Welcome Messages
Dear Members of the IIW,
Dear Professional Colleagues,
Dear Guests,
In the name of the IIW2013 Organising Committee, we would like to welcome you very warmly to the 66th IIW Annual Assembly here in Essen. For the fourth time since 1957, you have selected Germany as the meeting place for your annual event. For us at the DVS, it is a special honour to be allowed to be your host once more on this occasion. We are even more pleased this year, because, after a four year hiatus, the world-leading SCH-WEISSEN & SCHNEIDEN 2013, International Trade Fair Joining Cutting Surfacing, will take place in Essen again. Your Annual Assembly and the International Trade Fair therefore turn Essen into the center of international joining technology for two weeks.
Nevertheless, both major events, the IIW Annual Assembly and the SCHWEISSEN & SCHNEIDEN 2013, are not just two con-secutive events in the international industry calendar. For the link that connects them thematically and conceptually with each other is the IIW International Conference. This year, it is under the heading “Automation in Welding”. Under this title, joining processes like laser welding and arc welding, resistance weld-ing and friction stir welding, are intensely examined. Moreover, worldwide experts will hold lectures on production process-es and process flows, on pipeline construction and the mar-ket prospects of joining technology in different countries of the world.
With its top-class presentations, the IIW International Confer-ence is the connecting link between your Working Units on the worldwide status of joining technology and the global market that can be seen in the form of products and services at the SCHWEISSEN & SCHNEIDEN 2013. The fact that current glob-al technological joining issues and innovative product solutions come together in this form constitutes a unique phenomenon that opens up absolutely new synergies. We hope that you will all benefit from this to the highest degree.
As a venue for your IIW Annual Assembly, Essen is a location that could not be more suitable. The town has always been the venue of the SCHWEISSEN & SCHNEIDEN and hence a place where the international world of joining technology feels right at home. Also, some parallels can be drawn between joining tech-nology and the cultural capital of Europe in 2010:
Joining technology, for example, is continuously developing. New technologies, processes or products are being conceived. Current issues give rise to incentives for new research and prac-tically-oriented solutions. In the field of joining technology, there is always something happening - in the location of Essen as well.
From a town whose image in earlier times used to be predomi-nantly characterised by industrial plants, it has developed into a place where art and culture, science, economy and service pro-viders are right at home. With the supporting programme for the IIW Annual Assembly and with different technical-scientific tours that we are offering in addition to the IIW working sessions, you can see and judge for yourself. In Essen and its surroundings, there is a place for large-scale industry, for SMEs and for trade. These are precisely the target groups for which the results of IIW work and the offer of the SCHWEISSEN & SCHNEIDEN 2013 are relevant.
With 570,000 inhabitants, Essen is one of the largest cities in Germany. At the same time, however, Essen is also the cen-tre of the Ruhr metropolis with 5.2 million inhabitants, Europe‘s third-biggest conurbation. In combination with the extremely favourable location of the town relative to the important sales markets of Europe, Essen thus turns into the ideal location for economic commitment and international business relationships. We would like to invite you to draw inspiration from this atmo-sphere and use your stay here in Essen, for the SCHWEISSEN & SCHNEIDEN 2013, to profit from this potential. With the DVS Congress and three Young Welders‘ Competitions at the same time, at the Trade Fair you will also experience other special fac-ets of the world of joining technology.
When the entire world of joining technology meets for two weeks in one location, this poses a special challenge for the organisers. However, thanks to professional cooperation between the Inter-national Institute of Welding (IIW), the Essen Congress Center, all sponsors and other parties involved, we have succeeded to-gether to implement something extraordinary. We hope that the result will convince you, too. Enjoy the German hospitality and the stay in Essen, and experience the international world of join-ing technology in a totally new dimension.

Welcome to IIW2013-Essen –
A Unique Opportunity
for Science and Industry
A warm welcome to all attendees of the 66th IIW Annual As-sembly and International Conference 2013. It is an exceptional honour for us to be able to welcome the IIW family to Essen for the second time since 1957. We are delighted that Messe Essen can once again be host to these top-calibre international trade events, particularly in the year of its 100th jubilee. Espe-cially because the welding world is being offered a remarkable opportunity this autumn: the interaction with the SCHWEISSEN & SCHNEIDEN 2013, International Trade Fair Joining Cutting Surfacing in Essen.
The combination of congress and trade fair is a unique oppor-tunity for science and industry. As international experts you can see the technology trends of the industry, which you explain and advance in the IIW Working Units, put into practice at the global innovation platform SCHWEISSEN & SCHNEIDEN – frequently via impressive live demonstrations. Manufacturers and users, in turn, can obtain a wealth of valuable knowledge about the spe-cific application possibilities of automation solutions at the IIW International Conference.
Therefore, we can say with pride: never before was so much competence in the fields of joining, cutting and surfacing pooled in our city as is the case this autumn. And our sincere thanks to our long-standing partner, DVS – German Welding Society, which, as the organiser of the IIW Annual Assembly and the International Conference as well as the patron of the SCHWEISSEN & SCHNEIDEN, has made this unique opportuni-ty for knowledge transfer possible.
I wish all those participating in the IIW event a successful and pleasant time at the fair and the Congress Center Essen.

