Paul Smith’s Cycling ScrapbookPaul Smith with Richard Williams
Were it not for a serious crash in his teens, fashion designer Paul Smith might have
become known as a successful racing cyclist. His cycling career cut short, and after a
six-month spell in the hospital, he opened a small boutique in England in 1970.
Today, Paul Smith is one of the UK’s most successful exports, with over 350 shops
worldwide. It was only relatively recently, however, that Smith publicly returned to
the world of cycling.
This lively scrapbook illustrates Smith’s favorite people, races, and places in the
cycling world through the images and ephemera that inspired him. From his
collection of cycling jerseys and his extensive library of cycling publications and
brochures of the 1950s and 1960s to the inspiration he has found in his cycling
heroes (Coppi, Anquetil, Bartali) and his collaborations with bike-makers (Mercian
and Pinarello) and race organizers, this is a personal and highly visual journey that
connects Smith’s love of cycling with his love of design.
Paul Smith’s Cycling Scrapbook is a winning combination of design and the
world’s most increasingly popular pastime, sure to thrill cycling fans and fashion
enthusiasts everywhere.
Paul Smith is one of the UK’s preeminent menswear and fashion designers. Richard Williams
is a former chief sports writer for the Guardian newspaper. He was previously chief sports
writer of the Independent, assistant editor of The Times, and editor of Time Out.

The Battle for HomeAn Architect in SyriaMarwa al-Sabouni Foreword by Roger Scruton
Drawing on the author’s personal experience of living and working as an architect in
Syria, this timely and fascinating account offers an eyewitness perspective on the
country’s bitter conflict through the lens of architecture, showing how the built
environment and its destruction hold up a mirror to the communities that inhabit it.
From Syria’s tolerant past, with churches and mosques built alongside one
another in Old Homs and members of different religions living harmoniously
together, the book chronicles the recent breakdown of social cohesion in Syria’s
cities. With the lack of shared public spaces intensifying divisions within the
community, and corrupt officials interfering in town planning for their own gain,
these actions are symptomatic of wider abuses of power.
With firsthand accounts of mortar attacks and stories of refugees struggling to
find a home, The Battle for Home is a compelling explanation of the personal impact
of the conflict and offers hope for how architecture can play a role in rebuilding a
sense of identity within a damaged society.
Marwa al-Sabouni has a PhD in Islamic architecture and runs a private architectural studio in
Homs, Syria. She has written for Architectural Review, and Wall Street International. She is
co-owner of the first and only online media site dedicated to architectural news in Arabic, Arch
News. Roger Scruton is a writer and philosopher. His books include The Dictionary of Political
Thought, A Land Held Hostage: Lebanon and the West, and The Aesthetics of Architecture.

In Search of the Irish DreamtimeArchaeology and Early Irish LiteratureJ. P. Mallory
Following his account of Irish origins drawing on archaeology, genetics, and
linguistics, J. P. Mallory returns to the subject to investigate what he calls the Irish
Dreamtime: the native Irish retelling of their own origins, as related by medieval
manuscripts. He explores the historical backbone of this version of the earliest
history of Ireland, which places apparently mythological events on a concrete
timeline of invasions, colonization, and royal reigns that extends even further back in
time than the history of classical Greece. The juxtaposition of traditional Dreamtime
tales and scientific facts expands on what we already know about the way of life in
Iron Age Ireland.
By comparing the world depicted in the earliest Irish literary tradition with the
archaeological evidence available on the ground, Mallory explores Ireland’s rich
mythological tradition and tests its claims to represent reality.
J. P. Mallory is an Irish-American archaeologist and world expert in linguistic archaeology. He
is the author of The Origins of the Irish and In Search of the Indo-Europeans, and coauthor of
The Tarim Mummies. He lives in Belfast.

