FROM THE EDITOR...Welcome back to Sporting Club Thamesmead today as we welcome Leiston - the big games keep coming thick and fast!

The Mead will be hoping to stretch their current unbeaten run further this afternoon, but three points will be a much welcome bonus following four successive draws.

Forgetting the League Cup defeat to Ware, it is five league games unbeaten for Keith McMahon’s side now, with seven points in that time, and with a big game at home to Steve Ball’s Leiston side tonight, everything is all to play for as we head into the festive period.

The Mead are back in action here again next weekend, with Lowestoft the final visitors to Sporting Club Thamesmead before Christmas.

THE CHAIRMAN

FROM THE DUGOUT:

KEITHMcMAHON“I thought our tempo was excellent & some

of the football the lads were playing was simply exceptional in the first half”

Good afternoon and welcome back for today’s game against Leiston, and welcome to Steve Ball and his Leiston side - I hope you enjoy your short stay here and I hope you have a safe journey home afterwards.

Since my last set of programme notes we’ve had three games, and each of them has resulted in a draw - if I’m honest, though, at least two of those ought to have seen us collect all three points.

I have been happy with how things are going at the moment, though. Our last game here saw us draw 1-1 with Hampton & Richmond but, particularly in the first half, we played some of our best football of the season and I think we should have won.

We could have been 3-0 up within the opening fifteen minutes if it wasn’t for their goalkeeper making a few outstanding saves!

We did eventually take the lead though when Theo Fairweather-Johnson rifled home a stunning thirty-yard strike, and it was a well-deserved lead at that too.

I thought that our tempo was excellent and some of the football that the lads were playing throughout that half was

simply exceptional.

However, to give credit to Hampton, they stepped things up a gear in the first twenty minutes after the break, and it was during this time that they equalised.

We responded well and the game finished in a real end-to-end encounter, with both sides missing changes to win it late on.

I would suggest that the draw gave

us the confidence to head into two tough away games though, and that confidence shone through last Saturday as we travelled to Lewes.

Lewes are having a good season so far and will be hoping they can edge into the play-offs but, again, we could have put the game beyond doubt in the first forty-five minutes.

We played really well during that first half and, again, went in front through another effort by Theo which followed

Page 5: Thamesmead Town v Leiston

THE MANAGER

some great work in the build-up by Danny Phillips.

We then thundered the crossbar and also watched as a great one-on-one opportunity went begging, whilst their keeper miskicked a clearance but, just as our luck has been, it spun back to him before Danny Phillips could quite capitalise on the chance.

Lewes started to take more possession in the second half, but they didn’t have a shot on goal and we really looked comfortable, not to mention those first half chances.

Our shape was excellent and it really looked as though we would be taking home the three points we deserved, but they scored in stoppage time in quite fortuitous circumstances.

A thirty-five yard shot, rather speculatively at that, struck Lewis Tozer on the edge of the box and the deflection carried it through into the bottom corner.

To say we were all gutted at the final whistle shortly after was an understatement having deserved a huge three points, but we had to pick ourselves up for the tough trip to Canvey Island in midweek.

I would certainly have settled for a point had it been offered to me beforehand but, with the way that we performed, I have to admit that the result felt like a defeat.

One of the biggest highlights was my pleasure at giving young academy product, Adam Ramadan, his senior league debut following his performance in the cup recently.

Adam is a really promising prospect coming through and, for all those trying to stir things and suggesting we don’t care about our youth, just take a look over how many youngsters have come through during my time at

Bayliss Avenue.

I don’t think there has been any other club in the local area to have given youngsters the chances that we have, and there will be plenty more to follow young Adam.

That trip to Canvey in midweek eventually saw us draw 2-2 and, overall, I thought we deserved the draw, especially after our second half performance.

After the first minute we were immediately up against it, with the hosts going a oal up from a penalty. I thought we were very poor in those first forty-five minutes and the players weren’t doing what they had been in the previous four games.

Later on in the game we found ourselves 2-0 down before the break, and it is an understatement to say that I was fuming.

If I’m being completely honest, I probably wasn’t in the best frame of mind heading into the game with some off-the-field issues that have been happening, so I think I was waiting to explode.

