TGP Landscape Architects were established in 1994 by Landscape Architects Rachel Tennant and Nicola Garmory, with the aim of providing an original and imaginative design consultancy, offering clients a high quality service in all aspects of project design, management and implementation.

Since 1994 the practice has been involved in a variety of successful urban regeneration, environmental and landscape design projects in Scotland and the North of England, acting in the role of individual designers, members of multi-disciplinary teams, and project coordinators. Matthew Benians became a director in 2009.

In 2008 Rachel Tennant and Nicola Garmory, became founding directors of Durham based TGP Landscape Architects (North) Ltd, together with Christopher Davis following the landscape team’s exit from Bureau Veritas.

Rachel, Nicola and Chris all have over 25 years’ experience in the profession.

TGP Landscape Architects and TGP Landscape Architects (North) Ltd are registered practices with the Landscape Institute, certified to ISO9001:2008 and Members of Constructionline.

The assessment, analysis, conservation, refurbishment and design of Historic Landscapes requires sensitive and specialist expertise. TGP has an experienced team of Landscape Architects with extensive knowledge of working on Historic Landscapes and with other specialist professionals. Our teams often include specialist researchers, archaeologists, architects, access consultants, civil engineers and quantity surveyors, CDM co-ordinators, audience development and other specialists.

English Heritage and National Trust Scotland

The Company has undertaken a series of commissions for English Heritage including:

Whitby Abbey Headland Project

Specialist Landscape Architectural Services associated with this major project which included archaeological investigation, new museum and interpretation within the Banqueting House, Restoration of the 17th Century North Entrance Courts, new car parking, new southern entrance building to the Abbey Grounds, new visitor circulation, removal of the original car park and restoration of the Headland. As well as design services, TGP (then Casella) provided a landscape management plan which included restoration of the Abbey Pond and grassland management proposals.

Awards: Winner of the 2003 Civic Trust Access Award, 2002 Europa Nostra Diploma and RIBA White Rose Award for Excellence in Architecture.

Derwentcote Cementation Furnace, County DurhamLandscape Development Study including access, circulation, interpretation and landscape management.

Chesters Roman Fort, NorthumberlandPhotomontage and detailed design of interpretation material.

Recent work for National Trust Scotland includes:

Green Bank Gardens Preparation of a masterplan for the walled garden at the Trust’s Greenbank Garden property. The masterplan sought to improve visitors’ arrival experience, introduce much needed structure to the walled garden and reinforce the link between the house and walled garden. Main structural recommendations within the walled garden included water rills within the main lawn, new gravel paths, tree lined walks and relocation of a statue. Education and proposals to encourage return visits included the introduction of competition gardens on a domestic scale and an artist’s studio located in the former apple store.

Much of our work has been associated with the Heritage Lottery Fund Parks for People programme. The company has achieved considerable success in obtaining First and Second HLF grant aid on behalf of Local Authorities and taking schemes through from master planning to development and delivery phases. All our work is underpinned by thorough historic research, analysis of the existing situation, and consultation with the local community; working with our clients to provide realistic, sustainable proposals set within a framework of good management practice.

Projects include:

Berwick Parks, Berwick upon Tweed TGP prepared a successful second round submission for two parks dating from the 1930s – Castle Vale Park and Coronation Park adjacent to Berwick Station and Castle and Town Walls. The project includes entrances, pathway and access improvements, shelters, lily pond and re-establishment of the original planting structure. TGP and their team provided the Conservation Management Plan, Management and Maintenance Plan, Activity Plan, Interpretation Strategy, detailed design and contract management of the Delivery Phase. The parks were re-opened by the Duchess of Northumberland in 2014.

Wallsend Parks, North Tyneside

Preparation of a conservation management plan as part of a successful HLF Stage 1 Parks for People application. TGP provided specialist landscape advice and planting design for North Tyneside Council as part of Stage 2, and detailed design and contract management of the delivery phase working closely with North Tyneside Council’s Joint Venture partner Kier North Tyneside. The Wallsend Parks are important because of their close association with the social history of Tyneside and close links to the local community and important people, they include Wallsend Hall Grounds, Richardson Dees Park and Arboretum.

