Thank you for your generosity.

This year we are celebrating 95 years as a parish

and school. I can hardly imagine what it must have

been like in 1924 and what they would have imag-

ined the parish to become. Notre Dame Seminary

was completed in 1923. This marked a significant

turning point for the church in Louisiana. No

longer would we be so dependent on foreign and

religious order priests, but we would become a ma-

ture self-sustaining church. One of my favorite sto-

ries of the seminary was the installation of gas fix-

tures even though there were electrical lights. It is

said that Archbishop Shaw believed that electricity

was a passing fade and they would return to the

tried and true gas lamp. There were still the gas

connections in the rooms when I was there. What

would Archbishop Shaw think about the archdio-

cese today and the parish of Immaculate Concep-

tion, of which he was responsible for its inception?

We are very indebted to Archbishop Shaw for the

way he envisioned the growth of the Catholic com-

munity even though he was pretty wrong about

electricity. We are also indebted to so many

priests, religious sisters and parishioners who con-

tinued to nurture the wondrous seed that was

planted in the rich soil of Marrero. Many things

have changed through these 95 years. We have ex-

perienced triumphs and disasters; joys and sorrows,

but just like electricity we’re still going strong.

This weekend the parish and school are announcing

4 individuals who have made significant contribu-

tions to our parish and school in recent history. In

the case of George Richard, some may consider it

to be ancient history. These four people will be

honored at our parish/school gala in October.

Parking on 7th Street in front of the Church:

Please be considerate when parking in front of

the Church, even if this is not considered parking

space, we still use it as such. So if you are going

to park here please don’t park on the sidewalk.

This makes it very difficult to push a wheelchair or

a walker through when the sidewalk is not clear,

so please be considerate to others. Thank you.

contribuciones significativas a nuestra parro-

Gracias.
