KEITHMcMAHON

Good evening everyone and welcome back to Bayliss Avenue for tonight’s Ryman League Division One fixture against Great Wakering Rovers.

As always, I’d like to start by welcoming Dan Trenkel and his Great Wakering side to Sporting Club Thamesmead this evening, along with their supporters and officials - the old place has changed a bit since you were last here! We needed Saturday’s win as it’s been a tough few weeks for us both on and off the pitch.

We had a few choice words before the game about our defeat at Thurrock and the commitment that some of them had been showing in recent weeks - I just felt as though we had begun to slide down the wrong path.

It was the little things that aren’t what I’m about, and I think it was partly my fault as I wasn’t wanting to tread on anyone’s toes regarding the financial situation - perhaps I should have.

But on Saturday I came out with a

fighting, positive attitude and said to the lads that they had to show both the club and me more commitment than they had been doing - as well as the people next to them in the dressing room.

I told them to get out onto the pitch and battle, and it worked.

We weathered a ten minute storm, but afterwards our shape was tremendous - I think that the return of Derek Duncan made a huge difference to us.

If I’m being honest, he was probably my best player last year if I’m honest, and it’s no surprise that our best performance of the season also coincided with his return to the side from injury.

Derek, Simon Glover and Jack Hopkins were brilliant with their shape throughout and, going forward Tyrus

Gordon-Young didn’t stop running yet again, and both Leslie Thompson and Rob Carter proved a point.

At the other end, I thought Callum MacNaughton was superb with Richard Butler, and we had Vicente in goal making his debut.

We honestly could have won by six, seven or eight in the end and it wouldn’t have been an injustice. We really opened them up, missed a few chances and scored a couple of excellent goals too.

Hopefully, the confidence has returned now and the lads are brimming with it. We are a good side and I have stressed that to them.

We’ve been letting ourselves down for the past couple of weeks, let alone anyone else, and we needed to get back to the levels of performance that we displayed at the weekend - and we

04 THAMESMEAD TOWNv Great Wakering Rovers

THE MANAGER

Page 5: Thamesmead Town v Great Wakering Rovers

did that with some aplomb. Make no mistake about it, Soham aren’t a bad side at all. They’re big, strong and will cause problems to many teams, but we were all over them and dominated from the start to finish.

After the game, I thanked the lads for the last few weeks but also reiterated that we need performances like that in most games. Hopefully we can carry that on and kick on from there now, and that starts tonight.

I was especially pleased for the front three on Saturday as all of them scored - all good goals and all well-deserved.

Tyrus was involved in every single one and he’s really proving to be a realy lynchpin for us this year.

We will always prove to be a handful for sides when we’ve got people like our three up there who are big and pacy.

I know it’s easy to say, but we ought to have won every one of the games in the recent run of defeats - we just needed that little lift to get us back up and going again.

If we can keep playing as we did at the weekend then it will take a very good side to beat us. We need to keep taking it one game at a time and just get the side to gel again and restore that togetherness.

Saturday will have helped on that front and we’ll go again tonight. We’re only going to get better as the team settles down and, with a couple of players still to return, it bodes well.

Nobody is bigger than the club, and we showed that again on Saturday. There are some good youngsters coming through and the future looks bright.

We had to make a stand against a couple and we did that. Sometimes you have to take these things on and, sometimes, a step backwards can help you to move forwards.

I genuinely believe we’ve done that now and hopefully we can push on again. We won’t be getting carried away, but hopefully we can start tonight, then move onto Redbridge, and then onto Chatham.

Enjoy the game,Keith

PAULBOWDEN-BROWN

May I welcome the directors, officials and players of Great Wakering Rovers to our home, Sporting Club Thamesmead, for this evening’s game, and I hope after your short stay and some refreshments you all have a safe journey home.

Well, what is there to be said about our game on Saturday - particularly when you account for the turbulence of the past fortnight?

Each and every player gave it their all, and more. Although we can only nominate one player for the Man of the Match award, I personally would have given them all the accolade due to the display I saw.

The performance made me extremely proud to be a part of this great club, and it confirmed that my belief that we will survive is both correct and a worthwhile pursuit.

If the club is to continue its rise away from the financial blips of recent weeks to become a self-sufficient and stable club, we need everyone associated with the club on and off the field to show the type of belief that the players displayed Saturday.

Most clubs go through difficult times

on occasion throughout a season and, as I have said previously, you mustn’t hide away but you must deal with the problems head on. Yes, you may have to make hard and difficult decisions to rectify the problem, but if you don’t then it will become harder to control.

I have therefore asked everyone involved with assisting me on the sales and marketing side of this club to spend every spare minute to contact local businesses and the local community, explaining what the club achieves with football in the community.

I want them to explain the coaching within local schools, what we want to achieve in the future and try to get them on board - be that as a supporter or as a business partner.

I have personally spoken to a number of local people and asked the questions: have you used the new facilities within the SCT? Have you

been up to see a game? Have your children taken up the opportunity to join one of our junior sides?

Their initial replies scared me, to be quite honest. Firstly, they didn’t know they even had a local football club they could support. More importantly, they weren’t aware of this new development that is open to the community.

Most worrying, though, is that when they were asked if they would try to use the facilities or if their children would like to join one of our junior sides, the answer was generally: “No.”

So, there you have it. This explains why we tend to have the lowest gates in the Ryman League, and we therefore have a lot of work to do if we are to educate the business community and our neighbours within the local community to take a visit to the SCT and see just what is on offer to them here.

06 THAMESMEAD TOWNv Great Wakering Rovers

THE BOARDROOM

Page 7: Thamesmead Town v Great Wakering Rovers

It is equally as hard to try and educate the business community that they have a local football club on their doorstep that requires their support.

They will not approach us first and sending our pleading sponsorship letters doesn’t work either, as they will simply end up discarded in the bin.

We have to apply the personal touch and get out to meet people face to face.

In future, my instructions to you all will be that, if you want to sell the club, you need to be out there with face to face contact to the decision-makers in charge - anything else is a complete waste of both time and effort.

I can only hope that this new ethos will help us to learn from our previous misconceptions.

I believe that those misconceptions have previously resulted in a lethargic approach to selling the club, and that hasn’t helped anyone. It certainly hasn’t helped to portray the club in the best and most professional image, either.

Now, let’s enjoy another good game of football this evening - all being well, here’s hoping we can continue where we left off at the weekend with another fine display that makes us all proud of the club.

FAYC FRIDAYThe Mead’s U18s begin their FA Youth Cup campaign this Friday evening, September 25th, at Dartford’s Princes Park, where they take on Greenwich Borough.

The game kicks off at 7.30pm so, if you’ve got nothing else planned for the evening, then please make yourself welcome and give the boys a cheer - Paul Turner and the lads would love your support!

SOCIAL MEADYou can keep in touch with everything that’s going on at the SCT every day online. The club’s website has had a few technical problems this week, but should be back sorted by now at www.thamesmeadtownfc.com - whilst you can also follow the club if you’re on social networks, with the Twitter account @ThamesmeadTFC with live goal updates and all the latest news as it happens.

WELCOME VICENTE

With Rob Budd injured in the game at Thurrock seven days ago, you may have noticed a new man between the sticks at the weekend - we’d like to give a big Mead welcome to Vicente Mansanet.

Vicente also kept another clean sheet on his debut at the weekend which brings our Clean Sheet Cancer Challenge total up to four - here’s to many more clean sheets during Vicente’s time at the SCT!

SEASON TICKET HOLDER?On an evening where there is very little professional football being played, we’re hopeful that there might be a few extra fans here with us at the SCT this evening - if you are indeed one of those, and you have a season ticket with a professional club, we’d like to remind you that you can enjoy half price entry here!

That’s right - it’s our way of saying thank you for coming down and giving us your support. Simply show your season ticket on entry and we hope you have a great evening with us. We’ll see you again soon and, next time, you don’t fancy bringing some of your mates along too, do you?!

GREAT WAKERING

Great Wakering Rovers visit the SCT this evening hoping that a recent uplift in form can be continued.

Following their promotion from the Essex Senior League last season, Rovers lost their opening five games of the new season as they took time to adjust to the new level.

Despite an impressive 3-0 victory over Romford, it failed to kick start their campaign, with Dan Trenkel’s men then going on to lose another five successive games, leaving them rooted firmly to the bottom of the Ryman Division One North table.

However, Rovers head to the SCT this evening hoping that they have finally found their feet, with a 2-2 draw with Tilbury being followed up on Saturday with their second win of the campaign - a battling 3-2 victory over Barkingside.

And Trenkel will be pleased with the battling spirit shown in that victory. Having found themselves two goals up heading into the final ten minutes, goals from Dan Jones and Calvin Poku two minutes from time looked to have salvaged a point for the hosts and consigned Rovers to stretching their winless run further.

However, the late drama wasn’t finished there and Tom Strickland popped up in stoppage time with his second of the game to pick up a huge three points - a win that also lifted the side off the bottom of the table and to within one point of clawing out of the bottom three.

Momentum can certainly play a key role in football, and as Saturday’s game moved past the ninety minute mark, Trenkel will have been left wondering just what his side need to do to get going this year.

However, that late drama could prove to be the turning point in Rovers’ season.

CLUB HISTORYThe club was formed in 1919 by soldiers demobbed after World War I and finding employment in the local brickfields. Not much in memory remains of the early years of the club although the club do posess some wonderful pictures from around that period.

We first played in one of Southend’s oldest leagues, the Southend & District League, where the Rovers stayed until 1982. Rovers were the leagues most dominant clubs, especially in the 1960s and 1970s and to this day remain so on record. The switch in 1982 saw the club move to the newly formed Southend & District Alliance Football League, but sadly this league folded in 1989 leaving Rovers with a decision to move back to the Southend & District League or take a step up in standard. With what most Rovers feel to be the best squad amassed by a manager, in this case Eddie Nash, Rovers took the decision to step up to intermediate level and joined the Essex Intermediate League.

Rovers remained in the Essex Intermediate League for three seasons, winning the championships of Divisions Three and Two in successive seasons. After the latter, Rovers successfully applied to join the Essex Senior League and found themselves in Step 5 of the Non-League pyramid, which for a village club was a tremendous feat.

In the 1994-1995 season Rovers narrowly beat Sawbridgeworth Town FC for the Essex Senior League title. Rovers had collected 71 points for the season and lost just three times although the title win was only won on goal difference (18). During that season Rovers forward Paul Flack scored 28 goals, which included a haul of 4 goals away at Eton Manor as Rovers celebrated a 9-0 victory. Also included in his stunning season were two further hattricks. That season his strike partner Neil Ramsey grabbed 20 goals as Rovers hit home 82 goals.

Rovers defence of the Essex Senior crown would falter the following season, finishing 2nd behind Romford. In the 1996-1997 season Rovers would also finish second again, behind Ford United by just three points. The 1997-1998 season would be Rovers worst season in the Essex Senior League, finishing mid-table, 7th, and 36 points behind winners Concord Rangers.

The club’s final appearance in the Essex Senior League saw them finish 2nd behind Bowers United. However, due to Bowers United failing to meet ground grading requirements for promotion, Rovers were promoted to the Isthmian League in their place. With Isthmian League Division Three on the horizon for the 1999-2000 season, Rovers move into Step 4 of the league pyramid was complete.

At the very first attempt Rovers were promoted to

Division Two finishing behind East Thurrock Utd by three points. Promotion to Division Two gave Rovers some stiffer opposition and the season finished with Rovers in mid-table.

In 2002 the Isthmian League then reorganised and Rovers found themselves in a new look Division One North, finishing mid-table but more than holding their own in what was a very competitive league. In 2003 the club were embroiled in a relegation fight, although this was won convincingly as Rovers finished 15 points ahead of the relegation zone. A further league reorganisation in 2004 saw the club switch to the Southern Football League Eastern Division for two seasons.

The 2004-2005 season saw Rovers miss relegation by one point due to Erith & Belvedere FC being deducted three points, but in the 2005-2006 season Rovers bounced back to finish safely in mid-table.

For the 2006-2007 season Rovers found themselves in familar territory, switching back to the Isthmian League Division One North, where we finished 12th. Two further seasons saw Rovers finish 13th and stabilise themselves as a Ryman League club.

The 2009-2010 season brought a record number of points for the Rovers at Ryman League level, 64, but towards the end of the season manager Iain O’Connell was offered the management of Ryman Premier League side Margate leaving assistant Ryan Wilkinson and physio Cleve Taylor to take over temporary control with 12 games to go. In a season that saw Rovers top the table for 9 weeks, the dizzy heights would eventually get to O’Connell’s side as they finished in 9th place, 13 points behind the playoffs.

Ryan Wilkinson and Cleve Taylor would be implemented as joint-managers for the 2010-2011

season and their first season in charge would offer up 44 points and 15th place in the league.

Their start to the 2011-2012 season wasn’t what they had hoped and after one win in their opening nine games, both offered their resignations. Rovers made first team coach Danny Heath caretaker manager and he brought temporary stabilisation back to the side as they recorded two wins and three draws from his seven games in charge.

Rovers would offer the management post to Danny Greaves, son of ex-Tottenham and England legend Jimmy Greaves. Danny saw that a clean sweep of the side was required and let go the majority of the squad, bringing in loanees whilst trying to sign up new players. Unfortunately this plan didn’t work and after a miserable run of six losses in a row, he too offered his resignation.

Rovers would offer ex-Captain and stalwart Dan Trenkel the position as manager in November 2011 in an effort to stabilise the club. However, Trenkel was playing for Redbridge FC at the time who were on a fantastic run in the FA Cup, and it would be two weeks before he would be unveiled at the club, Danny Heath taking temporary control again, although this time losing both games.

Trenkel would bring back a number of players previously released by Danny Greaves, and opened his management career with a 2-2 draw at home to Waltham Forest , followed by a 1-1 draw at home to Harlow Town. However, although the side were performing better, results would continue to go against him and after just three wins in the remaining 21 games, including 6 draws, Rovers would find themselves bottom of the table and staring relegation into the Essex Senior League.

In 2014, they won the ESL by one point on the final day of the season, and were promoted back to the Isthmian League.

ALANWOODWARD

Good evening and a warm welcome to the SCT for tonight’s Ryman League game with Great Wakering Rovers.

It has been a bit of a turbulent few weeks here at the club, but everyone has remained positive and we’re all confident that there’s a bright future in store - and Saturday gave everyone the belief.

I’ve said it many times before and, no doubt, I will continue to say it many more times, but this club has shown time and again that when our backs are up against the wall, we can overcome adversity and stand up and be counted.

The boys did exactly that on Saturday with a terrific showing and four goals to boot - it was great to see the hard work rewarded and it certainly gives us even more reason to be positive.

Vicente Mansanet went between the sticks to cover for the injured Rob Budd who, of

course, was suffering after having to go off last week in the 3-0 defeat away at Thurrock.

There was good news at the weekend though, with Derek Duncan returning to first team action after his lengthy injury lay off and he made the Gaffer’s starting eleven. Derek got eighty minutes under his belt before taking a break and, with the team three goals up at the time, I’m sure he didn’t mind!

The boys have been playing with a few knocks in recent weeks but it is a hectic time of the season. After Saturday though, none of them minded that - let’s hope tonight goes the same way and we can be celebrating two good wins in four days.

Cheers,Alan

Mike Green reports

The Mead returned to winning ways in style as Soham Town Rangers were put to the sword by a devastating display as Keith McMahon’s side eradicated memories of a tough couple of weeks as the smiles returned to the club’s Sporting Club Thamesmead home.

The goals were shared around but the real stars of this particular show were Dereck Duncan outstanding in midfield on his season return from injury, and central defender Callum Macnaughton and keeper Vicente Mansanet both making their home debuts for the club. But as the Gaffer admitted after the game his entire side deserved the plaudits as Soham were put to the sword in the home side’s best display of the season thus far.

It was in those opening ten minutes that the home side were indebted to Vincente – the giant keeper denied Luke Stanley with his left foot as the striker broke clear and from the resulting corner, the keeper was brilliantly positioned to save Jorden Gent’s shot.

Once the home side got into their stride, the front three of Tyrus Gordon-Young, Rob Carter and Leslie Thompson pulled the visitors all over the pitch. Leslie sprinted clear for the opening Thamesmead chance, only for Tyrus to sweep the ball pver the bar, before Tyrus returned the compliment on 19 minutes for Leslie to open the scoring. A long cross was played into the box where Tyrus leapt highest to nod the ball down for Leslie to walk the ball into the net.

It was so very nearly two within a minute as Tyrus spectacularly volleyed wide. Tyrus was again the provider on 26 minutes as he flicked on Vincente’s huge clear for Leslie who this time laid the perfect pass for Rob Carter to walk the ball into the empty net.

So dominant were the home side, particularly across the middle of the park, where Derek was ably supported by messers Simon Glover and Jack Hopkins, it was a surprise that the home side didn’t score until just before the hour when Tyrus finally got the goal he deserved. A corner wasn’t cleared and as Callum brought the ball down, Tyrus gleefully lashed home his sixth goal of the season.

Ross Murphy then saw a low drive turned aside before Vincente had to be alert to palm aside Soham sub Scott Davis’ low shot across the face of goal. The cherry on the top of the Thamesmead pie came on 90 minutes when subs Adem Ramadan and Rashid Kamara combined magnificently for Adem to roll the ball superbly back into Rashid’s path and he gleefully hammered the ball into the bottom corner.

There was still time for Soham keeper Joe Templeman to pull off smart saves to deny Adem and Tyrus to keep the score at 4-0 – that though was enough on this particular day as the smiles returned to the SCT!

Brian Clough: 10 Years OnThis evening, Mike Green reflects on what Brian Clough would have made of the game ten years on, as well as what the 2014 top flight would have made of him.

THE BIG FEATURE

Page 19: Thamesmead Town v Great Wakering Rovers

I was actually honoured enough to interview Mr Clough in May 2001 shortly after Nigel’s Burton Albion had finished as runners-up to Margate (managed, incidentally, by current Dover Athletic boss Chris Kinnear) in the old Southern Premier League after the most titanic of dogfights - it was one of those title fights (before the days of play-offs) where both sides finished with ninety-odd points.

I still remember to this day setting up my radio gear to send the match back to Kent down the airwaves and then just stopping as he arrived to take his seat in the stand no more that five yards away from my commentary position.

I don’t remember too much about the game - Margate had clinched the league title the previous midweek - as, in truth, I think I spent ninety minutes plucking up the courage to ask the great man for a post-match interview. How do you approach a legend? Do you call him Brian? Cloughie? Mr Clough? Sir? Or even just God?! I don’t remember what I actually said, but I do remember nearly wetting myself when the great man said yes!

Now, the thing is, I didn’t tell the studio who I was going to interview - I just got the presenter to hand over to me “with a special guest”. Sadly, I don’t have a copy of the following few minutes, but the thing that will live with me forever was Mr Clough’s first three words to his first answer: “Well, young man!” Well, strike me down, I thought I’d gone to heaven... after years of watching this man in front of me giving exactly the same answer to all the famous TV interviewers - John Motson, Barry Davies, Brian Moore, Hugh Johns and Gerald Sindstadt to

name just a handful - he’d only gone and “young man’d” me!

Yes, he was a frail man who clearly wasn’t well by this point, but Brian Clough was always Brian Clough. You

know, when he did pass away on that September day a decade ago, I wouldn’t have minded betting that poor old St Peter got a taste of the “well, young man” speech as Cloughie reached those pearly gates... that paints a picture, doesn’t it?

You know, whilst we all go on about what a fabulous manager and character he was, it amazes me just how few people actually know what a hell of a player he actually was of our great game as well. In a career that only spanned nine years from 1955 to 1964, he scored two-hundred and fifty-one goals in just two-hundred and seventy-four games. That’s a goal rate that staggeringly works out as a goal scored every ninety-eight minutes played!

Indeed, he had been all set to become part of the England squad in 1966 before, on Boxing Day in 1964, playing in what were described as “icy conditions and torrential rain” (the Premier players would never play in conditions like them

today would they?) he collided with the Bury goalkeeper and tore both the medial and cruciate ligaments in his knee. And that, sadly, was the end of a playing career that hasn’t been seen since and probably will never be seen again!

To put it into context, Alan Shearer scored two-hundred and eighty-three goals but it took him over five-hundred and fifty games to do it. Of Cloughie’s main contemporaries, the great Nat Lofthouse scored four more goals than Brian but it took him almost an extra two-hundred games to do so, whilst Jimmy Greaves hit three-hundred and fifty-seven goals but in over five-hundred games. Just what might have been in 1966, I wonder, had Cloughie not got injured - it could have been Brian and not Geoff being the hero - it really was that close!

His managerial career from Hartlepool to Nottingham Forest was, of course, nothing short of legendary although just what would have happened if the Football Association had ever had the guts to appoint the man that they should have done not once, not twice, but three times, we will never ever know. But boy, haven’t there been some incredible discussions about what sort of England boss he would have made. Everyone has their own Cloughie story or Cloughie memory, and that simply makes the legend even more.

Was he a Special One before the Special One himself came along at Chelsea? In my opinion, undoubtedly. Was he an extrovert who was one of a kind? Now I’m not so sure about that one, especially when remembering Tommy Docherty, Don Revie and Ron Atkinson were his contemporaries in an era that included Ron Greenwood, Sir Bobby Robson and Bob Paisley!

After all, Cloughie was once asked about his fellow managers, and his answer was typically Cloughie: “I wouldn’t say that I’m the best manager, but I am in the top one.” Priceless, absolutely priceless.

Love him or hate him, and there were those who hated him, there can be no argument that he was one of a kind. And, quite likely, a kind that won’t be seen again in our lifetime. He was unique - he was the one, the only Brian Clough.

“It amazes me just how few people seem to know what a hell of a player he actually was of our great game as well - he scored a goal every ninety-eight minutes during his career!”

THE BIG FEATURE

Page 20: Thamesmead Town v Great Wakering Rovers
Page 21: Thamesmead Town v Great Wakering Rovers

Football is forever changing with goal-line technology, vanishing foam and extra officials all being added to the game at the highest level over the past few years.

And while all these changes have come at the top, it’s changes off the pitch that make the difference at the lower regions of the beautiful game.

It is perhaps strange how having your phone in your hand every second you’re awake can now be seen as social, but with the rise of Facebook and Twitter, it is exactly that.

Social networking has proven a key way for Non-League clubs to keep their fans in the know, with transfer news and results often posted on twitter as the pen squiggles on the dotted line or as the man in black blows his final whistle.

We recently had a letter sent in to The NLP regarding the demise of the Pink newspaper, a publication often printed and put on sale within half an hour of 3.00pm Saturday kick-offs finishing. It staggers belief really.

It used to be the only way for fans to find out how their team had fared, if they were not at the match of course.

Cardiff’s South Wales Sports Echo was available to buy within 20 minutes of the end of the game, featuring half-time reports and full time scores, with

a fuller edition later in the evening. Now you can read about matches almost instantly on a lot of websites.

We then went onto Ceefax, having to wait while the other 12 pages are updated before it scrolls back round to your team. Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports is almost the same, just with a presenter!

Of course, to watch these things you generally need to be at home, although social media has changed all this.

You can now follow your team when

on the move and some clubs are taking full advantage to gain their club a cult following.

Hyde are a prime example. In their poor season last year, where they picked up just one win all campaign, they managed to raise their ‘followers’ count to 45,000 thanks to a largely comedic look at their matches.

They now sit within the top 30 of English football clubs followed on Twitter and a campaign that most would have wanted to wipe from the memory as soon as possible will now be known as the year that Hyde became Twitter-famous!

Don’t get me wrong though – I love social networks.

Used correctly, it’s a great way to meet fellow fans and read others opinions. It’s amazing how often two people at the same match will have a completely different view of the 90 minutes they have just witnessed.

Used incorrectly and it can come back to bite you in the proverbial. Just ask Jason Puncheon!

THE NON-LEAGUE PAPER

Page 22: Thamesmead Town v Great Wakering Rovers

The Mead enter the FA Youth Cup this Friday evening as the U18s make the short trip to Dartford’s Princes Park, where they will face Greenwich Borough.

It should be a good game under the floodlights eith a 7.30pm kick-off. The team will also be supplemented by a few boys from the academy, so please come down and give your support as they would all really appreciate it.

So, 7.30pm at Princes Park, Dartford - what’s your excuse not to?!

In the league, meanwhile, and the U18s boys continued their unbeaten run with a very impressive win away at Cray Valley.

The lads had to come back from 2-1 down in the second half, scoring twice to go on and win the game 3-2. They will also face a Kent County Cup clash soon as they travel to face West Wickham Youth.

The U16s side for the club will definitely be aspiring to win the league title this season, putting in yet anothe r impressive display.

They emphatically beat Phoenix 5-0 at home, with one of the goals coming

from an extremely impressive twenty-seven pass move in the build up play.

Our U16s side are really setting the early pace in their age group, and playing some excellent football along the way too - their next league game is away to Long Lane.

Our U15s age group weren’t in match action this weekend, but they will now travel to Tonbridge Angels next in their league game this weekend coming.

The U14s, meanwhile, maintained their solid start to the new league campaign with another 2-2 draw, this time away to VCD Athletic.

They will also be back in action this coming Sunday, as they entertain Lewisham Youth at home.

It was a first point of the campaign for our U13s side, who picked up an impressive 1-1 draw at home to HF Paulista.

They will next travel to play Crayford Arrows on Sunday, so fingers crossed that they can pick up some more well-deserved point this weekend.

It seems to have been a long time coming, but the U11s finally got their

league season underway with a very entertaining 4-4 draw.

All reports would suggest that the boys ought to have won the game, especially having found themselves 4-1 up with just a quarter of an hour to play.

At least they managed to hang on to record a very well-earned away point. They will now be entertaining Phoenix this weekend in an 11am kick-off.

Once again, I leave you with a plea to come on down to Princes Park this Friday evening to back the boys in their FA Youth Cup opener.

With a 7.30pm kick-off, each and every one of us and all of the boys would be so grateful of any support that could be put our way.

Finally, please also come on down to the SCT on a Sunday and be thoroughly entertained by the Mead’s youth teams - they may well be some of our first team stars of the future and they’re playing some excellent stuff in their own right, so give them your support!

THE CLEANSHEETCANCERCHALLENGEThe Clean Sheet Cancer Challenge is a new initiative that the Mead have adopted for the campaign.

The first team goalkeeper will wear a special pink kit and the idea is simple - the goalkeeper will be sponsored to keep those all-important clean sheets. You can either sponsor per clean sheet, or simply make a donation for the complete season in one go.

Rob Budd, whose family unfortunately know all about this terrible disease, explains: “It was a huge shock when my sister Emma first told the family, but she fought the disease all the way for three years and was always so positive.

“I miss her every day and she was an inspiration to all who knew her, and she touched everyone that came into her life.”

Emma Minshull, a Central Fundraising Executive at Cancer Research told us, “It was great to hear more and hear about your plans. The Mead will be joining the thousands of people helping our ground breaking scientists to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.

“I look forward to hearing more about your progress during the season and thanks again for choosing to fundraise for Cancer Research UK.”

You can back the Clean Sheet Cancer Challenge by visiting www.justiving.com/cleansheet1 to donate today.

Alternatively, find a committee member on matchdays to sign a sponsorship form, or donate cash into the collection boxes all around the Mead Bar - they will be there all season long.

MAN OF THEMATCH

Once again, we’re delighted that the Cooper Family are generously sponsoring our Man of the Match award this year.

Each home game, the Man of the Match award will be presented to the winning player by the Cooper family, pictured above, who have once again been very kind as to sponsor the award.

They got on board last season with the award in the first half of the campaign and it proved to be a huge success - the whole team were even awarded the accolade after a resounding win over Maidstone!

The club would like to extend its sincere thanks to the family for their continued support - recent signing Callum MacNaughton won the award on Saturday.

The award is presented in the Mead Lounge after the game, so why not hang around with us and congratulate the recipient for a fine performance?

FOLLOW EDDIE’S MEAD CAB ON THE ROAD TO:

REDBRIDGESaturday 27th September

Kick-Off: 3.00pm

Follow the A12 around the Olympic Stadium until you reach Gants Hill underground station.

At this roundabout, take the second exit onto the A123 and follow the road until you get to Redbridge Magistrates Court on your right.

Turn right, signposted for Craven Gardens parking and, as you go round the bend, turn left, again following the signs for Craven Gardens parking.

Take the immediate right turn, go straight over the roundabout and, as you go over the bridge, the ground will appear on your right hand side.

NEXTHEREThe Mead return to action here at the SCT next Tuesday night for the visit of Chatham Town, also with a 7.45pm kick-off.

Kevin Watson’s side have been consistently inconsistent in recent weeks, with a run of form that has seen their wins followed by defeats, and vice-versa.

However, having gone through a run of just two wins in nine after a promising opening day victory, Watson will be hoping that the Chats have started to find their feet this season now.

On Saturday, they picked up an impressive 2-0 away win at Maldon & Tiptree, who have started the season slowly, and the Chats will be hoping that it can provide a platform to build upon as they look to make a concerted push for the top five after last season’s midtable finish.

The Chats are doing without striker Ade Yusuff now too, who recently made the news for switching to professional football with League Two side Dagenham & Redbridge whilst still working his shifts as a waiter at Wagamama’s - Yusuff netted eight goals in the Chats opening ten games this season before his switch.

Watson’s men travel to Harlow this evening before welcoming AFC Sudbury on Saturday in their two games before playing the Mead.