Seeing OurselvesWomen’s Self-PortraitsFrances Borzello
For centuries, women’s self-portraiture was a highly overlooked genre. Beginning with
the self-portraits of nuns in medieval illuminated manuscripts, Seeing Ourselves finally
gives this richly diverse range of artists and portraits, spanning centuries, the critical
analysis they deserve. In sixteenth-century Italy, Sofonisba Anguissola paints one of the
longest series of self-portraits, from adolescence to old age. In seventeenth-century
Holland, Judith Leyster shows herself at the easel as a relaxed, self-assured professional.
In the eighteenth century, from Elisabeth Vigée-Lebrun to Angelica Kauffman, artists
express both passion for their craft and the idea of femininity; and the nineteenth
century sees the art schools open their doors to women and a new and resonant
self-confidence for a host of talented female artists, such as Berthe Morisot. The
modern period demolishes taboos: Alice Neel painting herself nude at eighty years old,
Frida Kahlo rendering physical pain on the canvas, Cindy Sherman exploring identity,
and Marlene Dumas dispensing with all boundaries.
Frances Borzello’s spirited text, now fully revised, and the intensity of the accom-
panying self-portraits are set off to full advantage in this new edition, now in
reading-book format.
Frances Borzello has specialized in the social history of art since obtaining her doctorate at
the University of London. She has published many books including The Naked Nude.

Daido TokyoDaido Moriyama
Daido Moriyama (born 1938 in Ikeda, Japan) invented a new visual language with his
work beginning in the mid-1960s. Frenetic and tormented, it depicted a reality that
was grainy, blurry, and out-of-focus. Witness to the spectacular changes that trans-
formed postwar Japan, his photographs express the contradictions in a country where
age-old traditions persist within a modern society. Often blurred, taken from vertig-
inous angles, or overwhelmed by close-ups, they show a proximity to and a
particular relationship with the subject.
Published to coincide with an exhibition at the Fondation Cartier, Daido Tokyo
includes many previously unpublished photographs (as well as those featured in the
exhibition), and an interview with the artist.
Daido Moriyama is a Japanese photographer. He is the recipient of the Infinity Award for
Lifetime Achievement from the International Center of Photography in New York.

The Floral Patterns of IndiaHenry Wilson
Author of Pattern and Ornament in the Arts of India Henry Wilson has deepened his
initial study of the decorative arts in India, creating a companion volume that focuses
on a single theme: the floral motifs in India’s architecture. From the illustrious Mughal
Empire during its greatest period of monument building and artistic creativity to the
time of British rule, which brought with it a period of peace that allowed great wealth
to be concentrated on the arts, the richness of India’s architecture is overwhelming.
Henry Wilson’s photographs reveal the skill, patience, and imagination of the
thousands of craftsmen who have turned to floral motifs and rendered them with
precision and creativity. Juxtaposed with the photographs are Wilson’s own graphic
transpositions of the designs—detailed drawings created by hand but with a
stencil-like clarity that helps us understand the original historical patterns. The result is
an invaluable sourcebook that will appeal not only to those interested in one of the
world’s oldest civilizations and greatest cultures but also to anyone seeking inspiration
for their own graphic creations.
Henry Wilson is a well-known photographer of architecture and interiors, with a special
interest in India. His is a frequent contributor to The World of Interiors, Architectural Digest,
and other design magazines. He lives in London.

Earth-Shattering EventsEarthquakes, Nations, and CivilizationAndrew Robinson
From antiquity until the present day, on every continent, human beings have made a
Faustian bargain with nature, exploring and altering the world at the risk of periodic
devastation by earthquake. Today around half of the world’s largest cities—as many
as sixty—lie in areas of major seismic activity. Earth-Shattering Events seeks to
understand exactly how human agency and great earthquakes have interacted, not
only in the short term but throughout history.
While physical devastation has occasionally led communities to permanent
decline and collapse, earthquakes have also presented opportunities for renewal, the
cities they destroy proving to be extraordinarily resilient. In each of the book’s
thirteen chapters, Andrew Robinson explores both the positive and negative ramifica-
tions of these natural disasters. After its destruction by an earthquake and fire in
1906, for example San Francisco went on to flourish, giving birth in the 1950s to the
high-tech industrial area on the San Andreas Fault now known as Silicon Valley.
Earth-Shattering Events is a timely investigation of the cultural, political, and social
impacts of major earthquakes of the modern era as it traces the history of
seismology (the scientific study of earthquakes).
Andrew Robinson has written more than twenty-five books in a wide range of subjects. A
former literary editor of The Times Higher Education Supplement, he is a regular book reviewer
for newspapers, magazines, and journals.

