JOHN I DENT CUPPREMIER DIVISIONROUND 13 PREVIEW

What a weekend it was for club rugby with two absolute nail biters in round 12. The results from last weekend demonstrate the tightness of the competition and almost declares that these final weeks are not to be missed with finals spot on the line weekend after weekend. Round 13 is no different as all three fixture will have significant impact ladders and clubs chances.

Tuggeranong and Gungahlin clash for the third time this year and those matches have not failed to live up to their expectations. Vikings have gotten the better of the Eagles on both occasions this season however both teams are in form with Tuggeranong not having lost since round 5 and Gungahlin having won three of their last four matches. Last weekend Tuggeranong faced a daunting task of taking on Queanbeyan at Queanbeyan on their Old Boys Day. It was Tuggeranong who came out of the blocks firing, but in true Queanbeyan fashion they came home with a wet sail to take a slim 13-12 lead in the dying moments. For Tuggeranong though, they were not done and managed to secure a timely penalty in front of the post to nail home a penalty kick and securing an important win. While Tuggeranong sit atop of the ladder this match against Gungahlin won’t be an easy task. The Eagles ran in another four try to secure another bonus point win 27-0. The Eagles have made no changes to the side and if they were to come away with a win, one it will give them and Queanbeyan a potential shot at the minor premiership and two, send a message that this competition is up for grabs. Tuggeranong have made a handful of changes to the side that took on Queanbeyan, most notably losing Josh Hitchens and Joe Powell. While they are big losses they welcome back Isaac Thompson to the run on side after a lengthy period on the sideline.

In the match for the Owen Brown Memorial Cup, Easts will be at home aim to secure the cup for the first time since its creation. Easts had a less than favorable day at the office against the Eagles, but certainly will have some fighting spirit left especially for this fixture. With nothing to lose, Easts will certainly look to attack and with a new 9 and 10 combination, they certainly will test the Uni Norths. The Owls can consider themselves lucky while also unlucky after finishing the game against Royals with a 10 all draw. The Owls led 5 – 0 before Royals hit back with 10 unanswered points to lead 10-5 with time almost up. A scrum penalty to the Owls in the last play of the game allowed the Owls to pick and driving inches from the line before a pin point pass by scrum half Lachie Creighton saw the Owls score in the corner to level it up. Unfortunately the kick from the side line missed and the score remained locked. The result keeps Owls and now Wests finals chance alive just but the Owls must now essentially win every game and at least one or two of them with a bonus point.

Like Uni Norths, Wests are in the position where they must win to have any chance to making it into the finals. Wests are now starting to find some serious form and after only just going down to Queanbeyan previously and welcoming back Seb Lorraway and Eli Sinoti, the Lions will be a dangerous side. Queanbeyan after their heart breaking loss know there is no time to dwindle on the past and need to do the next job that is at hand an ensure they finish in the top two. Any slip us could prove costly so they need to be on their game. The inclusion of Sokai Tai will add to a huge forward pack which loves to dominant the contact whether it be carrying the ball or making a tackle. A win by the Whites will almost end the Lions chances of finals and depending on result generate a gap between them and Gungahlin.

MATCH PREVIEWThe Owls put together one of their better performance in 2nd grade with a strong win over Royals to keep their finals chances alive. The Owls finished the game off strongly to deny Royals a bonus point while also gaining one themselves. In colts, Uni put on a spirited effort to lead Royals early, but Royals showed there class to run away with a bonus point victory. Easts were unable to prevent strong performance from Gungahlin in both grades, going down comfortably. Uni Norths were far too strong when these two met previously in 2nd grade, while colts was a nail bitter.

MATCH FACTSOnly 6 points separated these two in their previous round 10 encounter. The last time Queanbeyan played Wests at Jamison in 2015, Queanbeyan came away with a dramatic win thanks to a second penalty kick attempt right on full time by Mitch Douch. Queanbeyan missed an opportunity in the dying stages before a deliberate infringement by Wests gave Queanbeyan a second chance.

Depending on results this weekend, a win may almost ensure they receive that honor. Wests fresh from the bye will be looking to snap a two game losing streak. The colts fixture is huge is respect to position on the table. Queanbeyan have shown their form, while have lost two in a row. Whoever losing this game will have to work hard to get back into the top 4, however Queanbeyan do have a bye in hand.

