RITAPhil! Phil! Over here. No one told me it was so much fun, all the beachballs, andfunny hats, dancing to stay warm, I’m—
PHILLarry, let’s start with a tight closeup.
LARRYHow tight?
PHILI don’t want to see any of this.
RITAHow was the B and B? You’re in their best room.
PHILWho are you again?
RITASorry. I’m Rita. We actually worked together on the flood story.
PHILOh, great. They didn’t even send me a real producer.
RITAI’m a real producer. Well, Associate Producer.
PHILSee?
RITAEither way if there’s anything you need that you don’t—
(NANCY walks past Phil.)
PHILNow that’s what I’m talking about. Hi!
RITAHey, Stud.
PHILWhat?
RITAAnything that you need, just ask.
PHILReally? Anything?
G R O U N D H O G D A Y — 1 7 —
PHIL CONNORS SIDE 1
START
RITAWork related, Phil.
(Clock-tower chimes)
(Airhorn.)
LARRYHere we go.
RITAOkay. It’s groundhog time.
PHILFine. Larry. On me in three.
LARRYOkay. We’re on in five.
PHILWhat? Hey, Rhonda...?
RITA“Rita.”
LARRYFour.
PHILTwo.
LARRYThree.
PHILHe always does this.
LARRYTwo.
PHILOnce a year, the eyes of the nation turn to this tiny hamlet in western Pennsylvaniato watch a master at work. The master? Punxsutawney Phil, the world’s mostfamous weatherman, a groundhog who, as legend has it, can predict the coming ofan early spring. So, what’s it going to be this year? Will he see his shadow? Won’t hesee his shadow? Will it be snowplows or sunscreen? The real question we have toask ourselves today is, “Does Phil feel lucky?”
— 1 8 — G R O U N D H O G D A Y
STOP
BARTENDER BILLYSee you, Buster.
(BUSTER exits.)
(PHIL enters, freezing, covered with snow)
RITAPhil! We were getting ready to send out a search party. My god, what were youdoing out there? You’re freezing. Come and sit down.
PHILThe roads are closed.
RITAI know but thanks for checking.
PHILAll of them. The one-nineteen. The three-ten. The Colonel Drake Highway.
(SHE rubs his shoulders and back.)
RITAYou need to warm up.
PHILOh, yeah. That’s good. Thanks, Rhoda.
RITARita.
PHILRita, Rhonda, Rhoda. Your room’s upstairs, right?
RITAI already rebooked you at the bed and breakfast.
PHILYou know, calling it a bed a breakfast doesn’t mean it’s not sleeping at some oldlady’s house. Could we go back to the rubbing thing? That was good for me.
RITAHow ‘bout we keep things professional.
PHILI could pay you. Kidding. But seriously, we’re not working now. It’s a snow day!
RITAOh, you’re looking for a little winter fling?
G R O U N D H O G D A Y — 2 5 —
PHILWhat do you think?
RITAYeah. I think Larry’s available.
PHILLook, kid, you’ll never have—
RITA“Kid”?
PHILIt’s an expression.
RITAI’m thirty-six.
PHILJust saying you’ll never have an opportunity even half as good—
RITACan’t you ever just have a, a normal— ?
PHILRight. Got it. Never mind.
RITAOh, sit down, Phil. We can have a drink together.
PHILThat’s clearly pointless. You know, you’re doing a terrible job of keeping the talenthappy.
(PHIL encounters STORM CHASER and LADY STORM CHASER.)
LADY STORM CHASERGreetings, greetings!
STORM CHASERHappy Groundhog -
PHILShut up. Hey—have the van outside my room at 7 A.M.
RITAYou’re going to miss the groundhog dinner.
PHILForget it. I had groundhog for lunch.
