KEITHMcMAHON

Good evening everyone and welcome to Bayliss Avenue for tonight’s Ryman League Division One fixture against Ware.

Firstly, may I take this opportunity to welcome Kem Kemal and his Ware side here this evening - we hope that the M25 behaved itself on your journey here and that you’ll enjoy your time with us this evening. We put in a good show on Saturday after our cup exit with everything that’s gone on in the last week or so, but let ourselves down with three poor goals - all mistakes - that cost us the game against a good side.

The frustrating part is that, in this league, we may well have gotten away with them against some of the sides that we’re up against, but Needham are a good side and just like last year we got punished.

I still thought we did enough though, but decisions do change games and Saturday proved that. With a minute to go we had an

absolute stonwall penalty, and the referee - I don’t know why - has bottled it; even their full back has come in and admitted that it was blatant!

It doesn’t make you feel any better as they’ve gone straight up the other end and scored the winner, though. So I’m gutted for the lads who put a great show in.

We had to patch things up as best we could unfortunately, and we then lost Ashley Probets just before half-time which was a huge problem for us.

Thankfully, Sean Roberts went in there and did a brilliant job, but then because he’s such a good player in the middle of the park for us we had to shuffle things around a bit, so I feel for the lads really.

I had asked them for a response from them after what happened in the

FA Cup with such a disappointing performance at South Park just the week before, and I got one. The turning point was, without doubt, Rashid Kamara having to go off. We were going to make a change anyway as the forwards had yet again had worked their socks off, but Rashid had certainly been an outlet and Needham were clearly frightened of his running.

Rashid was getting the ball in the right areas and doing things with it which is something we’ve missed - I said that there are two players in this side that I would pay to watch and he’s one of them! He’s exciting on the ball and does things with it that others can just dream about and provides some real excitement to our play. Tonight we welcome Michael Spencer back after he had to miss the weekend’s game in order to attend

his brother’s wedding, and that will help us massively.

It’s been a really difficult week for us away from the pitch, but we’ve all stuck together and produced a great performance which I could be proud of.

I didn’t really expect anything different if truth be told, as that performance at South Park wasn’t us - it wasn’t a Thamesmead Town performance.

When our backs are against it, these lads respond.

They get a lot of praise our lads and that’s why I did feel for them so much. The club needed a response on Saturday and the players themselves did as well, and not one of them could have come off the

pitch at the weekend with their heads down.

Sure, there were a couple of shaky moments for the three goals, but as a team, full credit to them as we were back on track and that takes a lot after our bad bad day at the office. If only that penalty had gone our way to give us the result to lift us that bit further - but that’s football and that’s why we must go again tonight.

We must respect Ware, but we must also put in another performance like we did Saturday and, if we do, I have confidence we can produce a positive result.

Enjoy the game,Keith

TERRYHILL

Good evening everyone - firstly, can I welcome the Ware players, officials and supporters to Sporting Club Thamesmead. We hope you enjoy your time with us and wish you a safe journey home.

I was very pleased Keith and proud of the boys for their attitude and commitment at the weekend, after the disappointment of a poor performance in the FA Cup the week before.

It was a very good Needham Market side, but we started well and scored a well-taken goal from Tyrus Gordon-Young after good work from Rashid Kamara. Some sloppy defending allowed Needham to equalise, but it would have been a good game to watch for a neutral supporter with some attractive football on show.

Rashid was causing all sorts of problems for Needham and it was no surprise when he scored our second goal to give us the lead once more.

However, we continued to pay the price with a bit of naive defending when Needham had a corner with two players on the ball. We didn’t get out quick enough to close them down, allowing them to float one into the box and eventuallly finding its way into the top corner for 2-2.

There were twists and turns still to come, with Needham hitting the bar, whilst we ought to have had a penalty when Tyrus’ legs were taken from beneath him.

I thought the refere had a really good first half, but he wasn’t up with play and decided it was a fair challenge - but even their supporters behind the goal had said it was a penalty.

