25th Sunday after Pentecost In holy baptism God makes saints out of sinners. In holy communion God forgives the sins of all the saints. In the assembly today we give thanks for all the saints “who from their labors rest,” who have fought the good fight, who have gained the crown. In the same breath we petition our God for the strength to hear and to heed the admonitions of the Lord Jesus in today’s gospel. Recalling that we have been sealed by the Spirit and sustained by the Savior’s body and blood, we keep on keeping on as God gives us breath, to the praise of God’s glory.

GATHERING P: Presiding Minister L: Lector C: Congregation

WELCOME and ANNOUNCEMENTS

CONFESSSION AND FORGIVENESS

A: In the name of God the Father of glory; in the name of God the ☩ Son, our Redeemer; in the name of God the holy and life-giving Spirit. C: Amen. A: The Sun of righteousness shall rise with shining beams of healing. Let us gather under the wings of God’s mercy.

Silence is kept for reflection.

A: Gracious God, C: we acknowledge that we are sinners and we confess our sins— those known to us that burden our hearts, and those unknown to us but seen by you. We know that before you nothing remains hidden, and in you everything is revealed. Free us from the slavery of sin; liberate us from the bondage of guilt; and work in us that which is pleasing in your sight; for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A: With a heart full of mercy and compassion, God saves us and ☩ forgives us all our sins. Christ, the dawn from on high, shines upon us and by the light of the Holy Spirit guides our feet into the way of peace. C: Amen.

C: Praise the Lord! O praise the name of the Lord!

REMEMBRANCE OF ALL SAINTS P: Let us remember all the saints before God.

Lighting the Candles of the Saints

P: We praise and bless you, O holy Trinity. You have taught your church that it is an ageless communion of saints. We thank you for gathering those who faithfully waited in hope for the redemption you promised, and now for adding us who celebrate the love of your Christ for the redemption of the world.

Prepare a place for us among those who are already with you. Help us remember them as an encouragement to saintly living, exciting us to love, in anticipation of an eternal reunion. C: Amen.

GATHERING SONG For All the Saints ELW # 422 VS. 1-3, 7 Verse 1: For all the saints who from their labors rest, who thee by faith before the world confessed, thy name, O Jesus, be forever blest. Alleluia! Alleluia!

Verse 2: Thou wast their rock, their fortress, and their might; thou, Lord, their captain in the well-fought fight; thou, in the darkness drear, their one true light. Alleluia! Alleluia!

4

Verse 3: Oh, blest communion, fellowship divine, we feebly struggle, they in glory shine; yet all are one in thee, for all are thine. Alleluia! Alleluia!

Verse 7: From earth's wide bounds, from ocean's farthest coast, through gates of pearl streams in the countless host, singing to Father, Son, and Holy Ghost: Alleluia! Alleluia! GREETING P: The grace of our Lord, Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C: And also with you.

PRAYER OF THE DAY P: Almighty God, you have knit your people together in one communion in the mystical body of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. C: Grant us grace to follow your blessed saints in lives of faith and commitment,

and to know the inexpressible joys you have prepared for those who love you, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

The congregation is seated.

WORD JOB 19:23-27a A reading from Job, the 19thchapter. 23“O that my words were written down! O that they were inscribed in a book! 24 O that with an iron pen and with lead they were engraved on a rock forever! 25 For I know that my Redeemer lives, and that at the last he will stand upon the earth; 26 and after my skin has been thus destroyed, then in my flesh I shall see God, 27awhom I shall see on my side, and my eyes shall behold, and not another.”

Word of God, word of life. C: Thanks be to God.

PSALM 17:1-9 L: Psalm 17 will be read responsively by full verse. 1Hear a just cause, O Lord; give heed to my cry; listen to my prayer, which does not come from lying lips. C: 2Let my vindication come forth from your presence; let your eyes be fixed on justice. L: 3Examine my heart, visit me by night, melt me down; you will find no impurity in me. C: 4I have not regarded what others do; at the word of your lips I have avoided the ways of the violent. L: 5My footsteps hold fast to your well-worn path; and my feet do not slip. C: 6I call upon you, O God, for you will answer me; incline your ear to me and hear my words. L: 7Show me your marvelous lovingkindness, O Savior of those who take refuge at your right hand from those who rise against them.

