Since the very beginning in 1993, the Orange County Land Trust has been devoted to the preservation of natural and agricultural lands within our communities. Today, the Land Trust continues to build on a legacy that will last lifetimes. Safeguarding our natural resources and local food supply, protecting wildlife habitats and scenic lands, enhancing tourism and outdoor recreation, and securing a future for agriculture in Orange County is the essence of the Orange County Land Trust’s mission. In 2014, we continued to utilize proven partnerships and strategic planning to permanently protect lands with an abundance of biodiversity, natural resources, recreational opportunities, and scenic beauty. With the confidence and financial support from the Orange County Executive, Legislature, and Planning Department, we most notably worked to protect recreational, riverfront access along the Delaware River in Sparrowbush. We also helped launch a promising new partnership that empowers beginner and intermediate farmers by enabling them to gain access to productive farmland in the Hudson Valley. This Annual Report will reflect on these and other achievements. We hope you take away from it great optimism for what we cherish most about Orange County. Lastly, I would like to express my sincerest appreciation to you, our supporters- Thank you. As the majority of our funding comes from individuals and local businesses, we are truly grateful for your continued support. We look forward to celebrating many more accomplishments with you in the years ahead. For the land, Jim Delaune Executive Director

For the land,

Jim Delaune Executive Director

2014 ANNUAL REPORT: A YEAR OF PROGRESS FOR PRESERVATION. The Land Trust joined the American Farmland Trust in launching the Hudson Valley Farmlink Network, a partnership that strengthens opportunities for agriculture and farmland conservation in the Hudson Valley by connecting farmers and non-farming owners of agricultural land, and helping farm families transfer their farms to the next generation. As an active partner in the Farmlink Network, OCLT helped coordinate a workshop on farm leasing for farmers and agricultural landowners at the Newburgh campus of SUNY Orange. The workshop featured panel discussions with local farmers, landowners and attorneys with leasing experience on a variety of topics, including farm leasing basics.

OCLT helped secure $931,800 in funding from New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets through the Farmland Protection Implementation Program to preserve 142 acres at Windfall Farms in the Town of Hamptonburgh. OCLT also assisted Scenic Hudson in securing funds for the preservation of Jones Farm in the Town of Cornwall. 67 acres in the Shawangunk Ridge towns of Greenville and Deerpark

in Orange County, NY adjacent to the 1,500-acre Huckleberry Ridge State Forest, were preserved as a result of a partnership between OCLT, NY-NJ Trail Conference, and the Open Space Institute. The purchase helped protect a section of the Shawangunk Ridge Trail, which currently traverses the properties. The Land Trust is overseeing the protection and stewardship of this property, in addition to 435 acres of preserved lands at Ridgeview Preserve. The Land Trust acquired 46 acres in the Town of Cornwall outside Black Rock Forest for preservation. The property features a relatively complex landscape with habitats known to support wildlife species of concern and appears especially important for maintaining connectivity between wildlife populations. 13.1 acres along the Delaware River in Sparrowbush were also preserved through a partnership between Orange County Government, the Department of Environmental Conservation and OCLT. The property includes riverfront access, which for years had been leased to the State’s Department of Environmental Conservation for public recreation. The access remained privately-owned until the County purchased the property, thanks in part to a grant from the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. OCLT helped facilitate the project by conducting the necessary due diligence required to secure this critical property.

Preserved Lands in the Town of Greenville/Deerpark, NY.

The Land Trust continues to provide members of the community with a variety of fun outdoor events, rewarding volunteer projects, and family-friendly educational programs. OCLT also hosted several educational and recreational outings at our preserves; from nature-based programming for children and nature walks to snowshoeing and challenging hikes. These events promote environmental stewardship, outdoor recreation, and an appreciation for our natural surroundings. For over 20 years, the Orange County Land Trust has successfully protected over 5,000 acres of land including 11 nature preserves, 14 working farms, and 26 properties under conservation easement. To learn about our current conservation initiatives nearing completion, volunteer opportunities, or for ways of giving, contact us at 845-469-0951 or [email protected] and be sure to visit our website at www.oclt.org.
