36TH EDITION OF MADEIRA MUSIC FESTIVAL The harmonious development of a region must
inevitably be achieved through the availability of culture of the highest quality, which promoted the
region’s name and simultaneously brings cultural benefits to its inhabitants. Criteria of quality are essential to this availability, so that the region may earn prestige internationally and so that the development of the minds and artistic understanding of audiences may become a reality.
The Madeira Cultural Festivals must be a part of this strategy. Taking place every year and offering cultural activity of guaranteed quality, they are a highly important focus in the publicizing of the Island as a preferred destination for interested audiences. Because Madeira cannot be valued only for its landscape and its climate, but also as an important centre for prestigious events in diverse artistic genres, it is necessary to consolidate the various extant festivals, in an attempt to increase every year the number of interested attendees, whether local or from other geographical locations.
This is the 36th edition of the Madeira Music Festival. It was created initially as the Bach festival, and over the years its structure acquired various characteristics. It is recognized by the RAM and intends to continue to present programmes of the highest quality annually, thereby affirming itself as one of the most important poles of attraction on the Island within the context of classical music.
We thank all those who have made this festival possible, and hope that the present programme will be appreciated by its various audiences.

MEDIEVAL MARKET
The 10th edition of the Medieval Market, this year under the theme “500 years of Machico’s Foral”, takes place between June 5 and 7. For three days, the streets of Machico will live and recall the 16th century environment. All visitors are invited to enter a journey into the past, in a unique social and cultural atmosphere with the reconstitution of markets, crafts and products exchanged and sold at that time, and also to enjoy lots of music and dance, and recreation of some historical moments.
It’s an initiative of significant importance for our regional tourism and cultural context, reliving daily routines and experiences of locals, during the Portuguese Discoveries Period, particularly in the city of Machico.
A project organized by the “Escola Básica e Secundária de Machico” and the city’s municipality, which always includes different resident cultural associations and other educational and social institutions.
