Page 1: Textile Chemists Start New Headquarters Building

John Tyndall British physicist, 1873

If this basic truth could be raised to the ninetieth power by the years since its utterance . . . it would scarcely overstate the intensity of the problem as it exists today. Yet men of talent and training . . . men of real breadth and depth in management, in sales and in technical "know-how" are to be secured. This . . . we are proving consistently in the service of our clients. For more about "ESP'1

and its functions, may we send you an explanatory brochure. A note from your secretary will bring it immediately.

1st Decennial Index to

CHEMICAL ABSTRACTS 1907-1916

. . is now available on Microcards. For those equipped with desk or hand readers these 60-odd 3 x 5 cards are a convenient substitute for the four-volume book edition of this index. They take up little more room than a pack of playing cards and can be easily stored and transported.

The 1st Decennial Index consists of the Author Index and the Subject Index, and covers the whole sweep of CA's first ten years. Its appearance on Microcards represents an experiment with this modern documentation technique. Other CA indexes may follow later in this form.

Price: $135.00

Kaswell, president of Fabric Research Laboratories and president of the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists, breaks ground for the new AATCC headquarters building at Research Triangle Park, N.C. Looking on (from left) are George P. Paine, AATCC executive secretary; U.S. Secretary of Commerce Luther H. Hodges; Archie K. Davis, board chairman of Wachovia Bank & Trust and president of Research Triangle Foundation; and George J. Mandikos, technical secretary of AATCC.

BRIEFS

Chemical Specialties Manufacturers Association will hold its 49th midyear meeting at the Drake Hotel, Chicago, May 20 to 22. A feature of the meeting will be the release of six production surveys covering aerosols, antifreeze, brake fluids, cooling system chemicals, fuel line antifreeze, and windshield cleaning preparations. Committee meetings will be held most of the opening day, with divisional meetings set for May 21 and 22. The program includes about 40 technical papers.

American Association for Cancer Research will hold its 54th annual meeting May 23 to 25 at the Royal York Hotel, Toronto, Ont. For further information write the association's secretary-treasurer, Hugh J. Creech, Institute for Cancer Research, Fox Chase, Philadelphia 11, Pa.

The Relation of Protein Structure to Function is the topic of a symposium to be held June 7 during the annual meeting of Chemical Institute of Canada at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto, Ont. The all-day program includes seven technical papers. Chairman of the symposium is Dr. M. J. Fraser, Department of Biochemistry, University of Manitoba Medical School, Winnipeg, Man.

National Plant Food Institute will hold its 8th annual convention at the Greenbrier, White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., June 9 to 12. For further details write NPFI, 1700 Κ St., N.W., Washington 6, D.C.

ZIRCONIUM-Hydroxychloride (Basic Chloride)

Solution — C. P. Oxychloride — Technical Oxychloride — High Purity Tetrachloride Tetrachloride — High Purity Acetatochloride (Available in developmental

quantities) A few of the many uses for these versatile compounds are:

Preparation of personal deodorants, astringents, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals · Preparation of water repellents for textiles • Preparation of lakes and toners from acid and basic dyes · Precipitation of acid dyes and preparation of zirconium soaps and other zirconium compounds.

Some of these compounds act as powerful Lewis acids and show typical properties of Lewis acids such as Friedel-Crafts synthesis.

NOTE: Hydroxychloride is less acid than Oxychloride and is therefore useful for cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. Acetatochloride is very water soluble and only mildly acid.
