KEITHMcMAHON

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to Bayliss Avenue for today’s Ryman League Division One fixture against Soham Town Rangers.

Firstly, may I take this opportunity to welcome Steve Fallon and his fourth placed side here this afternoon - we hope that the motorways behaved themselves on your journey here from Cambridgeshire and that you’ll enjoy your time with us this afternoon. Everything went wrong for us on Tuesday night at Thurrock - the referee’s performance and losing Buddy with his groin after ten minutes.

We came away with a defeat but to be honest, I’m just glad that we didn’t come away with a couple of broken legs as there was two outrageous challenges in there to add to Buddy getting shamed against the post.

But I felt for the lads, I really did. Richard Butler went in goal and, whilst he did ok, he won’t be in goal this afternoon! It obviously was the turning point as before then I thought we had a couple of decent chances, and I didn’t

think that they were going to hurt us too much. Some of the lads who came in on Tuesday did ok, but I’m just sorry for the lads that a referee’s performance has spoiled everything.

The lads will keep trying and trying and not getting the rub of the green, but it will come - we’ll roll our sleeves up and go again this afternoon. We’ve been let down at the moment by a few lads who have upset the apple cart and we’re now entering a bit of a period of change throughout the whole club. We’ve got certain people out of the club now though, so hopefully we can move on.

I cant knock the lads for their workload on Tuesday, but I just hope that we can get a bit of luck and things go our way. Yes, there was some good stuff, but there were some very bad

decisions on the pitch and we could have kept the ball better. But when you can’t pass the ball to your keeper you’ve lost half your game. I went and saw the referee after the game and some of his answers weren’t too helpful if I’m completely honest - he saw one of my points of view, but there was just no consistency from him on Tuesday night and that’s all I ask. We’ve brought in Callum McNaughton since our last home game and he’s a player who has great pedigree.

Tuesday was his first game of the season - he’s played for West Ham’s first team as well as AFC Wimbledon, and he’s a good player - and we may hve another in place by the time you’re reading this if all goes to plan.

Hopefully, Callum can get some

minutes under his belt quickly so that we’ll see just what a good player he is. We just need to continue to believe and all stick together, which may have been the problem. A couple of them want to go and do their own thing and I’m going to let them go now - we’re better off without some people.

We will move forward and everyone can either decide whether they want to stay and play for me and everyone around the club or not. More importantly, they need to look around the changing room and start playing for the guy next to him in the changing room.

Some of the lads did that at Thurrock on Tuesday and I’ll credit them for it. The boys are sticking to it magnificently and I can’t say enough to praise them. We’ve received a seven day notice for

Lewis Tozer but nothing for Sean Roberts. Sean doesn’t want to play for the club anymore, so he can wait until someone now comes in for him. After everything that we’ve done, I feel very let down by that if I’m honest after two years.

As I’ve said though, I only want people in who want to play for us. Sadly in football, in this day and age, there is little loyalty left in the game, and I’m finding that out by people who I had really stuck by closely.

But the people I really feel sorry for are those who were sitting in the dressing room next to them. Begrudgingly, I suppose, fair play to them because that’s football in 2014.

Please get behind the lads this afternoon - your support is always appreciated.

Enjoy the game,Keith

PAULBOWDEN-BROWN

May I welcome the directors, officials and players of Soham Town Rangers to our home, Sporting Club Thamesmead, for today’s game, and I hope after your short stay and some refreshments you all have a safe journey home.

I am writing these notes on a Wednesday evening as I recover from an hour on the treatment table whilst my chiropractor was trying to get me to today’s game!

In hindsight, going to Tuesday’s game was too early after surgery and did more harm than good, but although I’m in quite a bit of discomfort I want to get these notes in on time to avoid the wrath of the programme editors.

As I say, I went to the game on Tuesday night and, whilst I’m sure Keith will cover the events of the game, in my opinion you’re fighting the odds as soon as you lose your goalkeeper through injury.

Even though he was injured and in considerable pain, rest assured that Buddy continued before going off at the break.

I was advised that he may be out for weeks but, as one of the team’s

mainstays, I hope to see him back soon.

As said, we were up against it and it resulted in a 3-0 defeat. They’re a good side, but I don’t think it tells the true story of the game.

We were certainly hard working opponents and fought for everything, but the referee made some very dubious decisions to say the least.

