Use textures you create, find existing textures in a magazine or use found objects. 8. If you choose to use collage, the final product should be a Xerox color copy of your work. This way the design will fit nice and flat into the CD case. 9. Put your name in pencil on the inside cover.

Texture Assignment

In design, texture is both physical and virtual. Tex-tures include the literal surface employed in the mak-ing of a printed piece or physical object as well as the optical appearance of that surface. Physical textures effect how a piece feels to thehand, while virtual tex-tures are optical effects or representations of textures. In may cases, two-dimensional form uses texture as a visual element that adds richness and dimension to work. Texture can also refer to pattern, which can be used as a background or as a more prominent role.

The goal of this assignment is to create patterns or textures through the interpretation of music and use those textures to communicate the genre. Think about the physical elements of music you choose (piano, b&w keys, guitars, strings, ribs, hammers, wires, etc.) as well as how the music makes you feel. If you were to show what your favorite genre of music looks like, what would it be? What kind of line weight would you use? What kind of materials would you use to create that line? Explore the use of repetition, contrast, balance (symmetrical & asymmetrical) and rhythm. Texture and pattern can create an incredible sense of movement and activity which should reflect your chosen genre.