Durham Cathedral Woodlands

Visual impact assessment of tree removals plan to accompany planning application as part of the Cathedral’s HLF Woodland Management Project and proposals for tree works to re-establish historic views.

Pannett Park, Whitby

Preparation of a Conservation Management Plan and supporting documents for a significant late 1920’s park owned by the people of Whitby and inherited as part of a far sighted legacy. TGP acted as lead consultant for the subsequent successful development and delivery phases undertaking detailed design and contract management.

The removal of Tree 514 may isolate the adjacent and prominent Beech, Tree 513, which may become susceptible to windthrow (both trees may be one of the original 18th Century plantings).

Towneley Park, BurnleyPreparation of feasibility study/restoration masterplan for this once private estate with much of its landscape character dating from the 18th century. The park and former family residence Towneley Hall were purchased by Burnley Corporation in 1902. TGP acted as lead consultant for the development phase of the project and provided on call services during the delivery phase, which was undertaken in-house by Burnley Borough Council.

Exhibition Park, Newcastle upon TynePreparation of successful Second Round application as lead consultant, preparation of masterplan and design development to RIBA Stage D as part of an HLF Stage 2 Application. Exhibition Park dates from the 1880s and is associated with and named after two major exhibitions, the Royal Jubilee Exhibition of 1887 and the North East Coast Exhibition. The legacy of major events continues in the park to this day with the annual Mela and numerous sporting events.

Bentley Park, DoncasterCommissioned as lead consultants in May 2011 to carry out all works necessary to deliver a Stage 2 Heritage Lottery Fund Parks for People application for Bentley Park. Despite a challenging programme TGP worked closely with officers of Doncaster MBC, community groups from Bentley and activity planning specialists PLB to ensure that a comprehensive bid document was successfully delivered to the HLF in Leeds at the end of August 2011.

Northumberland Park, North ShieldsLandscape masterplan review as part of a successful HLF Stage 1 Parks for People application. Captain Gomoszynski’s design for the landscape at Northumberland Park, opened in 1885, is a good example of C19th public park design following the principles established during the Victorian public parks movement.

Middleton Park, LeedsPreparation of feasibility study and conservation management plan. The park is part of a surviving medieval manorial woodland with a rich history of coal extraction and early use of railways. Proposals include for a new park centre, extensive interpretation and upgrading of facilities.

Roundhay Park, LeedsLandscape contract management & site supervision during Delivery Phase of this 700 acre major urban park, which was originally established as a Deer park in the 12th Century and is one of Leed’s largest and most important historic landscapes.

Cleadon Park, South TynesidePreparation of a feasibility study, masterplan and conservation management plan for the park which is closely linked to the industrial and social history of the borough. The park dates from the 1930s but has historical associations with a wealthy landowner, the quarrying industry, a former sanatorium and large housing developments echoing the Garden City movement.

One of three Victorian parks on the seafront. Features include a boating lake, formal terrace, fountain, bandstand and ornamental planting.

South Park, DarlingtonTGP provided landscape consultancy services as part of Parson Brinckerhoff’s team. Works consisted of the restoration and refurbishment of several of the listed structures within the park, including the complete refurbishment of the lake, the creation of two ornamental gardens, repairs to existing footpaths, improvements to access, and reinstating the historic circuit walk, as well as new tree and shrub planting together with management to the existing.

Horden Welfare ParkA fine example of a park established in 1929 through the Miners Welfare movement. Detailed design and implementation of the £1.6 m restoration scheme. Principal works included restoration of the bandstand and entrance gates, refurbishment of planting structure, new play areas and provision of works compound and tea rooms.

Durham Riverbank GardensArchaeological and historic garden research and feasibility study as a basis for refurbishment of historic gardens on the Durham peninsular, which form an important part of the context of the Cathedral and Castle, recognised as a World Heritage Site.