I think we could have put a couple of goals of our own onto the scoresheet if we’d had a little more rub of the green.

It has been well-documented recently that we had suffered a financial setback.

Our first team sponsor was put into a position that meant he was unable to honour his commitment and, coupled with our swift FA Cup exit, it left us in a troublesome position.

Keith and I asked that the playing staff could wait for their payments for a couple of weeks whilst we filled the void, and I’m pleased to say that we’re now in a position to honour that.

Our players will now once again be paid as promised and I would personally like to thank them for their support during a difficult, and unexpected, time.

Finding ourselves in that situation brought back many memories of the financial hiccups we suffered when I was at Maidstone.

The only way to deal with such eventualities was to hit the cause of the problem head on and deal with - if you don’t, you can be assured it will only come back repeatedly.

I’ve fully taken on board the causes for our recent situation and have had to make some harsh business decisions with regards to the running of the club.

THE BOARDROOM

Page 7: Thamesmead Town v Soham Town Rangers

To survive, we must change the organisational structure and, to that end, I am putting together a revised business plan for the FA and our league.

It was always my intention to enhance the current formal structure of the limited company, but it’s just happened sooner than we anticipated.

I do believe that the restructure will help to secure the club’s financial footing and ensure that we are protected from similar experiences reoccuring.

However, for this to work we must all work together as one. In my opinion, there is no room for non-executive decisions within a football club of our size any longer.

These changes are needed if we’re to ensure that the grief, hassles and personal stress that Keith and the committee endured during the eight years of delays to the SCT building are seen as worthwhile.

We have to ensure that, out of the despondency, a well-oiled company has risen that can continue to play football for many years to come here at Bayliss Avenue.

For now, let’s enjoy another afternoon of football and here’s to three points.

TERRY’S AWAYYou might notice an absence in this afternoon’s programme and Tuesday night’s programme - and that’s because Mead Chairman, Terry Hill, has gone on holiday.

FA TROPHYIt has been confirmed that the Mead’s opening game in this year’s FA Trophy is to be played on Sunday 19th October away to Aylesbury United, kicking off at 3pm.

WELCOMEA warm welcome to central defender, Callum McNaughton. Callum made his debut in midweek having previously been with AFC Wimbledon - we hope he enjoys his stay with us.EVENING ALL!

You may have noticed at our last home game that we were visited by our local PC Chris Molnar who enjoyed his evening with us and promised to start enquiries to find out just how Ware managed to leave with all three points!

Seriously though, we’d like to thank PC Molnar for taking time out of his busy schedule to come and see us and we look forward to seeing again and working with him.

SOCIAL MEADYou can keep in touch with everything that’s going on at the SCT every day online. The club’s website has had a few technical problems this week, but should be back sorted by now at www.thamesmeadtownfc.com - whilst you can also follow the club if you’re on social networks, with the Twitter account @ThamesmeadTFC with live goal updates and all the latest news as it happens.

LATEST NEWS

Page 10: Thamesmead Town v Soham Town Rangers

SOHAM TOWN RANGERS

Soham Town Rangers visit the SCT this afternoon as they look to rekindle they early season form here.

Having kicked off the season with five wins from their opening seven matches, Steve Fallon’s side will have been slightly taken aback by the three defeats in four that brings them up to date.

A convincing 5-1 thumping of Redbridge remains the early season highlight, but already Fallon’s men have played as many as three games more than some of their rivals and will want to revive their early momentum sooner, rather than later.

The boys from Julius Martin Lane narrowly missed out on a play-off berth last season, as they ended up in eighth position - and you can be sure that they will be vying to go one better this time around.

With the Mead currently in stuttering form themselves, it will certainly be a difficult test this afternoon with two teams looking to play their way back into form.

Rangers’ boss Fallon, though, is happy with the squad at his disposal as they look to mount a serious promotion bid this term.

“We’re improving all the time and we’ve got a decent squad,” he told the Cambridge News.

“We’ve got a little bit of competition for places, which is what you need, and you’ve got to be able to change things when things aren’t going your way.”

Keith and the Mead will be hoping though that a return to form evades them for one more game, at least. We are surely in for another entertaining battle at the SCT this afternoon!

CLUB HISTORYSoham Town Rangers were formed in 1947 as a result of a merger between Soham Rangers (1919) and Soham Town (1920). The Julius Martin Lane ground, which at the time was the home of Soham Town, is still the home of the club today, after it was purchased in 1952.

