El Bautismo del Señor

“Cuando se lava el Salvador, se purifica toda el agua necesaria para nuestro bautismo y queda limpia la fuente, para que pueda luego administrarse a los pueblos que habían de

venir a la gracia de aquel baño”, dijo San Máximo de Turín en el Siglo V al referirse al Bautismo del Señor que la Iglesia celebra hoy.

Con el Bautismo del Señor se concluye la temporada de Navidad y la Iglesia nos invita a mirar la humildad de Jesús que se convierte en una epifanía (manifestación) de la Santísima Trinidad.

“Juan está bautizando, y Cristo se acerca; tal vez para santificar al mismo por quien va a ser bautizado; y sin duda para sepultar en las aguas a todo el viejo Adán, santificando el Jordán antes de nosotros y por nuestra causa; y así, el Señor, que era espíritu y carne, nos consagra mediante el Espíritu y el agua”, manifestó San Gregorio Nacianceno en uno de sus sermones.

“También el Espíritu da testimonio de la divinidad, acudiendo en favor de quien es su semejante; y la voz desciende del cielo, pues del cielo procede precisamente Aquel de quien se daba testimonio”, añadió el Santo.

The Baptism of the Lord "When the Savior is washed, all the water necessary for our baptism is purified and the source is cleansed, so that it can then be administered to the peoples who were to come to the grace of that bath," said Saint Maximus of Turin in the Century V referring to the Baptism of the Lord that the Church celebrates today. With the Baptism of the Lord the Christmas season is concluded and the Church invites us to look at the humility of Jesus that becomes an epiphany (manifestation) of the Most Holy Trinity. "John is baptizing, and Christ is coming; perhaps to sanctify him for who is going to be baptized; and doubtless to bury in the waters all the old Adam, sanctifying the Jordan before us and for our sake; and so, the Lord, who was spirit and flesh, consecrates us through the Spirit and water, "said St. Gregory Nazianzen in one of his sermons. "The Spirit also bears witness to the divinity, appearing in favor of his fellow man; and the voice descends from heaven, because from heaven comes precisely He who was witnessed, "added the Saint.


La Fiesta del Bautismo del Señor IS 42: 1-4, 6-7; PS 29: 1-4, 9-10; HECHOS 10: 34-38; MT 3: 13-17 Hoy marca el final de la temporada navideña, pero antes de regresar al Tiempo Ordinario, tenemos una gran fiesta más para celebrar: El Bautismo del Señor. La fiesta de hoy es una oportunidad perfecta para considerar los privilegios y responsabilidades que todos compartimos como mayordomos cristianos en virtud de nuestro propio bautismo. En el momento de nuestro bautismo nos convertimos en hijos e hijas adoptados de Dios, miembros de su santa Iglesia católica. Aunque es posible que no nos hayamos dado cuenta, el momento de nuestro Bautismo es también el momento en que nos convertimos en mayordomos cristianos, discípulos de Jesucristo, encargados de la tarea de seguir Sus pasos día a día y compartir el mensaje del Evangelio con todos los que nos rodean. En nuestra segunda lectura de los Hechos de los Apóstoles, San Pedro nos da una idea de la persona de Jesús que debemos imitar. "Él hizo el bien y sanó a todos los oprimidos por el diablo, porque Dios estaba con él". Debemos vivir nuestras vidas como Jesús, buscando hacer el bien a todos los que encontramos; no solo aquellos en nuestro círculo íntimo de familiares y amigos, sino todos en nuestra comunidad ya que el Padre nos ama a todos y Jesús buscó a todos con su mensaje salvador. En el pasaje evangélico de Mateo, vemos otro aspecto más de Jesús en acción, esta vez mientras se encuentra humildemente ante Juan para ser bautizado por él. Qué humildad y qué voluntad de unirnos a nosotros, nuestro Señor demuestra con este acto. No podemos hacer menos mientras vivimos nuestra vida diaria como sus discípulos. Y cuando nos esforcemos con todas nuestras fuerzas para vivir nuestro llamado bautismal a la mayordomía cristiana, experimentaremos el profundo honor de saber que también nosotros somos los hijos e hijas "amados" de Dios con quienes Él está satisfecho. "