Client: University of Durham in association with Durham City Council

Ropner Park, Stockton on Tees Preparation of feasibility study/restoration masterplan for this traditional Victorian Park dating from 1893. The project included lake management, restoration of bandstand and fountain and re-establishment of a many features, together with a new parks centre, play area and café. Lead consultant, preparation of Conservation Management Plan, Stage 2 & 3 design and implementation of works package.

Auckland Castle Park, Bishop Auckland, County DurhamHistoric landscape survey and restoration masterplan for this unique estate which formed the country residence of the Bishops of Durham dating from the 12th Century. The medieval deer park was later developed into an 18th century landscape park.

Carlisle Park, Morpeth, NorthumberlandPreparation of feasibility study and restoration masterplan, conservation management plan, detailed design and contract management for urban park dating from 1929, containing 11th Century Mott and Bailey, 13th Century Morpeth Castle and semi-natural ancient oak woodland.

Carlisle Park Phase II, MorpethFeasibility study to examine the viability of a visitor centre in this 1930’s park to complement the William Turner Garden established in 2001 as part of the HLF funded restoration project. William Turner, born in Morpeth in 1508, is known as the ‘Father of English Botany’ and published the first herbal and botanical work in English in 1551.

The William Turner Garden, Chelsea Flower Show 2004Show garden to celebrate William Turner, Father of English Botany and the garden created in 2001 in Carlisle Park, Morpeth. The garden links closely with the RHS’ bicentenary. Conceptual and detailed design, project management and site supervision. The garden returned to Morpeth as a sensory garden for the Northumberland Blind Association.

Ridley Park, BlythConservation Management Plan and feasibility study to examine the conservation and management of a late Victorian coastal park close to Blyth town centre and the port. A major community consultation exercise was undertaken including an independent survey by Blyth Community College. Restoration proposals include re-establishment of historic features as well as a programme of replacement of structure planting and biodiversity measures. The company designed and contract managed a delivery phase associated with new toddler and water play facilities.

Feasibility study to examine the future of the C19th Grade II listed building, museum and landscaped park. The study provides a full evaluation of sustainable and economically viable options for major improvements aimed at attracting new visitors to the Park and Hall. The core concept of the proposal is to create a landscape and museum which visitors can explore and while exploring, learn by doing. The concept is aimed at attracting a regional audience.

Shibden Park, HalifaxPreparation of successful First Round application, feasibility study/restoration masterplan and conservation management plan. The hall dates from 1420, however the main features were introduced by Anne Lister in the 1830’s; they include formal gardens, wilderness cascade, lake and associated parkland.

Cusworth Park, DoncasterPreparation of successful First Round application, feasibility study/restoration masterplan and conservation management plan. The main interest of the park centres around Richard Woods’ designs, produced between 1760-1766. This accompanies a Heritage Lottery Fund bid for the refurbishment of the Hall, designed by George Platt and enhanced by James Paine.

Blackpool Coastal ParkPreparation of feasibility study/restoration masterplan and conservation management plan for a series of seaside gardens and coastal features dating from the 1860’s.

Client: Blackpool Borough Council

Stanley Park, BlackpoolPreparation of successful First Round Application (when Casella) feasibility study/restoration masterplan and conservation management plan for this Arts and Craft park of regional and national significance. The park was designed by Lancastrian Architect Thomas Mawson in 1923. Works included lake restoration, park centre/café refurbishment, restoration of bandstand and horticultural infrastructure. TGP recently designed the new natural play area in conjunction with the Play Practice.

Buile Hill Park, SalfordPreparation of feasibility study/restoration masterplan for this public park dating from 1903 when the Buile Hill estate was added to the public promenades of Seedley Park, previously opened in 1876. Proposals include the reintroduction of the formal lake and fountain.

Client: City of Salford

Peoples Park, Grimsby Preparation of successful First Round application, feasibility study/restoration masterplan and conservation management plan for this Victorian Park of national significance. The park was the subject of a design competition, won by William Barron and Sons in 1882.

