Software development generates an inordinate amount of data. Forexample, check-ins, work items, and test executions are recorded insoftware repositories such as CVS, Subversion, GIT, and Bugzilla.Telemetry data reflects how customers experience software, whichincludes application and feature usage and exposes reliability. Thesheer amount is impressive: for the 10,000 projects monitored by theweb-page CIA.vc, every 17 seconds a commit takes place. The open-

source platform SourceForge.net hosts more than 300,000 projects, and according toGithub.com, 1 million people host 2.9 million GIT repositories. The bug database of theMozilla Firefox projects now contains almost 800,000 reports. Many companies havedevelopment data at similar scale. But how can we use this data to make smarter decisionsand to improve software projects? Software development analytics takes data and turns itinto insight to inform better development decisions. Analytics is commonly used in manybusinesses-notably in marketing, to better reach and understand customers. The applicationof analytics to software development is becoming more popular. In this talk, I presentsuccessful efforts from Microsoft and academia that turn software development data intoactionable insight.

Cloud computing, mobile technologies, big data, social media, analytics and others are the latest major technologies that offer greatpotential for revolutionary transformation in business effectiveness ofenterprises. However, technology adoption is handicapped by highbarrier in their consumability when put in the hands of the businessusers of the enterprises. This keynote by Dr. Pourdehand fromUniversity of Pennsylvania, a long time associate of Russell Ackoff, will

address the following questions: How disciplines of system and design thinking, integrativethinking, hybrid thinking can be applied to design new enterprise systems for businesstransformation from smart integration of these technologies? How to use design thinkingapproach to create alternative set of behavior patterns for "better Enterprise Systems" toserver Enterprises' specific goals? How to use the synthetic mode of thought and abductivelogic to redesign the next generation of enterprise systems?

Social Media Data Analytics Research

Social media is an interactive vehicle for communication used daily by hundreds ofmillions of people. Businesses can derive significant benefits from listening to what users arepublicly saying on social media, by transforming the massive amounts of textual content intoinsights specific to enterprise applications. Defining, extracting and representing entitiessuch as people, organizations and products, and their inter-relationships enables thebuilding of comprehensive consumer profiles that can be leveraged in enterprise applicationssuch as customer retention and acquisition, campaign management and lead generation.Building these social media profiles requires a combination of text analytics and entityresolution, while the utilization of such profiles in applications requires statistical models andmachine learning. In this talk, I will describe the work in progress at IBM Research on howsuch consumer insights, both at the level of an individual and at the level of appropriatemicro-segments, can be used in applications in companies ranging from movie studios tofinancial services and insurance companies. I will also provide a brief overview of text, entityand statistical analysis tools that can operate in a distributed environment over very largeamounts of data.

Shivakumar Vaithyanathan is the IBM Chief Scientist for Text Analytics and the DepartmentManager of the Intelligent Information Systems Group at the IBM Almaden Research Center.Since joining IBM in 1998, he has been involved in multiple research areas includingdevelopment of learning algorithms, especially for extremely high-dimensional sparse data. His department is currently involved in building systems for Scalable Unstructured Analytics,Enterprise Search and Large-scale machine learning and Statistical Modeling. Multipletechnologies developed in his department currently ship with several IBM products includingIBM's Big Data Products.

Prior to IBM, Shivakumar was part of the newly formed Altavista Group at Digital.Shivakumar was an invited keynote speaker at the 2011 German Database Conference and2011 ACM SiGIR Industrial Track. He is also an Associate Editor of Journal of StatisticalAnalysis and Data Mining.

Chief Statistician, Distinguished Engineer - Predictive AnalyticsIBM Software Group

Tuesday November 6th, Donald Cousens Conf. Centre #2: 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM

Making Analytics Accessible to Non-Analysts

Business leaders today acknowledge the role that predictive analyticscan play in managing their organizations more effectively. Althoughprovisions are being made to add predictive analytics to complementtheir business intelligence suites, there is a growing crisis of talentshortage for qualified data miner and statisticians. In other words, thereare not enough people able to make sense of all the data beingaccumulated. Business schools are already adding predictive analyticcourses to their curriculums to address the need; however, it seems as

today's tools are targeted toward more sophisticated users. How can business analystsleverage the predictive and explanatory power of predictive analytics? How can analytics bemade more "consumable"?

IBM Business Analytic's Research Applications group has developed a robust process to dojust that. By employing a data-centric approach, driven by an interlocking series ofautomated statistical tests and modeling techniques, we have vigorously rejuvenated theanalysis process of data preparation, exploration, modeling and interpretation. By serving upinsights based on the nature of the data itself, users can truly "start from the end." Thisproposed approach will enable business analysts to use these insights to positively affecttheir businesses - not massaging data and discerning the proper analytic method.

