RABBI’S REFLECTIONS On Ma’oz Tzur:

History, Melody, and Meaning

Ma’oz Tzur is one of the most well-known hymns. Jews knew this melody as a German folk song as early as 1450, and sang it to the words Ma’oz Tzur by 1744 (Judas Elias of Hanover, but it likely happened in the 1500s.) (Repeating the last stanza only started recently.) We understand why they

paired well: the music is hopeful and confident, ma-jestic and daring, stirring and bright. We can imagine the Maccabees marching to battle. Mordekhai wrote the poem, since stanzas’ 1-5 initial letters spell his name. Various estimates place him anywhere from the 11th century Crusades into the 13th century. The now rarely-printed sixth stanza, containing the acronym hazak (“strength,” appended to the poet’s name wishing long life,) was likely add-ed in the 16th or 17th century. The English, loose version by Marcus Mordechai Jastrow and Gustav G. Gothelf, appearing in the 19th century Union Hym-nal, is based on a German one by Leopold Stein.

Purim 9

Temple Israel of Riverhead 2 January/February 2017

(Rabbi—continued from page 1)

Thematically, God unfailingly redeems us. Each stanza is four lines of two equal halves of six long syllables. The half line rhyme scheme is AB, AB, BB, CB. The verbs use the imperfect tense; i.e., past ac-tions and mind-states are not completed and continue to happen. The setting is the Mac-cabees celebrating. Written in the first per-son, the author personifies the people Isra-el. Stanza 1 expresses our messianic hope to restore the Temple and its worship so we can sing songs of praise at the altar’s dedi-cation, both with and like the Maccabees. Stanzas 2-5 list four examples, in chrono-logical order, where we suffered and God redeemed us. First is slavery in Egypt, fol-lowed by the Exodus and the Egyptian army’s drowning. Next is Babylonian exile followed by the Return to Zion. Third is Purim; Mordekhai saves us from Haman, and hangs him and his sons. Fourth is the Hanukkah story; the Hasmoneans (Maccabees) defeat the Greeks (Seleucids and King Antiochus IV Epiphanies in now- Syria,) and sing in the newly rededicated Temple, where a small oil flask miraculous-ly lasts eight days. In stanza 6, we hope God speedily will avenge us and bring sal-vation from Christians (referring to some inter-Christian struggle where Jews suf-fered.) Most books omit this stanza, and of-ten we do not sing it for the sake of neigh-borly peace. Jastrow and Gottheil’s English version kept the deliverance theme in the form of freedom, lessened the ideas of vengeance, Temple service, and return from exile, diminished military might, and en-couraged reliance on God. Stanza 6's history update questions the song’s theology. If God redeemed us in the past, why were earlier ones brief and we still await the messianic age? Professor Is-

mar Schorsch answers based on Midrash Tehillim on Psalm 31. Ma’oz Tzur’s opening is based on Psalm 31:2, “I seek refuge in You, O Lord; may I never be disappointed; as You are righteous, res-cue me.” On “never,” it asks how we reconcile the fact of earlier redemptions and the promise of redemption with life’s harsh reality; why, if redemption is for-ever, do we still suffer? God answers that previous redemptions were effected through humans, like Moses and kings, although God influenced events. Schorsch argues, the sixth stanza tells us that previous human-helped redemptions are not true ones and must be of limited duration. This last one situation, under Christian rule, only God directly can end. Schorsch writes, the midrash “confront[s] the harsh divergence between history and theology.” He concludes, “taken to-gether, the two strata of Maoz Zur blend into a liturgical reflection on Jewish his-tory–the precariousness of minority ex-istence, the reality of Divine concern, the consolation of collective memory, and the rarity of true messianism.” He fur-ther warns us not to overemphasize the human role in the Hanukkah story, for deliverance was only temporary. Only when God brings the messiah will it be-come permanent. Without spelling it out, he draws a parallel to politics. Just as the Maccabees achieved only a limited re-demption, he warns that, “messianism, properly understood, leads to political restraint.” Ma’oz Tzur tells us to limit what we see in the interaction of theolo-gy and history, for only God brings ulti-mate redemption. Happy Hanukkah.

Kol Nidre Appeal 5777

We continue to need our membership and friends to preserve the health and well-being of our beloved temple. It is a tradition in congregations to establish a Kol Nidre Appeal Fund; at Temple Is-rael this fund is vital to help supplement the dues and thus cover our operating expenses. Therefore, we ask each one of you, if you have not already donated, to be as generous as possible, in order that our temple may continue to meet the growing needs of the Jewish community.

Please forward your check, payable to Temple Israel Kol Nidre Fund, to: Temple Israel of Riverhead, P.O. Box 1531, Riverhead, NY 11901. You can also pay online using PayPal.
