Hai-an Road - A brave New WorldFrom a Dead End to a Shining PathPeople begin to pour into Hai-an Road as night falls. Here you can see office clerks choosing their favorite open-air cafes to unwind after a hard day’s work, or uniformed students busying themselves with capsule toys or photo stickers, or ladies searching for the lat-est fashion gear. Hai-an Road radiates with glamour at night, and bustles with people and activities on week-ends. Hai-an Road hasn’t been this busy since 1993!

A New Landscape of Human InterestIn 2004 the Tainan 21st Century Development Associa-tion and the Urban Development Bureau co-hosted the Hai-an Road Open-air Art Gallery event and turned small and irregular parcels of land into venues for in-stallation art. The installation art objects soon became photographic focal points, drawing many camera en-thusiasts both local and foreign. In 2007 Time Mag-azine (Asia) also published a full-page report which discussed the regeneration of Hai-an Road and the achievements of Tainan’s Cultural tourism policies.

The Champs-Elysees of TainanSince its inauguration Hai-an Road has experienced great rejuvenation. With broad sidewalks the thirty-eight-meter wide boulevard has become Tainan’s best location for outdoor cafes. Recently, it became a do-mestic and international media hot spot due to the 2004 Hai-an Street Art Gallery project, which won the Taishin Art Critique’s Special Award in 2005. Many of the shops on Hai-an Road not only combine youth and individuality but also fully utilize the esthetics of old structures into which new elements have been incorpo-rated, thus forming a unique Hai-an Road style, worthy of your visit!

Charismatic harbor: Anping fish market sightseeing tourStill figuring out where to go this coming New Year holi-day? How about spending an afternoon at a beautiful, old harbor? Tainan City Government warmly invites you out for a sightseeing tour at Anping Harbor on 2nd Janu-ary (Saturday) between 4pm and6pm.

Anping Harbor is famous as one of Taiwan’s most his-toric harbors and was once this country’s largest harbor serving as a gateway for foreign trade. In recent years, under subsidization of the Fishery Agency this location has been transformed into a tourism harbor. During the 8 years spent by Tainan City Mayor Hsu in promoting the establishment of “Anping National Historic Scenic Area”, it has become the ‘Star of Anping’ and attracts many visitors as a leisure and tourism destination. Therefore, it is no surprise that Anping Harbor was recently voted as the most charismatic harbor out of the top 10 harbors in Taiwan. However, the Tainan City Government has greater am-bitions and has set it sights on turning Anping Fishery Market into a top location for leisure activities. The sale of fishery products every weekend continues, but to make this New Year even more special, a live concert will be also held at this weekend’s “Anping fish market sight-seeing tour” event. So do come over and check it out if you haven’t been here already, and if you have – come again!
