Dear sir/madam,

Percussion music is a genre that can speak to all kinds of listeners. Here comes a unique opportunity to be part of that enthralling experience. Thalam, the mega show of per-cussion art forms, showcasing the tradition of rhythm in Kerala’s social life, begins at Thiruvananthapuram on December 22 under the aegis of Vyloppilli Samskriti Bhavan. Dedicated to the fond memory of the maestro of the beats, the late Pallavoor Appu Marar, this four-day long fiesta, to be held in six venues, will be a confluence of all the percussion art forms of Kerala as well as some of the major art forms of India. Performances by the masters in the respective fields, exhibitions of percussion instruments and art forms, photo exhibition of artists, lecture demonstrations for the public and learners, seminars on various aspects of rhythm mark the fete. There will also be a fusion night on the concluding day in which some of the renowned performers of the country unleash their potential to the fullest.

Sri V. S. Achuthanandan, honorable Chief Minster of Kerala, has kindly consented to formally inaugurate the festival on 23rd December 2010 at Vyloppilli Samskriti Bhavan at 5.15 pm.

We cordially invite you to be a part of the festival and experience the splendid harmony of the beats.

Thrithaayambaka Thayam Vaka, popularly known as Thayambaka, has evolved from individual apti-tude. (ThayamVaka was the word used in the initial period.) Thayam was meant to be the thalam and Vaka was the various permutations and combinations of the thala variety. Today, the Thayambaka is played and presented in the double Eratta Thayambaka’. In the triple, Thri-Thayambaka, and in five times, Pancha-Thayambaka. Yet it has to be noted that there are absolutely no changes in the basic structure of the Thayambaka.

The Mizha or the Mizhavu is the instrument strictly used as an accompaniment for the Koothu and Koodiyattam exclusively. Initially this instrument was strictly played inside the temple. It is only recently the instrument was brought outside the walls to be played to the audience in the outer world. The first man who did this was Pyngulam Ramachakyar.

PanchavadyamThe Panchavadyam existed in varied forms and names as Panchag-hosham, Panchamukhavadyam and so on, during the period before 1930. The great artist who made this happen was Shri Annamanada Senior Parameswara Marar who was well acclaimed as the un debatable Guru Aasan of the Panchavadya Art Form. During the Thrissur Pooram Festival, the Panchavadya is the chief attraction when the Deity arrives from the Thiruvambadi Temple Matam. Shri Annamanada Parameswara Marar lead the Panchavadya with his Thimila performing to welcome the deity from the temple Matam

The Panchavadyam starts with 112 Aksharas and followed respectively by 224 and 448 Akshara kalam. It could then be followed by the individual artist deciding what time (kalam) he should follow.

Keli is a beautiful combination of the Asuravadya Chenda and the dainty swara of Maddala. Keli is of two kinds - (i) The Chenda Keli is the combination of Chenda and Maddala. (ii) The Maddala keli is a combination of more than one Maddala. Whatever might be the combination, the beauty of the sound system, coordinated and created with the Chenda, Maddalam, Edamthala and the Valam Thala Chenda produce a sweeter effect, more beautifully than any other percussion-combination.

Edakka Kacheri(Edakka Concert)

It is a difficult and challenging task to perform a Kacheri on the Edakka. Among the skin instru-ments, it is only on the Edakka that we have the Swara-Sthanas. This is a great programme, which includes all the qualities of a classical music concert. The artists perform the usual Kacheri plan -Swaras, Ragam, Keerthanas. In addition, they also perform the popular and well-loved semi classical and cine-songs to the great admiration of the people.