The new club started life in the Cambs League, also running a Reserve team. In 1956, they joined the Peterborough League where they were to remain until 1963. During their time there, they won the league and the league cup on two separate occasions. A measure of the level of support enjoyed by non-league clubs in those days was the fact that on their first home game of the season, on August 22nd 1956, a local derby against near neighbours Ely City, over 500 match day programmes were sold - Unfortunately, the 6-2 drubbing for the hosts took the shine off the day.

The club joined the Eastern Counties League in 1963, and remained there until 2008.

During this time, considerable ground development has taken place - The social club was built in 1968, new dressing rooms and showers were erected in 1979, along with a grandstand extension. In 1981, a lounge bar extension was added to the social club. Floodlights were erected in 1983, and were inaugurated by the visit of an Arsenal XI in front of 1200 spectators. A new grandstand eventually replaced the original wooden structure at the beginning of the 1990’s, whilst various other developments have taken place in order to qualify the club to compete at step four in the non-league pyramid.

Soham enjoyed considerable success in the Cambridgeshire Invitation Cup during the 1990’s, winning it on three separate occasions, including for the first time in their history in 1991 defeating March Town United, before repeating the feat again in 1998 and 1999 against Wisbech Town and Newmarket Town respectively. The Greens

were also the first winners of the Millennium League Cup, when they defeated Diss Town on penalties in the final in 2001.

The 2007-08 season was to be the clubs most successful season to date winning the Premier Division for the first time, beating nearest challengers Needham Market 4-0 on the final day of the season to clinch the title in front of 680 spectators at the Lane, and with it promotion to the Southern League for the first time in their history.

In the first three seasons in the Southern League, Soham recorded finishes of 15th, 11th and 17th. At the end of the 2010-11 season, Ian Benjamin, who had been at the club for six seasons and was in charge of the 2008 title winning side, stepped down from his position as 1st Team Manager.

Soham transferred to the Ryman League Division One North for the 2011/12 season with former striker Andrew Furnell returning to take over as Player/Manager. However

with the Greens languishing near the foot of the table, Furnell was replaced by former Histon Manager Steve Fallon and Ian Hart in March, with the club finishing the season fourth from bottom.

It was a successful campaign for Soham’s other sides though, with the Reserves returning to the Kershaw Premier Division after finishing as runners-up in Senior A, whilst the Under 18s progressed to the 1st round of the FA Youth Cup, where they were beaten by Charlton Athletic in front of a crowd of over 500 people at the Lane.

The 2012/13 season saw Soham record their highest ever League position, finishing seventh in the Ryman League North Division, five points outside the play-offs.

Despite going into the New Year on top of the table the club finished last season in eighth place, although won the Cambs Invitation Cup beating CRC 6-1 at the Abbey Stadium.

ALANWOODWARD

Good afternoon and a warm welcome to the SCT for today’s game against Soham Town Rangers.

After the last couple of weeks that the club has had, I just want everyone to stay positive!

We’ve had players leaving and a run of results going against us, so I admit that it has been a hard time. As I always say though: “This is a bit of a us - when our backs are against the wall, we always come out fighting.”

Tuesday night’s game summed it up for us at the moment, I think. Buddy was smashed and the referee didn’t even award a foul, his groin goes and the birthday boy Richard Butler had to deputise for him.

Well done to Butts though, as he has a great attitude and it was full credit to him for stepping in. Even in defeat, the boys kept on going and that’s what we are all about here - hard graft.

For myself, it has been a busy old week as,

along with the Gaffer, we went to Fisher on Monday, had the game on Tuesday, saw the U21s on Wednesday and had first team training on Thursday evening - as you can see, it’s not just about turning up for games!

On the injury front, Derek Duncan put in a full ninety minutes for the U21s on Wednesday which was great to see, and Farai remains the only longer term injury.

As you know, the games are coming thick and fast so there’s little time for the players to rest up. They’re having to go through the pain barrier and play with knocks, just like Buddy did on Tuesday - despite moving around as though he had a false leg!

Keep the faith.

Cheers,Alan

“Derek Duncan put in a full ninety minutes on Wednesday evening for the U21s which was great to see & gives Keith another option for the first team selection”

The U18s continued their sterling start to the season in the Ryman Youth League by collecting their second league away to Croydon.