Research Center
Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH, Jülich
Wednesday 11th September, 2013
Forschungszentrum Jülich is a national research center that combines 8 research institutes comprising 50 sub-institutes and more than 5,000 employees in the fields of energy and climate research, bio- and geosciences, medicine and neurosciences, complex systems, simulation sciences, neutron sciences and nanotechnology as well as a central scientific division with 3 subdivisions.
The technical tour includes an overview of Forschungszentrum Jülich and special visits to the Central Institute of Engineering, Electronics and Analytics (ZEA) and TEXTOR.
ZEA – Central Institute of Engineering, Electronics and Analytics (ZEA-1: Engineering and Technology)
ZEA-1 designs, develops and manufactures scientific equip-ment, set-ups and processes for the research institutes of For-schungszentrum Jülich and also for third parties which are not available in the market. Nearly every component manufactured by ZEA-1 is a prototype. Every new component is based on the wishes and specifications decided by the scientists.
TEXTOR is a Tokamak Experiment for Technology Oriented Re-search in the field of plasma-wall interaction. The scope not only includes a detailed analysis of particle and energy exchange between the plasma and the surrounding chamber but also in-volves active measures to optimise the first wall and the plasma boundary region in such a way that wall erosion, particle release and impurity influx into the plasma core are reduced to tolerable levels.
Duration: 08:30 – 15:30 (including travel time). Actual time of tour is about 10:00 – 14:00.

Visit to the Rapid Technology Center (RTC)
The Rapid Technology Center deals with additive manufacturing (AM) processes such as laser sintering and laser beam melting. All AM technologies have one thing in common: the parts are manufactured in layers from formless materials (e.g. powder ma-terial). In this manner, it is possible to make very complex parts which may seem inconceivable. Different kinds of materials can also be processed. During the on-site visit, you will see differ-ent machines working with plastic and metal materials. Quite a number of medical and industrial parts will be presented to gain a detailed insight into the AM technologies with their enormous potentials. Current research projects will also be presented.
Duration: 09:15 – 13:15 (including travel time). Actual time of tour is about 10:00 – 12:30.

Sightseeing Tours
Cologne and the Romans
Wednesday 11th September, 2013
Visiting Germany’s oldest city Cologne, commercial capital and cultural metropolis, is like taking a trip through 2,000 years of history from the Roman Empire to modern times. Its innumer-able cultural and historical treasures, world-famous museums and active art scene are towered over by the twin spires of one of the finest ecclesiastical edifices in the world, the Cologne Ca-thedral (UNESCO World Heritage). Get to know the third-largest cathedral in the world and Cologne’s historical city centre on a guided tour before enjoying a light lunch at the famous pub and brew house “Gaffel am Dom”. The classic “Gaffel Koelsch” is a particularly fresh specialty beer from Cologne, brewed ac-cording to a time-honoured family recipe and the German Purity Law of 1516. Feeling invigorated after a few Koelsch, you will be ready for “taking an elevator back to Roman times”: tour the underground of the city hall (built in 1330) and see the exca-vated foundations of the Praetorium, the residence of the city’s Imperial Roman governors during the 1st to 4th centuries and the old sewer system, exemplifying the engineering skills of Roman builders.
Duration: 09:00 – 16:00 (including travel time). Actual time of tour is about 10:15 – 14:45.

Visit to Zollverein Coal Mine
Wednesday 11th September, 2013
Guided tour of the UNESCO World Heritage Zollverein Shaft XII.
The central shaft system which went into service in 1932 after being built by Fritz Schupp and Martin Kremmer in the style of the new objectivity was the largest and most productive hard coal mine in Europe until it was closed down in 1986. Zollvere-in Shaft XII has been renovated in stages since 1990 and, in 2001, both it and the coking plant were declared by UNESCO to be a World Heritage site, together with Shaft System 1/2/8. Around the “Eiffel Tower of the Ruhr region”, a wide variety of cultural activities today create the attraction which draws up to 800,000 visitors a year onto the grounds. You can immerse yourself in a daily tour of the “coal route” in the history of the mine and choose between numerous exhibitions, concerts and dance performances. Zollverein is more than just an impressive witness to the heavy industrial past and a cultural magnet; the World Heritage site is also developing into a centre for the prac-tice, teaching and research of design. As the visitor centre for the Ruhr region, it also offers an overview of the tourist and cul-tural attractions of the region to visitors from around the world. The new Ruhr Museum provides an insight into the history of the region and is located in the coal washing plant.
Duration: 13:30 – 16:30 (including travel time). Actual time of tour is about 14:00 – 16:00.

