Welcome to the 2013 Texas Venture Labs Investment Competition (TVLIC) at The University of Texas at Austin hosted by the Jon Brumley Texas Venture Labs.

What is the Jon Brumley Texas Venture Labs?

The Venture Labs Investment Competition—the premier venue for “Investor-Ready” companies founded by students

The TVL Accelerator—which pairs graduate students in Business, Law, Engineering and the Sciences with start-ups to solve fundamental business problems

New Venture Creation—a hands-on learning experience where graduate students refine and validate their business ideas before launching

What is the Venture Labs Investment Competition?

The Venture Labs Investment Competition (VLIC) is comprised of the annual Texas and Global competitions. These are graduate student-centric opportunities for new ventures from The University of Texas at Austin, and universities around the world, to obtain funding.

Texas Venture Labs Competition: February 7-8, 2013 – Texas VLIC teams are comprised of students from The University of Texas at Austin competing for a total of $135,000 in awards, as well as an automatic entry to the Global VLIC and the UT Horizon Competition.

Global Venture Labs Competition: May 2-4, 2013 – Global VLIC, “the Super Bowl of Investment Competitions” is the world’s premier investment competition. Teams from around the world descend on Austin to compete for awards totaling in excess of $150,000.

Texas Venture Labs Programs

TVL AcceleratorThe TVL Accelerator connects local start-up companies with talented and entrepreneurial graduate students from the Colleges of Business, Law, Engineering and the Natural Sciences. These students work with the company’s founders on semester long projects that address important issues facing the venture as they get ready for financing. The total amount raised by companies participating in this program in the last two years exceeds $37 million.

Join as a Startup: The deadline to apply for the Fall semester class is July 15, 2013. The application can be found at bit.ly/TVLentapp.

Venture Labs Investment CompetitionThe Texas and Global VLIC are annual competitions aimed at graduate student led new ventures from the University of Texas and around the world that are seeking funding. Some notable former competitors include Phurnace Software, uShip, eVapt, Ordoro and Halsa Pharmaceuticals.

Rajiv is a senior associate at S3 Ventures in Austin, TX, focusing on software, medical devices and technology service companies. He received a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and a B.A. in Economics from Rice University and an MBA from the University of Texas at Austin.

Isaac Barchas, Austin Technology Incubator

Isaac leads the Austin Technology Incubator (ATI) in the IC2 Institute of The University of Texas at Austin. Over the past five years, ATI has screened over 1,000 companies, and helped more than 80 member companies collectively raise $250 million. Before joining ATI, Isaac focused on building businesses with McKinsey & Company’s Healthcare and Global Organization teams. He received his B.A. from Stanford University and his M.A. and J.D. from the University of Chicago.

Jeremy Carter, Fallbrook Technologies

Jeremy is the Vice President of Product Development at Fallbrook Technologies in Austin, TX, where he has been since its founding in 2004. His past experiences include engineering and program management roles with Southwest Research Institute and numerous engagements as a commercialization consultant and strategist with small and medium sized businesses. He received his B.S. and M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Texas A&M University and an M.S. in Technology Commercialization at the University of Texas in Austin

Ed Cavazos, Bracewell & Giuliani

Ed represents clients in general business and corporate transactions with an emphasis on complex technology-related matters involving intellectual property. He routinely counsels clients regarding formation, early stage financing and a variety of other issues faced by growing technology companies. Ed also has an active IP litigation practice. Randall Crowder, Texo Ventures

Randall is a Managing Partner at TEXO Ventures, an Austin, TX-based healthcare venture firm. Prior to founding TEXO, he led the Central Texas Angel Network (CTAN) to become one of the most active networks in the country and co-founded Texas Venture Labs (TVL) at The University of Texas at Austin. Randall also served as an officer in the US Army. He received his B.S. from USMA at West Point and an MBA from UT at Austin. He is a Kauffman Fellow and a member of the Young Entrepreneur Council.

Michael D’Eath, SailPoint Technologies

Michael is VP of Corporate Development at SailPoint in Austin, TX chairs the non-profit Kerrville Folk Festival (TFMF) and operates a business development consultancy. Michael’s 35+year career includes executive roles at many startups, including Novell, Tivoli, Waveset and Mirage Networks. Educated primarily in England, he is a rancher and professional musician.