Yet, from that, they broke up to the other end and scored the winner with the game in injury time.

Overall, I thought we deserved something from the game. The performance was fantastic and very encouraging, so let’s hope we can rectify the end result this evening.

Enjoy the game,Terry

PAULBOWDEN-BROWN

May I welcome the directors, officials and players of Ware to our home, Sporting Club Thamesmead, for tonight’s game, and I hope after your short stay and some refreshments you all have a safe journey home.

I am writing these notes after deciding that I should, at last, take my surgeon’s advice this time! After my spinal operation last Thursday, I will put my feet up this evening and won’t be joining you.

I disregarded their advice on Saturday, though, as I wanted to be at the game for a number of reasons - the main was to show that, although the club is going through a difficult time, we will still continue to work together as one, particularly the players.

I apologise now if anyone found me quieter than usual, but I was honestly suffering and what I watched on the pitch made me a very proud and very determined man. I have the privilege of being a Director of this fine club and Saturday’s display made me more determined to ensure we find a solution to our short term problems.

We may have come away losing 3-2, but we have a great group of players and management. We will find a solution to support the great work that Keith, his management team and the players on the pitch are doing. If I don’t look after myself then I will be of no use to

this club, so whilst I apologise for my absence, be assured I will be watching the live scores coming through and I’ll be here in spirit!

Unfortunately, our current main sponsor has suffered some serious cashflow problems recently which, in turn, has seriously affected the finances of this club. Due to this, Keith and I have had to take some unfortunate measures that has initially affected the players. I thank them once again for their continued support - it is very gratifying when speaking to them that, despite being personally affected, they were both positive and upbeat. That allows me the time to ensure the shortfall is found sooner rather than later, and definitely within the timescales that we discussed.

Away from the club, although I will be resting, I will continue to hold meetings with interested parties. I will also ensure that a number of personnel who are helping as volunteers will continue to visit the commercial businesses surrounding the ground - something that needed to be done for a while now.

We also had a visit from our local MP, Teresa Pearce, on Saturday, and she

was very positive about getting local business leaders involved with the club or, at the very least, to get me to their door to explain what we’re trying to do in the local community with the fine facilities that are available here.

Finally, although I believe I have tried most things to increase our gates on matchdays, there is also an insert in tonight’s programme where we would like you to put your ideas forward of how we can achieve that aim.

The purpose of this is because the players were coming out with great ideas when we were talking, but most of them had either been tried before or were currently in place. I think communication needs to improve from top to bottom in the club, and I can’t do my job without your continued support so please give us all of your thoughts.

Please have a great night of football and, hopefully, we will earn another three points. With the quality of opposition in the league there are no easy games, but get behind the team for a positive result.

LATEST NEWS

Page 10: Thamesmead Town v Ware

WAREKem Kemal brings his Ware side to the SCT this evening looking to shake off the tag of ‘draw specialists’.

Indeed, the Blues have hit stalemate in five of their opening eight games heading into tonight’s encounter, and have still only tasted victory just the once so far.

However, after a season of struggle last term that saw the Blues finish not too far above the relegation spots, Kemal will at least be pleased to see that his side appear to have developed a resilience of some sort, and are now tougher to beat.

Their only victory to date was a very satisfying 4-1 win over Cray Wanderers who, like the Mead, were relegated from the Ryman Premier last season. However, coupled with a disappointing 3-0 defeat at home to Felixstowe in the FA Cup, Ware’s winless run now stretches to six games and it is one that they will be hoping to end sooner, rather than later.

Albert Adu has missed a few of the Blues games in recent weeks having been dismissed for violent conduct in the aforementioned victory over Cray, and Kemal admitted that losing his striker would be a blow for the side.

“Albert has been kicked and he has kicked back. I am not defending him, but people do retaliate, it is human nature,” he reflected.

“Albert is a fantastic player and it is a big thing losing him, but it won’t overshadow the football we’ve played - we’ve shown how good we are.”

With the Mead recovering from an FA Cup disappointment to put in a stellar performance against high-flying Needham Market at the weekend, both sides will be keen to take away all three points this evening to start a new run of form.