Newark Castle Gardens, NottinghamshirePreparation of feasibility study, conservation management plan and submission document for refurbishment of gardens within the castle, laid out in 1889 by the Victorian Landscape Architect H.E. Milner. The company also provided detailed restoration planting designs and a management plan for the gardens. Scheme completed 2000.

Community Consultation and Working with Friends GroupsThe company is experienced in community consultation and working with Friends Groups to understand and deliver their requirements. Consultation is undertaken in a variety of ways including surveys and questionnaires, site visits and walkovers, workshops, talks and presentations, and exhibitions. We encourage representatives of Friends Groups to attend Steering Groups and engage in design review.

TGP North’s Director Chris Davis is a member of the HLF’s Register of Support Services in respect of Monitor and Mentor services in the North East and Yorkshire. He is also a Member of the RIBA’ North East’s Design Review Panel and has been appointed to Integreat Plus, Places Matter Design Review Panel for Yorkshire.

TGP’s Matthew Benians provided advice to HLF North West for three applications received under the HLF’s Parks for People process, and has acted as a project monitor during the stage 2 process at Chances Park in Carlisle.

TGP is supported by Chartered Landscape Manager, Annette Birch who is a member of the HLF’s Register of Support Services for Monitoring Services in the North West, North East and Yorkshire.

Bowes Museum, Barnard CastlePreparation of a Landscape Masterplan and Conservation Statement for the park and gardens. The Museum is a nineteenth century building containing a collection of European Fine and Decorative Arts, built in the style of a French chateau. The Grade 1 listed building and registered public park was purpose built by John and Josephine Bowes in 1869. The practice designed and contract managed the implementation of a play area and restoration of the perimeter pathway around the grounds following the award of funding through CDENT.

Plean Country Park, StirlingshireTGP were commissioned to undertake a Conservation Management Plan for the 80ha Country Park in Stirlingshire. The study reviewed the historical development of the early C18th designed landscape to the present date, which had included mineral extraction. Extensive community and stakeholder consultations were undertaken in conjunction with volunteers from the Friends of Plean Country Park. The study included the preparation of costed recommendations for the restoration of the walled garden, stables complex and house together with the incorporation of a new visitor centre.

Killhope Lead Mining MuseumTGP provided a landscape management plan for the museum grounds as part of a museum management plan lead by Restoration People. TGP were commissioned to undertake further landscape masterplanning following severe winter gales which resulted in considerable wind through of the forest surrounding the lead works. The study provided the opportunity to improve access and provide viewing areas to tell the story of the works.

Holytown Memorial Gardens, LanarkshireTGP prepared proposals to relocate the 1920s WW1 War Memorial and upgrade the internal layout and boundary to the associated memorial gardens. TGP undertook the detailed design which included the rebuilding of a curved masonry wall, pillars, railings and granite paving to the curtilage of the memorial, together with planting proposals within the memorial gardens.

Memorial Park, Bridge of Allan, StirlingshirePreparation of a Conservation Management Plan and Masterplan for an existing town park within Bridge of Allan. Memorial Park was gifted to the town by Edmund Pullar in the 1920s for the erection of a War Memorial to commemorate the fallen in the Great War. At the same time the park was laid out to the design of head gardener from the nearby Keir Estate. The steering group included members of the Community Council and Friends of Bridge of Allan. Community consultation during the study included visitor surveys and an exhibition.

Renfrew and Gallowhill Heritage TrailEnvironmental improvement works which included the refurbishment of the former tug engine ‘Clyde’ built in 1851. The introduction of new playful street furniture serves to refresh this historically important ferry crossing between Renfrew and Yoker on the River Clyde.

St Columba’s Cemetery, PaisleyThe Carts Greenspace commissioned TGP to undertake a Conservation Management Plan for the former burial ground to St Columba’s Gaelic Chapel in the Conservation Area of Oakshaw. The study reviewed the historical development of the site including recording of headstones, the social history, an assessment of the built features and natural heritage and significance of these; the conservation status of the site and results of consultation with the local community of Oakshaw. The study included the preparation of three costed sketch design proposals which represented the future development of the site as a publicly accessible pocket park.
