In June 2019, TheatreWorks Silicon Valley received the 2019 TonyAward for Regional Theatre, the extraordinary highlight of a year ofdiverse, award-winning productions, innovative arts education, andexceptional new works that played across the country and aroundthe world. The company hosted over 100,000 audience members,served 13,000 students, and developed over a dozen new plays andmusicals.

The season began with the Regional Premiere of Jeannie Sakata’sHold These Truths, the moving saga of a Japanese American whoresisted internment during World War II. Lisa Rothe’s productionwon Theatre Bay Area Awards for Outstanding Production, Direction,and Performance by Joel de la Fuente. Native Gardens followed,with Amy Gonzalez directing the comedy of a Latinx couple in conflictwith very traditional neighbors. The Jeanine Tesori/Lisa Kron musicalFun Home became our next award winner. Its tale of a lesbianartist’s relationship with her closeted father received the Bay AreaTheatre Critics Circle Award for Best South Bay Production. The holidays brought the California Premiere of Tuck Everlasting, a family-oriented Broadway musical originally developed in TheatreWorks’New Works Retreat.

The new year saw Leslie Martinson’s critically acclaimed Frost/Nixon,a clash between President and press relevant both then and now.The gospel blues of bio-musical Marie and Rosetta followed, with aroof-raising embodiment of African American icon Sister RosettaTharpe. In the spring, the best-selling World Premiere of HersheyFelder: A Paris Love Story recreated the life and music of ClaudeDebussy, and the Regional Premiere of Archduke by Pulitzer Prizenominee Rajiv Joseph explored the origins of World War I underGiovanna Sardelli’s inspired direction. July 2018, our World Premiere of The Prince of Egypt was playing in Copenhagen and contemplating London’s West End; when itended in June 2019, the Regional Theatre Tony Award brought TheatreWorks’ most remarkable year to a glorious conclusion.

The summer of 2018 also featured our 17th Annual New Works Festival, including Paul Gordon’s musical of Jane Austen’s Pride andPrejudice, and Laura Ollstein’s They Promised Her the Moon, aboutan aviatrix who could have been America’s first female astronaut.Both shows are scheduled for premiere productions in our 2019/20Season. The New Works Initiative has developed over 160 newworks for the American theatre.

TheatreWorks for Schools, our arts education initiative, engagedthousand of students, teachers, and families throughout the region,including many young patients at the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital. Our programs help students master core curriculum, develop social and artistic skills, and experience live theatre for the first time—essential to a life-long interest in the arts.

Outstanding professional productions onstage, innovative newworks in development, vital arts education in the schools—TheatreWorks is proud to be the cultural centerpiece of our Silicon Valley community.

2018 NEW WORKS FESTIVALOur 2018 New Works Festival, the fifth curated by Director of NewWorks Giovanna Sardelli, assembled exceptional talent from acrossthe country to present innovative new plays and musicals. Over thecourse of the ten-day Festival, over 5,000 patrons gathered at PaloAlto’s Lucie Stern Theatre to experience this artistic highlight of thesummer. Writers and composers mounted staged readings of theirworks, received audience feedback, then refined their pieces with the support of TheatreWorks’ performers and directors. Audiencesand artists agree that the New Works Festival is unique, inspiring,and a source of great pride for TheatreWorks.

The Festival also included a Keynote Address by Suzanne Bradbeer,author of TheatreWorks’ hit drama Confederates; a sextet of short playsby Suzanne Bradbeer, Patricia Cotter, Dipika Ghua, Velina Hasu Houston,Syche Phillips, and Geetha Reddy; a Next Generation musical titledVenture by Michael Najar; and a Late Night Special Presentation bythe rock band The Kilbanes.

The 2018/19 Season marked the 17th anniversary of our renownedNew Works Initiative, which has contributed to the development ofscores of new plays and musicals, earning national recognition andacclaim for TheatreWorks.

WRITERS’ RETREAT In January 2019, TheatreWorks hosted our annual Writers’ Retreat,providing playwrights, composers, and lyricists from around thecountry the much needed time, space, and resources to refine theirnewest plays and musicals.