The Feast of the Baptism of the Lord

IS 42:1-4, 6-7; PS 29: 1-4, 9-10;ACTS 10:34-38; MT 3:13-17

Today marks the close of the Christmas season, but before we return to Ordinary Time, we have one more great feast to celebrate — The Baptism of the Lord. Today’s feast is a perfect opportunity to consider the privileges and responsibilities we all share as Christian stewards by virtue of our own Baptism. At the moment of our Baptism we became adopted sons and daughters of God, members of his holy, Catholic Church. Though we may not have realized it, the moment of our Baptism is also the moment we become Christian stewards, disciples of Jesus Christ, tasked with the work of following in His footsteps day by day and sharing the Gospel message with all those around us. In our second reading from the Acts of the Apostles, St. Peter gives us a glimpse of the person of Jesus we should imitate. “He went about doing good and healing all those oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.” We must live our lives like Jesus, seeking to do good to everyone we encounter; not just those in our inner circle of family and friends, but everyone in our community since the Father loves us all and Jesus sought out everyone with His saving message. In the Gospel passage from Matthew, we see yet another aspect of Jesus in action, this time as he humbly stands before John to be baptized by him. What humility and what willingness to unite Himself to us our Lord demonstrates by this act. We can do no less as we live out our daily lives as his disciples. And when we do strive with all our might to live out our Baptismal call to Christian stewardship, we will experience the deep honor of knowing that our we, too, are God’s “beloved” sons and daughters “with whom He is well-pleased.”

MEDITACIÓN EVANGÉLICO - ENTENDIMIENTO MÁS PROFUNDO DE LA ESCRITURA La Navidad termina con la Fiesta en honor del Bautismo del Señor; es otra manifestación de Dios por medio de su Hijo. Ahora el profeta Isaías nos muestra al Siervo de Dios en quien se complace: “Miren a mi siervo, a quien sostengo, a mi elegido, en quien tengo mis complacencias. En él he puesto mi espíritu para que haga brillar la justicia sobre las naciones.” No queda más que agradecer el inmenso amor de Dios por nosotros. ¿Como no apreciar el ser hijos/hijas de Dios por el bautismo? Desde que nos bautizaron, sea pequeño o grande, Dios espera que al menos estemos seguros de que tenemos un Padre amoroso y compasivo, que se alegra con nosotros. La lectura del Libro de los Hechos de los Apóstoles ayuda a comprender que “Dios no hace distinción de personas, sino que acepta al que… practica la justicia.” Está Fiesta es similar a Pentecostés, pero, en otra forma de manifestación del Espíritu Santo. Juan, lo explica claramente cuando dice: “Es cierto que yo bautizo con agua, pero ya viene otro más poderoso que yo, a quien no merezco desatarle las correas de sus sandalias. El los bautizará con el Espíritu Santo y con fuego.” Bien, ahora cabe la pregunta para reflexión personal: ¿Qué acciones hago para complacer a Dios? ¿Hay fuego en mi corazón de tal manera que arde en buenas obras? Fijémonos en la humildad de Juan Bautista; el reconocio que su ministerio tenía que disminuir para que el ministerio de Jesús brillara y se expandiera. ¿Crees tú que los lideres actuales en las parroquias hacen lo mismo que Juan? VIVIR LA LITURGIA - INSPIRACIÓN DE LA SEMANA El Bautismo de Jesús es similar en propósito al nuestro. Así como Jesús se distinguió como el Hijo amado en quien Dios está complacido, así mismo, nosotros también. Compartimos ese mismo favor especial con Dios y tenemos una relación íntima con Él. ¿Esta realidad cambia lo que sentimos por nosotros mismos? Ciertamente lo hace. El bautismo nos cambia para siempre y nos llama a los ministerios de misericordia y humildad. Dios nos ha formado a todos en el vientre de nuestra madre y nos pide que seamos una luz para todas las personas. Llevamos esta luz con humildad, ya que sabemos quién tiene un derecho sobre nosotros y a quién pertenecemos. Entonces estamos llamados a vivir nuestras vidas imitando a Cristo y nos convertimos en recipientes de misericordia encarnados. Nuestro mundo necesita ser tocado por la compasión y solo nosotros podemos completar la tarea. GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE The Catechism of the Catholic Church gives four reasons for the Incarnation, why God became man in Jesus Christ. The third reason is “to be our model of holiness.” All of Jesus’ words and actions model for us what we ought to do. He also shows us how we’re meant to be. Jesus’ baptism ought to remind us of our own baptism and of the importance of baptism in the Christian life. The Baptism of the Lord reminds us of our Trinitarian identity. When we are baptized, we stand in solidarity with Christ, bathed in the waters he sanctified. There, the Father proclaims our adoption into the family of God. “‘This is my beloved son [this is my beloved daughter], with whom I am well pleased.’” And the Spirit, too, descends. We are filled with the Spirit’s grace and power to continue Christ’s mission on earth. We received these gifts in the sacrament, and they continue to dwell within us through sanctifying grace. We can — and should — invite God to stir up these graces of our baptism and consider them in our own lives. Does Christ feel like a distant relative two thousand years in the past? Or do you see him as someone who can be encountered here and now? Ask yourself where you find your sense of dignity and worth. Do you still search for it in success, social status, and selfish pursuits? Or are you able to rest in being a beloved child of God? Remember, baptism gives us a call and a charge to change the world. Do you pray for the Holy Spirit to guide you? Or are you so focused on your own life that you miss the mission? This week, let’s do as Jesus did. Let’s live in our baptism! LIVE THE LITURGY - INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK The Baptism of Jesus is similar in purpose to our own. As Jesus was distinguished as the beloved Son in whom God is well pleased, so, too, are we. We share that same special favor with God and are brought into an intimate relationship with Him. Does this reality change how we feel about ourselves? It certainly does. Baptism forever changes us and calls us to the ministries of mercy and humility. God has formed each of us in our mother’s womb and asks us to be a light for all people. We carry this light humbly as we know who ultimately has a claim on us and to whom we belong. We then are called to live our lives in imitation of Christ and be-come incarnate vessels of mercy. Our world needs to be touched by compassion and only we can complete the task. QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK - WE INVITE TO ALL PARISHIONERS TO REFLECT AND RESPOND TO SCRIPTURE First Reading Today’s reading is often called one of Isaiah’s “servant of the Lord” poems. According to Isaiah, the Lord’s servant “shall bring forth justice to the nations.” What do you think this type of justice looks like? Second Reading Peter came to the insight that God “shows no partiality” to those who are baptized and believe in Jesus. Why does this message remain challenging to many believers today? ¿Crees que Dios estaba orgulloso de Su hijo, Jesús?