The Essential Joseph BeuysText by Alain Borer
Subject to passionate controversy during his lifetime, the work of Joseph Beuys is
now considered one of the most significant and influential contributions to twentieth-
century fine arts.
The Essential Joseph Beuys locates the artist’s oeuvre as he saw it: part of a
larger, philosophically based practice emphasizing direct democracy, free access to
education, and the restructuring of society to meet ecological requirements. A
total of 152 works from Beuys’s many fields of activity—drawings and watercolors,
prints and multiples, sculptures and objects, spaces and happenings—arranged in
chronological order demonstrate the artist’s formal versatility, creative richness,
and conceptual depth. The peculiar poetry of the materials Beuys used—felt,
grease, honey, wax, copper, and sulfur—emerges along with the gentle melancholy
that suffuses the work. Alain Borer analyzes the world of Beuys’s thoughts and
imagination with special reference to the artist’s written and spoken statements.
This survey is an essential introduction to the work and conceptual world of
Joseph Beuys that will appeal to anyone interested in twentieth-century art.
Alain Borer is a French poet and writer. He has been a professor at L’École supérieure des
beaux-arts de Tours since 1979, and a visiting professor at the University of Southern
California, Los Angeles, since 2005.

At Home in Sri LankaPhotographs by James Fennell Text by Tom Sykes
A decade after the publication of Living in Sri Lanka, photographer James Fennell
revisits the “Paradise Isle” in search of what makes a great Sri Lankan home. Traveling
with writer Tom Sykes, he has visited numerous houses and taken thousands of
photographs, as well as interviewing owners, interior decorators, architects, stylists,
and designers. Collectively, the twenty-six exemplary properties showcased in this
book capture the essence of elegant Sri Lankan living.
Sri Lanka is a place of geographic and cultural contrasts, qualities that are
reflected in its extreme weather. The best Sri Lankan architecture is structurally
versatile, using features such as overhanging roofs, slatted walls, and courtyards to
cope with intense sunshine and sudden downpours in equal measure. Climatic factors
also dominate the interiors of even the most luxurious homes: valuable antiques and
art give way to simple pieces of furniture, batiks, prints, and artfully crafted cushions,
with color or shadow used creatively to enliven expansive walls.
From the colonial grandeur of actress Gillian Anderson’s secluded retreat and the
sumptuous Wallawwa hotel to works by the celebrated architects Geoffrey Bawa and
Anjalendran, the structures illustrated here have all been built to respond to the
unpredictable natural environment, seamlessly blending indoor and outdoor living.
James Fennell is the photographer of Vanishing Ireland, as well as many other books including
The Irish Pub.

YokainoshimaA Celebration of Japanese Folk RitualsCharles Fréger
In Japan, the passing of the year is marked by festivals and rituals that have gone
largely unchanged for centuries. Elaborate outfits, made from textiles as well as
branches, straw, and other materials plucked from the natural environment, are
donned in rural, agricultural, and fishing communities throughout Japan to celebrate
seasonal rites of fertility and abundance. Yokainoshima (literally “island of monsters”)
explores the extraordinary crop of masks, costumes, and characters that reappear
with the return of each season.
Charles Fréger’s photographs combine the attention to detail of a documentary
photograph with individual portraiture in a fresh and distinctive style. Texts by
specialists in Japanese folk culture and anthropology accompany the photographs,
putting the huge variety of eclectic costumes in context with descriptions of the
local festivals, dances, and rituals where they are worn.
This compelling sequence of new portraits by an internationally acclaimed
photographer will captivate enthusiasts of fine art photography and far off places as
it pulls back the curtain on a strange and magical centuries-old tradition.
Charles Fréger is a photographer based in Rouen, France. His previous books include Wilder

including National Geographic.

Magnum CyclingGuy Andrews
It’s no surprise that some of the world’s finest photographers have shot a bicycle
race at some point in their careers. Cycling embodies the elements of a great
photograph—the human form, pushing itself to physical extremes, thrilling
landscapes, the spectacle of the crowd. It also provides a perfect opportunity for
reportage, social documentary, and street photography.
The book is grouped into thematic chapters, featuring works by a range of
Magnum photographers expertly curated and accompanied by descriptive captions.
Each chapter also features a series of photographs by a single photographer, telling
the story of an iconic moment, event, or scene. Chapters explore themes such as the
Tour de France, track racing in the velodrome, winter training, and the revelry of the
fans and crowds, with images by a variety of iconic photographers, including Henri
Cartier-Bresson, Robert Capa, Guy Le Querrec, and Harry Gruyaert.
Magnum Cycling is a celebration of the great artists who have captured those most
fugitive elements in cycling: the personalities, the emotions, and human endurance.