CLUB HISTORYThe Club was founded in 1892 and although first called Ware Town soon changed its name to plain Ware FC.

This unassuming title makes it probably the shortest named affiliate of the Football Association and has caused problems for programme editors and journalists ever since. In fact, the Club has been anything but unassuming.

It has held senior status from its very beginning, entering the Herts Senior Cup for the first time in 1893, and winning the cup on the first of five occasions in 1899 with a 2-1 win over Hitchin at St Albans. By this time Ware had been instrumental in founding the East Herts League and had won its championship on two of the three times it had been competed for.

The club was to win it five more times before moving on to the North Middlesex League in 1907 and then also to the Herts County League in 1908. The Championship of the latter came that season in a three-way play off against St Albans City and Welwyn.

After the First World War the Club gained a league and cup double with a sec ond Herts County League Championship and a fourth Herts Senior Cup win in 1922. The scenes in Ware when the team returned with the senior Cup tell us something about the hold that football had on local loyalties at the time.

The local paper reported that “Large crowds awaited the return of the special train to Ware, everybody being in high spirits. The Cup was

marched through the town in front of a cheering throng.” Indeed, it was later recalled that the cup was taken through the town on subsequent nights and that stops were made outside public houses where it was charged with beer before being drained by the crowd.

Shortly after this Ware joined the Spartan League in which they were to enjoy several successes, winning the Division 2(B) Championship in 1926, Division 1 in 1951 with the highest “goals for” total ever achieved by a club in the Spartan League, and the Premier Division in 1952.

In these later years the Club also made significant progress in the old Amateur Cup meeting many famous sides on the way. One of these was Hendon, against whom Ware drew their largest attendance of 3,800 in the 1st Round in January 1957.

Moving on to the Delphian and then Athenian League, Ware enjoyed another successful period.

Two promotions, two league cup wins and two reserve championships paved the way for progress in the FA Cup. In this Ware reached the First Round proper for the first time in 1968 when they travelled to the then Third Division side Luton Town.

The opposition had a 100% home record but the game was scoreless with 30 minutes to go before a judicious substitution broke the stalemate and left Ware beaten 6-1 at the final whistle.

In these successful circumstances it

was not surprising that Ware pressed for entry to the expanding Isthmian League.

This was achieved for season 1975/76 and they have maintained their place in the league ever since. This is thanks most recently to their Division 2 Championship season of 2005/6 which carried them into Division 1 just before Division 2 was disbanded.

Another FA Cup First Round appearance in 2007 has added further distinction with a narrow home defeat against Kidderminster Harriers being watched by 2,123 people, a record for the current ground at Wodson Park.

Before that a tenth Herts Senior Cup Final in 2001 and another in 2008 have emphasised the clubs long history and continuity.

Ware is the first of only three possible candidates to appear in this final in three separate centuries, evidence that it is still one of the county’s leading clubs.

After a poor start to the 2012/2013 season Nicky Ironton was appointed manager and steered the club well clear of relegation worries.

However, a second slow start in 2013/2014 led to the managerial duties being placed in the hands of Kem Kemal who pulled the club away from the relegation zone and who now has a task of making 2014/2015 season a more successful one.

Tuesday 2nd September 2014 | Ryman League Division One North

Ware produced another indifferent display and were fortunate to get away with a draw against a spirited and determined Chatham Town side.

The first chance went to Ware with a foul on Finbarr Robins on the edge of the box, the resulting free kick from Ryan Hervel was comfortably saved by Tom Wellham in the Chatham goal.

Chatham came back with excellent play through Matt Solly, Lee Hales and Philip Kane but saw the ball run out of play.

Chatham with the dangerous Ade Yusuff and Austin Gacheru were always a threat on the counter attack and the Ware defence struggled at times to cope with the pace of the Chatham Town forwards.

More excellent play between Jamie Lawrence, Matt Solly, Lewis Knight and Ade Yusuff saw Ware keeper Rhys Madden save at the feet of Ade Yusuff when about to shoot at goal.