I told myself to keep calm at half-time or I might regret it - I did consider that if I started to shout in the dressing room I might even end up having a heart attack or simply shouting a load of nonsense anyway.

I told them a few points and struggled to hold it back, but I told them I wanted a better forty-five minutes or that was me and I was done, before walking out. I wanted a reaction.

I got the reaction, though, and the second half was much better and we looked the better side.

Every time we put the ball in behind their back our they were struggling, and with twenty minutes to go we pulled a goal back.

Tyrus Gordon-Young was the man on target for us and, from there, it was all us for that final twenty minute spell.

I thought the referee was influenced by the home crowd throughout the game, but we managed an equaliser in stoppage time - and isn’t it about time that a late goal went in our favour rather than the other way around for a change?!

Uche Ibemere managed to scramble the ball over the line from

Jordan Hibbert’s free-kick, and it was what we

deserved.

We had a heart-to-heart on the pitch and I also thanked the lads for that

second half - we’re building a great team

spirit at the moment and we’re now five league

games unbeaten which is a massive achievement.

We do need to build on that though and start converting those points into wins - that needs to start today.

Leiston are only just above us in the league, and a team we will need to catch up if we’re going to survive in the Ryman Premier come May.

As always, it will be a difficult game though and they come into this afternoon off the back of a big win, but if we show the same passion and desire that we have in recent weeks then I’m sure we can get the result we are looking for.

Enjoy the game,The Gaffer

FROM THE BOARDROOM:

PAULBOWDEN-BROWN“We now have a firm foundation to build on & success is in our own hands - we won’t rely on others dropping points around us”

THE BOARDROOM

May I welcome the directors, officials, players and supporters of Leiston to the SCT and a safe journey home after an enjoyable game and refreshments.

Although I didn’t travel with the team to Lewes last weekend, I am told by Keith that the team were brilliant and, unfortunately as has happened before this season, it was a last-gasp equaliser in the dying seconds.

I decided to travel along to Canvey Island in midweek though, on a bitter and chilling night. It was made worse by the proximity of the ground to the Thames estuary and things couldn’t have started worse with our defence being split open inside the opening minute.

Canvey scored from the resulting penalty and, before half-time, they had made it two. After the break in which I had sampled the good beer in the bar, we came out looking very strong, though.

We pulled one back after good build-up play, but I did think the referee was spoiling the game by continually getting his book out. We were putting a lot of pressure on the home backline heading into four minutes of stoppage time and we won a corner which wasn’t clear.

Before we knew it, the Canvey goalkeeper was lying in the back of the net and, although the linesman’s flag seemed to go up, the referee awarded the goal and it was role reversal as we benefitted from the late goal for a well-earned point.

One thing that really struck me on Tuesday night was how the side are now playing as a

unit against all the odds. Bearing in mind the enforced changes this season, it is amazing how the team is coming together now.

It was a hard, physical game in midweek, but I thought our players were fair and not dangerous - it was a great determination to win the ball.

Keith now has a great base to work on as we start picking up points against higher-placed teams, so I will forecast that if we can continue to show what we did on Tuesday then we can pull ourselves out of trouble.

I really think we will have a firm foundation to build on and that success will be in our own hands - we shouldn’t be relying on others around us dropping points.

I’ve been working on new proposals received from our landlords this week, due to certain cirumstances changing considerably from what we had been working from.

It has been proven that for a club that has enjoyed our recent successes, it is essential to make operational changes if the club

is to compete with the bigger boys of our division.

We know, and accept, that we’re small fish in a big pond, but that doesn’t mean we cannot compete with the best of them.

I think the days are gone when you can totally rely on a few volunteers around the ground on a matchday - sentiment has to go and the club has to be run ike a business, or else we will fail.

We are all working to ensure that the club can be run successfully as a business, but believe me when I say it will not happen overnight.

However, we will ensure change because we want to succeed and require such financial stability to do so.

Now let’s cheer our teams on and, hopefully once again, the boys put more points on the table.

LEISTON“It’s been a turbulent few weeks at Victory Road with Steve Pitt departing after merely

six weeks in charge of the Blues”

The big games keep coming thick and fast for Keith McMahon’s men as they look to continue their recent good form during the visit of Leiston this afternoon.