Jing Y. Shyr is a Distinguished Engineer and Chief Statistician at the IBM Business Analyticsgroup. Before the IBM acquisition in 2009, Jing was Chief Statistician and Senior VicePresident of Technology Solutions at SPSS Inc., a worldwide provider of analyticaltechnology. She has leveraged her skills and experience in the field of statistical computingto become an innovative leader in the industry and the head of development for SPSS Inc.'sdata mining technology and analytical solutions. Today, she leads a team of researchersand software developers responsible for the creation of data mining technology andstatistical methodology. Her vision of making software produce consumable information willhelp to unlock the value of data for analysts and business users and spearheaded the use ofdata in decision making. During her tenure in SPSS, Ms Shyr set up a China developmentlab in Xi'an. The lab has become one of the most productive sites among IBM China labs.

She is an active member of the American Statistical Association, the PMML group (part ofW3C), Advisory Council of the Science School of Purdue University and a recipient of theDistinguished Alumna Award from Purdue University in 2000. She has been named to i-Street magazine's third annual Women in Black listing. Ms. Shyr has received theDistinguished Alumna Award from National Chiao Tung University in 2005 and theDistinguished Alumna Award form National Tsing Hua University in 2006.

Since joining IBM, Ms Shyr has joined the Smart City initiative to help to solve SyracuseVacant Property challenges. Her most recent efforts are on creating innovation for BusinessAnalytics in IBM.

CASCON 2012 Instructions for Camera-ready CopiesCongratulations on having your paper accepted by CASCON 2012!

Please do read the instructions carefully as they are different from the previous years. We have merged Camera-ready,which were used to produce paper proceedings, and electronic-ready versions of the paper into one.

In order for your paper to be included in the proceedings, we will need two things from you before the due date:

1. the camera-ready version of your paper for the proceedings (that includes what would be paper ready), 2. a copyright permission form signed by all authors of your paper.

Camera-ready copy and the Copyright permission form are due Wednesday, August 22, 2012.

CAMERA-READY COPY

The camera-ready copy of your paper should be in PDF, ready to print on a 600 dpi printer and must conform to thepaper format described in the Paper Formats and Templates posted on the paper submission web site before the draftswere received. The PDF file of your paper MUST NOT contain page numbers. Colour figures are permitted, but all ofthe text of the paper should be black. Although the complete proceedings will not be printed, an equivalent PDFversion of the proceedings will be placed in the ACM digital library.

Please Note: Our instructions for margins are very strict in order to allow for proper printing (if so desired) andinserting page numbers. We will not have time to be printing, measuring and sending papers back. Please follow ALLthe instructions, but pay particular attention to the margins:

Top margin (page 1): 1.5"Top margin (subsequent): 1"Left: 1.25"Right: 1.25"Bottom: 1.5"

Please ensure that the first page of your paper contains a copyright notice as shown in the sample file templates.

Restrict the fonts you select to "standard" fonts (e.g., Arial, Times, Helvetica, Courier) to avoid problems. If you usefonts other than these, you must embed the fonts in the generated PDF.

Authors must submit the following information:

1. A copy of the paper in PDF format. Please name your PDF file as ReferenceNumber_Final.pdf, whereReference_Number is a number your submission was assigned at the time of submission. 2. A plain text file giving the abstract of the paper. (Preferred encoding is UNICODE). It is anticipated this will havebeen enhanced from the original submitted abstract; 3. A short biography of each of the authors in plain text format in separate files. (Preferred encoding is UNICODE).The biography should be detailed enough to allow someone to introduce each author. Include: current responsibilities;previous positions; college(s) attended and degree(s) received; and professional association memberships. Those fileshould be named as Reference_Number_Abstract.txt and Reference_Number_AuthorName.txt and can be (optionally)zipped into one.

The camera-ready copy should be sent by email to [email protected] or you may post it on an ftp or web site andsend us the URL.

Author Information for CASCON Papers

Dr. Bilbo Baggins

Bilbo’s Affiliation

Abstract

This paper describes the required format for CASCON papers. This paper is itself in the re-quired format. Authors are requested to use this format in order to allow us to produce profession-al looking proceedings.

1 Proceedings Conference proceedings will be available to the participants at the conference in grayscale hard-copy and CD-ROM form.

The hardcopy proceedings will contain the full form of the accepted papers. To be included in the hardcopy proceedings, the final version of an accepted paper must conform to the format described in the following section and demon-strated in this sample document.

2 Paper Format

This section describes the format of the final ver-sion that will be used in the production of the hardcopy proceedings. Please follow all instruc-tions. We strongly encourage authors to use the styles provided in this sample document for for-matting paragraphs, headings, etc. in the submit-ted paper; otherwise please pay very close attention to match the format of this document.

2.1 Page Size The only acceptable page size is US Letter (8.5 by 11 inches). Copyright © 2012 Dr. Bilbo Baggins. Permission to copy is hereby granted provided the original copyright notice is reproduced in copies made.