Chatham saw their pressure pay off in the 13th minute when Lee Hales passed to Kane Philip who smashed home the ball to give Chatham a 1-0 lead, Ware then had a chance when good play by Alaa Oujdi, Murat Karagul, Kieran Bishop and Ryan Hervel saw the latter mistime his shot that went wide and out of play for a goal kick.

In the 19th minute Chatham were reduced to ten men when Kane Philip was dismissed for striking out at Finbarr Robins in front of the referee with Finbarr Robins being booked in the same incident.

The sending off did not seem to affect the Chatham side too much and from a Chatham free kick Rhys Madden had to palm away a shot from Chatham skipper Matt Solly.

Ware’s Murat Karagul then had a shot that Tom Wellham failed to hold but managed to gather at the second attempt as Khale Dacosta was about to strike the ball.

Chatham soon after increased their lead in the 32nd minute when a miss kicked clearance by Gareth Madden and then Lee White failing to head clear when under pressure from Ade Yusuff who slotted the ball home into an empty net to give Chatham a 2-0 lead.

In the 41st minute Ware had the ball in the net in a crowded box but the referee blew up for an infringement and disallowed the goal.

Ware started brightly at the beginning of the second half with Samir Hadi passing to Murat Karagul whose shot was deflected for a corner, the corner taken by Ryan Hervel was met by Murat Karagul and his header was cleared off the line, a third chance fell to Murat Karagul but he headed wide.

Ware were dominating the half but had to be alert to the dangerous counter attacks from Austin Gacheru and Ade Yusuff but Ware continued their all out attacks with Alaa Oujdi passing to Kieran Bishop who crossed low into the box but nobody was able to get on the end of the ball.

Ware’s constant pressure almost paid off when Gareth Madden, Ryan Hervel and Lee

White whose long ball was met by Murat Karagul who fired over the bar when in a good position, Khale Dacosta then had a chance when winning the ball on the edge of the box but shot wide.

Ware eventually got the break through and pulled a goal back in the 64th minute when Khale Dacosta’s cross into the box was met by Kieran Bishop who made no mistake and fired home high into the net from close range.

Ryan Wade then had an effort saved by the keeper and then the keeper made an even better save from Kieran Bishop when getting down and pushing the ball round the near post for a corner.

In the 79th minute Ware equalized when Ware Skipper Lee White’s run and powerful low cross into a crowded box was turned in by Joe Loft and level the score at 2-2.

Chatham had a chance soon after when Lee Hales lobbed keeper Rhys Madden and saw his effort hit the post and bounce back out, he was just about ready to follow up when Rhys Madden made a tackle and cleared the ball.

Chatham were still not finished and a couple of counter attacks saw a Corey Holder effort plucked out of the air by Rhys Madden and the same player hitting a shot over the bar, as the game drew to its close Ware had two more chances to take the lead with Kieran Bishop firing over the bar and a Ryan Hervel effort fired wide of the near post.

Saturday 6th September 2014 | Ryman League Division One North

Ware are rapidly becoming the draw specialists of Ryman North as they shared the spoils for a fifth time out of eight at Barkingside.

It may have been Non-league Day but whatever incentives the home side offered to encourage new support the attendance was as sparse as it ever looks on the wide open spaces of Cricklefield Stadium. The teams were not inspired and toiled away without giving anyone new to the non-league game much of a reason to return.

At least for the die-hard Ware supporters in the crowd the result was a victory of sorts over the unavailability of key men.

The manager and his assistant were sidelined (Las Vegas and chicken pox being the respective if disparate reasons) and injured captain Michael Deane did the honours in the dug out to further compound the on-field absences. As compensation George Florence came in at right back and Jack Fowler as centre back.

Even so Ware held their own and it was a pretty even game. However, if there was an edge in the first half it lay in the home side’s Jason Fontaine, who was a constant threat down the left wing. It was his cross from which Lewis Francis headed Barkingside in front after 19 minutes.

