2018 Inductees into the 4-H Hall of

Fame

Max & Georgia Schmidt were nominated by How-ard County 4-H to be honored as inductees into the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame at the Iowa State Fair in August. Max and Georgia have been a part of Howard County 4-H for most of their adult life. They selflessly gave their time, talents, and resources so

that kids in the community could have a chance to be apart of something that taught them to grow in their love and knowledge of agriculture, in their capacity as future leaders, and in their ability to be better citizens. They still continue to enjoy the Mighty Howard County Fair by watching the livestock shows, particularly the swine show, as they support and cheer on the next generation of 4-H’ers. Fundraising Efforts! 4-H Alumni Com-mittee along with the help of other 4-H alumni have been busy fundraising with the goal of sup-porting our local 4-H program. The fair was a busy time for the Com-mittee as they co-ordinated the beef celebrity showman-ship classes and teamed together with the Howard County Cattlemen in the steak sandwich stand. A big thank you to everyone who has helped with these events!

The 4-H Alumni once again sponsored an Adult Celebrity Showmanship event at the Mighty Howard County Fair. This year at the fair former 4-H’ers and other interested community members joined together in the show ring to raise money for our local 4-H program. Participants dusted off their boots and perfected their showmanship skills for the com-petition during the annual 4-H/FFA beef show. The contest immediately followed the youth beef showmanship classes. They were judged by the same judges and criteria. The $100.00 entry fee was paid by local sponsors and proceeds will allow the Howard County 4-H Alumni Committee to directly support the Howard County 4-H Program through col-lege scholarships, farm safety programming, and membership fees. The Celebrity Beef Showmanship sponsors included A&K Feed; Christensen Pioneer Seeds; Cray Insurance; Cresco Motors; CUSB; Dalton Martinek; Dave Fritcher; Elma Lock-er; Harmony-Cresco Vet Clinic; John Wacha III; Keith Klimesh; Lyle Eastman; Mike Adams; NIA Grain Processors; Osage Vet Clinic; Peoples Savings Bank; Spring Valley Chevrolet; Steve Eastman; Therma Fitzgerald; Farmers Feed & Grain; Vic Fencl; and Gary Sovereign. Winner, Madison Fitzgerald, of the event was presented with the Russell Fitzgerald Me-morial Trophy and Sue Z Q’s gift certificate. All 22 participants in the class received malt and beef tickets to spend at the Moo Mobile and Cattlemen’s at the fair.

The 4-H Alumni truly appreciate everyone’s support in this annual event. In 2018 the Celebrity Showmanship class will be beef! Maybe we will see you in the show ring on Saturday, June 29, 2019!

The following was developed during the founding of the 4-H Alumni Group. The group strives to reach the goals of the mission each year. If you have ideas that the Alumni Committee can build from in order to reach our mission, please share with the Extension Office.

To increase Howard County 4-H Endowment to a level that the interest created can help support and grow our county 4-H program as well as pro-vide scholarships for young people.

To rekindle the 4-H spirit in 4-H Alumni to move local alums to volunteer their talents and time to the Howard County 4-H Program.

To create an alumni pool of short-term volunteers from which we can fish for long-term volunteers in years to come.

To provide opportunities for alumni to gather, fellowship, support and pro-mote the benefits of being a 4-H member in Howard County.

H O W A R D C O U N T Y 4 - H O U T L O O K According to an 8-year cross-country study by Tufts University, youth involved in 4-H are 2

times more likely to contribute time to their community than other youth. Youth in 4-H are 2.2 times more likely to report better grades and 4.9 times more likely to graduate from college. 4-H par-ticipants are also 2 times as likely to pursue fields of study in Science, Tech-nology, Engineering and Math (the fast-est growing job markets in the U.S.). With results like that how can you not support what 4-H is doing. Many in Howard County are reaping the benefits of 4-H as our Clover Kid (K-3rd) program has grown over last few years and our 4-H numbers have stayed steady despite

dropping school enrollments in our area. This is a great sign but as 4-H’ers we have been trained to make the best better.

Howard County has had a stable enroll-ment for the past several years with approximately 200 members. We have 9 4-H clubs in the county. We are fortu-nate to have 24 very capable and caring 4-H leaders guiding these nine clubs.

For the past two years we have had Clo-ver Kids, which are grades K-3, groups in Cresco & Riceville. Each year we have had over 70 children enrolled in these once a month Clover Kid meetings from November through April. The Clover Kids learn basic skills and prepare for their future enrollment in 4-H when
