FROM THE EDITOR...Welcome back to Sporting Club Thamesmead for the second time in the space of a few days, as we welcome Hampton & Richmond Borough for this evening’s fixture.

After the frustration of not being able to add an extra two points to the season’s tally on Saturday in the 1-1 draw with Carshalton, Keith and the boys welcome Hampton this evening as they immediately look to pick up another vital victory.

The Beavers picked up an impressive win away at Billericay on Saturday though, so it certainly won’t be an easy test for the Mead.

Two away games follow tonight, with a trip to Lewes on Saturday before visiting Canvey Island next Tuesday night, and the Mead are then back here next weekend as we take on Leiston in another big game at the bottom.

FROM THE CHAIRMAN:

TERRYHILL

Good afternoon everyone and, firstly, let me welcome the players and officials of Hampton & Richmond Borough to our new home here at Sporting Club Thamesmead.

After a good start to the season, the Beavers now find themselves just below half way after losing 2-1 last week to Canvey Island, although they did enjoy a good run in the FA Trophy.

On Saturday they travelled to Billericay and came away with a 2-1 win, scoring in the last minute to help relieve some of the pressure that might have been building.

We ourselves drew 1-1 with Carshalton Athletic. After a poor first half from us we conceded a goal shortly before the break.

The Carshalton player made a run down the left, only to watch on as his intended cross flew straight into the top far corner of the net, unfortunately leaving Buddy with no chance.

Into the second half and we pressed the ball much better, meaning that Carshalton hardly got out of their own half.

Keith put Theo Fairweather-Johnson on and he made an impact

immediately.

We got our rewards after seventy minutes, when Carshalton gave away free kick just on the edge of their penalty area.

A good set-piece strike from Jordan Hibbert was only parried by the keeper and Junior Baker was on hand to finish and level the game at one-apiece.

However, sour scenes followed this as players came together after what was allegedly a spitting incident from one of the Carshalton players towards Theo.

The incident had incensed Tyrus Gordon-Young which then resulted in

Tyrus pushing the player in question onto the ground.

There is no place in football for spitting, in this instance, towards someone’s face. Unfortunately for us, we found out after the game that Tyrus had received a straight red card, so he will now miss three games and will be badly missed by the side.

In the end, the game finished 1-1 which I think was a fair result, and now we look forward to tonight’s game and another chance for three vital points.

Enjoy the game,Terry

“Sour scenes followed our equalising goal, but there is no place in football for spitting

FROM THE DUGOUT:

KEITHMcMAHON“The point kept us in touch & I would have taken four points from six if you had offered

it to me before the games”

Good afternoon and welcome back for today’s game against Hampton & Richmond Borough, and welcome to the management and players - I hope you enjoy your short stay here and I hope you have a safe journey home afterwards.

We’re here again after a home game on Saturday, where we gained another valuable point against Carshalton. On reflection, we could have taken all three points on our second half display, but the first half wasn’t up to standard.

We were confident on building on the Harrow result, and perhaps we suffered from a little overconfidence. We were lacklustre in the first half and struggled to get the ball near Mikel Suarez.

Carshalton put us on the back foot, but they didn’t create much so I thought if we could pick up the pace then we could go on and win the game. But they went 1-0 up before half-time due to a fluke cross - it was a freak goal and there was nothing Rob Budd could do.

Rob has been first class over the last month and I wouldn’t change him for anyone - I think he is the best goalkeeper in the league. I’ve had a number of goalkeepers calling me up and asking to come down, but I’ve told them all I’m happy with Buddy.

I gave the lads a bit of a going over at

half-time to pick up the tempo, and they responded really well. We went onto the front foot and got bodies forward straight from the kick-off and Mikel looked a threat, but we missed a few chances.

I believed we would win, and we deservedly got back on level terms when Danny Phillips tapped home Jordan Hibbert’s parried set-piece.

After the goal there was a nasty incident when their captain spat in the face of Theo Fairweather-Johnson before the game restarted. The linesman saw something but the referee didn’t, and it sparked a reaction.

We had some very good chances afterwards, but we couldn’t score! Junior Baker watched his shot cleared off the line, and Mikel also had a good chance.

The game finished 1-1 and there was another incident of their captain spitting at Theo. This time, Tyrus Gordon-Young saw it and got involved - it was handbags but the referee said he would caution him for pushing their player.

After the game I learnt he had sent him off though, which I found disappointing. I told the players their second half reaction was better and we would have won the game if we had started that way.