The Mead are now unbeaten in five Ryman Premier League games and welcome a Blues side who sit just above them in the league table, four points above the relegation zone.

It’s been a turbulent few weeks for the Victory Road club, with manager Steve Pitt (pictured) departing after his short spell in charge (only taking over himself in October), and his assistant Steve Ball taking the reigns instead.

Steve had been at the club in a previous spell before departing to take up a coaching role at Colchester

United’s academy, and the former U’s player admitted that he hadn’t envisaged a return to Victory Road.

Ball, who has penned a two-and-a-half year contract with the Blues, told the club’s official site: “It’s been a turbulent few seasons at Leiston and I must admit when I left 18 months ago to go to the Colchester United academy I didn’t expect to return.

“It’s an exciting challenge though and one we’re all very much looking forward to.”

The Blues smashed Enfield 6-1 last weekend to halt a run of four league games without victory, whilst they also bowed out of the League Cup in midweek on penalties having drawn 2-2 with AFC Sudbury.

Leiston FC were first affiliated with the Suffolk County FA in 1880, undoubtedly this club was closely associated with the Richard Garrett Engineering Works at that time, and in the 1980’s received the “Illuminated Address” from the Football Association, to celebrate the club’s centenary.

Over the years, Leiston FC has been blessed with many able and willing Chairmen, Secretaries and committee members and the club has proud itself on its family attitudes. Leiston FC has also been very fortunate over the years to have players of note in their ranks and include many links with Ipswich Town including Ted Phillips and Jackie Warne who both played for Ipswich Town.

In the early days, games were played on the old Recreation Ground adjacent to Gas Hill (now known as Park Hill), players would change at either the White Horse Hotel or at the Works Hall. The home ground was changed to the LWAA (Leiston Works Athletic Association) when Garretts’ bought the ground in Victory Road in the early 1920’s and has remained the home ground for Leiston FC to this day. The ground name was changed in the 1980’s to LTAA (Leiston Town Athletic Association).

During the Second World War the King’s Regiment was stationed at Leiston, which included most of the players of Liverpool FC and they played some of their matches on the LTAA ground.

Leiston FC were “full members” of the Football Association from the early 1950’s until approximately 1982 (the only other Suffolk teams to be full

members at that time were Ipswich Town and Lowestoft Town). During this period Leiston were accepted and played in the FA Cup, FA Amateur Cup and later the FA Vase. Leiston FC Youth team was the first club in Suffolk to enter the FA Youth Challenge Cup, playing Arsenal FC Youths at Highbury in 1954.

The club spent many years in the Suffolk & Ipswich League and only narrowly avoided a drop to Division Two in the late 1980’s. Slowly the club climbed its way back and after narrowly missing out on the Senior Division title in 1986 they achieved their long term goal of progression to the Eastern Counties set up in 2001 finishing third and the necessary promotion placing. Despite their prestigious history, Leiston FC has not had the best of fortune with regards to silverware until recently.

Six times they have been losing finalists in the Suffolk Senior Cup (1892, 1897, 1904, 1949, 1966 and 1986) and have also been losing finalists in three Suffolk Premier Cup Finals at Portman Road 2006, 2007 & 2008. However, in the Suffolk Junior Cup fortunes have faired more favourably. Four finals and three wins, in 1895, 1983 and 1984, with 1984 also seeing the club lift the SIL Division One trophy as well. More recently, and in their first Jewson League season, Leiston lifted the Division One trophy in 2002. The club also lifted the prestigious East Anglian Cup after a penalty shoot out over Brentwood Town in May 2008 and of course, the club achieved back to back titles winning the Ridgeons Premier Division in 2011 and the Ryman League Division One North in 2012. Efforts on and off the field in the past two seasons has also seen the club win prestigious

awards for Respect and Fair Play from the Ryman League and the club is extremely proud to collect such achievements.