MATCH PREVIEWThese fixtures are huge in both grades in particular 2nd grade. Tuggeranong lead Gungahlin by 1 competition point and both clubs are one a piece this season in victories against each other. Vikings were unable to spoil Queanbeyan’s day in 2nd grade going down 18-7 last weekend. Colts on the other hand, did just enough to hand Queanbeyan a defeat and increase their gap on Gungahlin. Gungahlin have not defeated Tuggeranong in colts this season however may cause an upset. Both fixtures are expected to tight so watch for senior players to take control of these games.

FIRST DIVISION COMPETITION

Thanks to the results in last weekend fixtures the races for the finals has become a whole lot more interesting in 1st Division 1st Grade. The top four is evenly spread between Premier Clubs and Monaro clubs, however 5th – 7th are all premier clubs locked on 35 competition points. While 2nd grade, the premier clubs have the dominance in the top four with RMC and Young not far off and could potentially sneak in depending on results. Results from Round 12 saw Royals and Uni Norths battle out a 22 all draw with Royals coming from behind to snare 3 competition points thanks to scoring 4 tries in 1st grade. 2nd grade on the other hand, Royals were far too classy and the bonus point win has them in the top four. Queanbeyan edged out Tuggeranong is 1st grade to now generate a very important gap between 4th

and 5th while Vikings got one back in 4th grade winning 26-7. The big winners of round 12 were Gungahlin who thrashed Easts 125-0. Full credit to Easts who while down numbers continually fronted up for the whole match. RMC were able to keep their chances alive defeating the Eagles 33-7. Goulburn and ADFA in horrid condition split the points, as ADFA dominated 2nd grade and the Dirty Reds coming away with a hard fought but crucial bonus point win 26-10. Wests’s 2nd grade had the weekend off with Cooma forfeiting due to numbers, but in 1st grade certainly put up a fight going down to the Lions 24-14. In the final fixtures, both Hall and Young split the points as the Bushrangers continue

their near perfect season with a 48-0 win and the Yabbies kept their slim 2nd grade finals chances alive. Round 13’s big clashes on offer are Wests and Queanbeyan at Wests, Gungahlin and Tuggeranong in particular 1st Grade and Royals v Young in 2nd grade. Uni North will travel to Griffith and Portsea Oval to take on Easts/RMC, Hall will get on the bus to travel halfway to the snow to clash with Cooma and finally Goulburn and ADFA will do battle again at ADFA.

2016 WOMENS DIVISION

This weekend is a competition bye for the Women’s Division with the ACT Women’s 15’s participating the National Championships in Sydney. Last weekend there were only the two matches played with Uni Norths taking on Royals while Tuggeranong versed ADFA for double points. Uni Norths knocked off the reigning premiers 18-5 in thanks to an impressive defensive effort. Tuggeranong on the other hand secured an important bonus point which has put them on top of the ladder due to the game being played for double points.

At the National Champions the ACT Women’s will play three games before the finals. Essentially the girls will have to win all three games in hope of playing off for the title which the narrowly missed out on in 2015 against Sydney. On Friday 24th ACT will take on South Australia and NSW Country before clashing with heavy weights Queensland on Saturday 25th. The finals will take place on the Sunday in the format of the two pool when 1 v 1, 2 v 2 etc. he girls preparation in the lead up to the tournament has been very tough taking on Victoria and NSW Country two weeks prior to the championships along with countless training sessions during the week and on the weekends.

With clubs now having either four or five games left in the season positions on the ladder are still up for the grabs. The battle at the top is tight, while a place in the Cup finals could be determined this weekend with Jindbayne taking on Boorowa at Boorowa. Both sides are locked on equally competition points and have had similar results across the board. Boorowa were defeated in a classic wet weather match by Crookwell 25-17. If the Goldies secured a competition points they would have been ahead of Jindabyne on the ladder due to the Bushpigs going down to Taralga comfortably. Taralga’s bonus point win has those two points’ clears of Bungendore meaning the Mudchooks need to get back some bonus points back and it starts this weekend at home against Crookwell. Yass had a huge bonus point win against Milton at. The 82-5 win saw the Rams run in 14 tries with 5 players scoring doubles. The Rams are at home again taking on Batemans Bay. This is another huge match up with the teams only separated by 3 competitions and depending on results, whoever wins this game still may be in with a chance to make a dash for the Cup finals instead of the plate. The Harden Devils finally rejoined the winners circles thanks to a bonus point 20-0 win over Broulee. Harden will take some confidence out of that win but will sit this weekend out with the bye. For Broulee they will face Milton in a massive South

Coast grudge match. This is a chance for Milton to finally get a win for the season. The Platypi have struggled over recent weeks but will most definitely be up for this match.