The point keeps us in touch and I’d have

taken four from the last six if it had been offered to me. It has given us a platform to build from and tonight’s game is another chance to progress.

Hampton & Richmond are a good side, though. I went to watch them last month and they impressed me, so it certainly won’t be an easy game this evening - but we will be doing all we can to pick up more vital points.

Onto sad news, and we have a few players leaving us. Mikel Suarez returns to Tonbridge after his loan has ended, and I’d like to thank him as he was excellent for us - sometimes loans don’t work out, but this one certainly did.

The saddest news though is Jack Hopkins departing. Hoppo has been with me for a long time, coming through the youth ranks with us. He has joined his cousin at East Thurrock and, although I don’t think it’s a great move, Jack is a top bloke and I respect his decision.

I now have the job of replacing them both - but don’t worry as, if anyone knows me, I’ll have that covered before long!

We still have a strong squad and I’m sure we’ll stick together and get some points tonight.

Enjoy the game,The Gaffer

FROM THE BOARDROOM:

PAULBOWDEN-BROWN“I know we will succeed but, yes, it will be

difficult - we’re trying to compete with much larger clubs than us on the field”

THE BOARDROOM

May I welcome the directors, officials, players and supporters of Hampton & Richmond Borough to the SCT and a safe journey home after an enjoyable game and refreshments.

Following Saturday’s hard-earned 1-1 draw against Carshalton, where the whole squad showed its composure and determination, a number of our loan players ave returned to their own clubs.

Keith will either replace them if required or bring in other players of the squad, but whatever action he chooses, be assured that everyone within the club is supporting Keith, his management team and the players to come through this difficult problem.

One of the problems we’re suffering from as a club, is the swift rise through the leagues we have enjoyed. Of course, I’m not saying we didn’t want to join the elite clubs in this league, but for a small club like us promotion also brings its own problems.

Let’s just say the football committee weren’t really prepared for the incredible feat achieved last season by Keith and the squad!

Although we’re trying to compete against much larger clubs on the field

with more support than we can dream of, we will ensure there are sufficient funds to compete professionally.

I know we’ll succeed and, yes, it will be difficult. Another reason it is difficult is because, as soon as Keith gets a settled squad who are working hard together, you become fodder for other clubs to come in through the seven days rule and unsettle your players.

Sometimes their heads are filled by managers who can offer to remove the pressure of a relegation fight - it is not always about increased pay.

That’s another problem for Keith to deal with though - who’d be a manager?!

We’re also out in the business and residential community, shouting from

the rooftops that Thamesmead Town has a successful football club with one of the best young managers. We need the community’s support, and we have a fantastic facility here for the use of all of the community, and local football clubs who can utilise the 4G pitches, too.

Our task off the field is to ensure that everything knows about us within the community, what is on offer and of the work Keith and his coaches carry out by giving their time and skills free of charge.

Now let’s sit down, enjoy a great evening of football and try not to let the cold weather bother us - because I’m sure it will be freezing!

HAMPTON & RB“Cup games mean the Beavers will have played fifteen games across October &

November - their league form stuttering”

Following a bright start to the season for this evening’s visitors to the SCT, the task of juggling multiple priorities has started to catch up with Hampton & Richmond Borough.

The Beavers, jointly managed by both Darren Powell and Paul Barry, have embarked on a couple of mini cup runs, reaching the FA Cup Fourh Qualifying Round before losing 3-1 to Gloucester City, as well as reaching the FA Trophy Third Qualifying Round, including a replay.

Those fixtures have meant that the side will have played fifteen games across October and November, and their league form has stuttered as a result, sliding down to fifteenth in the table albeit with games in hand on

those sides who surround them.

Saturday, however, saw the Beavers dispatch of Billericay in an impressive 2-1 away win, a late second of the game by hitman Charlie Moone bagging an all-important three points.

Tonight marks the end of a run of five successive away games in all competitons for the Beavers, and with three of the next four games back at the Beveree, they will be hoping for a small resurgence back into midtable.

For the Mead, however, Keith McMahon’s side will be hoping that another home game against a weary Beavers outfit will provide a perfect opportunity to pick up a vital three points in the ongoing quest for Ryman Premier League survival.

Hampton FC were formed in 1921 (changing their name to Hampton & Richmond FC in 1999).

The club are the only Senior Football Team in the London Borough of Richmond-upon-Thames, an area dominated by Rugby Clubs – of both codes. Hampton started life in Junior Football competing in the Kingston & District and the South West Middlesex Leagues until 1959.