In trying conditions with a pitch that really isnt to the standard the league would expect, the boys started slow and went behind to an early goal.

They regained their composure, though, and started to grow into the game and got their rewards with an equaliser a quarter of an hour before half time.

They came out in the second half and contained Croydon really well, not allowing them to get into the game.

The pressure finally told on Croydon as they conceded a superb goal from Thamesmead in the last few minutes of normal time, to help the Mead secure what was a well-deserved win. Next up for the Ryman Youth team is a FA Youth Cup tie away to Greenwich Borough on Friday 26th September at Dartford’s Princes Park ground - kick off is at 7.30pm. In the Kent Youth League the U18s produced a fine performance at home to Erith & Belvedere. They won

very comfortably by a 3-0 scoreline and now move on to playing Cray Valley at Badgers this coming Sunday in an 11am kick off. The U16s also continued their winning start to the season with another impressive 7-2 win at home to Bromley.

That victory takes them to the top of a very early table but, whilst still in its formative stages, it shows their intentions for this season.

Next up for them is a home league fixture against Phoenix here at the SCT tomorrow in a 3pm kick off. The U15s came up against a very good Cray Valley side and, despite a very good performance, went down 3-0.

They have a break this weekend but will be back in action the next weekend as they travel to face Tonbridge Angels. The U14s found their shooting boots this weekend and fired a very impressive away win.

They stuck six past Crayford Arrows to pick up a terrific 6-0 victory in the

league. They now move on to playing VCD Athletic away this weekend in another league game as the season really gets going. The U13s are finding life tough in the Kent Youth League, but they are still applying themselves well and trying to play good football.

Unfortunately, the results are just not yet coming as they played away to Erith & Belvedere in the league where they eventually lost 5-2 in a thrilling game.

Their next games sees them entertain HF Sports Paulista at The Mead in a 2pm kick off. And, at last, the U11s will finally get to see some league action this week with an away fixture to Petts Wood.

They played in the SEL Kent leagues tournament last weekend and put in a very good performance, making it all the to the final and were just beaten in the end. Well done to the boys and we look forward to seeing them play at the Mead over the coming season. Please feel free to come down on a Sunday and support the teams from the Mead’s youth section.

“YOU CAN’T WRITE THIS!”

How many times have you been to a game and walked away thinking: “They couldn’t

have scripted that, even if they wanted to!”? After a remarkable Champion’s League game

recently, Mike Green takes a look back at five astonishing matches.

I was only watching the Ludogorets v Steau Bucharest game through Sky’s red button as Mrs Green wasn’t well and had gone to bed with the children. Allow me to set the scene - Steau won the first leg by the only goal and were only seconds away, when out of nothing, in the 93rd minute, a thirty-yard volley flies into the Steau net to level things up on aggregate. Extra time followed at a decent pace compared to most extra periods with chances at both ends, before in the last minute, the Steau central defender, who looked uncannily like Sol Campbell, sprinted through only for the Ludogorets keeper to come flying out from goal and clobber the onrushing defender into next week. All Bulgarian subs were made, so central defender Cosmin Moti goes in goal, and we head for penalties. Now we’re told that Moti is a Romanian international defender, and promptly concedes the first penalty before incredibly scoring the first Bulgarian one himself... then comes the drama.

Moti makes a sensational save to put the Bulgarians ahead and then wins the shoot out 4-3 on penalties with a second great stop to spark scenes of catch me if you can as our hero sprints into the crowd followed by the rest of the Ludogorets squad to celebrate an incredible win!

Here’s some other unlikely comebacks: Spurs 3-5 Man United (2001)The very definition of a game of two halves, Tottenham were irresistible in their first period domination of the reigning champions, Les Ferdinand and Christian

Ziege adding to Dean Richards’s early strike to put Spurs on course for a famous victory.

After the break, however, the roles were reversed with United, presumably fresh from 15 minutes with a hairdryer, overwhelming the hosts. Andy Cole, Laurent Blanc, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Juan Sebastian Veron and David Beckham scored the goals. Liverpool 3-3 AC Milan, Champions League final (2005)Some Liverpool fans had started to leave the Ataturk Stadium at half-time after a first minute goal from Paolo Maldini and two from Hernan Crespo had given Milan a 3-0 half-time lead. Come on, be honest - did you turn the game off at half time? Honestly?