FOR SCHOOLS

Concepts at Play: These action-packed, 10-day residencies integratethe performing arts with science and poetry, while increasing vocabularyretention. Physically we explore complex concepts and engage students’ creativity. (Grades K–5)

School Tours: The Oskar Assembly Series directly addresses the social and emotional learning of our students by presenting topicssuch as bullying, coping with stressors, and understanding genderstereotypes. This touring program makes stops at elementary schoolsthroughout the Bay Area. (Grades K–5)

Student Matinees: School groups and homeschool families make up the audience for these special daytime performances, enhancedby a study guide, in-class visits prior to the matinee, and a post-showdiscussion with mainstage artists. (Grades 8–12)

The Young Playwrights Project: High school students learn to develop play structure, create characters, and write dialogue duringthis 10-week residency program which culminates in staged readingspresented by professional actors and directors. (Grades 9–12)

Young Storytellers Lab: In this residency, middle school studentscreate their own material and participate in the staging of their work.This work includes text, voice, movement, and sound. Writing in smallgroups, the class creates a set of 3-4 scenes that are woven togetherwith the assistance of the teaching artist to create an adaptation or aresponse to a text. (Grades 6–8)

Arts Integration Network: Teachers of the Palo Alto Unified SchoolDistrict receive professional development and ongoing mentorship inarts integration techniques through a partnership with TheatreWorksSilicon Valley, PAUSD, Stanford Live, and the Kennedy Center’s Partnersin Education program.

FOR YOUTH

Summer Camp: Elementary age students build a foundation of performing arts techniques through acting, playwriting, dance,music, and stagecraft. Over two weeks, campers build theatre andlife skills, all while creating original works. (Grades K–6)

Spring Camp: This one-week session during spring break focuses on building acting skills, working together, and having funwhile engaging their imaginations. (Grades K–5)

1440 Countdown: Teams of 5–8 students gather for 24 hours inTheatreWorks’ rehearsal hall to create their own play based on a themeprovided when teams arrive. Students attend workshops in playwriting,directing, and acting. The atmosphere challenges students to exercisetheir creativity and resilience in a safe environment and providesthem with the skills to take risks with confidence. (Grades 9–12)

COMMUNITY PROGRAMS

The Children’s Healing Project: Teaching Artists use creativity and self-expression to help aid the healing process for patients atLucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford, the Lucile PackardComprehensive Eating Disorders Unit at El Camino Hospital, andthe Ronald McDonald House.

Internships: Exceptional interns share their talents with TheatreWorksstaff while earning college credit and learning what it’s like to work ina professional theatre company.

EducationAT A GLANCEWe provided our community with 39,891 educational interactions.

We serve on average 13,000 students a year, 1,800 adult learners, 725 teachers, 57 schools from 5 counties.

30 new schools participated in TheatreWorks programs.

16 schools that support economically disadvantaged families participated, including Title 1 schools.

THEATREWORKS EVERLASTINGTheatreWorks Silicon Valley hosted our annual fall gala on November 3,2018 at the Sharon Heights Golf & Country Club. Titled TheatreWorksEverlasting and inspired by the company’s holiday production of TuckEverlasting, the gala celebrated TheatreWorks role in keeping theatrealive and everlasting through the continual development of new work.The beautiful Sharon Heights Golf and Country Club was transformedinto a magical forest, where guests could “time-travel” through thecocktail hour, listening to living music boxes presenting song anddance from other eras. Then on to dinner where table hosts had selected time-period themes for their tables and encouraged theirguests to dress to the theme. Auctioneer Chad Carvey brought energy and fun to the evening as guests bid on fabulous trips andone-of-a-kind experiences. The event culminated with a talented cast of artists who presented a mini-musical tale featuring songs from past New Works Festival productions.

TheatreWorks Everlasting was made possible by 208 businesses, individual donors, and attendees, raising a total of $469,183.

TheatreWorks Everlasting Fall Gala SPRING FUNDRAISER—THE LEGENDARY VAULT On Saturday, April 27, 2019, TheatreWorks hosted our fifth annualspring party, this year themed The Legendary Vault. The TheatreWorksrehearsal space at the Sobrato Center for Nonprofits in RedwoodShores was transformed into “The Legendary Vault,” a secret placeof memory and magic where the ephemeral moments of theatrelost to the sands of time live on. In The Vault, hosts selected a favorite TheatreWorks production of the past as the theme for theirgroup. The party kicked off with a cocktail reception at The Vault’sFood Court where a myriad of delectable treats were offered whileguests bid on items at the Treasures From The Vault Silent Auction.After a lively live auction, guest also enjoyed a fabulous dessert buffet.The evening was capped by incredible musical entertainment fromTheatreWorks artists presenting “The Road Not Taken” a presentationof musical numbers from Broadway shows that TheatreWorks has NOTproduced.

The event was made possible by 147 businesses, individual donors,and attendees. The Legendary Vault raised a total of $216,302.