During a purple patch in the early 1930s, Hampton won the KDFL Championship four years on the trot, though never managed better than second (twice) in the SWML. In 1959 Hampton acquired a lease on Beveree and made the move into Senior Football joining the Surrey Senior League for the 1959/60 season.

Hampton won the league in 1964 and were then elected to the Spartan League. Whilst members, Hampton won the Spartan league and Cup double three times, however in 1967 the club made probably their best ever signing when Alan Simpson (Hancocks Half Hour/Steptoe and Son) joined as Club President – a position he holds to this day. In 1967 the club installed floodlights.

Sometime during this period the club became known as The ‘Beavers’ – for reasons no one can now quite recall. In 1971 the Beavers joined the Athenian League but within two years had joined the Isthmian League on its expansion.

For the next twenty years or so Hampton made little impact on the Isthmian League but did however make appearances in Middlesex Senior Cup, Middlesex Charity Cup

and London Senior Cup Finals. By 1991the club had sunk to Division Three but then started a rise which ultimately led to the Isthmian Premier Division by 1998, and then Football Conference South by 2007. Several Managers along the way contributed to the club’s success. Chick Botley guided the club to its first foray into the Premier Division and several successes in the Middlesex Charity Cup.

Steve Cordery maintained the impetus, the club now being known as Hampton & Richmond Borough, including a first ever appearance in the F A Cup 1st Round proper (a 2-1 loss at Barnet). After a short blip, Alan Devonshire (ex-England & West Ham) took over in 2003 and guided the Beavers to the Isthmian League Championship at the end of the 2006/07 season, and with that success entry into Football Conference (South).

Under Devonshire’s eight year stewardship the club almost made it into the Football Conference Premier, twice losing at the Play-Off stage (to Eastbourne Borough and Hayes & Yeading). The Beavers also won the Middlesex Senior Cup for the first time. The Beavers, whilst still being regarded as a ‘village club’, surprised many pundits may making a sustained challenge against clubs with much greater resources. In 2008 the club made another appearance in the F A Cup 1st Round (lost 3-0 against Dagenham & Redbridge).

In order to accommodate the rise up the league2 Beveree has seen numerous improvements including several new stands (including The Simpson Stand) and has sufficient seats to accommodate any further promotion – although the Football

League would seem at the moment a step too far. The club recently negotiated a 40 year lease on Beveree so have secured their tenure for the forseeable future.

The Ground Record of 3,225, was set in a highly charged match against AFC Wimbledon at the end of the 2008/09 season. In 2011 Alan Devonshire left for pastures new and shortly after the club slipped back into the Ryman Premier Division. Season 2012/13 saw a struggle to avoid relegation into Division 1. 2013/14 has, however, opened with plenty of hope as a new management team of Paul Barry and Darren Powell (a former player, who went on to play for Brentford and Crystal Palace amongst others) together with a squad full of youthful ambition looks to rise back up the table.

Away from the First Team the club have a thriving Academy set-up which has already fed players into the first team and beyond. There also links to local Youth Teams, including Hampton Youth, as well as a Girls section.

In September 2003 the club became a limited company after 80+ years as a Members Club. There are currently plans in place to revamp the Club House by adding an additional floor in order to increase opportunities for private hirings in order ensure additional revenue streams so necessary to clubs such as ours.

Regardless of what may happen on or off the pitch and, at whatever levels the club may play at, Hampton & Richmond Borough FC – The Beavers - will always seek to remain a friendly, hospitable, family and community orientated club.

BILLERICAY TOWNBenjamin (34)

Saturday 23rd November 2013New Lodge

On a pitch that had only just passed an 11 am inspection and limited both team’s desire to play attractive football, the Beavers made light of being down to 10 men for most of the second half to snatch a deserved win, thanks to an 89th minute Charlie Moone winner, writes Rob Overfield. Hampton started the brighter and after a Joe Turner shot was sliced wide on 12 minutes, they took the lead in a simple fashion. Turner cut in from the left, and played a neat pass through the centre, splitting the defence in two; CHARLIE MOONE latched onto the pass and slid the shot under Lumley from about 12 yards.

After Tommy Brewer had to leave the field on 25 minutes following a rough challenge, the Beavers had to re-organise with Turner going to right back and Karle Carder fitting into the midfield.

This lessened the effectiveness of the team and Billericay took advantage of it on 35 minutes through former Beaver JOE BENJAMIN. A long pass caused a measure of confusion between the defence and Rodney Chiweshe, leaving Benjamin to take the loose ball and round Chiweshe to pass the ball into the net.