Season 2008/2009 will be long remembered in the history of Leiston FC as we became only one of three sides to reach the First Round proper of the FA Cup in its history after starting in the Extra Preliminary Round. Memorable wins at higher ranked Carshalton Athletic and Conference Premier Lewes in a run that lasted nine games and ended in a replay defeat at Conference North Fleetwood Town in front of 2000 fans after 1250 had watched the First Round goal less draw at Victory Road. In our tenth season in the Eastern Counties League we gained promotion to the Ryman League after receiving the required Grade E Grading from the FA. The inaugural Ryman League provided unexpected success at the first attempt, securing the title with some fantastic performances including a 26 game unbeaten run. Further ground improvements have brought a Grade C Grading from the FA as the club has enjoyed a first ever season at step three in the Ryman Premier Division finishing in a very creditable twelfth place .

Currently Leiston FC has some of the best Non League facilities in Suffolk and comments are often made about these excellent facilities.

The efforts of Chairman Andy Crisp and Vice Chairman Peter Mayhew have been the main factor behind the changes and the meteoric rise of the club. The recent appointment of Steve Ball bolsters further development within the club and continuation of development at Victory Road is envisaged.

THE TREATMENT ROOM:

BEHIND THEGREEN DOOR“Credit where credit is due though as they dug in & put in an excellent second half display of the Mead we know & love!”

THE PHYSIO

So another week passes and the story continues, with last week’s game at Lewes seeing the side look super - we were always a threat and the shape of the side was excellent.

Having been 1-0 up for the majority of the game and looking good for all three points, a last-gasp equalise sees the home side nick a draw.

Despite all that, even with the goal coming late on, it was still a point gained for the side as we headed into anothe away trip in midweek.

The first half at Canvey Island on

Tuesday night was as bad as bad could be if we’re being honest, and to say the gaffer wasn’t happy at being 2-0 down at the break was an understatement!

At half-time the chat was pretty much, “You’re better than this, so go and sort it out.”

All credit to the boys though, as they dug in and put in an excellent second half display that was of the Mead that we all know and love!

This time it was for us to bag the ninetieth minute goal in order to seal a draw, so credit where credit is due and a massive well done to the boys!

The Green Room also has one less person in it, as guess who was on the bench on Tuesday night?!

Yes, Ashley Probets is finally back from his long-standing injury, and it really is great to have him back in and around the side again.

Ross is having an operation to clear his knee out and Adem Ramadan picked up a small knock to his knee for the U18s - so it’s just bumps and bruises.

We go again today - let’s stay positive and believe in what we’re doing.

Last Saturday’s FA Trophy programme threw up a good few shocks but also raised even more questions after some worryingly low attendances.

Boston United adorned our Non-League Paper front page after a great 2-1 win at Southport while Bradford Park Avenue stunned Kidderminster and Coalville Town grabbed a replay against Grimsby among others.

But the biggest takeaway from the competition’s first round has to be the gates, or lack thereof.

Hyde were, maybe not surprisingly, knocked out by North Ferriby but just 256 watched on – less than half of their 598 Skrill Premier average.

Alfreton lost to Nuneaton for the second time in a week with just 343 at the Impact Arena, again less than half than their league average.

There were also low turnouts at Gateshead, Dartford and Braintree which somewhat marred the day following some great results.

This is, after all, Non-Leagues premier cup competition but the attitude towards it has always been questioned.

Moving the final to March was a move

from the FA to get clubs to take it more seriously but it’s clear to see that it hasn’t worked, at least for the fans on the terraces.

Would reducing admission prices really make much of a difference? I’m sure clubs would tell you it’s difficult enough as it is financially at the moment, and why should they have to for Non-League’s top trophy?

If you ask Wrexham or York fans, the winners from the past two seasons, they’ll tell you the Trophy is the stuff of dreams, and it can be. It’s just a shame more aren’t aware, or at least enticed by the prize.

It’s not fair just to pick on the Trophy, though. Low attendances seem to be an indictment of this country’s general views on cup competitions.

Even the FA Cup suffers. After round three, all we have to look forward to is watching Man United’s reserves on TV – hardly something to get the pulses racing.

And then you have the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy and Capital One Cup – both merely allow Football League clubs to give their academy kids a run out.

It’s maybe ironic that the only FA cup competition that seems to have survived the changes in attitude is the FA Vase.

Attendances are normally very impressive for Steps 5 and 6. Clubs do everything they can to win, not only to boost their coffers but to also extend that Wembley dream.