2.2 Page Layout The page must be prepared in two equal-width columns with 3/8 inch spacing between the col-umns. Text is to be single spaced. Left and right margins must be 1.25 inches, top margin 1 inch, and bottom margin 1.5 inches. The top margin of the first page only should be 1.5 inches instead of 1 inch. Use justified alignment with hyphenation.

2.3 Fonts Use serif fonts in the main text of the paper. Times New Roman or Times is recommended. The font size should be 10 points for the main text. Sans serif fonts may be used in titles and headings. 16 point Arial or Helvetica is recommended for the main title; 12 point text is recommended for the authors’ names and affiliations. 16 point Times New Roman or Times is recommended for first level headings, 14 point for second level headings. If using LaTeX, use standard LaTeX fonts, serif 10-point for the main text.

Avoid using non-standard fonts, even in fig-ures; you must include in the generated PDF file any non-standard fonts used (including fonts used in figures).

Use black text only. The use of coloured text is not permitted in the submission for the printed proceedings.

2.4 Copyright Notice Authors should place a copyright notice as a foot-note at the bottom of the first column of the first page of the paper. 9-point text is appropriate for the copyright notice footnote. The text of the cop-yright notice should be as it appears in this sample paper, substituting the name of the copyright holder. The copyright notice must identify all

owners of the copyright, which may be individu-als, institutions, corporations, or a combination. For example, text such as the following may be appropriate in the copyright notice for a joint work:

Copyright © 2012 Dr. Bilbo Baggins and IBM Canada Ltd. Permission to copy is hereby granted provided the original copyright notice is reproduced in copies made.

Please see Appendix A at the end of this docu-ment for additional important copyright notice details.

2.5 Page Numbers You are encouraged to number the pages in the CD-ROM version; however, page numbers must be omitted in the final proceedings version.

2.6 Length of the Paper Please respect the 15 page limit including figures, tables and references.

2.7 Section Numbers Number sections as 1, 2, etc.; number subsections as 1.1, 1.2, etc., as demonstrated in this sample paper.

2.8 References, Figures, Tables It is recommended that the references be in IEEE format [1, 2] (sequenced by author surname and publication year) [3].

Figures and tables should be numbered sepa-rately, and captioned as in Figure 1.

For the printed proceedings, figures and ta-bles must not contain colour. You must convert all images and text to black and white or gray-scale.

2.9 Acknowledgements and Au-thor Biographies

Acknowledgements for help received with the paper may appear just before the authors’ biog-raphies.

A short biography of each author should be included just before the references.

3 CD-ROM Version

As well as the submission of the text of the paper, authors are encouraged to submit supporting ma-terial which can exploit the opportunities that CD-ROM allows for communicating ideas. By this we mean auxiliary material limited only by the au-thor’s imagination and willingness to prepare it, subject to fairness in sharing the available space. A signed release form is required for all auxiliary material confirming that you have the rights to publish this material.

The multi-platform CD-ROM proceedings is compliant with the ISO 9660 standard and reada-ble on Windows, Macintosh, UNIX, and other platforms. It will contain all accepted papers in PDF, and editable source format (XML, HTML, MS Word, etc.) if provided. In addition, authors can augment their papers in ways not practical with printed media: for example, by using colour images, animations, video clips, hypertext, exe-cutable demos, and source code.

Authors must submit the following infor-mation for the CD-ROM:

1. A file of (ASCII) text giving the abstract of the paper. It is anticipated this will have been updated from the original submitted abstract.

2. A copy of the paper in a PDF file format that can be sent to a printer (include page numbers).

3. A short biography of each author in (ASCII) text format in separate files.

All of the above listed material will be pub-lished on the CD-ROM.

Restrict the fonts you select to Times New Roman, Times, Arial, Helvetica, and Courier. If you use fonts other than these you must include the fonts in the generated PDF.

Appendix A: More Copy-right Notice Information For a paper written by an employee of IBM Can-ada, please include the following copyright state-ment in the paper:

Copyright © IBM Canada Ltd., 2012. Permission to copy is hereby granted provided the original copyright notice is reproduced in copies made.

Note: if the contributor is an IBM employee in the USA, then the copyright statement is:

Copyright © 2012 IBM Corp. Permis-sion to copy is hereby granted provided the original copyright notice is repro-duced in copies made.

If a paper is written by a person not categorized in the above statement (e.g. Dr. Bilbo Baggins of the University of Tambackitu), then there is a need to determine who is the real copyright owner (in this example, the real owner is Dr. Baggins and not the University of Tambackitu – Dr. Baggins will have to identify this status), and then insert the following copyright statement in the paper:

Copyright © 2012 Dr. Bilbo Baggins. Permission to copy is hereby granted provided the original copyright notice is reproduced in copies made.

A mix and match of copyright owners is allowed. For example:
