FROM THE EDITOR...Good afternoon everyone and welcome to Sporting Club Thamesmead for the first time in 2014.

Firstly, a Happy New Year to you all and I hope that you’ve enjoyed your festivities in recent weeks, but it’s back to the football today!

Last time here saw a big 2-1 win over Cray Wanderers for the Mead, before two days later slipping to a disappointing defeat at Met Police. With Wednesday’s trip to Margate postponed, here’s hoping we kick 2014 off with three points today.

The main feature in today’s issue is a tribute to Mark Gray, who was sadly lost this time last year after much commitment to Thamesmead Town Football Club. Everyone associated with the club passes on their thoughts to his family who will join us at the game this afternoon.

BEST OF THE REST...

FROM THE CHAIRMAN:

TERRYHILL

Good afternoon everyone and, firstly, let me welcome the players and officials of Billericay Town to our new home here at Sporting Club Thamesmead.

Hopefully you have all had a great Christmas and I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a very Happy New Year as we begin the 2014 footballing calendar this afternoon.

This time of year is also a special time to us all here at Thamesmead Town Football Club, as it was just twelve months ago that we sadly lost our good friend, Mark Gray.

Simone, his wife, and Luke, his son, are here with us this afternoon and have kindly sponsored today’s game in Mark’s memory.

Mark was a really top bloke, a true friend and a staunch supporter of Thamesmead Town. He will certainly be looking down on us today and willing for us to win, so let’s hope we can achieve that for him.

The last game we played with Billericay was way back in August at the start of the season and, although we lost the game, we came away feeling unlucky not to have taken three points.

We lost our goalkeeper, Rob Budd,

during the warm-up to a dislocated shoulder and outfield player Callum McGeehan had to replace Buddy in between the sticks.

Despite starting the game well, finding ourselves two goals up and even hitting the bar on the stroke of half-time, we eventually lost the game 3-2 after two errors by our stand-in goalkeeper.

I’m sure that if Buddy had been able to take his place in goal then we would

have won the game.

After a shaky start to the campaign, Billericay have started to the climb the table in more recent weeks so today’s game will be tough, but I’m sure it is one that we can cope with.

Get behind the boys and let’s start 2014 on a bright note.

Enjoy the game,Terry

“We find ourselves in the bottom four so we are going to have to fight our way out & we

have to start winning games now”

FROM THE DUGOUT:

KEITHMcMAHON“Every game is a cup final to us - we have twenty-two games left & twenty-two points

could well keep us up!”

Good afternoon and welcome back for todays game against Billericay Town, and welcome to Craig and the rest of his management team and players - I hope you enjoy your short stay here and wish you a safe journey home! Before I look back on the first part of our season, I’d like to take a minute or two to remember our old friend Mark Gray who was so very tragically taken from us a year ago this week.

When I was told it was a year since Mark’s passing, I simply couldn’t believe that it had been that long already! Elsewhere in these pages, you will see what we all hope that Simone and Luke think is a fitting tribute to Mark, and we sincerely hope that they enjoy the afternoon and we can honour Mark’s memory with a performance this afternoon. We always knew it was going to be a tough league for us this season and so it has been. That said for the last couple of months, we’ve done really well and shown that we can compete at this level and ended the year with just a couple of defeats in ten games.

Going into the second half of the season we know that its going to be tough but we’ve also shown that we can compete! The first quarter of the season was tough - we were green a little bit and even a bit naiive for the level that we’re now at, but we’ve now got to grips with it.

Lowestoft shows how far we have come when we lose 0-5 up there and then should have beaten them here a few weeks ago - we could have won at Lewes had they not equalised in the last minute; Canvey Island - we went there and got a good point - we’re playing some good sides and getting results.

Obviously we’d prefer wins but we’ve stopped the rot. We changed our shape and a hell of a lot of personnel and we’re starting to get to grips with it. It’s difficult because of restrictions on budgets and players come available especially around this time of year and if a better player comes along, yes I will try and get them.

We’ve got a few injuries and suspensions looming but we’re settled now on the shape that we play and if we can keep players away from injury we’ll get that settled side that we all want.

The whole atmosphere around the place has changed and that’s what we want - the Bognor game here was one of the turning points for me as they won the game with a dive in the last minute and had Hornchurch the next game and we again conceded in the last minute after battling so well.

I hope that things were turning and then we went to Harrow Borough and beat them - and that was the start of the run. We’ve had a couple of hiccups - Leiston I

think were one of the best teams coming forward that we’ve played and at the Met Police last weekend - there’s always been belief. I’ve seen a lot of games this season and all the lads have bought into the idea on the training ground.

I’ve gone back onto it in the last weeks which has made a difference and we just need to take things on from here and not rest on our laurels.

Every game is a cup final to us - there are 22 games left - 22 points could well keep us up; I know that’s going to sound stupid but with people saying that we’ve got to turn the draws into wins... ok, in hindsight, but when you’re in our position draws are big - they do feel like wins sometimes - and we’ve just been positive; have taken and will take every point that we gain. In the second half of the season we will take some defeats without a doubt and there could be a drubbing or two against one of the top sides as if you play them and its their day and they’re that good, it will happen.

Keep a level head, keep clear, and just think about what we’re doing and that’s getting results in order to keep our place in the division.

Enjoy the game,The Gaffer

FROM THE BOARDROOM:

PAULBOWDEN-BROWN

“May I wish you all the very best for the year ahead - hopefully we will cement our place within the Ryman Premier League”

THE BOARDROOM

May I welcome the directors, officials, players and supporters of Billericay Town to the SCT and a safe journey home after an enjoyable game and refreshments.

I hope you’ve all had a great Christmas and New Year’s break with your families and enjoyed the time off, although I note many people only have a couple of days off over this time now.

May I take this opportunity to wish all of you the very best for the year ahead and, hopefully, it will be the year when the club cements its position within the Ryman Premier League on and off the pitch.

Hopefully we will also formalise all outstanding matters with the Trust, continue the fine efforts of bringing in more of the local community and also restructure the Limited Company so the directors can bring in much-needed third party investment.

This last note is a major must if we, as a club, can continue to meet the demands of modern non-league football.

Over the holiday period we picked up another three points when we played Cray at home on Boxing Day, before visiting the Met Police on the Saturday (and, despite the M25 resembling a large

car park, I did manage to get to the game for kick-off!).

In my opinion, we played very well on the day considering that Keith was struggling to put a team out due to injuries and suspensions and, nevertheless, there were plenty of positives to be taken despite the 3-1 defeat.

The boys were committed to the task and, on another day, I think we could have taken all three points.

I thought our opponents were second best for effort, but benefitted from the rub of the green which is something I’m sure will change for us - it was one of my New Year’s wishes!

You’ll have all seen the pictures on the news showing the flooding around the south east, I’m sure.

Personally, I live in Maidstone where the river burst its banks and caused considerable flooding - the worst, I believe, since 2000.

With problems for all residents, I hope that everyone who suffered any damage can quickly get back to normality.

There have been many postponements of games which

will hit clubs hard who rely on their matchday revenue - I’ve always found midweek rearrangements to be another death knell in the survival of small clubs.

Please buy one of our New Year draw tickets today, as all funds go to the club.

The draw will be made at full time with a great first prize of a chocolate hamper - great for those with a sweet tooth, or maybe your wife or girlfriend!

Keith has put together a great squad, and I hope you will see the wisdom of Keith’s experience come together during the next four months.

There have been player movements both in and out this season, but I believe Keith has developed the right balance for the side to gel as a unit.

Let’s cheer our teams on and enjoy a game of football - I’m hoping for the rub of the green!

Happy New Year to you all.

IN OPPOSITION:

BILLERICAY“With three back-to-back home games

coming up after today, ‘Ricay will want to give themselves chance of a late push”

If 2013 was successful for the Mead thanks to promotion to the Ryman Premier League, 2014 will be all about maintaining that status.

Craig Edwards’ Billericay side are the first opponents of the New Year as Keith McMahon and the Mead aim to preserve their status in the final twenty-one games of the campaign.

‘Ricay, who were relegated from the Conference South last season, look as though they may have given themselves a little too much to do in any attempts at immediately bouncing back, but will be looking to finish a run of four successive away games undefeated this afternoon, having picked up seven points from trips to Margate, East Thurrock and AFC Hornchurch in December.

With three back-to-back home games coming up after today, Craig Edwards’ side will want to give themselves every chance of a late play-off push, having bowed out of all cup competitions now - losing on penalties to Colchester United in the Essex Senior Cup.

“It was a disappointing way to go out but that’s the way it is, and I was so pleased with my players,” Edwards admitted.

“It was the last cup competition and we wanted to give it a go. We did that and we were hopeful that we would get through but it wasn’t to be.

“But the boys were excellent – they worked well and they were organised and disciplined.”

Billericay Town Football Club was formed in 1880 making it the 11th oldest club in Essex. It moved into the Romford & District League in 1890 competing until 1914.

After the 1st World War, BTFC entered the Mid-Essex League where they remained until 1947. Between 1947 and 1966 they played in the Southern Essex Combination League. In 1966 they became founder-members of the Essex Olympian League.

Five years later, in 1971, Billericay Town Football Club became founder-members of the Essex Senior League and the clubs six-year stay in that competition saw them win the Championship three times and be Runners-Up twice (and third the other season). The League Cup was won four times and they were Finalists once. In addition they won the League Challenge Cup the only time that it was competed for.

Whilst members of the Essex Senior League, the club won the FA Vase in 1976 beating Stamford 1-0 after extra-time at Wembley Stadium. The following season, 1976/1977, the club again reached the FA Vase Final. After a 1-1 draw at Wembley, the replay was played at Nottingham Forest F.C. Billericay Town emerged victorious with a 2-1 victory over Sheffield, reputedly the oldest club in the world.

Billericay Town also became the first Non-League club to win the Rothmans Merit Award in 1978 for “having made a worth-while contribution to the wide spectrum of the game in 1977/78” - the only club previously to have won this Award was Liverpool, the previous season,

when they were the European champions

Progressing to the Athenian League in 1977, Billericay won the Championship and the League Cup in their first season. They became Champions again in 1978/1979 and were elected into the Isthmian League.

Billericay Town became the first club to win the F.A.Vase for a third time in 1979 when they defeated Almondsbury Greenway 4-1. This match was notable for a hat-trick by Doug Young - the first hat-trick in a Cup Final at Wembley since Geoff Hurst`s in the 1966 World Cup Final.

After their success in the Athenian League, Billericay`s league successes continued in the Isthmian League when in their first season they won the Division 2 title with a winning margin of 17 points, scoring 100 goals in their 36 league matches. The following season, in Division 1, they finished as runners-up to Bishops Stortford - the first time in the history of the Isthmian League that a club had won promotion in two successive seasons on entry into the League.

Billericay then had five seasons in the Premier Division before being relegated in 1986. They then spent two years in Division One before again being relegated - this time into Division Two North.

Following re-organisation of the League, Billericay finished in third place in the newly formed Division Two and so gained promotion to Division One. That season, 1991/1992, they finished the season with an unbeaten run of 15 games, including winning the Essex Thames-Side

Trophy.

Full Membership of the Football Association was achieved in 1993, twelve years after obtaining Associate Membership in 1981.

Promotion back to the Premier Division was obtained in 1998. The club finished runner-up in 2004.2005 before losing in the playoffs, they again reached the play-offs in 2006/2007. In what probably ranks as the most remembered game in recent years, Billericay beat local rivals Chelmsford in the semi-finals on penalties in front of a crowd of over 2,000. The final however ended with a less successful penalty shoot out and defeat to Bromley.

In November 2007, the club staged its biggest ever competitive game at New Lodge – reaching the First Round Proper of the FA Cup for the third time, Billericay finally drew league opposition for the first time in the form of Swansea City. The Blues took a first half lead before going down to two late goals.

The 2010/11 season saw much local success. The first team lifted the Essex Senior Cup for the first time in 35 years and the club were in fact triple County winners as the youth development programme was rewarded with the Under 18 and Under 16 sides also winning their respective County Cup competitions.

This success was built on in 2011/12 as the club finally secured promotion to the Blue Square Bet South as Ryman League Champions. However, it proved to be a one season stay, despite a good start, the second half of the season was blighted and a return to the Ryman league beckoned.

BARRY LANDY’S DOWN IN THE BOX

www.downinthebox.co.uk | @BarryLandyDITB

The redemption of Luis Suarez appeared complete a few weekends ago, as the Uruguayan led, quite literally, Liverpool to the five goal hammering that proved Andre Villas Boas ultimate undoing.

The striker himself undid the Spurs defence twice, bringing his seasonal total at the time to 17.

In just 11 matches, considering Suarez started the season with six games to run on his ban for biting Branislav Ivanovic in April, it’s all the more impressive. Almost three years after joining Liverpool from Ajax, only now is Suarez’ precocious and exhilarating talent being appreciated. He’s made it hard for us.

Goals and lots of them, tend to atone greatly for misdemeanours of the past. When receiving a record ban for racial abusing Patrice Evra, the club stood by him. The disgusting biting incident late last year looked to be a final straw and with flirtations with other clubs a constant thread throughout his Liverpool career, he looked to heading towards the Anfield exit door.

Now, that outcome is unthinkable for Liverpool fans, with Suarez having repaid their perserverance and patience in his most valuable goals. Lots of them and dispatched with a panache and impudence unmatched in the Premier League.

In that match against Spurs, in the absence of Steven Gerrard, Suarez was given the captain’s armband by Brendan

Rodgers, a decision that would have been unconceivable just six months ago.

It was then, in the midst of self-inflicted scrutiny of his actions, that Suarez insist he leave the club citing media intrusion. Having stood by him, ill-judged t-shirts and all, the club and its support had every right to wash their hands of the striker.

A maverick he most certainly was, but there was little sign of a leader of men simmering beneath brazen disloyalty. Now, with Gerrard sidelined until the New Year, the Uruguyan continues to wear their armband as Liverpool’s title push continues, underpinned by his goals.

It begs the question, does this de-value what the captaincy is? A role earmarked for a leader, someone who can cajole and liase, offer support and a set standards, is now handed to a man who’s preference for the purchase of a one way ticket out of the club last summer was made all

too clear.

No question, players who are given the armband speak of the privilege and honour that comes with it but is captaincy in modern day football more so a carrot to dangle in the face of interest from other clubs?

So often these are players whose commitment to the cause may be in question, their stature in the eyes of the fans under threat. Is the captaincy just a method of mere placation, a symbolic promotion of sorts to quell their desire for a transfer?

For Suarez, read Cesc Fabregas and Robin Van Persie at Arsenal and on occasion, Wayne Rooney at Manchester United. The Football League is full of examples.

People have short memories and perhaps once upon a time, the armband was more treasured than it is nowadays.

Modern day captaincy a method of mere placation for Liverpool, Suarez and co

Luis Suarez has been outstanding this season

THE TREATMENT ROOM:

BEHIND THEGREEN DOOR

“It’s easy to be negative, but the group is important - I’m sure if we can stay focused

& lift each other the only way is up”

THE PHYSIO

Welcome back to today’s game and I hope you’ve all had an enjoyable time off over Christmas.

We enjoyed a pleasing result against Cray last time here, despite not being amongst our best performances. We ought to have been more clinical in front of goal but, at the end of the day, a win is a win and three points is always most welcome!

I’ve been with the Mead for quite a few years now, and I know this is our biggest challenge so far. But I believe the key is positivity - it’s so easy to be negative, but we have to pick each other up and keep going, turning those into positive thoughts.

My second sport is boxing, and when a fighter has a bad round the job of his team in the corner is to pick him up again, and lift him for the next round.

It’s easy to be negative, but that’s why the group is important. I’m sure if we can stay focused on the task ahead then the only way is up the table.

The Met Police game was, unfortunately, one to forget. One again, we conceded soft goals but, what is more annoying, is that for patches of the game we played some good stuff and looked by far the better side.

We had a depleted squad with the squad carrying several knocks.

Danny Phillips has a broken toe, Chris Saunders has strained his calf, Shamir Mullings with a groin problem and Rob Budd has a sore shoulder.

Further to that, Junior Baker was also serving a one match suspension so we were down in numbers, but every week we keep going, so please keep cheering the boys on.

Finally from me, let’s remember Mark Gray who we sadly lost a year ago. Firstly a Mead fan, Mark was a big part of the team who ran this club and, he may be gone, but he will never be forgotton.

MATCH REPORT:

ACTION REPLAY

This certainly wasn’t an advert for Ryman Premier League football that will live long in the memory, but it was a big result for the Mead.

The three points took Town to within touching distance of climbing out of the division’s bottom four for the first time this season, whilst for Cray Wanderers, there can be little to cheer their loyal band of fans this festive period!

The points for the Mead mean that the improvement continues - its now just one defeat in nine for the Gaffer and the team - and takes the side to just three points from fifth bottom East Thurrock United. The win also secured the home sides first double of the season.

The Mead hit the woodwork no fewer than five times during the course of the game, had two scrambled off of the line and missed a second half penalty as two wonderful strikes from Theo Fairweather Johnson and debutant Rashid Kamara sealed the points - Rashid was an inspiration on debut and deservedly won the sponsored Man of the Match award.

Before the game Cray were hit by the

recall of England U18s keeper Charlie Grainger to League One leaders Leyton Orient for the trip to Priestfield after a training ground injury.

If that wasn’t bad enough for Micky Chapman’s side, the Mead hit the ground running and totally dominated the opening half.

Junior Baker’s downward header bounced just wide; Baff Addae was denied by replacement keeper Ladar Kone as he clawed the ball out from

under the cross bar, before Shamir Mullings was denined by Jidi Madualo’s last gasp challenge denied the Mead front man after Junior had nodded down Jordan Hibbert’s free kick.

The Mead eventually took the lead seven minutes from half time courtesy of a screamer from Theo.

He picked the ball up just inside the Cray half and from fully 30 yards arrowed a drive beyond the despairing Kone and into the top left hand corner.

17The Mead v Billericay Town

Cray almost grabbed an equaliser just before half time when Aaron Rhule’s driven cross was just too far in front of the stretching Tommy Whitnell at the back post.

The opening quarter of an hour “belonged” to home skipper Lewis Tozer, even if he will choose to forget it very quickly.

On 54 minutes, Rashid and Baff combined down the left, and as Addae was brought down, up stepped the Mead skipper to strike the penalty only for Kone to guess rightly as he dived to block.

Toze was then booked for a clumsy foul before a clash of heads left his head swathed in bandages as he re

entered the fray looking similar to Terry Butcher all those years ago.

Both keepers the excelled - Rob Budd pulling off a great save to deny Whitnell’s low drive which was

arrowing into the bottom left corner of the net, whilst

at the other end Kone produced a fine back

pedalling save to tip the ball over.

Indeed from the resulting corner sub Mo Conteh

smacked a shot of the face of the

crossbar from an acute angle.

The substitute was again denied by the woodwork when a fine run saw his shot beat Kone and bounce to safety off of the right post before with 15 minutes left Rashid sealed the win with another pile driver.

Great combination play across the park found the new man coming on off the wing and he took aim and sent the ball arrowing into the top left hand corner with poor Kone flailing once again!

Yet there was still some fight from the visitors and Alex Stavrinou’s low drive into the corner with five minutes left set alarm bells ringing for the home side.

Yet it was the Mead who again went closest as first Rashid’s shot cannoned off of Kone and just out of reach of Mo, and then in stoppage time, it was Sean Roberts’ turn to hit the wood work with a free kick that thudded into the bar and away to safety.

In the end it was a very comfortable three points for the home side and means that they travel to the Metropolitan Police who are just two places outside the bottom four for another vital game on Saturday.

REMEMBERING MARK GRAY

GrayM A R K

Twelve months have passed since the sad passing of one of Thamesmead Town’s biggest friends and most ardent supporters, Mark Gray. Here, in

today’s feature spread, we pay tribute to Mark with a comment from his wife Simone and the messages relayed in last year’s programme with Ilford.

Last year when Mark passed away, he left a wife, Simone, and his son, Luke - and here, Simone pays her thanks to the club for their support throughout a difficult year for the family.

It’s hard to believe that it has been a year since Mark, one of Thamesmead Town’s biggest supporters, passed away.

I wanted to really take this opportunity to thank Keith McMahon, Terry Hill, all of the committee and the Mead players for all of the support that they have given to Luke and I this year.

Extra special thanks too go to Alan Martin, Albert Panting and Terry Hill for also ensuring that Luke can get along to so many away games in the past year as well!

Mark’s farewell in the old clubhouse made us so incredibly proud to be part of such a wonderful ‘family’ here at Thamesmead Town, and it showed us just what everyone thought of the big man.

For old and new supporters alike, Thamesmead Town really is the club with a big heart.

Good luck to Keith and the team today against Billericay.

A poem Mark wrote for his son, Luke:Every year since you were born you’ve left out a mince pieFor Santa Claus on Christmas Eve on his journey through the sky.

A bowl of water for the reindeer was left by the back doorWe like to rest and have a drink cause their hooves get very sore.

But this year I heard a rumour that you don’t believe in meBut if that’s the case then who did you see in the garden when you were three?

The long white beard, the big red coat, with his sled and his trusty reindeerHe knows if you’ve been good or bad and behaved throughout the year.

So Luke do you believe in Santa or is it all a pack of liesIf it is then who’s the greedy sod who’s eaten all the pies?!

Have a fantastic Christmas and a very Happy New Year.

Lots of love, Santa Claus

REMEMBERING MARK GRAY

Terry HillMark was a good friend to everyone at Thamesmead, always laughing and joking, and he is sadly missed at the club. We remember him as a big man, a big softy, who loved his football - he was Thamesmead through and through.

When I visited him in hospital he told me how strong Simone had been and how proud he was of Luke growing into a young man.

All of us at Thamesmead Town would like to send our condolences to Mark’s wife, Simone, and his son, Luke.

Keith McMahonWhen I heard the news I was in complete shock and all our preparations for the game that night went out of the window. I knew Mark had been ill but I had genuinely thought he was making good progress. Mark was always around the club and he loved Thamesmead. We don’t have too many supporters, but Mark always followed us home and away with Luke and it’s been difficult knowing Mark isn’t there when I turn around from the dugout.

Mark wasn’t just a loyal supporter but a big feature at the club, helping wherever he could. He would be the guy announcing things on the PA, turning from a supporter into a major factor at the club when I took over as manager. Mark has done everything from the programme, to match reports, to the groundsman and the PA announcer, as well as working behind the bar for me with Simone.

The biggest loss to us all is his friendship. Mark was a lovely man and a gentle giant, interested in whatever the club did and the players we had. Mark formed direct friendships with the players and even helped them in booking their holidays - he was responsible for our annual trips to Magaluf! I know I speak for all of the players and management in saying what a miss Mark is.

I have missed him as a true friend - someone who would do anything for you and would listen to you when you needed a rant.

Nothing was too much for Mark and I miss him - every game we do our best for Mark as I know he is with us in every game.

The turkey’s been devoured, Christmas jumpers are back in the wardrobe and in-laws have been seen off – rather like Step 3 defences in the case of a trio of big winners in my Non-League New Year Honours List.

It’s that time again when I recognise the grass-roots game’s finest for their efforts during the calendar year, and while it’s difficult to add the superlatives I’ve used in recent seasons to describe my old team-mate JOHN FRENDO, I’m going to attempt it here.

The 28-year-old is the reigning Non-League Paper Golden Boot winner thanks to his 42 league, FA Cup and Trophy goals in a total of 44 for Hitchin during 2012-13, and for years he’s been known to supporters of his clubs as ‘Lord’ Frendo.

But the only currency that guarantees a Non-League knighthood is prolific performance, and with 40 goals in 52 starts during 2013 for Hitchin and the Saints, Frendo fully deserves a new title, so Arise, Sir John Frendo!

Seven miles west along the A4147, BEN MACKEY gets the first of two MBEs handed out as a Man Bagging Easily, this term with Calor Premier table-toppers Hemel Hempstead, whose gaffer DEAN BRENNAN is rewarded for the Tudors having netted 119 goals already this season with a Manager Born Entertainer accolade.

Like Frendo, Mackey had been a regular scorer just below the top levels of Non-League for a number of seasons now with the likes of Brackley and Leamington.

In 2013, he’s actually scored three more than Frendo – but for three different clubs, with seven coming for St Neots and another seven for Stourbridge before his summer move to Vauxhall Road, where he had 29 in 31 games before yesterday.

Completing the hat-trick of goal aces is LEON METTAM, who has 34 this term for Evo-Stik Northern Premier League high-fliers Worksop Town.

He scored 23 last season, but the Tigers’ captain managed just seven of that haul after the turn of the year, so has 41 to his name for the calendar year with another hat-trick in the 5-2 Boxing Day win over Ilkeston.

The ex-Lincoln, Stamford, Corby and Gainsborough forward is being rewarded with one of a pair of MBEs for the Nottinghamshire club, with boss MARK SHAW also picking one up for the entertainment factor.

Worksop’s 25 league games so far have produced 132 goals, with 77 scored and 55 let in. That cavalier approach is something we at The NLP like!

The antithesis to that award goes to Cambridge United, where CHRIS MAXWELL has been in outstanding form this season. Using his native Welsh language, keeper Maxwell gets a CBE as a Ceidwad (not) Beaten Easily for his record with both Wrexham and the U’s while on loan from Fleetwood in 2013.

He rejoined the Dragons last January, kept a clean sheet on his second Reds debut at Forest Green on February 2 and has carried

on in the same vein ever since, recording 15 shut-outs in 23 league games for Skrill Premier leaders United, plus two in four FA Cup ties.

On the managerial front, I’d love to give TOMMY LAWSON another title for his work at Skelmersdale United – but he’ll have to settle for the Evo-Stik NPL Division One North one he added to the knighthood I handed him a year ago. Another could follow in 2014 with his Skem side currently top in their first season at Step 3.

Bromley’s MARK GOLDBERG gets an OBE as an Old Boy (re)Emerging for taking the Ravens to the Skrill South summit in his third spell as boss, after kicking off the year with just goal difference keeping them out of the relegation zone.

While similarly in the Skrill Premier, KEVIN WILKIN at Nuneaton, ALAN DEVONSHIRE at Braintree and NICKY LAW at Alfreton are recognised with OBEs for Over-turning Bad Expectations, each going into 2013 fearing the exit through the division’s trapdoor, but ending it dreaming of unlikely promotion.

But my final honour is delivered to Creasey Park, home of Dunstable Town who romped to the Spartan South Midlands championship as Invincibles last season. They have lost just twice on their return to the Calor Central, winning 12 league games in a row before Thursday’s goalless draw at Royston.

Joint managers DARREN CROFT and PAUL REEVES are not only the Dons of the Duns – they can now add CBE to their names as a Couple Bossing Everything!

RYMAN LEAGUE ROUND-UP

LEAGUE ROUND-UP:

RYMAN REVIEW

Wealdstone headed into the New Year as leaders of the Ryman League’s Premier Division but now by only one point after they were surprisingly beaten at home by Hampton & Richmond Borough.

In one of Hampton’s best performances of the season so far, they came from behind to spring a big surprise at Grosvenor Vale. The home side went ahead after Sean Cronin’s 25th minute penalty found the net. But just like against Kingstonian on Boxing Day, the Beavers showed their character, Tom Hickey on 35 minutes and free-scoring Charlie Moone 10 minutes later to go in front.

A second half onslaught was expected from the Stones but it was Hampton who got the vital next goal - Joe Turner notching his third of the campaign six minutes from time to make it 3-1 and confirm back-to-back wins.

Dulwich Hamlet reduced the gap to just one point after they swept aside bottom of the table Cray Wanderers at The Courage Stadium and climbed to second in the table, despite losing goalkeeper Phil Wilson at half-time.

Leading 2-0 at half-time, thanks to goals from Nyren Clunis after 11 minutes and Erhun Oztumer eight minutes later, Dulwich fans would have viewed the second half with some trepidation when centre-back Lewis Gonsalves donned the gloves. However, Dulwich’s dominance was almost total after the break and Gonsalves was not called into serious action. Oztumer went on to complete his hat-trick and there were also goals for subs Marc-Anthony Okoye and

Kershaney Samuels.

Kingstonian, AFC Hornchurch and Maidstone United complete the top five – but none managed a win on Saturday, although Maidstone’s game at Billericay Town was one of two postponements.

K’s were held to a 2-2 draw by struggling Harrow Borough, who certainly improved after a Boxing Day’s shocker against Metropolitan Police. Even more remarkable for Dave Anderson`s side was that they had to play for an hour with ten-men after Danny Leech was dismissed – Andre McCollin giving K`s the lead from the resultant penalty.

And Boro found themselves two-down four minutes after half-time when Ryan Moss netted. K`s were punished for missing several good chances to put the game to bed when sub Shaun Lucien rescued Harrow with a brace in the 79th and 90th minutes.

The Urchins were beaten by the odd goal in five at Ram Meadow by Bury Town, who are now eighth. Billy Clark gave the Blues an 8th minute lead that Joe Whight doubled just four minutes later. Stefan Payne reduced the deficit three minutes after half-time, but an own goal by Alex Bentley four minutes after that increased the home side`s lead to 3-1. Payne’s second for the visitors didn`t arrive until the second minute of stoppage time.

Lowestoft Town are now just three points adrift of the top five after coming back to beat Canvey Island 2-1 at Crown Meadow. The Gulls led through Spencer Bellotti’s goal just before the break. But the Trawlerboys, who had been disappointing to this point,

grabbed victory with two goals in a minute midway through the second half from Chris Henderson.

Bognor Regis Town remain in play-off contention after increasing Carshalton Athletic`s relegation fears with a 3-1 win at Colston Avenue. The Rocks led at the break through Ben Godfrey`s 21st minute effort and then increased that six minutes after the restart, courtesy of Scott Chamberlain.

Lewes’ hopes of mounting a top five challenge took another blow when they were held to a 2-2 Dripping Pan draw by fifth-bottom East Thurrock United – but it could have been worse. The Rocks took an 11th minute lead through David Bryant and doubled that 13 minutes later through John Easterford. A stern talking to at half-time saw the Rooks reduce the arrears within three minutes, courtesy of Charlie Penny and then Jack Dixon equalised just past the hour-mark.

The battle between two senior non-League bosses at Hartsdown Park saw Margate’s Terry Brown record his first win since taking over, beating George Borg`s Enfield Town 1-0. The only goal of the game came from Joe Vines just before the hour-mark to leave Town struggling second from bottom.

Hendon moved into tenth spot after beating Leiston by the same scoreline at Earlsmead. Michael Bryan gave the Greens a 33rd minute lead that Gareth Heath cancelled out four minutes after the break.

But Carl McCluskey restored Hendon`s lead on 69 minutes and veteran Jefferson Louis added a third four minutes later.

COMMERCIALCORNER

After the midweek washout at the supposedly sunny seaside, today we begin our 2014 fixtures by welcoming the players, officials and supporters of Billericay Town to the SCT on one of the most dramatic Saturdays in the calendar - I refer, of course, to the day that we make the TTFC New Year Draw! And there’s still time for you to get your tickets if you haven’t done so! You can buy tickets for the draw from the Committee room right up until it takes place at approximately 5:15pm after the game. Even today there are prizes being added, so at a cost of £1 per ticket and £5 per book, make sure you’ve got yours! As always, a big thank you to the Cooper family for their ongoing sponsorship of the home Man of the Match award - the winner from our last home game on Boxing Day was Rashid Kamara. Rashid, along with today’s recipient, with receive their respective prizes in the Mead Lounge after the game - but who will join him? Why not stay and see the presentation in the Mead Lounge, just before we make the New Year Draw?!

We’re still looking for local companies who would like to become part of our family here at the SCT - we can offer you and your friends or colleagues a great afternoon out! Interested? Simply get in touch with me on a matchday or by the details on this page. And finally, elsewhere in these pages we’re remembering Mark Gray who was so tragically taken from us a year ago today. Hopefully Mark’s widow Simone and son Luke will be with us this afternoon, but there was one thing that struck me this week, above all else, when reading the tributes that were paid to Mark at the time.

Please remember that Mark died before I joined the club, but the warmth that shines through all of the words that we have repeated elsewhere as a tribute to his memory this afternoon makes you really grieve yourself that you never knew him, and that speaks volumes. Mark - today is for you.

2013/14 FIXTURES & RESULTS

34 The Mead v Billericay Town

NEXT AT THE SCT:

GRAYS ATH.The Mead are back in action here at Sporting Club Thamesmead in a fortnight’s time, as Ryan Kirby brings his Grays Athletic side here.

The Gravelmen will be familiar opposition for the Mead, having won the Ryman Division One North last time around, with the Mead successful in the play-off campaign.

Grays have adjusted well enough to life back in the Ryman Premier League, currently sitting securely in midtable as the season’s second half gets underway.

Their position in fifteenth remains ten points clear of the relegation zone and, although the play-offs would appear to be too distant to mount any realistic challenge, Kirby will be happy with a season of consolidation after last season’s triumph.

The Gravelmen have been suffering from some winter blues just lately, though, losing their last three games on the bounce following a previous

run of four successive clean sheets heading into today’s trip to Enfield Town, having sat ninth before then.

Mead man, Junior Baker, had been released from Mill Field back in October, and Kirby insists that he had to make changes following back-to-back 5-1 and 4-0 defeats.

“I’ve never played in any team at any

level where we’ve let in nine goals in back-to-back games,” he told the Thurrock Gazette.

“It was a signal I needed to make some big changes and we’ve stressed the importance of keeping clean sheets.”

And whilst their position looks comfortable enough for now, Kirby will be keen to add points to the board.