There have been rumours lately of including Step 4 teams in the Vase rather than the Trophy, a move which I personally do not agree with.

The Vase has a certain charm and adding Step 4 sides would only help to dilute that. Yes, the Northern League have dominated in recent years but Tunbridge Wells made it all the way to the final last year and their players aren’t paid a penny.

The Trophy can elicit the same joys as the Vase – watching your team play at Wembley, as I personally know, is one of those moments everybody should experience in their lifetime.

It’s just a shame more don’t seem interested in chasing it.

THE FUTURE MEAD:

THE MEAD U13s

It’s been a while since the last article on how the Thamesmead Town U13s are getting on in their first season in the Kent Youth League, so here’s an update! Over the close season we saw some changes to our squad and it’s been good to see the boys gelling well and playing some really good, attractive football, which has culminated in a great start to the season for us.

We’re sitting high in our league and unbeaten in four league matches to date, with three wins, including a really good away win against title rivals Whyteleaf, and one draw. Whilst Whyteleaf currently top the table having played far more games, our arch rivals Welling also remain unbeaten - winning all four of their league matches to date. Our scheduled match with Welling earlier in November was cancelled due to cup commitments, but it really is shaping up as a title decider! We’re doing well in the various cup competitions too and, despite having gone out of the Kent Cup a fortnight ago to a very strong Vinters side, we’ve progressed into the latter stages of the Viatex Challenge Cup where we face Kennington in the next round. You may have seen a few of our boys

in their club kits supporting the first team’s bottom of the table clash at home against Carshalton recently, and as a team, we continue to support the club as much as we can.

Why not reciprocate and come and watch the boys on a Sunday over on the park pitches behind the main pitch and see what the future of the first team looks like? All of our results and fixtures are available on the Kent Youth league website at kentyouthleague.co.uk so why not take the time to keep up to date with our, and all of the other youth section teams’ progress? Finally, and as we’ve said before, there is a huge amount of work and cost associated with putting a team out every week and as such we again wanted to put on record our thanks to the U13s management team, Thamesmead Town FC, Sporting Club Thamesmead and our brilliant sponsors, Jhas Restaurant (Mayplace Road East, Barnehurst), Jhas Catering Service (Plumstead High Street) and PJM trading for their ongoing and invaluable support. Now let’s concentrate on getting behind the senior boys today as they continue their fight for survival - c’mon the Mead!

So far it has been a productive campaign for Thamesmead’s U13s side competing in the Kent Youth League, and Paul Turner brings us the latest from the future stars who are riding high in their division

And so after 820 games played by 203 countries and 5,715 players scoring 2,303 goals with 2,916 yellow and 100 red cards shown, the draw has been made and its now just a matter of time - or should that be 186 days - until the 20th FIFA World Cup Finals will begin and Brazil 2014 will be upon us.

And so now we all know where, when

and what impossible timings England will attempt to win the World Cup for a second time, as the competition returns to Brazil.

So we’ve now got just about six months to convince ourselves that Roy Hodgson will return from his summer holiday next June / July as either a footballing god, or top of the most wanted listings as public enemy number one; six months to convince

ourselves that we are good enough to win the whole competition and six months of debate as to who’s actually going to get on the plane!

And, of course, there’s also the planning of who’s going to host the all important barbeques as we wait for kick off! Its the first Finals to be held in South America since the Argentina Finals of

THE BOYS AREHEADING TO

BRAZIL 2014It was the 2014 World Cup draw this

week, and Mike GreeN discusses next summer’s event in today’s big feature.

THE BIG FEATURE

1978 and the first to be held on the American continent since the USA in 1994 - you remember, the one where Diana Ross missed the “penalty” in the opening ceremony.

That penalty miss set the tone really if you remember, as the Italian superstars missed a couple of penalties to lose the final to Brazil. Whilst on the field, the Brazilians are almost everyone’s “second team” and at near enough every World Cup, after the England games, its the fixtures of the Samba Boys that I certainly look for next, and I’m pretty sure that that’s the case for a lot of people reading this this afternoon. At the time when the event was awarded to Brazil, there were the usual concerns raised that things weren’t going to be ready in time; the country

couldn’t afford it; and it was a poor

decision.

