Tainan Coffin Toast

Sometimes in Taiwan you may hear of the snacks with their weird names, which are

most likely to make them inedible in some cases, such as STINKY tofu, PIG BLOOD

cake, and more. However, today we are going to introduce you another Tainan’s snack

with famously delicious contents but a horribly weird title – the “Coffin Toast”.

Maybe it sounds like an unfavorable choice for most people; however it is actually

just pieces of toast. The toast is cut, or dug, with a shallow pit on the surface,

in which the essence, different stuffing, chicken and various vegetables, will be

put in. In the final step, the pit with the stuffing will be covered by the dug-out

toast piece, which is the reason it got this creepy name.

Though it is similar to the western-style stuffed bread bowls, the taste is

definitely going to amaze you in Taiwanese way! In most cases, it is better to have

the toast before it gets cooled, while the traditional first step is to eat the lid

with the stuffing, then the sides. Now leave your seat, come to Tainan and enjoy

the ‘edible coffins’!