Architecture in WoodA World HistoryWill Pryce
Many of the world’s greatest buildings are made of wood, yet it is undervalued or
ignored in histories of architecture. However, leading designers around the world are
increasingly drawn to it to satisfy social and environmental needs.
Will Pryce is an award-winning photographer who trained as an architect and
photojournalist. Intensely dramatic but not overdramatized, technically flawless but
not merely documentary, his internationally acclaimed photographs convey all the
excitement of encountering these amazing structures firsthand.
He has traveled the world seeking the famous and the obscure. In the text he
shows how the wooden heritage of Japan grew from its Buddhist history; how
Russia’s carpenters determined its iconic domes; how Norway’s stave churches
contain clues to her pagan past; how Turkic tribes brought the yali from Asia; how
the settlers of New England employed a provincial English tradition on the new
continent; and how, today, sophisticated architects such as Peter Zumthor and Renzo
Piano are inventing an eloquent new wooden architecture.
Will Pryce studied architecture at Cambridge University and the Royal College of Art, and
photojournalism at the London College of Printing.

BrickA World HistoryJames W. P. Campbell Photographs by Will Pryce
This totally original architecture book—named 2004 Choice Outstanding Academic
Title—follows the story of brick from 5000 BC to its use in building today, from the
vast baths and basilicas of ancient Rome, through the wonders of Gothic brick in
Germany and the majestic temples of Pagan, to its modern revival.
Marvelously illustrated with spectacular, specially taken photographs, Brick is
at once an historical account of how bricks have been employed by architects of
every period, a technical survey of brickmaking and bricklaying, and an essay on
architectural and cultural history.
The authors have applied their expert visual and technical knowledge to more
than one hundred themes, from bricks in ancient Egypt to their distinctive use by
such modern masters as Louis Kahn, Alvar Aalto, and Renzo Piano. Great works of
engineering—viaducts, tunnels, and bridges—are given prominence alongside great
cathedrals, country houses, temples, and mosques, testifying to the incredible
versatility and importance of bricks and brickwork.
James W. P. Campbell is Fellow in Architecture and History of Art, Queens’ College,

Rethink the ModularEdited by Burkhard Meltzer and Tido von Oppeln
In 1965, leading Swiss furniture company USM patented its signature modular
furniture system, USM Haller. This flexible storage solution for both home and office
was inspired by Fritz Haller’s modular architecture and designed for infinite reuse
and reconfiguration. Considered a design classic, USM Haller is included in the
collections of major museums including MoMA and the Cooper-Hewitt National
Design Museum.
Released as part of USM’s fiftieth-anniversary celebration of this iconic furniture
design, Rethink the Modular examines the role of unit-based systems in the wider
context of architecture and design. It combines previously published writings,
specially commissioned essays from thinkers and innovators John Thackara and Rick
Poyner, and interviews with leading figures in the design world that explain how the
concept of the modular influences their work. Interspersed with visual material, the
texts reveal the many possibilities created by balancing structure with flexibility, and
seek to redefine the place of modularity in modern design history.
Burkhard Meltzer is a freelance curator who writes for magazines such as Kunstbulletin,
Frieze, and Spike. He was curator and art director at the Neue Kunsthalle St. Gallen. Tido von
Oppeln is an author and curator. He has worked on various exhibitions about design, art, and
architecture at the Museum der Dinge, Vitra Design Museum, Marta Herford, and the
MuseumsQuartier Vienna. He lives in Zurich. He is the editor, along with Burkhard Meltzer, of

New Rings500+ Designs from Around the WorldNicolas Estrada
Rings symbolize many things. They can serve as personal statements, adornments,
representations of commitment, or sentimental reminders. More than purely
decorative, the position of the ring on the hand and the way in which it is worn can
denote love, promise, rebellion, compromise, or affiliation. In the hands of the world’s
most creative jewelers they can become endlessly fascinating works of art.
This marvelously illustrated survey showcases 591 contemporary rings, created
by nearly 300 designers from around the world, divided into five sections—one for
each finger.
The rings range from traditional and decorative to conceptual and even abstract
pieces. The featured designers employ a wide variety of techniques, and an inventive
array of materials, including gold, platinum, precious stones, plastic, bones, fiber, wood,
shells, plants, and more. This revised and updated edition includes 100 new designs.
Nicolas Estrada is a jewelry designer who lives in Barcelona.

