First of all, I found my first weekend here in the parish a great experience as so many of you came and spoke to me before and after the Masses where I had been. It was good to see so much energy and enthusiasm directed towards this ministry of hospitality. There is so much here that we can build upon to ensure that our Communities continue to grow this important ministry. All of us, by virtue of our own call through Baptism are called to be people of welcome and hospitality. There are some among us who exercise the ministry of Reader, proclaiming the Word of God for the Community, others exercise the extra-ordinary Ministry of Communion feeding with the Eucharist those who come to the Table, and others still bring music and song to enliven our Community. All of these ministries are important to the life of our Community, as well as those who prepare our Church, those who take up the Collection, and finally those who close the doors and windows afterwards. Now not all of us may be able to undertake these ministries within the Community, but ‘ALL OF US,’ yes, ‘ALL OF US’ even those who stand at the front door of the church to protect us during the Mass, we are called to the exercise the ministry of hospitality. We say hello to one another. We welcome each other, and we endeavour to ensure that all who come to us feel at home with us. That is the MINISTRY OF WELCOME AND HOSPITALITY, and it sits at the feet of all who choose to be Disciples of Jesus Christ. (That’s you and me.) Let’s now continue this important ministry with one another. God bless, Fr John

LEARNING TO LAMENT. This weekend in his Lenten Pastoral letter to us , Archbishop Mark has spoken of the need for us to focus upon Lamentation, a strong scriptural image of being reconciled to God. Using the words of the prophet Isaiah, ’Come back to me with all your heart,’ the Archbishop is inviting us to take seriously this Season of Lent, preparing ourselves for the journey into that great Easter event, that would bring salvation to our world. We have the opportunity to prepare ourselves over these six weeks of lent, by a focus upon prayer, on fasting, and giving of our own treasure that others may benefit from our generosity. Lent is now upon us and it is up to each of us to choose how we prepare ourselves to enter into this Journey of encounter with our God. Learning to lament, is just the beginning.

Fifties Plus Group

Second Sunday In Lent~ Year A

WEEK 1 4TH – 5TH MARCH

Dinia from the Philippines, Short Story

Dinia’s story is a story of healing, through her own skill and perseverance, and through support from a Caritas-Australia funded program. Living in the Philippines, she struggled daily with poverty in a country with many vulnerable communities. People living in rural and coastal areas have very littleaccess to basic services. They face extreme weather events, environmental degradation and the effects of internal conflict and have little hope of a sustainable income. For Dinia, the untimely death of her husband meant an end to his small income and a greater struggle to feed and educate her children. She struggled alone, facing a future without hope, until her community encouraged her to participate in the Socio Pastoral Action Center Foundation Inc. (SPACFI) program supported by Caritas Australia. SPACFI’s Integrated Community Development Program helped her develop diverse ways to gain a sustainable livelihood, continue to send her children to school and contribute to her community. The program foregrounds the need to work together for the common good, awakening Dinia’s innate generosity and leadership qualities. She was able to learn about organic farming, managing livestock, and starting a small business. Now she has an integral role in her community, a sustainable livelihood, and a brighter future for her children. “My life is much better now. It is much easier,” she says.

Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable Adults Prevention and Protection Policy. In 2014, Archbishop Mark launched the new Safe-guarding Children and Vulnerable Adults Prevision and Protection Policy. The central message of the Policy is grounded in the policy statement: The Archdiocese of Brisbane holds that children, young people and vulnerable adults are a gift from God with an intrinsic right to dignity of life, respect and security from physical and emotional harm. They are to be treasured, nurtured and safeguarded by all. This means that everyone in the church must ensure that the fundamental rights of children, young people and vulnerable adults are respected. This will be achieved through the development of respectful relationships and a commitment to safety, embracing appropriate boundaries, behaviours and practices, in accordance with the Archdiocesan Code of Ethical Be-haviour and adherence to legislative imperatives of the State. To meet this commitment, our parish will be required to fulfil a number of compliance matters. Some of these have already been put in place; however your support is needed to ensure that our Parish meets all

requirements of the policy implementation.