8

C: 8Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me under the shadow of your wings, L: 9from the wicked who assault me, from my deadly enemies who surround me.

EPHESIANS 1:11-23 A reading from Paul’s second letter to Ephesians the 1st Chapter. 11In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will, 12so that we, who were the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. 13In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; 14this is the pledge of our inheritance toward redemption as God’s own people, to the praise of his glory. 15I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, and for this reason 16I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers. 17I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, 18so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, 19and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe, according to the working of his great power. 20God put this power to work in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly plac-es, 21far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the age to come. 22And he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all things for the church, 23which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all. Word of God, word of life. C: Thanks be to God.

LUKE 20:27-38 The Gospel according to Luke, the 20th chapter. C: Glory to you, O Lord. 27Some Sadducees, those who say there is no resurrection, came to [Jesus] 28and asked him a question, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies, leaving a wife but no children, the man shall marry the widow and raise up chil-dren for his brother. 29Now there were seven brothers; the first married, and died childless; 30then the second 31and the third married her, and so in the same way all seven died childless. 32Finally the woman also died. 33In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife will the woman be? For the seven had married her.” 34Jesus said to them, “Those who belong to this age marry and are given in mar-riage; 35but those who are considered worthy of a place in that age and in the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage. 36Indeed they cannot die anymore, because they are like angels and are children of God, being children of the resurrection. 37And the fact that the dead are raised Moses himself showed, in the story about the bush, where he speaks of the Lord as the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. 38Now he is God not of the dead, but of the living; for to him all of them are alive.” The Word of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ.

SERMON

SONG OF THE DAY I Know that My Redeemer Lives! ELW # 619 vs. 1-2, 4, 8

Verse 1: I know that my Redeemer lives! What comfort this sweet sentence gives! He lives, he lives, who once was dead; he lives, my ever-living head!

Verse 2: He lives triumphant from the grave; he lives eternally to save; he lives exalted, throned above; he lives to rule his church in love.

Verse 4: He lives to silence all my fears; he lives to wipe away my tears; he lives to calm my troubled heart; he lives all blessings to impart.

10

Verse 8: He lives, all glory to his name! He lives, my Savior, still the same; what joy this blest assurance gives: I know that my Redeemer lives!

RESPONSE TO THE WORD

BIBLES FOR THREE YEAR OLDS A: Will all three year old youth that are receiving Bibles today and their parents please come forward at this time. P: Today you receive the Word of God. Learn its stories and study its words. A: Its stories belong to us all, and these words speak to us all. P: They tell us who we are. A: They tell us that we belong to one another, for we are the people of God.

Presentation of Bibles

A: Let us pray: Receive these Bibles with your hands, your hearts, and your minds. C: We rejoice in this step in your journey with God. We pray God will guide you, your family, and us as you use this Holy Bible in your home, in your Sunday school classes, and in our worship. We will learn together and grow in our love for God's Word. APOSTLES’ CREED P: Living together in trust and hope we confess our faith. C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen

WORDS OF INSTITUTION

P: In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people. Do this for the remembrance of me.

For as often as we eat of this bread and drink of this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. C: Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

LORD’S PRAYER P: Lord, remember us in your kingdom and teach us to pray: C: Our Father, who art in heaven hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. All Saints' Day is a universal festival of the Church. This festival day directs our attention to the richness of Christian history and the varied experiences of the grace of God by lifting up the lives of the saints. The cus-tom of commemorating all the martyrs of the Church on a single day goes back at least to the third century. All Saints' Day (Nov. 1) celebrates not only the martyrs and saints, but all the people of God, living and dead, who together form the mystical body of Christ. Below are the names of the members of American Lutheran Church who have died since All Saints' Day last year. We remember them in our prayers today, and we give thanks for their lives…