Yet whilst away from football there does seem

to be many many social problems within the country, it does seem that the general population who are going to be priced out of going to a lot of the games.

Yet again we have to ask if FIFA will have dropped the ball in their pricing policy?

We all know that the same comments have been made for all major tournaments for a generation - heck we even had it at London 2012 - but the truth of the matter this time is that off the pitch where the general populas of Brazil will have the final say.

The country is in trouble and to me that was summed up in a tweet that the Daily Telegraph’s chief football

writer Henry Winter sent upon his arrival in Brazil on Thursday.

Henry said: “Arrived in the luxury resort of Costa do Sauipe. Beautiful place but it’s sleek, secure FIFA-land, far removed from real Brazilian life.” The whole build up so far has seemingly been dogged with controversy and problems.

Whilst last summers Federation Cup was played in fantastic stadiums with arguably the most famous of all - the Maracana - looking absolutely wonderful, there are no complaints or doubt that there are problems in the organisation.

The tragic events in Sao Paolo when two workmen were tragically killed when a crane collapsed destroying part of the newly built Arena Corinthians stadium along with the news that three of the stadiums now wont be ready until February/March

“WHILST THERE SEEMS TO BE MANY SOCIAL PROBLEMS IN

BRAZIL, IT ALSO SEEMS AS THOUGH

THE GENERAL PUBLIC WILL BE

PRICED OUT”

THE BIG FEATURE

are the “headline” problem, but its nothing new when Brazil and the World Cup are concerned. It is of course the second time that the country has hosted the event, with the first being in 1950 - and the organisational problems there were just as problematical, and if truthful by todays standards they seem almost funny! Only 16 teams “officially” qualified, but of those 16, three didn’t turn up!

It was the first World Cup that all the home nations applied for, and it was deemed by FIFA that the old Home International Championships (remember them?) would act as a qualifying group with the top two heading for Brazil!

The chairman of the Scottish FA said that they would only go to the tournament if the won the Championships - and the Scots came second behind England and so didn’t go!

It was even worse in South America where Ecuador and Peru withdrew after the qualification draw, and

because Argentina then fell out with Brazil and in turn withdrew themselves, no qualification comp was necessary! So at the draw 15 teams were spilt into four groups, but the organisers problems had only just begun.

The French withdrew citing travelling distances in their group as the reason whilst the Indians (yes India had qualified) officially citing costs, although the real reason was later admitted to be that it was because FIFA had instructed the Indian FA that the players would have to wear boots in the Finals after qualifying bare foot! And so the first World Cup after World War Two was held with thirteen teams, and is still famous as the only competition where there wasn’t actually a designated Final as the trophy was decided on a final group of four teams - eventual winners Uruguay, hosts Brazil, Sweden and Spain.

As luck would have it, Uruguay played the hosts in the last game of the group and a crowd of 199,954 crammed into the Maracana expecting a Brazil win.

The majority went home unhappy though as Uruguay came from behind to win 2-1.

Brazil 1950 was the first World Cup that England qualified for and

its infamous in English football history as the

competition when in Belo Horizonte, a single goal from Joe Gaetjens was good enough to

seal a 1-0 win for the for the USA to

beat an England team that happened to include

Billy Wright, Tom Finney, Stan Mortensen and a certain Alf Ramsey at full back.

Wouldnt happen today, would it? We hope we’ve whet your appetite for the competition ahead - next time, we’ll look at the venues and some of those stadiums that are causing so many problems.

“IT’S THE SECOND TIME

THAT THE COUNTRY HAS HOSTED THE

WORLD EVENT & IT WAS JUST AS PROBLEMATIC THEN TOO!”

RYMAN LEAGUE ROUND-UP

LEAGUE ROUND-UP:

RYMAN REVIEW

Cray Wanderers, Heybridge Swifts and Whitstable Town have been unveiled as the latest Macron Performance of the Month Award winners.

The trio were named on Tuesday as November’s winners of the competition to recognise and reward the top monthly performances in all three of the Ryman League’s divisions. Each club is now looking forward to being presented with a glass trophy marking their achievement at an upcoming fixture.

