Trees Forever 2006 Annual Report
Donor & VolunteerRecognition
Dear Friends,Thanks so much for reviewing the 2006 Trees Forever Annual Report. Whether
donor, volunteer, or other stakeholder, we hope you can see and feel on these pages the
astounding impact we have made together through Trees Forever. In our own backyards
and on our farms, in our parks and along our streets, on our school campuses and public
lands, we are making a difference for our states and our planet. Thank you for your
generosity and many contributions.
Trees and natural areas are essential to our quality of life. As a part of Trees Forever,
you know that to be true. However, there are millions of people who do not necessarily
make that connection. That is why Trees Forever brings together diverse partners, involves
and empowers passionate volunteers and community leaders, and raises dollars and other
supportive resources that lead to more trees and great projects on-the-ground. More than
ever, we need to be active stewards and leaders in our neighborhoods, communities, and
rural areas.
By supporting and engaging passionate champions of the places we live, work, and
play, Trees Forever will continue to Plant and care for trees and natural areas Restore
and beautify roadways and entranceways
Improve air and water quality Showcase
diverse ways to use trees and plants, and
 Carry-out meaningful model projects that
inspire and educate.
We’re looking forward to our
continued partnership with you. Thank you
again for all you do to help with important
Trees Forever projects. Together we are
growing living legacies that generate positive
benefits essential to our quality of life, year
after year.

2006 AccomplishmentsRoadways – provides planning and landscape design assistance to Iowa communities and funds the
planting of native grasses, wildflowers, shrubs, and trees along transportation corridors.
Communities – utility-sponsored programs, collaborative partnerships, and on-site assistance to
help community volunteers with all aspects of tree planting. Buffers & Water Quality –promote streamside plantings of trees, shrubs, and grasses to improve water quality, reduce soil erosion, and
increase wildlife habitat. The programs also assist with agroforestry projects and watershed improvement
planning. Education & Outreach – provides positive outdoor experiences to help improve
communications skills, increase understanding of the natural environment, and inspire the education and
career goals of at-risk youth. Our Woodland Legacy – Giving Voice and Value to the Natural
Assets of Linn County – raises public awareness of how trees, woodlands and natural areas are community
assets that provide benefits that greatly enhance our quality of life.

2006 Financial SummaryYour generosity and commitment to Trees Forever helps to grow stronger communities and a better
environment across the Midwest. Thank you for your continued financial support. In 2006, the
enthusiasm generated by new Trees Forever programs such as Our Woodland Legacy, We Dig Your
District, NeighborWoods, and Growing Futures resulted in a 14% increase in contributions by
corporations, foundations, and individuals to
Trees Forever.
Although public sector funding for 2006 was
essentially level, recent congressional actions
indicates that funding from federal and state
sources will become increasingly difficult to
secure in the future.
Trees Forever increased funding for program
services and pass-through grants in 2006.
Spending in program services decreased slightly
while education and support costs increased as a
percentage of total revenue. This is attributed to the
increased effort needed to secure funding for and
initiate new programs. As these programs mature a
greater amount of revenue will be allocated directly to program services and pass-through grants.
In 2006 Trees Forever increased net assets for the seventh year in a row. Conservative management
practices are oriented toward building a base that will provide the ability to deliver quality programs
well into the future. This approach assures good stewardship of all contributions.

A Message from Volunteer and Donor Joan Thaler – The Trees Forever Growing Futures program is a very creative program for “at risk”
teenagers. I became actively involved as a volunteer art therapist, and have grown
to be more enthusiastic than ever. The program gives young people, who often
have poor self-esteem, an opportunity to become an important asset to the
community, to the country, and even to the planet. Through mentoring
opportunities with experts in environmental careers, they learn how to take care
of trees and woodlands along with natural areas like prairies and wetlands. They
also learn from experts in the fields of recycling, energy conservation, and
corporate responsibility. My time with these young folks has been very positive. They are open, cooperative,
thoughtful, and sensitive. They are becoming stronger and more self-confident as a result of participating in
this wonderful Trees Forever program.
I encourage everyone to get involved with Trees Forever projects and programs through volunteering time
and focusing on increasing general financial support. As a Trees Forever volunteer and supporter, I feel that I
am making a real difference in the lives of these young people, and in improving the environment. It has been
a pleasure and a privilege to be part of Growing Futures.