Those who did missed the game was spun on its axis in a frenetic spell that saw Steven Gerrard, Vladimir Smicer and Xabi Alonso level before Jerzy Dudek produced one of

the most incredible of reflex saves to deny Andrei Shevchenko’s point blank header, before old ‘spaghetti legs’ Dudek saved literally the best for the penalty shoot out before saving from Andrea Pirlo and poor old Shevchenko again to complete the ‘Miracle of Istanbul’. Charlton 7-6 Huddersfield, Divison 2 (1957)One for the locals with long memories! Charlton manager Jimmy Trotter pulled off what has to be one of the most effective tactical changes ever seen when he moved left winger Johnny Summers across the front positions through the duration of the match in this second division game. Summers had already scored once before the first change, but 10-man Charlton still trailed 5-1 with less than half an hour to play. He scored four more after the break and had a hand in the two other Charlton goals.

Finally one of the most incredible comebacks was seen during the 1954 World Cup Finals in Switzerland. On June 20th, the Germans had been thumped 8-3 in the group stages by a Hungary team unbeaten in 30 odd matches and the clear favourites to win the whole competition especially when they were to face the hapless Germans again in the final just 14 days later. The Final appeared to be going right to script when Ferenc Puskas and Zoltan Czibor put Hungary 2-0 up inside eight minutes. However, what became known as the ‘Miracle of Bern’ was completed by a dramatic comeback in the rain by a German side that acted as a focal point for post-Second World War recovery for the nation.

THE BIG FEATURE

Page 19: Thamesmead Town v Soham Town Rangers

A fortnight ago eyes turned to the Non-League game with attendances swelling due to the international break and hugely popular Non-League Day taking place.

That the grass-roots game is celebrated and given the promotion it deserves is fantastic - but Saturday also marked the start of a competition that does exactly what Non-League Day does on an almost bi-weekly basis.

Disdain for the FA Cup seems to be increasing every year with top-flight clubs treating it more and more like a B Team competition - and they really thought having a whole league for it would be a good idea?

Even the FA Trophy took some battering last year courtesy of some high profile managers, and a shake-up of that competition has been mooted with the scrapping of replays discussed.

But if there’s one FA competition that continues to show the beauty of the grass-roots game it’s the FA Vase.

I make no bones about the fact that the Vase is by far my favourite FA competition. The FA Cup will always be special, but let’s face it – after the Non-League clubs have been knocked out, it all gets a bit boring.

The Trophy is still enjoyable and was given a new lease of life by Gosport Borough’s amazing run to the final last year, but Vanarama Conference clubs can often take the early rounds lightly.

In the Vase, every single game is played with maximum effort and maximum passion. The goal of Wembley is a massive

one for these players.

A lot of footballers in the Vase will play merely for their expenses. This is football at its most basic and most beautiful. Players playing for the love of the game and not for the monetary rewards.

Semi-professionals getting to Wembley is special, but amateurs? That’s one step further. Just last year we had Step 6 club St Andrews get to the semis and a year previous, Tunbridge Wells made the final.

These sort of clubs are usually based on a bunch of mates playing for fun on a Saturday afternoon. For them to step out on the same turf as Wayne Rooney and Daniel Sturridge is almost unthinkable.

The attendance of 5,431 under the famous arch was disappointing last season, but let’s not forget we had West Auckland, who reached the final just two years before, and Sholing, who maybe lost some ‘day-out’ fans due to fellow Hampshire side Gosport’s success.

Moving the final away from Wembley has been mentioned for the past few years but I for one think it would be great shame.

The FA hardly have a sparkling name when it comes to grass-roots football and moving the famous old competition away from their headquarters would only increase the disparity in relation to the professional game.

Step 5, 6 and 7 clubs began their journey to the home of English football last Saturday in the first round qualifying and it was fitting it fell on the same weekend as Non-League Day.

Your Worsbrough Bridge Athletics, your Barnoldswick Towns, your Clipstones and your Plymouth Parkways... they’re hardly household names, are they?

But by reaching the latter stages of the Vase, they can give their club much-needed publicity and attention.

By speaking to clubs who make the quarter-finals and later, you learn about the unique histories of not just the managers and players but also the teams themselves.

Very rarely will you see 5-5 draws but in the Vase they’re almost a given. Excitement doesn’t come much more often in football.

While the mainstream media may rarely focus on it, the competition will continue to fly the grass-roots flag.