Prototyping for ArchitectsReal Buildings for the Next Generation of Digital DesignersJane Burry and Mark Burry
Prototyping is an essential part of designers’ repertoires, allowing them to test their
projects from structural, aesthetic, and technical standpoints. Prototyping for
Architects examines how architects are combining new digital design and fabrication
technologies with traditional hands-on building techniques to gain more insight into
the strengths and weaknesses of their designs.
Beginning with an introduction charting the rise of prototyping in design history,
this cutting-edge volume for students and professionals presents an extensive range
of prototyping techniques, followed by a selection of 30 projects by leading contem-
porary international architects.
Jane and Mark Burry explain how prototyping at a miniature scale helps commu-
nicate complex spatial ideas; how prototyping empowers the architect-designer to test
and prove a building’s feasibility; and how additive (3D printing) or subtractive (robotic
milling) prototyping can lead to exciting new design possibilities. A reference section,
which includes a glossary of technical terms, offers further information and clarification.
Jane Burry holds a degree in mathematics and is a registered architect. She is currently a
research fellow at RMIT’s Spatial Information Architecture Laboratory (SIAL) in Melbourne.
Mark Burry is professor and director of SIAL and founding director of RMIT’s Design Institute.
He is an international expert on the architecture of Antoni Gaudí, and is currently using digital
technology to help complete the Sagrada Família in Barcelona.

The Spirit of Indian PaintingClose Encounters with 101 Great Works 1100–1900B. N. Goswamy
Through close encounters with over a hundred carefully selected works, spanning
nearly a thousand years, and ranging from Jain manuscripts and Pahari and Mughal
miniatures to Company School paintings, B. N. Goswamy unlocks the many treasures
that lie within Indian painting. In an illuminating introduction, and as Goswamy
relates the stories behind each work and deciphers the visual vocabulary and
language of the painters, he brings to life the cultural, social, and political milieu in
which they were created. Lavishly illustrated, and combining erudition with great
storytelling, The Spirit of Indian Painting reveals the beauty of this richly varied body
of work in a new and brilliant light.
B. N. Goswamy is a leading historian on Indian art. He has taught at several universities in
India and abroad, and curated major exhibitions of Indian art at the world’s leading museums.
“Wonderful . . . A book to make both layman and connoisseur alike
realize why pre-modern Indian painting is one of the
great arts of the world.”
—Neil MacGregor
“Professor Goswamy’s book meets a long-felt need. In
all the years that I have been involved with Indian art, I

The Tale of the AxeHow the Neolithic Revolution Shaped BritainDavid Miles
Approximately 12,000 years ago, early humans in western Asia and Europe who had
been itinerant foragers, subsisting on what food they could find, slowly began
settling in one place. They farmed and domesticated animals, created new tools,
built monuments, and began preserving and storing food. What brought about this
shift? What difference did it make to the overall population? And what effects did
this Neolithic Revolution have on generations to come?
The Tale of the Axe explores the New Stone Age—named for the new types of
stone tools that appeared at that time, specifically the ground stone axe—taking
Britain as its focus. David Miles takes the reader on a journey through Neolithic
Britain by way of its ancestors, geographical neighbors, and the species from which
humans emerged before turning an eye to the future and those aspects of the
Neolithic Revolution that live on today: farming, built communities, modern man,
and much more.
David Miles is former Director of Archaeology and Chief Archaeologist at English Heritage,
and over his long career has worked to excavate and conserve some of the most important
archaeological sites in the British Isles.