Judges from sponsors Macron and the Ryman League made their choices after considering a shortlist of potential clashes before casting their vote based on the result, form and the circumstances behind the winning performances.

After a tough start to the campaign and a change of management, Cray Wanderers can celebrate taking the Ryman Premier’s accolade for their 2-0 win at high-flying Lowestoft Town’s Crown Meadow.

Under new manager Keith Bird, the Wands secured their first away success of the campaign on Saturday 9 November when they beat a Trawlerboys side who’d only lost once

at home in the league all season.

The players and management at Ryman South Whitstable Town already had plenty to celebrate this week after reaching the FA Trophy’s Second Round and will collect their first performance award of the campaign for their 3-1 victory at home to Corinthian Casuals on Saturday November 23. In the crucial encounter at the wrong end of the table, Nicky Southall’s side earned three points to pull away from trouble.

Heybridge Swifts saw their manager Mark Hawkes (pictured) depart for

Conference South Chelmsford City last week and he leaves them with another fond memory and trophy after they took the Ryman North’s laurels for a series top class performances.

It is clearer why the Clarets opted to hand their managerial reins to Hawkes as any one of the impressive wins that made the judges’ shortlist could have won. They included a 5-0 away win at Brentwood, a 7-2 home triumph over Wroxham, a 7-0 demolition of Erith & Belvedere and crucially in terms of points for the second in the table Swifts, a 2-1 away win at leaders VCD Athletic on Saturday 16 November.

COMMERCIALCORNER

Good afternoon everyone as we welcome the players, officials and supporters of Leiston to Sporting Club Thamesmead for this weekend’s latest fix of Ryman Premier League football, as Keith and the boys try to extend the unbeaten league run to six games. In our last home game against Hampton, we carried in these pages a feature on Andy Weekes and the U21s and, following this, we’ve now we’ve had a request from Andy for anyone who would be willing to help him out at home games - for full details, please contact Andy directly at [email protected]. Hopefully this afternoon, for the first time this season, we’ll have ball boys as the club’s U13s (whose season you can read all about on page 16) do the honours. A big welcome to Keith Medlen and his boys - we hope you enjoy your afternoon with us!

Do you own a local company or are you associated with one and would like to become part of our family here at the SCT? We can offer you and your friends a great afternoon out! Interested? Simply get in touch with me on a matchday or via the contact details listed elsewhere on the page. Another big thank you to the Cooper family for their ongoing sponsorship of the home Man of the Match award - the winner from our last home game against Hampton & Richmond Borough is Sean Roberts! Sean received his prize in the Mead Lounge after the game, but who will get it this evening? Why not stay and see the presentation in the Mead Lounge around 5:15pm?! Finally from me this afternoon, don’t forget our final Ryman Premier League game before Christmas is next Saturday here at the SCT, when Leiston’s East Anglia neighbours from Lowestoft are our visitors for a 3pm kick off.

Hope to see you all again next weekend!

Cheers,Greenie

NEXT AT THE SCT:

LOWESTOFTIt’s back-to-back home league games for the Mead at the moment, as Keith McMahon’s side return to action at Sporting Club Thamesmead again next weekend for the visit of high-flying Lowestoft Town.

Lowestoft, who put five goals past the Mead in their first away fixture at Ryman Premier League level, have continued the season in such vein and find themselves in seventh position as we approach the half way mark, just three points outside of the play-off places.

Whilst Keith’s side will be looking to revenge the Trawler Boys for that early-season defeat, Micky Chapman’s men will be hoping to go one better than last season when they finished in second place in their bid for promotion.

This afternoon’s visitors, Leiston, dispatched the Trawler Boys 4-1 in the League Cup a fortnight ago, whilst they were held to a goalless draw last

weekend away to the Met Police.

However, with five wins from six in the lead up to those games, form seems to have been hitting the Suffolk side and defender Sam Gaughran insists Town will be up there come the end of the season.

“We’ve got too good of a squad not to be up there,” he explained. “We just

need to go on a run and we know if we do that we will be right up there.

“We just need to make sure we get the mentality right for every single game and treat every game like it’s a cup final.

“The consistency will come. We’ve got to start picking up points against the teams below us and not just turn up for the big games.”