And if Mr Dyke et al want to take some advice on what football should be based on, they could do much worse than getting to their local club and taking in a Vase tie.

THE NON-LEAGUE PAPER

Page 20: Thamesmead Town v Soham Town Rangers
Page 21: Thamesmead Town v Soham Town Rangers

When we took on Barkingside a few weeks back, we continued with our favoured formation but were pushed into a few changes from the side that had played Grays the previous week. We started the game brightly and we soon got a foot-hold in the centre of the pitch and our pace in wide areas was causing all sorts of problems. It was the pace of Sean Ayeomoni that led to a rash challenge just inside the box leading to a penalty, which Harry Goldsmith duly scored. It was pleasing to see that we wanted to go forward still despite taking the lead. This paid off when Luke Saggers cut the ball back for Chris Richards to fire home from 8 yards out to put us 2-0 up at half time. The second half started just the same as the first half had finished, with us on top. It took us a while to add to the score but Luke Saggers scored the goal of the evening when he bent the ball around the keeper from the corner of the box – great finish. We kept pressing and could have had more goals but we waited until 15 minutes from the end to complete the scoring. A great cross from Max Murphy was headed home by Josh James – a fantastic header as the ball was ever so slightly behind him.

Final Score: Mead U21s 4 – Barkingside U21s 0 Last Saturday, we were kindly invited down to play at Worthing. They are a decent club with a good side doing well in the south division of our league. The home side started quickly and a couple of pieces of really poor defending put us 2-0 down after 15 minutes. We sorted ourselves out though and got level at the break with a great shot from the edge of the area by Adrian Brown and a good run and finish by Sam Orisatoki. The second half wasn’t a particularly good performance by us. We ended up with 10 men due to injuries and I really had to get in to the players during a drinks break to get a reaction. At this stage we were 4 – 2 down. After my intervention, the 10 men of Thamesmead played much better. It was a weakened side with trialists and fringe players but we travelled with only 13 players and I was disappointed that more players were not prepared to make the journey.

Final Score: Worthing U21s 4 – The Mead U21s 2 Our midweek game this week was a league home

fixture against Enfield. Some changes had to be made to the players and the formation to accommodate the players selected – I rewarded some players for making the trip to Worthing. We started the game sluggishly, which just isn’t like us – no one could have complained if we had conceded a couple of goals early on, we were that disjointed. I shuffled things about with a change in formation and we started to get in to the game. After 20 minutes Les Thompson was clean through and brought down just outside the area by a cynical challenge designed to stop him without giving a penalty away. Despite giving the free kick, the ref kept his cards in his pocket. In time added on in the first half we won a free kick on our right. Ainsley Everett put a great ball in and Jamar Dobson made a decent run to get in front of his marker and flick the ball in to the net at the near post - one nil to the home side at half time. I really thought we had got the message through to the players at half time about what was going wrong. However, we were doing ok until Kamarl Duncan saw the ball out of play only for the attacker to cross the ball in from off the pitch. The ball was tucked home and to everyone’s amazement the goal was allowed to stand! This knocked the stuffing right out of us and we folded under Enfield pacey attack. We defended poorly to let them steal in for a second goal and then let them waltz through us for a third.

Final Score: The Mead U21s 1 – Enfield U21s 3 I can take the defeat, even though it was our first loss in three and the decisions went against us, but the manner in which we capitulated showed that there is still a lot of work to do with this side. Sure, we were weakened at the back and in wide areas but we just didn’t compete. Our only bookings were for dissent and that speaks volumes – we need to toughen up, quickly, and learn that we have to stop teams playing. I dont mean to set out and kick players to stop them playing - I mean we have to compete for everything and ensure that we become as difficult as possible to break down and more importantly, to take our set backs and be mentally strong enough to cope so that we can get back in to games. Finally we’re still on the look out for helpers on Matchdays - please email me at [email protected] if you’re interested.

THE CLEANSHEETCANCERCHALLENGEThe Clean Sheet Cancer Challenge is a new initiative that the Mead have adopted for the campaign.

The first team goalkeeper will wear a special pink kit and the idea is simple -

the goalkeeper will be sponsored to keep those all-important clean sheets.

You can either sponsor per clean sheet, or simply make a donation for the

complete season in one go.

Rob Budd, whose family unfortunately know all about this terrible disease,

explains: “It was a huge shock when my sister Emma first told the family, but

she fought the disease all the way for three years and was always so positive.