The reply came just six minutes later when Kieran Bishop capitalised on a defensive mistake to run forward under pressure and shoot past the keeper into the bottom corner of the net. The pressure had come from Barkingside’s Dan Callaway who had a good game against Ware’s

leading marksman. As a result Bishop was substituted in the second half and replaced by Tommy Wade, newly signed from Hertford. It was the sort of game that cried out for a debut-man’s winning goal but also the sort of game that was unlikely to produce it.

In fact it was Wade’s namesake Ryan who looked likeliest to do damage with a number of free kicks that came close to a goal, though not as close as his lob in added time that came off the post and then a surprised ‘keeper before escaping for a corner. But Barkingside had also hit the Ware post earlier in the half and much as Ware would have welcomed a win it would have been hard on the home side.

Barkingside’s Fontaine was less of a threat in the second period either because he had run his course or because Khale Dacosta was moved to right back. Replacing the luckless Florence in the line-up was Rheo Josephs from the under-21 side. He did enough to suggest he might deserve another chance in the future.

Ware: Rhys Madden, George Florence (Rheo Josephs 46 mins), Samir Hadi, Murat Karagul, Jack Fowler, Lee White (capt.), Khale Dacosta, Finbarr Robins, Kieran Bishop (Tommy Wade 59 mins), Ryan Wade, Marcus Milner.

Unused subs: Kazim Bishop, Gareth Madden, Michael Deane.

ALANWOODWARD

Good evening and a warm welcome to the SCT for tonight’s game against Ware.

The games are coming thick and fast at the moment, so the recovery time for players is less than usual - there’s a couple of knocks in the squad at the moment, but the players are gradually returning to training which is good news.

We have shown in recent weeks that we can dig in deep when our backs are against the wall. At Brentwood we didn’t perform brilliantly, but we managed to grind out a result.

We also got stuck in against Cray, stayed together and picked up the three points that we deserved - this is the sort of fighting spirit that the club needs to show over the coming weeks as we get through some difficulties off the pitch.

It was obviously a big blow to bow out of the FA Cup and, as the board explain elsewhere in tonight’s programme, the finances would have been most welcome at the moment.

We’re trying desperately hard to increase

the attendances at the club, but the boys certainly did their bit with a good showing on Non-League Day at the weekend.

The result may have eventually gone against us for our first league defeat of the campaign, but it was an excellent performance and one that we could be proud of - something which was important after the disappointing manner in which we lost at South Park.

It was a cruel way to lose a topsy-turvy game with an injury time goal, but we go again this evening looking to make amends.

As above, we will continue to stick together and show that we are a club who can pull through in adversity. We’ve started the season brightly, and I’m confident the boys can continue that despite any off-the-field problems.

Give them your full support this evening.

Cheers,Alan

MEAD MASTERMIND

The Mead youth section got off to a fabulous start last Thursday evening with a terrific win down at Ashford United in the Ryman Youth league.

They started extremely brightly, pushing Ashford United back into their own half for the first twenty minutes, creating chance after chance and corner after corner, but unfortunately couldn’t find the net.

Then disaster struck from one of Ashford’s rare counters; a mistimed challenge from the Mead goalkeeper led to a red card.

For the next ten minutes or so Ashford tried to take the advantage, but couldn’t break down the Mead. Then the Mead cleared their heads and took control of the game once again, this time taking the chances for a 2-0 lead before the break.

The Mead came out in the second half fired up and scored once again to take the advantage to 3-0, a well deserved lead.

The game remained one-sided until the last twenty minutes when the one man advantage started to tell and Ashford managed to get themselves back into the game.

ot even some timely substitutions could stem the tide, and with five minutes remaining Ashford were awarded a soft penalty, which they converted to make the last few minutes very tense. The Mead held on to a very well deserved 3-1 away win.

The Mead U18s continued their good start with a 2-2 draw down at Ramsgate last Sunday in the Kent Youth League Premier Division.

