LymphedemaLymphedema is excessive swelling of a body

part caused by the abnormal accumulation

of lymph fluid. It usually occurs in an arm or

leg but sometimes the face, neck or abdomen

is involved. Often, patients are told there is

nothing that can be done for lymphedema.

However, there is a successful therapy

available to improve the condition.

Potential Benefi ts of CDT • Return of body part to normal size

• Improved range of motion and functioning

• Less chance of cellulitis (skin infection)

• Improved quality of life

Indications for CDTIndividuals with both primary (no known cause) or secondary lymphedema (caused by trauma, cancer treatment, venous insufficiency or other factors) can benefit from CDT. Most insurance requires a physician’s referral to enter the program.

Length of TreatmentOn average, treatments last one hour and are needed 3-5 days per week for 4-5 to weeks. Mild lymphedema present for only a short time may only take a couple of weeks to resolve, whereas it may take longer for those with long-standing lymphedema, fibrosis (hardened tissue) or other complicating medical factors.

Oncology RehabilitationOncology Rehabilitation helps individuals lead more productive and independent lives after a cancer diagnosis. Many times the

disease and treatment process leave the patient with pain as well as loss of strength, endurance, range of motion and the ability to complete daily tasks. Our therapists offer a variety of treatment interventions to restore function and improve quality of life, such as: • Myofascial release - gentle hands-on stretching to relieve pain and minimize scarring • Aquatic Therapy - graduated exercise program in a therapeutic pool • Generalized conditioning and therapeutic exercises • Electrical Stimulation for pain relief or strengthening • Training in energy conservation • Techniques to improve independent activities of daily living

Indications for Oncology RehabilitationThis program could be beneficial to any patient with a cancer diagnosis who is experiencing decreased strength, endurance, range of motion or ability to complete daily tasks. Pain which appears related to the musculoskeletal system is also an indication for oncology rehabilitation. Patients with loss of shoulder motion post-mastectomy may find this program particularly helpful. A physician referral is required to participate in Oncology Rehabilitation.

Complete Decongestive Therapy Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) is a proven and effective treatment that removes excessive lymph fluid from the body. The components of CDT are manual lymph drainage (MLD), compression bandaging, skincare, exercises and patient education.

· MLD is a gentle massage-like technique that stimulates superficial lymph vessels and moves fluid toward functioning lymphnodes

· Compression bandages assist venous and lymph return, improve effectiveness of muscle pump during activity and help to preserve the results achieved by MLD

· Skin care is provided in the event of an open wound or skin breakdown to reduce the risk of an infection

· Gentle exercises are prescribed with external compression to increase the rate in which fluid is removed

· Patient education on causes, self-management and risk reduction practices are an integral part of the program
