The Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra (TPO)The Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra (TPO) gave its

inaugural performance at the Royal Thailand Navy Auditorium on 23rd June 2005, in a gala concert for the International Trumpet Guild Conference. Over its first 9 seasons the TPO has consistently impressed and inspired audiences with its excellent performances. Many highly regarded conductors have led the TPO including Gudni Emilsson, Claude Villaret, Alfonso Scarano, Leo Phillips, Michalis Economou, Jeannine Wagar, Dariusz Mikulski, Ligia Amadio, Terje Mikkelsen, Alkis Baltas, Prateep Suphanrojn and Jeffery Meyer.

Soloists from around the world regularly join the TPO for performances and have praised the orchestra for its growth and development in such a short period of time. Those guests have included Jens Lindemann, Eri Nakagawa, Lambis Vassiliadis, Boris Brovtsyn, Alexandros Economou, Tomas Strasil, Reinhold Friedrich, Cristina Bojin, Karina Di Virgilio, Mischa Maisky, Yoon Jin Kim, Jura Margulis, Christopher Espenschied, Dimitri Ashkenazy, Ara Malikian, Serouj Kradjian, Robyn Schulkowsky, Lucia Aliberti, Wolfram Schmitt-Leonardy, Peter Bruns, Tapalin Charoensook, Ekachai Jearakul, Shyen Lee, Aiman Musakhodzhaeva, Sek Thongsuwan, Henri Bok, and Otto Schilli among others.

The first International appearance by TPO occurred in October 2009 when the Japanese Association of Orchestras extended the invitation to perform at the Asian Orchestras Festival in the Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall. In the same year the Royal Thai Government invited TPO to play at the gala concert for the 15th ASEAN Summit held in Cha-Am in front of 10 Prime Ministers from the 10 ASEAN countries and six from China, India, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand. TPO has continued its international touring with concerts in Tokyo, Japan and Auckland, New Zealand in 2012, and Vientiane, Laos in 2013.

On September 29, 2010, TPO had the distinct honor to give a command performance for HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej and HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn at the Royal Medical College Auditorium, Siriraj Hospital. In the concert the TPO paid tribute to His Majesty’s considerable musical talent. The concert served to honor the occasion of the 37th Anniversary of a special concert that His Majesty played for students at the Royal Medical College’s auditorium on September 29, 1973.

The current 2014-2015 season is Gudni Emilsson’s tenth season as Chief Conductor of the TPO. He continues the work of attracting a loyal and appreciative following in Thailand, while helping the TPO to build a reputation for performing excellence. Its annual season schedule of more than 60 performances draws from over three centuries of orchestral repertoire as well as chamber, contemporary and specially-commissioned new music.

The TPO is proud to have the patronage of the Royal Thai Government and Mahidol University and enjoys a burgeoning multicultural tradition. The 90-member symphony orchestra is made up of musicians from more than 15 nations. The TPO has been active in recording both traditional Thai songs and new works from internationally recognized composers, and has produced 10 CDs of those works.

2014-2015 marks the tenth season for the TPO, and will be highlighted by a program expansion to over 80 concerts per year including season and special concerts, as well as a move to its new performance home, the 2,016 seat Prince Mahidol Hall on Mahidol University’s Salaya Campus. In addition, the TPO has several new projects and collaborations on the horizon including recording sessions, concerts throughout Thailand, and several international performances.

The Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra (TPO) reaches another milestone as we celebrate our tenth season!

I am excited and honored to be a witness of talented musicians creating beautiful music for the local Thai audiences as well as internationally.

The TPO’s continual growth and accolades must be accredited to Associate Professor Dr. Sugree Charoensook, Chief Conductor Mr. Gudni A. Emilsson, and their staff as these two men have shared their passion of music, creativity, and diligence with all the members of the orchestra.

This upcoming tenth season will open with grandeur as the TPO performs the hypnotic and powerful Tchaikovsky Symphony No.4 and Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No.1 performed by Kazakhstani piano virtuoso Amir Tebenikhin. In the style of TPO’s homage to the Thai culture, the orchestra will also be performing Thai traditional music.

As Chairman of the Board of Directors of TPO, I humbly thank all of you for the support you have given to TPO and I look forward to seeing all of you throughout the season of 2015. The journey toward an international standard of music performance has been at the heart of the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra’s mission since its 1st full season in 2005. Each and every season of the TPO has attempted to push closer to this ultimate goal, and the result has been an orchestra that has grown in size, performance ability, and in recognition both within Thailand and throughout the region.

The impressive 2,016-seat Prince Mahidol Hall features the latest state-of-the-art acoustic design and architecture that has made it one of the landmarks of Thailand now and into the future. TPO is proud to perform in both the Music Auditorium of the College of Music and Prince Mahidol Hall throughout the season.

The 10th TPO season will again see a mix of soloists from overseas as well as the very best young musicians Thailand has developed at home. I am sure the artistry of all the soloists featured this season will inspire you each and every concert. A mixture of internationally renowned musicians and homegrown excellence is vital for the future of classical music performance in Thailand.

We are always grateful for the support of embassies and international organizations that support TPO as we take part to celebrate and honor significance dates, such as national days or composers’ anniversaries through our programs. The TPO is very appreciative for all the generous support of our sponsors and friends.

The TPO continues to take part in national events at the invitation of the Royal Thai Government and we are delighted that they see the TPO as an asset to the country. Their support is much appreciated.