The U16s earned a very good away win at Erith & Belvedere in a close encounter that went to the last minute when the Mead scored the winner. They earned a good 2-1 win against one of their closest rivals this season.

The Mead U15s slogged out a 0-0 draw at home on the ATP to Bromley. This is a very good result as this is one of our newer teams, formed during the summer.

Last year’s league and cup winners started their campaign at U14s level with a 2-2 draw at home to Fisher.

Our other new team, the Mead U13s, had a more difficult start to the season with a defeat at home to Cray Wanderers.

The U11s got their Thamesmead experience under way on our new 9-a-side pitch this Sunday.

They put up a very good display of football in a friendly match.

Unfortunately, the result didn’t reflect the performance with a 4-1 defeat.

This coming Sunday will see the following fixtures:U18s welcome Erith & Belvedere to Bayliss Avenue in a 10.30am kick off.

U16s welcome Bromley to Bayliss Avenue in a 3.00pm kick off.

U15s travel to Badgers to play Cray Valley in a 2.00pm kick off.

U14s travel to Bakersfield to play Crayford Arrows in a 10.30am kick off.

U13s are being entertained by Erith & Belvedere at Bayliss Avenue in a 12.30pm kick off.

The U11s start there season on the 21st September away to Crayford Arrows.

Our Ryman Youth League team will travel to Croydon for a 7.45pm kick on Monday 15th September.

Phil Parkinson of Kent Sport News reports

Two teams protecting 100% records – Thamesmead with three wins out of three at home, Needham Market with the same away record – put on a stunning exhibition of football on Non-League Day.

The home side led twice, only to be pegged back on each occasion. Then, after Thamesmead were denied what appeared to be a stonewall penalty nearing stoppage time, Needham Market broke away to snatch the three points.

Thamesmead’s manager, Keith McMahon had called for a reaction from his players following last week’s disappointing FA Cup exit at South Park. He said “Needham are a good side, but we’ve had to swap our side round today, giving a couple of players debuts and changing our system. I thought we were fantastic for about half an hour, put them under pressure and took a deserved lead. Then we’ve conceded three really poor goals from individual mistakes, which is a shame as the lads have been outstanding for me.”

“They are a good side, with a lot of ex-professionals who’ve played a high standard of football. We’ve had four or five under-20’s in there. Rashid was superb, but we’ve had to change him and we’ve gone a bit too irect when the front two were tired through the amount of work they’ve done.”

“Decisions can make and change games and for me it was a blatant penalty on Tyrus. Within a minute, they’ve gone up the other end and scored. We just have to pick ourselves up. Last year, we found that if we made mistakes, we got punished. Today, against another side, we could have got away with those mistakes, but not against a team like Needham.”

Rashid Kamara was handed his first start of the season, and Sean Roberts went close after an hour

was a constant thorn in the Needham Market defence with his direct running, which allowed both Tyrus Gordon-Young and Rob Carter the chance to find space in and around the penalty area. Kamara had two chances off target inside the first 15 minutes, and although Jack Hopkins for Thamesmead, and Needham’s Ryan Crisp also had efforts on goal, neither goalkeeper was seriously tested.

Thamesmead’s Rob Budd was the first custodian called into action, having to react quickly as Lew Tozer’s clearance cannoned off the face of Ian Westlake at almost point-blank range.

Budd’s long clearance on 23 minutes was flicked onto Kamara in acres of space midway inside the Needham Market half. The midfielder slid a perfect ball past Chris Hogg into the path of Gordon-Young, whose first touch took the ball beyond the on-rushing Shaun Phillips.

Left wing-back Darryl Coakley gave Thamesmead a warning of his attacking ability, lashing a drive over the bar after the visitors started to get the ball down and pass it around. He did better on 40 minutes, having started and finished the move. A clearance fell to Coakley, who clipped a ball in behind the Thamesmead defence for Sam Higgins’ run. Higgins laid the ball back into Coakley’s path, for the defender to sweep a shot beyond Budd into the bottom corner.