By this time the pitch was cutting up alarmingly and it was a credit to the teams to continue to try and play football. On 55 minutes, the game looked to have turned in the Blues favour as Tom Hickey was dismissed for a tackle that was deemed a little reckless by the referee; it being one of

those that could have been given a yellow on another day.

After this, the team reorganised once again and looked comfortable against a Blues team that looked unthreatening despite having a man advantage. The Beavers could have easily taken a lead just after the hour as a Thompson header (we think) was saved at the near post after a clever James Simmonds free kick into the area.

With 15 minutes to go, the Beavers reorganised a third time; Billy Jeffreys came on in place of Simmonds to play in an unfamiliar right back role, and Aite-Ouakrim slotted into an advanced midfield position, replacing Joe Turner as the team continued to appear the better and more positive.

Inside the last 10 minutes, both teams opened up. On 83 minutes, Charlie Moone picked up a good ball by Aite-Ouakrim and his shot was well saved; Moone gathered the rebound but the pass ran across the goal with no Beaver within reach.

Just 3 minutes were left as Bonet-Johnson’s powerful volley from the edge of the box for the Blues made Rodney Chiweshe stretch full length to push the ball wide for a corner.

From the corner, Justyn Roberts had to be alert as he got in the way of a goal bound header on the line, with Chiweshe stranded.

The additional time had been indicated when the Beavers generated an opening; a Lumley goal kick was headed straight back downfield by the Hampton midfield, with the Blues defence caught slightly off-guard, CHARLIE MOONE found a gap and took the ball onto his left foot and shot from a narrow angle.

Lumley had come out but the shot went underneath him and trickled into the net, just inside the far post.

There was still time for Billericay’s Glenn Poole to force a flying save from a now injured Chiweshe, but in the end, it wasn’t enough to deny the Beavers the win.

FEATURE INTERVIEW

THE FEATURE INTERVIEW:

ONE-ON-ONE WITHKEITH McMAHON

Mead boss Keith McMahon insisted after Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Carshalton that he remained confident the side would find their way out of trouble come the season’s end.

Speaking to Stephen McCartney of KentishFootball.co.uk, McMahon reaffirmed his believe that the Mead have started to find their feet having picked up four points from the previous two league games.

“We’re starting to pick points up now,” he explained. “Three points today [against Carshalton] would have taken us closer to Enfield, but we have another home game on Tuesday.

“We’re starting to turn the corner now with a settled side - we just need to get a few results and I think that we’ll be fine.”

The Mead have faced a testing

opening to the campaign by playing all of the top sides early on, but as the season begins to approach the half way mark, they are starting to have played most of the division.

Having seen all of the opposition and his side’s competition in the fight for survival, McMahon stated that recent results show that the Mead should be fine when playing those sides in and around them.

“There’s five or six teams that are only six points ahead, which isn’t much at this level,” he suggested. “We’ve played the top twelve sides already, but now we’re starting to play a few sides around us and we’re getting points, so that’s all we’ve got to look at.

“We’re nowhere near the worst side in this league and we’ve shown how well we can play against Bognor Regis,

AFC Hornchurch and Harrow Borough. We’ve

just got to keep our heads afloat and keep in contact.

“But we’re pretty confident that we’ll get out of it.”

The Mead will go into forthcoming matches without the services of front-man Tyrus Gordon-Young after the striker was dismissed on Saturday. Gordon-Young got involved in a fracas at the end of the game, but McMahon suggested the passion was something the Mead need.

“He might have overreacted, but there was nothing to it and no punches thrown,” McMahon reflected.

“If I’m honest, we need that passion at the moment. There was no ill-discipline and he’s showing the passion that he cares - if that’s what it takes to spark us, then we’ll take anything.”

“WE’VE SHOWN HOW WELL WE

CAN PLAY & WE’VE STARTED PICKING

UP POINTS - I THINK WE’VE TURNED THE

CORNER & WE’LL GET OUT OF IT”

No football to watch on a Saturday afternoon because your game has been called off? How boar-ing!

The weird and wonderful world of Non-League often throws up stories that you’re not likely to see anywhere else.

While there were plenty of games postponed last weekend due to the adverse weather conditions, there’s one club in Gloucestershire that might have problems for some time due to a pitch invasion – by wild boars!

Gloucester Northern Senior League side Soudley AFC are on the edge of the Forest of Dean and were given an almighty fright after discovering their pitch had been ruined by the animals.

The boars managed to break through fences surrounding the pitch to cause havoc and it’s the third time this has happened to Soudley – not a hat-trick they were hoping for.