Cybele Diamandopoulos, FOLIO Communications

Cybele is the founder of FOLIO Communications in Austin, Texas, where she and her team lead high-profile communication programs, product launches and marketing campaigns for emerging technology companies. She received her B.A. in History from The University of Texas at Austin.

Charles Dickerson – Qcue, Inc.

Charles is the COO at Qcue in Austin, TX. A seasoned executive, Charles has more than 20 years of experience working with high-growth, early stage companies across a variety of product management roles. He holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Houston.

Mike Fitzpatrick, Financial Consultant

Mike is a financial consultant in Austin, TX, providing a broad experience to venture capital in finance, accounting, treasury, tax, legal and SEC reporting. He received his B.S. in Finance from Bowling Green State University and MBA from Rochester Institute of Technology.

Morgan joined Silverton in 2006. Prior to Silverton, Morgan worked with FTV Capital in San Francisco, where he focused on growth investments in technology and financial services. Prior to that, Morgan held various executive positions at Ingrian Networks (acquired by SafeNet) and Kintana (acquired by Mercury Interactive Corp.). Morgan received his B.S. from Stanford University.

Zaz Floreani – Austin Ventures

Zaz is the director of Business Development at Austin Ventures and VP of Membership for TeXchange in Austin, TX. She has broad experiences in marketing and operations for software and consumer web startups. Zaz received her B.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles, M.A. in Middle Eastern Studies and MBA from The University of Texas at Austin.

Gary Forni, CTAN

Gary is an experienced executive in the global technology industry and active early-stage investor in Austin, TX. Start-ups that attract his attention have an urgent and prevalent customer problem. He received his B.S. from the University of California Santa Barbara in Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Luz Cristal Glangchai, Trinity University

Cristal is the director of the Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at Trinity University in San Antonio, TX. In addition, she is the CTO, inventor and founder of NANOTaxi, a nanoparticle drug-delivery platform. She received her B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, and M.S. and Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin.

Jeff Harbach, CTAN

Jeff is the Executive Director of the Central Texas Angel Network (CTAN) and brings over 10 years of entrepreneurial experience. Prior to joining CTAN, Jeff led multiple startups in diverse industries and co-founded Texas Venture Labs (TVL). He received his B.S. from Brigham Young University and MBA from The University of Texas at Austin.

Scott Harmon – Noesis Energy

Scott is currently CEO of Noesis Energy, a venture-backed 'Big Data' energy analytics firm he co-founded in 2012. Prior to Noesis, Scott was a CEO-in-Residence at Austin Ventures, where he focused on SaaS and Analytics opportunities in industrial markets. Scott has 20 years of senior leadership experience with enterprise technology companies, graduated from Iowa State University and holds a B.S. in Computer Science.

Ed Healy – MediaTek

Ed has been in management, marketing and engineering roles in the semiconductor industry for over 20 years. Prior to Mediatek, Healy co-founded and was the CEO of Acertus Technologies and was CEO of Cubic Wafer Inc. He holds a B.S. degree in Engineering from the United States Military Academy, M.S. in Electrical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, an MBA from Santa Clara University and a M.S. in Management from Stanford University.

Shelley Hossenlopp, Spot On Sciences

Shelley has over 24 years of experience in medical device sales, marketing and business development. She currently consults for Spot On Sciences and poca international on in-vitro diagnostics and medical devices. She serves on the Board of INVO Biosciences and Greater Killeen Free Clinic. She received her B.S. in Biology and Biomedicine from Oklahoma State University and a M.S. in Administration from Central Michigan University.

Tom Inman, Limestone Ventures

Tom Inman has over 10 years of venture capital investing experience and over 13 years of operational experience. Prior to his venture capital career, he gained valuable experience at Motorola as a business systems analyst and served for over seven years as a pilot in the U.S. Navy. He received his M.B.A. and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin.