Budd did well to save from Ryan Crisp at the end of the first half, although the striker will believe he should have done better from 8 yards with the goal at his mercy. Kamara

punished this miss eight minutes into the second half. Kamara picked up a poor cross-field pass and drove towards the area, playing a one-two with Gordon-Young, before drilling a low shot to Phillips’ right side.

Just past the hour, it looked like either side could score with each attack, as Sean Roberts weaved through two challenges to fire over, then Coakley found space at the back post, only to head straight at Budd.

Thamesmead were caught out by a quick corner on 66, as Luke Ingram, whose influence grew as the game progressed, was unchallenged on the edge of the area, and curled a cross-cum-shot over Budd’s flailing arm into the top corner of the net.

Arguably, Thamesmead’s attacking threat was blunted on 77, as Kamara was forced off through injury. Westlake almost took advantage of another mistake, firing a left-footed drive over Budd that cannoned off the face of the bar to safety.

The home side seemed to be denied what appeared to be a stonewall penalty as Hogg’s desperate lunge caught Gordon-Young rather than the ball, but the bench was incensed to see the official pointing for a corner, rather than the spot kick. Within a minute, Westlake poked the ball beyond Tozer’s challenge to set Needham Market away on a 3-on-1 break, led by Keiran Morphew, who teed up fellow substitute George Clarke, who drove the ball past Budd, off the bar, for the winner.

Tyrus Gordon-Young continued his fine goalscoring form Rashid Kamara was MOTM

Page 20: Thamesmead Town v Ware
Page 21: Thamesmead Town v Ware

I was thinking in the days leading up to the game that the squad was looking good, but it suddenly hit home when I had to leave some very good players out of the matchday squad!

After the final training session, the coaching staff got their heads together and decided that to get the best out of the squad we have, we needed to do something drastic with the formation. Without giving too much away we went 3-5-2 as we felt that this suited the players that were available. I feel that this formation makes up for a particular deficiency we have at the moment but, more importantly, allows us to press the ball as high up the pitch as possible - something that allows us to get on the front foot and work the opposition in their own half.

We started the game ok but I felt that we were too slow on the ball and guilty of not using our width properly and also that we were guilty of playing far too many long straight balls which was forcing our strikers to play with their back to goal. We were playing very well at the back though and dropping off well to receive the ball in midfield but I thought that in the attacking third we were maybe guilty of ball watching and being a bit statuesque. I felt that we were the better team in the first half but we had nothing to show for it as we didn’t use our possession that well.

At half-time we stressed the point that we had to use the width more sensibly, that we needed more movement up top and that we needed to share out the dropping off and supporting in midfield.

The second half started much more livelier and you could see that we were pushing the ball about with more intent and purpose. On about the hour mark we won a free kick on our right hand side. Jordan Chambers put in a great in-swinging free kick that was flicked on by Jordan Sandiford but the last touch came off of a defender and beat the keeper to put us one up. This picked us up a little more and we could have added to our score but it took us another 15 minutes to double our lead when Chris Richards showed great perseverence to force the ball home from close range. We could have scored more goals notably a headed chance for Jamar Dobson and another late chance for Chris Richards but it stayed at 2-0.

Overall, I was pleased with the efforts for a first game, we kept a clean sheet and we could have scored more so all in all, a good start.

THE CLEANSHEETCANCERCHALLENGEThe Clean Sheet Cancer Challenge is a new initiative that the Mead have adopted for the campaign.

The first team goalkeeper will wear a special pink kit and the idea is simple -

the goalkeeper will be sponsored to keep those all-important clean sheets.

You can either sponsor per clean sheet, or simply make a donation for the

complete season in one go.

Rob Budd, whose family unfortunately know all about this terrible disease,

explains: “It was a huge shock when my sister Emma first told the family, but

she fought the disease all the way for three years and was always so positive.

“I miss her every day and she was an inspiration to all who knew her, and she

touched everyone that came into her life.”

Do you want to help and do your own thing to raise some money?

