Making a positive and lasting difference

Former BCIT Foundation Board Chair Wendy Slavin believes in the value of a BCIT education.

In 2006, Wendy and her husband established the Wendy and Carl Slavin Endowment, which supports awards and bursaries for students in Nursing and Specialty Nursing every year.

Wendy and Carl hope that this gift will help to alleviate the increasing shortage of skilled professionals in the nursing field.

“BCIT has proven itself a leader in providing job-ready skills and accreditation to help meet the high demand for skilled people across a variety of industries within our province,” says Wendy.

A gift in time

For BCIT Medical Laboratory student Sarah Taylor, a financial gift could not have come at a better time during her education.

A Kinesiology graduate from the University of Victoria and a full-time student at BCIT, Sarah received the 2005 BCIT Alumni Association Entrance Award.

“As I’m sure you are well aware, financing post-secondary education is harder than ever,” says Sarah. “Having five years under my belt before even attending BCIT makes my situation that much more difficult. But with this generous award, I can concentrate on my studies instead of my financial situation. The support I’ve received certainly gives me more than enough reason to support the Association when I’m an alumna after 2007.”

Leadership support for trades training

For many BCIT students, the opportunity to access trades training would not have been possible without the generous support and foresight of Concert Properties Ltd.

“Concert values its community involvement, which includes ensuring that young people can pursue their chosen career,” says David Podmore, president and CEO, Concert Properties Ltd.

At BCIT, Concert helps to provide a path to trades training in three ways.

One is through the Concert Properties Endowment, which since 1995, has supported bursaries totalling more than $93,000 for 110 deserving students enrolled in BCIT’s Trades-related programs.

The second is through the Concert Properties and Industry Partners Trades Discovery Program, which was established in 2002 to increase the number of skilled construction workers entering the industry. This initiative provides financial support to students who want to explore their trade career choices through BCIT’s Trades Discovery General (open to men and women) and Trades Discovery Women programs.

Following the success of Concert’s partnerships with BCIT, the company recently established its third initiative at the Institute, the Concert Properties Founders Endowment in Honour of Bill Clark, former Telecommunications Workers Union (TWU) president. The endowment will provide bursaries to students in BCIT’s Telecommunications Technician and Wireless Communications and Computer Networks Technology programs.

Mr. Clark’s vision and leadership were instrumental in creating a solid foundation for Concert as a long-term real estate investment vehicle for union and management pension funds.

The support of Concert Properties and its industry partners is making a direct difference to students exploring trades career paths at BCIT.

Industry input launches new Graphic Communications Technology program

In the fall of 2006, BCIT’s new Graphic Communications Technology diploma program will meet the demand of the commercial printing industry for production expertise and hands-on training.

“Support from industry founding partners for this initiative is phenomenal,” says Laura Davie, associate dean of BCIT’s School of Business.

Industry has committed more than $1.5 million in cash and in-kind investments to support the program, developed in cooperation with the British Columbia Printing and Imaging Association (BCPIA). The Association was attracted to BCIT because of its broad range of programming and profile in the community, says Marilynn Knoch, executive director of BCPIA.

The first students in BCIT’s Graphic Communications program will receive help with their tuition, with grants of $1,200 for each of the 24 students in the inaugural class in September 2006, courtesy of the printing industry.

“It’s an amazing industry,” Laura adds. “They see the value of education in order to grow their industry. They understand that there are not only jobs in this industry, but careers.”

The two-year BCIT program is the only one of its kind west of Ontario. A 16,000-square-foot building near BCIT’s Burnaby campus will house the program’s warehouse, classrooms, offices and industry-standard equipment.

endowment helps marketing students succeed

In 2005, Glenna Urbshadt chose to celebrate her 20th year of work at BCIT by creating the Glenna Urbshadt Endowment through a gift of stock. The endowment will provide an annual graduating achievement award for a student in the Professional Sales and Entrepreneurship options in Marketing Management.

“Education is a very expensive endeavour and many students at BCIT are struggling to make ends meet,” says the instructor of BCIT’s Professional Sales and Entrepreneurship options. “The endowment is a token of support to encourage them in their education. Also, hopefully, they too will remember and give back to a future generation.”

Glenna’s admiration and respect for BCIT students, “their kindness, their focus and their accomplishments,” also motivated her to contribute towards their educational goals. “It is very rewarding to see their successes and know that you’ve helped in some small way,” she says.

BCIT to soar with new Aerospace Technology Campus

BCIT’s $65 million Aerospace Technology Campus (ATC), under construction on 12.2 acres at the gateway to Vancouver International Airport (YVR), promises to build on the foundation of BCIT’s recognized leadership in aerospace training.

The ATC, already the largest aerospace training campus in Canada, will offer a full range of certificate, diploma and degree programs in aircraft maintenance engineering, airport management, and flight operations.

“We have been inspired by the support we have received from the aerospace industry both here in Canada and abroad, which has resulted in several millions of dollars in contributions,” says Dr. Tony Knowles, president of BCIT. “This project is about innovation and achieving new standards of excellence. Above all, it is about an investment in the people in our community.”

In 2003, the Government of British Columbia recognized BCIT’s importance to the province’s burgeoning aerospace industry when it announced its new BC Aerospace Strategy, subsequently committing $16.4 million in funding for the ATC. A further $7.2 million comes from other partners who are making critical investments in the new campus including the Government of Canada, through Western Economic Diversification Canada, Phoenix-based Honeywell Aerospace, Raytheon Canada, WestJet, Bombardier, BMO Financial Group, CIBC, the RBC Foundation, YVR, HSBC, Highbury Foundation, London Air Services and Scotiabank.

With the funding from Western Economic Diversification Canada for tower simulation technology, BCIT will be the first post-secondary institution in Canada to have this technology, joining an elite handful of schools in North America.

Gifts are catalyst for research

We are grateful and proud of the donations that have promoted excellence in BCIT’s applied research and development activities. Donors are having a significant impact at BCIT in leveraging research grants for some important research.

The Dr. Tong Louie Living Laboratory was named after its major benefactor, and is dedicated to developing technologies that provide for more independent and safer lives for older adults, persons with disabilities and health care workers.

The Living Lab has received $2.5 million in research funds, largely due to founding gifts from the Tong Louie Foundation, the Rix Family and the Fisher Foundation.

“Without the founding philanthropic gifts from our benefactors, the Living Lab would not have been launched to become the applied research facility it is today,” said Dr. James Watzke, Dean of Applied Research. “Tong Louie’s vision of using technology’s potential to improve quality of life is being well served by the laboratory he endowed.”

A bequest of a lifetime

In 2006, BCIT was honoured to receive the largest bequest commitment ever dedicated to the Institute to establish the Ian and Alison Hogg Endowment.

Businessman Ian Hogg was so impressed by the skill set of the BCIT grads he has hired over the years that he wanted to make a lasting contribution towards student support. The endowment will provide achievement-based awards for students in BCIT’s Computing and Academic Studies programs.

The Hoggs hope to raise BCIT’s national profile as an outstanding leader in applied education and share the vision that BCIT will be a “programming powerhouse” to support the province’s information technology needs well into the future.

Quick Facts• BCIT has 15,500 full-time and 32,200 part-time students, 2,100 faculty and staff, 400 programs and an annual budget of $225 million.

• Annual tuition and fees at BCIT range from $3,000 for trades and technology programs to $27,500 for high tech professional programs. Books, supplies, equipment and field trips range from $600 – $4,600 per year.

• BCIT distributed more than $1.6 million in financial aid and awards in 2005/2006 to 1,710 students.