Rick Lundbom, LivingDirect.com

Rick is the Founder and CEO of Austin, TX based LivingDirect.com. Founded in 1999, LivingDirect.com has grown into one of the most successful niche e-commerce businesses in the country ranked number 239 by Internet Retailer. Previously, Rick was a consultant at Accenture after receiving his BBA from The University of Texas at Austin.

Monique Maley, Articulate Persuasion

Monique uses her diverse experience as an entrepreneur, actress and marketing professional to transform individuals and businesses as a Principal at ArticulatePersuasion. She received her B.A. from Tufts University and certificate in Public Communication Strategies from The University of Texas at Austin.

Jay Manickam, uShip

Jay is the Co-Founder and VP of Strategy and Operations at uShip in Austin, TX. Prior to uShip, Jay led financial management consulting teams at Anderson/Deloitte & Touche. He received his B.A. in Chemistry and Philosophy and M.A. in Accounting from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, as well as, his MBA from The University of Texas at Austin.

Patrick Motola, BlueSpace

Pat is President and CEO of BlueSpace, a business that has pioneered a breakthrough approach for applications that span security domains for the defense and intelligence community. Pat earned a master’s degree in management science from Stanford University, a master’s degree in computer science from The University of Texas at Austin and a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and computer science from the University of California, Berkeley.

Chantal Pittman, Unique Influence

Chantal is the COO and co-founder of Unique Influence, a digital marketing consultancy in Austin, TX. Prior to UI, Chantal co-founded IO Lighting, an LED lighting company and OnePoint Communications. Both had successful exits to Fortune 500 companies. She has an MBA from UT at Austin as well as a B.S. and M.S. from M.I.T.

Robert Reeves – Datical

As Datical’s Chief Technical Officer, Robert advocates for customers and provides technical architecture leadership. Prior to co-founding Datical, Robert was a Director at the Austin Technology Incubator and cofounded Phurnace Software, which won the Texas Venture Labs Investment Competition in 2005. Robert received his B.A. and MSTC degrees from The University of Texas at Austin.

Glenn Reinus, Reinus Strategy Partners

Glenn Reinus brings 20 years of sales management and business development experience in the telecommunications, networking and Internet software markets. Reinus has significant experience working with early stage companies and has been in the internet market since 1995. He holds a B.S. in Marketing and Business Administration from California State University, Northridge.

Kerry Rupp, DreamIt Ventures

Kerry is a Managing Partner at DreamIt Ventures in Austin, TX. In addition to years of experience in marketing, operations and startup operations, Kerry is the founder of Holiday Golightly, an online travel service. She received her B.A. in Biology from Duke University and MBA from Harvard Business School.

Venu Shamapant, Live Oak Venture Partners

Venu is the co-founder and general partner of LiveOak Venture Partners in Austin, TX. Prior to LiveOak, Venu was a General Partner with Austin Ventures where he invested in software, systems and wireless companies. Venu also worked for McKinsey & Co. as an engagement manager. He received his B.S. in Engineering from Osmania University, India, M.S. in Computer Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin and MBA from the Harvard Graduate School of Business.

Jerry Sullivan, Retired Venture Capitalist

Jerry retired as a general partner at Adams Capital Management in Austin, TX. Before working in venture capital, Jerry spent many years in executive level positions in the information technology, semiconductor and consumer electronic industries both internationally and in the US. He received his B.S. in Engineering, M.S. in Mathematics and Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Colorado and the AMP from Harvard Business School.

Texas Venture Labs Scholarship Competition

The Jon Brumley Texas Venture Labs was created in the Fall of 2010 to serve a three-fold mission by: transforming graduate students from across the university into entrepreneurs and business leaders, accelerating new and innovative startups to a yes-no funding decision and fostering a culture of entrepreneurship and commercialization within The University of Texas at Austin.

In service of this mission, the Jon Brumley Texas Venture Labs and the McCombs School of Business created the Texas Venture Labs Scholar Program. This award allows aspiring entrepreneurs to compete for an MBA scholarship and access to a variety of resources that will enable them to further refine and eventually launch their own business.

The total potential value of each TVL Scholar Award is $175,000. Winners have 18 months to apply, be accepted by and enroll as a full-time student at the McCombs School of Business to claim these awards.