The club’s home seems likely to be out of action for at least a few weeks which could cause some problems for their fixture schedule.

It’s also a bad timing as apparently Soudley were scheduled to debut a new formation for their fans on Saturday – the boar-boar-two!

It’s no joke for chairman Ian Marfell, however, who said: “It’s been regarded as one of the best pitches in the Forest of Dean over the past ten years so to see it churned up is a bit of a pain.”

While we had to suffer the inevitable postponements last Saturday, most of the fixture programme went ahead without a hitch, which isn’t bad going for November.

This time last year, snow was decimating Non-League like it has done for too long. The white stuff and rain are undoubtedly the biggest culprits.

But there have been plenty of other reasons for games being called off in Non-League, some more comedic than others.

Just a couple of months ago in the FA Cup, Huntingdon Town and Sleaford had their game abandoned with just three minutes left after a mass brawl between the two sides.

The game hit national headlines and saw both clubs kicked out of the world’s oldest cup competition.

On a lighter note, the recent Southern Counties East League game between Canterbury City and Whyteleafe was called off, despite the best efforts of the away side.

Both clubs had exactly the same kit, which was only discovered after the Leafe arrived at the ground, and even though the Surrey club dashed to get a new strip from nearby Margate, they missed the referee’s cut off time of 3.30.

And what about failed floodlights? Or maybe those that don’t get the chance to work! Crowborough Athletic were left in a spot of bother at the start of this season, due to overgrown trees!

Their home fixture against Shoreham was abandoned after floodlights failed an FA lux test due to the rebelling shrubbery.

“It’s all a bit embarrassing to be honest,” admitted chairman Tony Bowen. “We have a bit of a tree problem.” Wood you believe it!

THE BALL IS ROUND

For over a hundred years football programmes have been the vital accompaniment to any match.

Even the smallest, most insignificant game is normally commemorated by the issue of a matchday programme. I know some people who will not count that they have been to see a game unless they can get a programme or at least a team sheet.

They have also been in some instances a valuable commodity, with some programmes being sold at major auction houses around the world for more than £20,000, although ironically these days when programmes are mass produced glossy “brochures”, the programmes that fetch the highest bids on the likes of eBay are pirate programmes, often complete with spelling mistakes and miscredited photos.

When West Ham went on their last “European Tour” there was not a programme issued for the game in Palermo. There was an official press pack that of course found its way onto

eBay, but the greatest demand came from a fake programme issued in small numbers, and sold to arriving fans at Palermo airport complete with photos of Rio instead of Anton Ferdinand, and the recently departed Marlon Harwood instead of Carlton Cole. Oh, and of course the club were managed by Alan Mildew instead of Pardew.

Original editions of some games are still in great demand from collectors around the world, but has the day of the programme now passed? Modern technology and our leisure time activity means that programmes are out of date the second they are printed. In the days of modern squads there is no finese in what the clubs produce, simply listing the whole squad, rather than listing the potential starting XI normally given to the programme editor by the manager himself. So why do clubs still persist in producing them, and more importantly why do fans still buy them?

I still tend to buy a programme when I go to visit a new club. Take Wealdstone

for instance. I have nothing against them – it just happened to be one of the last programmes I bought when they played a pre-season game in late July against Dagenham & Redbridge. The club produced a 32 page programme covering their pre-season games against Dagenham and Watford later in the week for £2.

Value for money? Well not really. Take away 4 pages of adverts, 2 pages dedicated to the team line ups, 2 pages taken up by forthcoming season fixtures and you have 24 pages of content. Plenty there for everyone wouldn’t you say? Well, 9 1/2 pages were taken up to a review of the visitors Dagenham & Redbidge yet there wasn’t a single page devoted to Watford.

The rest was a mix of photos and articles that had also appeared on their website. So what value did any fans get out of the programme? 9 1/2 pages for the away team? When there was more Dagenham players than fans at the game? Wealdstone fans surely don’t want to have such detail about a team

they will more than likely never see play again.

Social media networks such as Twitter allow information to be shared as soon as it is released to all interested parties with ease. Wealdstone themselves use it to send out club news and update on games. Free software such as WordPress, Joumla and Drupal has enabled clubs to build websites that are attractive, feature rich and can be updated with ease. So is there a place for the match day programme as we know it?

Most clubs struggle to fill a 24 or a 32 page programme on a regular basis. There is a fine balance to be made in the lower leagues between making it profitable by selling advertising space or by filling it with well written and exclusive content that is fresh for the fans who buy it.

