 oz. Mount Gay Rum 18 oz. water 13 oz. simple syrup 12 oz. grenadine 4 oz. lime juice 1 oz. Angostura bitters Maraschino cherries Instructions: Mix all of the ingredients in a large punch bowl with ice and stir. Serve each cup with a maraschino cherry on top and enjoy! EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT DIEGO CONCHA FEATURED MEMBERS JAMES & BRENDA DUBILZIG Meet this week’s featured President’s Elite Members, James and Brenda Dubilzig from Perrysburg, Ohio. We interviewed this happy couple to discover why the Divi Vacation Club fits their needs so well. The Dubilzigs became members of the Divi Vacation Club back in February 2016, converting their traditional Divi Vacation Ownership weeks to Pure Points. They travel twice a year to Divi Aruba Phoenix Beach Resort – often with their adult son, daughter and their significant others – so James and Brenda were looking for more flexibility. “The flexibility is truly a great benefit for the whole family,” James said. “We enjoy being able to choose different sized rooms depending on how many people we have traveling with us. It’s also been really convenient for us to take advantage of midweek arrivals, and we often choose to travel Wednesday to Wednesday.” The Dubilzigs have visited Divi Little Bay Beach Resort on St. Maarten, and on Aruba, they enjoy playing golf at The Links at Divi Aruba, the 9-hole golf course surrounding Divi Village Golf & Beach Resort. But they say Divi Aruba Phoenix Beach Resort is still their true home away from home. “Phoenix has everything you want without being a huge touristy spot,” explained Brenda. “The beach is out front and the pools are so refreshing. Plus, you really get to know the staff. When we’re here, we love just relaxing, reading, trading stories with the family and going out to restaurants.” The Dubilzigs say pureocean, the upscale chef- driven restaurant on the grounds, is a favorite, especially when they want to dine and watch the sunset right on the beach. “Everyone at Divi is so welcoming and accessible,” Brenda added. “It really does feel like home.” Would you like to be in our next newsletter?