Charlotte Cooper braved the ‘Ice Bucket Challenge’ earlier this

afternoon in aid of our appeal, with Buddy amongst those pouring the ice... we’re not sure if that’s called getting your own back or not,

but thank you so very much Charlotte! We’re sure that there might be some pictures in our next programme.

You can back the Clean Sheet Cancer Challenge by visiting www.justiving.com/cleansheet1 to donate today.

Alternatively, find a committee member on matchdays to sign a sponsorship form, or donate cash into the collection boxes all around the Mead Bar - they will be there all season long.

MAN OF THEMATCH

Once again, we’re delighted that the Cooper Family are generously sponsoring our Man of the Match award this year.

Each home game, the Man of the Match award will be presented to the winning player by the Cooper family, pictured above, who have once again been very kind as to sponsor the award.

They got on board last season with the award in the first half of the campaign and it proved to be a huge success - the whole team were even awarded the accolade after a resounding win over Maidstone!

The club would like to extend its sincere thanks to the family for their continued support - Rashid Kamara was the winner of the award on Saturday for his showing in the narrow 3-2 defeat.

The award is presented in the Mead Lounge after the game, so why not hang around with us and congratulate the recipient for a fine performance?

COMMERCIALCORNERA turbulent week off the pitch was followed by heartbreak on it in stoppage time on Saturday... isn’t football just great?!

The way the boys picked themselves up after so many downs during the week was nothing short of fantastic, but sadly the underlying fact is that unless we find some new investments soon, the club will be in serious trouble. Support like that of the Rt Hon Teresa Pearce MP who at the weekend joined us to unveil new perimeter advertising. #

Teresa is pictured below with club Chairman Terry Hill at the unveiling - but we need more advertisers and quickly, which is why the club’s commercial team is mobilising again in getting out and visiting local businesses. So I plea to anyone reading this to give give us any potential leads if possible - whether it’s where you work, any companies that you know of, or just

simply any local businesses you know who might like to get involved with the club - please either call me on 07845 751319 or e-mail me at [email protected] - all we’re asking for is leads and names to contact... leave the rest to us! Finally, the latest winner of the man of the match award goes to skipper Rashid Kamara for his terrific performance against Needham at the weekend. A big and continued thank you goes to the Cooper family for their support of the award - see who wins the prize today at around 5.15pm in the Mead Bar! Remember, even the smallest lead could be vital in the club’s survival - it only takes a phone call! Cheers,Greenie

FIXTURES & RESULTS 2014/15

FOLLOW EDDIE’S MEAD CAB ON THE ROAD TO:

THURROCKTuesday 16th September

Kick-Off: 7.45pm

Head north and through the Dartford Tunnel on the M25, but keep to the left upon your exit from the tunnel as you leave the M25 immediately after at the first junction, J31.

Take the third exit onto Ship Lane, and about one hundred yards up the road to your right will be the entrace to the ground - up a bit of a hill.

We reckon that may be one of the easier trips to navigate to this season!

Note: This game may be postponed depending on Thurrock’s FA Cup result this weekend - so keep an eye out online and we’ll let you know what’s happening.

NEXTHEREThe Mead return to action here at the SCT next weekend, for the visit of Soham Town Rangers on Saturday 20th September.

After a convincing start to the campaign with five wins from their opening seven league games, back to back defeats over the weekend has set Steve Fallon’s side back slightly.

As well as losing 1-0 away to Needham Market to bow out of the FA Cup, Rangers slipped to a 1-0 defeat at Harlow on Saturday before losing away at Aveley 3-1 last night.

Aveley are the division’s form side, with six wins on the trot sending them up into the top four after a wobbly opening to the season, so it is no blemish on Fallon’s men - they will, however, be keen to set the record straight this weekend and get back on track when they visit Maldon & Tiptree.

With almost two goals a game so far, there has been no shortage of firepower for Rangers, a 5-1 thumping of lowly Redbridge an early season highlight.

And, having fallen just short of a play-off place last season, Fallon’s men will be looking to go one better this time around - their start would suggest they may well be on course to do so, as well as ensure a tough test for the Mead next Saturday.