Fans no longer want to read interviews with players who claim their undying love for the club and its fans, or that their favourite meal is steak and chips. They want something new, or do they? Adverts are usually irrelevant to the club and are simply in there because the commercial manager managed to do a deal on selling the space. How often do you see an ad “Wishing the Club all the best for the forthcoming season”? Simply a space filler.

Carlisle United have taken a very bold step this year. They realise that most of their fans visit the website on a daily, if not a weekly basis. Some will also sign up to the club’s email newsletter sent once a week, and a few will follow the official and unofficial Twitter feeds and Facebook pages.

So instead of churning out a 48 page programme filled with old content and adverts for £3, they are producing a much smaller edition for £1. Less

content, but more relevant and interesting content. And the result? Virtually every edition has been sold out with a penetration rate of over 20% of match day attendees purchasing the programme.

Whenever and wherever England play an international you will find a small FREE magazine being given away outside the group called Free Lions. Written by the Football Supporters Federation it includes items such as location themed quizzes, information on the next away destination (or the current one), special offers for the fans and interesting content written by journalists and not the FA. But what is interesting content?

Why do clubs dedicate, as Wealdstone did, so much information on the away team? The away fans know everything there is to know about their team so its irrelevant to them, and do home fans really care about indept profiles about their opponents?

Take West Ham (no, please). Last season when they played Manchester

United they dedicated sections on Wayne Rooney and Sir Alex Ferguson – as if any fans who went to the game didn’t know about them.

Stats pages were always the most interesting part of the programme – but again the internet has changed that.

The emergence of OPTA has revolutionised the way us nerds watch and analyse football. Want to know the impact of making a substitution had on a game, well there are sites for that too such as the excellent Zonal Marking.

Away Travel section? How many fans would take one a programme with them when they travelled to a new away group? Compare that to those who simply type the postcode in their SatNav system to

get accurate information including the latest travel.

Do we really want to read the egotistic ramblings of the chairman or the manager who throws in every cliche in the book in their description of the 6-0 defeat last week? Pictures from the most recent games?

It is hard to make football pictures interesting at the best of time. Some of the best sports photographers I know, such as David Bauckham and James Boyes who specialises in non-league football, focus on the events around the pitch that bring life to the game.

So what is the future? Carlisle’s model is an interesting one and I will monitor it to see if it works. Certainly clubs need to invest in external content, looking at articles not just about their clubs, but about the world of football as a whole.

There are thousands of excellent websites out there that produce new content every day – all they need to do is ask.

RYMAN LEAGUE ROUND-UP

LEAGUE ROUND-UP:

RYMAN REVIEW

Kingstonian and AFC Hornchurch share the lead at the top of the Ryman Premier Division after the K’s earned all three points on Saturday and the Urchins drew in Kent at Maidstone United.

K’s faced top ten side Lewes at Kingsmeadow and fell behind to a Nathan Crabb goal after less than three minutes. Andre McCollin equalised from the spot on 26 minutes and then gave the home side the lead nine minutes after half-time.

The Rooks had Jay Lovett sent-off 12 minutes from time for a second bookable offence and the K`s took advantage to add two more to their tally, Ryan Moss on 88 minutes and then McCollin, who completed his hat-trick in injury-time.

In front of another terrific crowd of 1,879 at the Gallagher Stadium, Hornchurch’s Leigh Bremner struck two minutes after Maidstone United’s 10th minute opener from on-loan Tom Phipp to ensure the Urchins returned home with a share of the spoils.

Wealdstone are third after a 3-1 Grosvenor Vale win over ten-man Leiston. Veteran Scott McGleish gave the Stones a 27th minute lead that he doubled right on half-time. Tom Pett virtually made it game over when he notched the home side’s third just three minutes into the second half. That became even more certain a few minutes later when Stuart Boardley received two yellow cards within six minutes but the ten-men rallied to reduce the deficit through Craig Parker.

Erhun Oztumer struck a hat-trick as fifth-

placed Dulwich Hamlet made hard work of securing a 4-3 victory against struggling Enfield Town after a moment of madness saw Dean Lodge sent-off before half-time.

Otzumer made it 2-0 to Hamlet by the 33rd minute, but Town were boosted by Lodge’s dismissal in first half stoppage time. Liam Hope reduced the arrears nine minutes into the second half and then a great volley from Anton Olondo pulled Town level five minutes later. The home side’s Mark Kirby levelled the teams up when he was sent-off for deliberate handball and Otzumer completed his hat-trick from the resultant penalty. Xavier Vidal made it 4-2 in the 87th minute, although Tyler Campbell ensured a nervy end when he pulled a third back.