A Bigger MessageConversations with David HockneyMartin Gayford
David Hockney’s exuberant work is highly praised and widely celebrated—he is
perhaps the world’s most popular living painter. But he is also something else: an
incisive and original thinker on art.
This new edition includes a revised introduction and five new chapters which cover
Hockney’s production since 2011, including preparations for the Bigger Picture exhibition
held at the Royal Academy in 2012 and the making of Hockney’s iPad drawings and plans
for the show. A difficult period followed the exhibition’s huge success, marked first by a
stroke, which left Hockney unable to speak for a long period, followed by the vandalism
of the artist’s Totem tree-trunk, and the tragic suicide of his assistant shortly thereafter.
Escaping the gloom, in spring 2013 Hockney moved back to L.A. A few months later,
Martin Gayford visited Hockney in the L.A. studio, where the fully-recovered artist was hard
at work on his Comédie humaine, a series of full-length portraits painted in the studio.
The conversations between Hockney and Gayford are punctuated by surprising and
revealing observations on other artists—Van Gogh, Vermeer, and Picasso among
them—and enlivened by shrewd insights into the contrasting social and physical
landscapes of Yorkshire, Hockney’s birthplace, and California.
Martin Gayford is the chief art critic for Bloomberg News and the author of the acclaimed
Rendez-vous with Art, along with Philippe de Montebello, and Man With a Blue Scarf: On Sitting
for a Portrait by Lucian Freud.

Turner in His TimeAndrew Wilton
Storms at sea, mountain ranges, the glories of Italy, scenes from history and legend
and the bustling life of modern Britain—the sheer range of Turner’s art, as well as the
astonishing originality of his technique in both oil and watercolor, ensure his place in
the canon of great European artists. His imagination was rooted in a keen awareness
of reality, which he demonstrated through his lifelong appetite for travel: for over
fifty years, from the 1790s until his old age in the 1840s, he made regular tours in
Britain and on the Continent, chiefly in France, Switzerland, Germany, and Italy, with
repeated visits to Venice and the Alps in his later years.
Here are more than 150 of his works, lavishly displayed and superbly reproduced.
Andrew Wilton’s text reveals a man of many secrets both professional and personal.
He draws upon a broad range of documentary sources including Turner’s own letters,
notes, and verse; recorded impressions by his contemporaries; later assessments; and
reviews of his exhibited works.
The comprehensive illustrated chronology describes his travels, exhibitions, and
projects. A list of the books in his library and an inventory of the contents of the
London house where he lived for most of his long life complete this volume, essential
to our understanding of this unique master.
Andrew Wilton was the first curator of the Clore Gallery for the Turner Collection at Tate
Britain, London, and is the author of many works on the artist.

ABZZZZ…A Bedtime AlphabetIsabel Minhós Martins and Yara Kono
From “A is for Awake” to “Zzzz…” this whimsical interactive ABC book helps children
wind down before bed and fall asleep. Prompts to ask one final question, encour-
agement to say goodbye to the sun, and details about animals and their sleep habits
make this an engaging and useful book that kids will ask for again and again. Each
page features a different letter of the alphabet: on some nights kids will make it all
the way to “Yaren” where Naru children are beginning their day instead of ending it,
while on other nights they will nod off at “Hibernate.” Young readers learn and, more
importantly, doze off, making this a particularly covetable title for children and
parents alike.
Isabel Minhós Martins was born in Lisbon, Portugal and graduated from Lisbon College of
Fine Arts with a degree in communication design. She founded, with three friends, the
publisher Planeta Tangerina. Yara Kono was born in São Paulo, Brazil, in 1972. She has worked
for Planeta Tangerina since 2004.

patterned grids printed on the pages of Grids, children are inspired to create a city
based on a grid of boxes; sketch a huge crowd of people; transform a 3-D grid into a
robot workshop; and turn simple lines into funny faces.
The book begins with drawing tips and prompts to follow, including how to draw
characters using only a few simple shapes, and facial expressions with only a few
lines. The book quickly progresses to more loosely regimented activities that
encourage children to use their imaginations. Kids can draw on grids with spirals,
spots, lines, cross-hatches, triangles, tubes, letter shapes, blogs . . . Prompts on the
page help readers to make the most of each pattern, build with colors and shapes,
use negative space to change the effect, add shading to create depth and volume,
play around with perception, and even draw optical illusions.
Jacky Bahbout is the author of many children’s books published by Thames & Hudson. She
lives in London.