Sé que lo estaba pues la Biblia nos lo dice. La Biblia dice que cuando Jesús fue bautizado, se escuchó una voz del cielo que decía: "Éste es mi Hijo amado; estoy muy complacido con él."

¿Por qué crees que Dios estaba complacido con Su hijo?

Creo que una razón por la cual Dios estaba orgulloso de su Hijo nos la señala la Biblia cuando dice que " Jesús siguió creciendo en sabiduría y estatura, y cada vez más gozaba del favor de Dios y de toda la gente." (Lucas 2:52). El ver que un hijo crece en madurez y en sabiduría hace a un padre orgulloso de su hijo. Y, desde luego, un padre siempre está orgulloso cuando su hijo es aceptado, querido y respetado por otras personas Creo que la razón principal por la cual Dios estaba orgulloso de Jesús es que Jesús siempre hacía lo que su Padre le enviaba a hacer. ¿Haces tú siempre lo que tu padre te pide que hagas? Dudo que alguno de nosotros pueda contestar esa pregunta con un "sí", pero Jesús podía. Jesús dijo: "Porque he bajado del cielo no para hacer mi voluntad sino la del que me envió" (Juan 6:38). Eso haría sentir orgulloso al Padre, ¿no es así?

¿No te gustaría ser la clase de niño que cuando Dios mirara desde el cielo, como hizo con Jesús, pudiera decir: "Mi niño, estoy orgulloso de ti?" Desearía que fuera así y todos los días trato de ser de esa manera, (ser más como Jesús) sabiendo que Dios me ama y está presto a ayudarme a ser la clase de persona que desea que yo sea.

Querido Señor, ayúdanos el ser más como Jesús para que seamos la clase de hijo del cual tú te sientas orgulloso. En el nombre de Jesús oramos. Amén.