Lowestoft Town keep another clean sheet and put in a clinical performance to beat a hard working Margate side 3-0 at Crown Meadow. Jake Reed gave the Trawlerboys the boost of an early third minute lead than Manny Osei added to just before the break. Sam Gaughram made sure the points stayed in Suffolk with a third on 66 minutes.

Bognor Regis Town raced to victory again at Nyewood Lane with another convincing display against Bury Town. After a relatively tight and first half that saw Terry Dodd give the Rocks an 18th minute lead, six more goals, including Dodd completing his hat-trick, came in the final 45 minutes. Ben Johnson and Kane Wills were the other home scorers, with Billy Clark and Shane Tolley replying for the Blues.

Harrow Borough produced another fine performance to extend their unbeaten away

run in the league to six matches with a first-ever success at Canvey Island`s Park Lane at the eleventh time of asking. And they had to come back from being a 24th minute Moses Ademola goal down to win too.

Victor Osobu equalised a minute before the break and then gave Boro the lead 11 minutes into the second period. Steve Butterworth`s penalty a couple of minutes from time secured the points for Dave Anderson`s side.

Hampton & Richmond Borough survived Tom Hickey`s 57th minute dismissal to record a 2-1 success at New Lodge against Billericay Town. Charlie Moone was once more the Beavers ̀hero with a brace in the 15th and then 89th minutes after Joey Benjamin had equalised on 34 minutes.

And second-bottom Cray Wanderers also picked up a useful away point at Wingate & Finchley where this time the hosts left it even later to pull level. Jack Sherratt gave Cray the lead on the half-hour mark and it looked as though that was going to be enough. However, in the final minute of normal time, Ola Williams was brought down in the box and David Laird kept his cool to pull Wingate level from the spot.

Hendon and East Thurrock United also shared the spoils at Earlsmead in a 2-2 draw. Lee O`Leary gave the Greens the boost of a goal right on half-time, only for Jason Hallett to level five minutes after the break. David Bryant then put the Rocks ahead with 15 minutes remaining before veteran striker Jefferson Louis equalised seven minutes later.

THE FUTURE MEAD:

THE MEAD U21s

This is the first season of the Ryman U21s league, and it provides us with the opportunity to visit some old familiar places but it also throws up some opportunities to visit some new grounds and to make some new acquaintances.

With regards to the U21s squad, some players have followed me over from a previous club but I have also added a lot of new faces.

Some of the players have been fortunate enough to gain a taste of first team action already and this can only bode well for the future.

We started the season with a home game against Hastings, a game we ended up winning 3-2 thanks to goals from Harry Goldsmith, Tom Jewers and Ross Murphy.

Hastings finished the game stronger than us and two very good goals brought them back in to the game but we held on to start the season in a winning way.

Our first away game saw us visiting Three Bridges. This game was a bit of a rude awakening and perhaps we were not prepared for the physical side of the game – but the U21s lads are quick learners and although our defending

wasn’t the best, we gained some credibility with two late goals but the home side hung on to win 3-2.

Next up we hosted Maidstone, perhaps a lot of peoples early favourites following their blistering start to the season.

We went in at half time a goal to the good thanks to a Tom Jewers penalty,

but perhaps our only mistake of the game saw us finish all square at one all.

Next up was a visit to the seaside down at Whitstable Town – always a nice place to visit.

We didn’t take advantage of a very good pitch and the home side scored late on to take all three points – a bit harsh on us but we cannot complain

With the football calendar starting to approach the half way mark as we reach the festive period of the season, U21s manager, Andy

Weeks rounds up the season so far for the Mead’s U21s team

THE MEAD U21s

about a result when we don’t put the ball in the net!

The next visitors to Bayliss Avenue were Leatherhead. We played well and went ahead through Luqi Adesina.

The visitors equalised but we went ahead through a strike by Tom Carlse. Leatherhead scored late in added on added on time and although a good strike, I still don’t know where 9 minutes of added on time came from!

Our only cup action this season is in the London Senior Cup. Our first game was against Greenhouse, visitors from East London.

Goals from Harry Goldsmith and Fairweather-Johnson matched those by the away side over ninety minutes.

However, Jonny Murray scored the winning pen to put us through 6-5 on penalties.

Our next away game was down at Burgess Hill.

Again, this was decent surface but we never really looked a threat and the hosts won by the solitary goal.

A nice ground and, to their credit, their U21s and U18s sides are both doing very well this season.