“I miss her every day and she was an inspiration to all who knew her, and she

touched everyone that came into her life.”

Do you want to help and do your own thing to raise some money?

Charlotte Cooper braved the ‘Ice Bucket Challenge’ earlier this

afternoon in aid of our appeal, with Buddy amongst those pouring the ice... we’re not sure if that’s called getting your own back or not,

but thank you so very much Charlotte! We’re sure that there might be some pictures in our next programme.

You can back the Clean Sheet Cancer Challenge by visiting www.justiving.com/cleansheet1 to donate today.

Alternatively, find a committee member on matchdays to sign a sponsorship form, or donate cash into the collection boxes all around the Mead Bar - they will be there all season long.

MAN OF THEMATCH

Once again, we’re delighted that the Cooper Family are generously sponsoring our Man of the Match award this year.

Each home game, the Man of the Match award will be presented to the winning player by the Cooper family, pictured above, who have once again been very kind as to sponsor the award.

They got on board last season with the award in the first half of the campaign and it proved to be a huge success - the whole team were even awarded the accolade after a resounding win over Maidstone!

The club would like to extend its sincere thanks to the family for their continued support - Jack Hopkins picked up the award last time out as the Mead lost to Ware.

The award is presented in the Mead Lounge after the game, so why not hang around with us and congratulate the recipient for a fine performance?

COMMERCIALCORNERA welcome this afternoon to all those who have made the trip to the SCT from Cambridgeshire as we return home to Ryman One North action.

It’s been a tough couple of weeks for everyone involved at the club as we search for a new first team sponsor. It certainly does put the pressure on for us to go and find that local company who wants their name across the shirts of the “best team in Thamesmead” as we travel around the league this season! We’ve been working hard in the past few weeks on a number of sponsorship and advertising deals - now we just need the companies or the individuals to take us up on them.

So I plea to anyone reading this can you give us any potential leads - whether it’s where you work, or if you know someone with their own company, or just simply know of a local business who might like to get involved with the club, please either call me on 07845 751319 or e-mail me at [email protected]. All we’re asking for is leads and names to contact... leave the rest to us!

We’ve also come up with Mead fixture posters which are available from the Mead Bar or from the boardroom this afternoon. If you know somewhere who will be willing to display one for us, please let us know and we’ll give them a thank you in these pages! Finally, the latest winner of the home Man of the Match award goes to Jack Hopkins for his performance against Ware ten days ago. A big and continued thank you to the Cooper Family for their support of the award - see who wins the prize today at around 5:15pm in the Mead Bar! Remember, even the smallest lead could be vital in the club’s survival - it only takes a phone call! Cheers - and thanks,Greenie

“It was nothing short of fantastic the way the boys picked themselves up at the weekend after a week of down, but we really need your help!”

FOLLOW EDDIE’S MEAD CAB ON THE ROAD TO:

REDBRIDGESaturday 27th September

Kick-Off: 3.00pm

Follow the A12 around the Olympic Stadium until you reach Gants Hill underground station.

At this roundabout, take the second exit onto the A123 and follow the road until you get to Redbridge Magistrates Court on your right.

Turn right, signposted for Craven Gardens parking and, as you go round the bend, turn left, again following the signs for Craven Gardens parking.

Take the immediate right turn, go straight over the roundabout and, as you go over the bridge, the ground will appear on your right hand side.

NEXTHEREThe Mead return to action here at the SCT in three days’ time, as Great Wakering visit on Tuesday night for a 7.45pm kick-off.

Despite playing eleven games already this season, Rovers are rooted to the bottom of the league table already, having picked up just four points from their opening fixtures.

Nine defeats from ten left them in that position, and they will be hoping that a 2-2 draw with Tilbury in midweek may have helped to stop the rot as they look to claw their way out of trouble, even at this early stage.

Dan Trenkel’s side are newly-promoted having won the Essex Senior League, but they will need to rapidly adjust to life soon if they aren’t going to simply become relegation fodder, even as the table continues to take some sort of shape.

A 5-1 defeat at home to Sudbury a couple of weeks ago is, thankfully, still the exception rather than the rule for Rovers, with most of their defeats being to the odd goal or two, rather than a capitulation. It will at least provide some solace that some more results aren’t too far away.

But, with six of their next eight fixtures away from home, it doesn’t look set to be getting any easier any time soon.