In the past seasons, TPO has been privileged to travel as artistic ambassadors to Japan, New Zealand, and Laos. More international trips will take place this season to help bring TPO into the world stage.

The desire of TPO is to be a role model for all young musicians in Thailand as they strive towards an international standard of excellence in Classical music. In this respect, TPO is working closely with the College of Music, Mahidol University in welcoming students throughout Thailand under the Youth Development through Classical Music Appreciation Scholarship every week to share the knowledge and experience of listening to classical music.

Since 2005, TPO performed more than 450 concerts and recording for 10+ CDs. This guarantees that professional orchestra in Thailand has become the real world for classical musicians. From the first season to present day, I wrote more than 300+ pieces for TPO performance, but the most honoring of my writing is arranging Thai songs for opening concert as overture because this is a chance to introduce our native Thai classical melodies to touch the world.

As a conductor, I really appreciate working with the most talented musicians in Thailand and strongest management team work in Thailand. After nine seasons, TPO performed high quality of Classical to Avant-garde and great potential for the future of orchestral music in Thailand. Every time when I conduct TPO, I am always surprised with the quality of sound that they produce because it is sounding closer to an European orchestra.

In addition, TPO performances are the link of broken chains and recalling of unity and peace in Thailand.

Over the years, the orchestra has performed many major symphonic works, premiered numerous works by Thai and international composers and even rare, challenging symphonic pieces. The orchestra collaborates with world-renown artists, as well as performs with Thailand-resident artists in many occasions. Our experiences have taught us to be the greater performers this coming year. Now, the orchestra has grown to a nationally-recognized orchestra performing in one of the Thailand’s finest concert halls – Prince Mahidol Hall which is yet another great honor for us.

Being a concertmaster is not only about leading the orchestra and playing all the great solos, but also being a person who sits in the middle and deals with any circumstances with patience and understanding.

We are very proud to be the best orchestra in Thailand and I hope you all enjoy our performances.

It is my great honor to be a Composer in Residence for Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra for the 10th Season. After moving to United States, I have had many opportunities, both in the United States and internationally, to meet and work with many well-known great musicians and conductors such as Carl St. Clair, Carlos Kalmar, Mikhail Pletnev, Osmo Vanska; and such high-standard orchestras such as the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, the Minnesota Orchestra, the Oregon Symphony Orchestra, the Pacific Symphony Orchestra, the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra. Some of my achievements, up to 2013, include many awards such as the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship, and the Barlow Prize. From many encounter with Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra in the past, I would not hesitate to say that the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra is one of the great orchestra in the world especially the mission to support music of our time. Being invited to be a composer in residence for Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra (TPO) for a second time is a great honor for me. It’s really a wonderful opportunity for me to finally have more chances to be back home in Thailand to work with great orchestra and conductors/music director of the TPO.

The world is filled with variety of cultures and we are now moving toward a period of global collaboration. With my International experience, and once hailed by Los Angeles Times: “Composer with a gift to create orchestra color”, I’m positive that my residency with the TPO would allow me to expand and create the finest orchestral experiences for the music lovers community in Salaya and surrounding areas to a wider perception with a colorful music.

I would like to thank everyone involved with the TPO for their warm welcome to me as a composer in residence. Moreover, I would like to thank all the audiences for their gracious support in helping living composers to have the freedom to create the arts. To sum up, I strongly believe that the collaboration with the TPO will reward all the fans with many exciting programs for many seasons to come.

Copland’s idealized America in Appalachian Spring helped the work become one of the most popular 20th century pieces for orchestra, drawing from American folklife for its inspiration and creating in the listener’s imagination images of vast open spaces, the drama of domestic home life, and the pioneer spirit. Prangcharoen finds deep inspiration in Eastern thought and philosophy and his music continues this exciting trajectory of imaginative expansion of orchestral sonority and color. MUSIC LOVER JUNIORThere are 2 types of Music Lover Junior card sets:

MJ01 MJ01 costs 750 baht per card set and can be used for 10 tickets (with a discount of 35 baht per seat from the usual 100 baht per seating) and has a 1 year validation.

MJ02MJ02 costs 1500 per card set and can be used for 20 tickets (same discount rate as MJ01) and also has a 1 year validation. This set also includes 2 evening concerts with a value of 200 baht. (100 baht per seat)

Terms & Conditions for Music Lover Junior Card Set• Has 1 year validation starting from purchased date.• Please show your card to obtain tickets for MUSIC@MAHIDOL programs in the normal zone for student. • The cards can not be used with other promotions.• There are no refunds or exchange for these cards.• Members of the cards must be students under the age of 25 and you need to have proof of identification when you make your purchase. Audience ParticipationAudience should be properly attired in respect for the performance and the place. No t-shirts, shorts, flip-flops, etc. allowed. Admission will be refused and tickets are non refundable.Children under the age of 5 are not allowed to the concert unless the performance is suitable for children. If there are children attending a performance, parents would be asked to kindly look after them.No food or beverages are allowed inside the hall.Smoking is not prohibited in the building.Photography, video or any type of recording device is no permitted. (Press or interested parties must request such use in advance)Please turn off all electronic devices before entering the hall.

LatecomersPlease remain seated during the performance, latecomers or those who have stepped out during the performance, are asked to remain outside until intermission.To avoid disturbance to others, conversation and unnecessary noises during performance should be kept to a minimum.