Fashion and Culture in Düsseldorf
Thursday 12th September, 2013
The capital of North Rhine-Westphalia, bustling and fashionable Düsseldorf, has a lot to offer its guests and residents. Get an overview of the Rhine metropolis with all its facets as a culture, art and fashion city during your guided tour and get to know the Media Harbour, the city’s centre for the creative industries, on a guided walk. A vibrant architectural diversity contributes to this area‘s unique creative atmosphere and thus it has become a destination for visitors interested in and fascinated by architec-tural highlights – especially the Leaning Towers by Frank O. Geh-ry. Savour the scenery along the River Rhine and the historical centre of the city before enjoying an exclusively arranged organ concert at the historical church of St. Maximilian. Continue your tour to the Ständehaus, a palace which was built in the Italian Renaissance style and now houses the K21 collection with im-portant works of contemporary art, before enjoying a light lunch at one of Düsseldorf’s typical house breweries, well-known for the “Altbier”, a dark specialty beer brewed according to the Ger-man “Reinheitsgebot”, the Purity Law dating back to 1516. Münster, City of Bicycles
Friday 13th September, 2013
This multi-faceted city of science and reputable university town is best-known as the site of the signing of the Treaty of West-phalia ending the Thirty Years‘ War in 1648. And it is the bicycle capital of Germany: there are twice as many bikes in Münster as inhabitants, namely 500,000, and the well-provided network of cycle tracks makes it a pleasure to ride around town and coun-tryside. Your guided tour of the historical part of cosmopolitan Münster will, of course, include a visit to the city’s landmark, the Peace of Westphalia Town Hall and the Hall of Peace, the St. Lamberti Market and City Church which is famous for its rather gruesome history of the three cages attached to the spire where the corpses of the Baptist movement leaders were hung in the mid-16th century, further the St. Pauls Cathedral with its famous astronomical clock from the late Middle Ages and Münster’s parlour, the Prinzipalmarkt, a square with characteristic gabled houses and colonnades, rich in tradition and offering numerous exclusive shops. Before heading back to Essen, you will enjoy a light lunch at Münster’s traditional pub “Pinkus Müller”, family brewery since 1816 in the 5th generation.

Sightseeing Tour of Essen
(including Cathedral Treasury)
Saturday 14th September, 2013
Sightseeing Tour of Essen, Part I
Discover all the sites of the city of Essen during this guided coach trip. The tour includes a view of the Old Synagogue, the Aalto opera house and the World Heritage site Zollverein. Visit and Guided Tour of the Cathedral Treasury in the City Centre. The glamorous history of the city is revealed in this cathedral treasure chamber. Priceless ecclesiastical exhibits are shown here and attest to the power and the affluence of the ruling ab-besses who governed the monastery as well as the city of Essen from the 9th century through to the 19th. The “Golden Madonna” is recognised as the oldest known sculpture of the Virgin Mary in the Western world. In the 9thcentury, Bishop Altfrid founded a free and secular ladies convent specifically for the ladies of the nobility. This eventually became the city of Essen. They were not lacking in wealth or strong political influence due to the close family ties which the ladies had to the Ottonian ruling house. An indication of their affluence is found in the “Child’s Crown” of Otto III, the Essen abbess Mathilde was his godmother. In contrast, the four crucifixes dating back to the Ottonic times represent piety. There are only six of these masterpieces left in the world.

Industrial Heritage and Art in Oberhausen
Saturday 14th September, 2013
Oberhausen is a prime example of the successful economic re-structuring of the region and its main landmark, the Gasometer Oberhausen, is the anchor point of the European Route of In-dustrial Heritage (ERIH) and also one of the major sights in the Ruhr area. Built in the late 1920s, Europe‘s largest disc-type gas holder is an impressive reminder of the heavy industry which characterised the Ruhr area for more than a century. The former gas store is regarded as the landmark of this region and is also the highest (117.5 m) exhibition hall in Europe. As a venue, it inspired artists of international relevance and acquired supra-re-gional importance with its spectacular exhibitions – such as the forthcoming realisation of BIG AIR PACKAGE, a spectacular in-door installation by Christo, which will be shown between March and December 2013. Experience this thrilling work of art as well as the Christo Exhibition on your guided tour. Afterwards, enjoy some time at one of Europe’s largest shopping and leisure cen-tres, the CentrO, which was built in 1996 and is only a short walk away from the Gasometer.

Beethoven’s Bonn and “Red Wine Paradise”
Sunday 15th September, 2013
The former capital of Germany (1949-1990), now replaced by Berlin, is still a centre of politics and administration, currently a host to 18 United Nations institutions and a reputable university town. Situated on the banks of the River Rhine in the south of Germany’s largest metropolitan area, Bonn is one of the oldest cities in the country with a history which dates back to Roman times around 11 BC and the birthplace of Ludwig van Beethoven (1770). On your guided tour of the historical town centre, you will also visit the Beethoven Museum which is located in the house where he was born. Beethoven still sets the tone – the annual International Beethoven Festival honours the great composer’s heritage in quite a special way. After your excursion through a colourful piece of Western history by the Rhine, you will continue to Germany’s “Red Wine Paradise” – the Ahr Valley. A winery will welcome you for a private tour, wine tasting and light lunch.
Duration: 08:00 – 16:00 (including travel time). Actual time of tour is about 09:30 – 14:30.
