Chopin,wasaRomantic-eraPolishcomposer.Achildprodigy,Chopingrewup

inWarsaw,completedhismusicaleducationthere,andcomposedmanyofhis

works there before leaving Poland, aged 20, less than a month before the

outbreakoftheNovember1830Uprising.

Attheageof21hesettledinParis.Duringtheremaining18yearsofhislife,he

gave only some 30 public performances, preferring the more intimate

atmosphereofthesalon;hesupportedhimselfbysellinghiscompositionsand

as a sought-afterpiano teacher.He formeda friendshipwith Franz Liszt and

was admired by many of his musical contemporaries, including Robert

Schumann.

All of Chopin's compositions include the piano; most are for solo piano,

althoughhealsowrotetwopianoconcertos,afewchamberpieces,andsome

songs to Polish lyrics. His keyboard style, which is highly individual, is often

technicallydemanding;hisownperformanceswerenotedfortheirnuanceand

sensitivity. Chopin invented the concept of instrumental ballade; his major

piano works also include sonatas, mazurkas, waltzes, nocturnes, polonaises,

études, impromptus, scherzos, and preludes. Many of these works were

published only after Chopin's death. Chopin's innovations in style, musical

form, and harmony, and his association of music with nationalism, were

influentialthroughoutthelateRomanticperiodandsince.
