Get to Know Current StateAs you listen this month, we hope you’ll tune in for for these regular features that make connections to your community.

Neighbors in ActionMost Wednesdays

Neighbors in Action features people and organizations working to make your community a better place. Current State listeners have heard about Help Other People Eat (HOPE), distributors of excess venison donated by hunters to those in need; the Art for Charlie Foundation, which raises money to support hospice care for children; and One Love Global, which focuses on social entrepreneurship and education reform. Do you know of a person or organization you’d like to hear featured? Please send an email to [email protected], and tell us why you think they should be featured.

Michigan Jazz TrailsSecond Friday of each month

Michigan Jazz Trail from the Great Lakes Bay area brings Michigan-based jazz musicians into the Current State studio to play live for you on the second Friday of each month. We kicked off the series in January with Bob Lindahl, John Nichol and Jeff Kressler, jazz professors from Central Michigan University. If you missed it, find Current State #230 to hear it online at wkar.org. Listen to Current State on Friday, Feb. 14, for the next performance.

Great Lakes Month in ReviewAlgae blooms, lake levels, Asian carp, fracking, ballast, petcock - they impact our economy and quality of life here in Michigan. Each month, Current State checks in with Great Lakes commentator Gary Wilson for updates on environmental stories from around the basin.

American PromiseMon., Feb. 3, 10 pm

Joe Brewster and Michele Stephenson, middle-class African-American parents in Brooklyn, N.Y., turn their cameras on their son, Idris, and his best friend, Seun, who make their way through one of the most prestigious private schools in the country. It's a 13-year chronicle of the boys' divergent paths from kindergarten through high school graduation at Manhattan's Dalton School.

American Masters: Alice Walker, Beauty in TruthFri., Feb. 7, 10 pm

Most famous for her seminal novel, The Color Purple, writer/activist Alice Walker celebrates her 70th birthday. The first African-American woman to win a Pulitzer Prize for Literature, Walker continues to shine a light on global human rights issues. Her dramatic life is told with poetry and lyricism, and includes interviews with Steven Spielberg, Danny Glover, Quincy Jones, Howard Zinn, Gloria Steinem, Sapphire and Walker herself.

Meet Mary PleasantTue., Feb. 11, 10 pm

Meet Mary Pleasant, the 19th-century African-American woman born a slave who became an international abolitionist, a prosperous entrepreneur and a civil-rights activist who helped alter modern-day civil rights law. Now called the Mother of Civil Rights in California, Pleasant was that and much more than an activist. Winner of Best of Festival (Peace Medallion) Award for Best Documentary – Berkeley Video & Film Festival and Best Historical Documentary – New York International Independent Film and Video Festival in L.A.

Underground Railroad: The William Still StoryMon., Feb. 17, 9 pm

This program tells the story of William Still, one of the most important yet unheralded individuals of the Underground Railroad. The film details the accounts of black abolitionists, who had everything at stake as they helped fugitives follow the North Star to Canada.

MSU's Project 60/50 is a yearlong community conversation on civil and human rights. The "60" represents 60 years since the Brown v. Board of Education ruling and the "50" represents 50 years since the enactment of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, making major forms of discrimination unlawful.

To commemorate these important landmark events, support MSU's Project 60/50 and celebrate Black History Month, WKAR has several special program

offerings this month.