We then had a second away game on the spin, down at Ramsgate.

Before the game we spoke about a few things, predominantly about togetherness both on and off the pitch.

Perhaps this struck a chord as we

played very well. Despite going behind early, the result was never in doubt and we ran out 2-1 winners thanks to goals from James Naylor and Ross Murphy.

Our first visit to Maidstone’s Gallagher stadium soon followed.

They have an artificial surface but, to be

honest, I think having our own artificial pitch to train on, we didn’t bat an eyelid.

We played very solidly on the night

and early goals from Bed Sadiku and Ross

Murphy saw us lead 2-1 at the break.

We added further goals from Tom Jewers and Harry Goldsmith saw us beat a much fancied side 4-1, a good result but also a very good defensive

performance.

Our most recent game was the visit of Margate. Again we played very well and were two goals up at half time.

We kept our first clean sheet of the season – probably more pleasing than the result and performance!

This is a very competitive league, but this is needed if players are to learn and progress.

It’s a good league and I have to say that anyone can beat anyone on their day.

I have high hopes for a number of the players in the squad, but it’s now over to them to gain the attention of the first team manager.

We have a very young U21s squad and this, combined with the level of ability in the academy, the U18s and the subsequent age groups, all bodes well for the future.

“I HAVE HIGH HOPES FOR

A NUMBER OF THE PLAYERS IN THE SQUAD - BUT IT’S OVER TO THEM

NOW TO GAIN THE ATTENTION OF

COMMERCIALCORNER

Good evening everyone as we bid a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Hampton & Richmond Borough to Sporting Club Thamesmead for tonight’s Ryman Premier League contest.

It seems incredible that it’s nearly six months since we first moved into the SCT, and in that time off the pitch, we’ve slowly found our feet. Now it’s time to actually focus on our matchday surroundings - we’ve a number of ideas so far on the board, but if you’ve any ideas, or indeed anything that you could possibly loan the club to display in the Mead Lounge, please see anyone in the committee room on a matchday or contact the commercial office. Christmas is now just around the corner, with only two more home games before Santa arrives. We’re hoping to get a merchandise team together, so do come and see us if you’ve got any ideas or requests for stock that we could bring together. If you’re looking for stocking fillers, we have club badges as well as 2014 Thamesmead Town diaries, and you can purchase these this evening if you go along to see Gareth in the Mead Lounge before kick-off - you know you want to!

Do you own a local company, or are you associated with one and would like to become part of our family here at the SCT? Simply get in touch with me on a matchday or by the contact details listed elsewhere on the page to see what’s available for you.

Another big thank you to the Cooper family for their ongoing sponsorship of the home Man of the Match award - Saturday’s winner Lewis Tozer received his prize after the game with Carshalton Athletic, but who will get it tonight? Why not stay and see the presentation in the Mead Lounge around 10pm?! WIth the first team now on their travels until December 7th, don’t forget the U21s are here at the SCT on Saturday at 3pm when they welcome Burgess Hill Town - so if you’re not heading to Lewes with the first time, Andy and the boys would welcome your support!

Cheers,Greenie

NEXT AT THE SCT:

LEISTONThe Mead return to action here at Sporting Club Thamesmead next weekend, as Keith McMahon’s men welcome Suffolk-based Leiston to south-east London.

It is another game in which the Mead will be targeting all three points, with the Blues currently teetering on the brink of the bottom four following a 3-1 defeat at title-chasing Wealdstone on Saturday.

The Blues started the season in promising fashion, notching three wins from four to keep in touch amongst the early pacesetters, but a run of seven defeats in nine Ryman Premier League matches saw them slide down the table.

The arrival of Steve Pitt as manager in October has seen the club halt their slide slightly in recent weeks, though, as the Suffolk club have picked up five points from their previous five games, but they will still be looking nervously over their shoulders as they head into the festive period.

Pitt’s arrival from Bishop’s Stortford, where he was number two to Rod Stringer, was greeted with pleasure by the Blues’ chairman, Andy Crisp.

“Steve is a well-respected manager and has enjoyed a fine season to date with Bishop’s Stortford,” he explained at the time.

“Steve has a wide network of contacts which will benefit the club as we look

to climb out of the relegation areas.”

Meanwhile, Blues veteran Blake Saker admitted that Pitt, alongside his assistant Steve Ball, are starting to find success in their methods at the club.

“Steve Pitt has come in along with Bally who we all know. They have a totally different approach to Danny Laws [former manager] and it’s starting to work for us.”
