THE UNIVERSITY The University was founded in 1585 by Archduke Karl II and reestablished as a university institution in 1827 by Emperor Franz I, thus the name KarIFranzensUniversität'. One of the oldest universities in Central Europe, Graz combines five centuries of scholarly tradition with a looking forward commitment to teaching and research. The university houses ninety-five academic departments and fifteen university clinics -vital intellectual centers that enjoy an international reputation and which in turn are generally subdivided into departments and working groups. Furthermore, there are eight university facilities for special tasks. Currently the university has around 30,000 students and 3,000 employees.

THE CITY Graz is the second largest city in Austria (pop. 250,000) and has a student population of about 50.000 (the majority of which - over 30,000 - study at Karl Franzens-University). Graz offers the atmosphere and first class facilities of a vibrant modern city (opera, theatres, cultural festivals, lively pub-scene...) with the charm and architectural beauty of a historic town. The city center is one of the most preserved in Central Europe and only a 10 minutes walk away from the university. Graz is a clean, safe and beautiful city, which is small enough to feel at home, but large enough to provide students with plenty of entertainment during study breaks. Graz is the capital of the province of Styria, which lies in the southeast of Austria and is often referred to as the 'green heart of Austria' due to its abundance of forests. The city of Graz itself is surrounded by green hills, so walking climbing and cycling/mountain biking are popular outdoor activities. And, of course, we also have 'real' mountains with excellent mountaineering and skiing facilities quite close. Besides, due to the special geological conditions in the south of Styria there are a number of thermal spas near Graz - for those who prefer

steam baths, Jacuzzis, saunas and 30°C warm water to the skiing slopes. And for those who want to venture out further - Graz is ideally located for trips all over Europe: Vienna, Austria's capital, is only a 2,5 hour's train ride away, Slovenia only 1 hour. Other popular destinations include Italy, Czech Republic, Hungary, Croatia, Germany, Switzerland, etc.

INSURANCE

Students from NON-EU/EEA-countries, who are nominated for a full academic year stay as well as ISEP students nominated for both, a semester or full-year stay, have to register for the Austrian health insurance (at ‘Gebietskrankenkasse’ – GKK: www.stgkk.at). For regular students this is offered for approx. € 51 per month (at the time of printing) also including eye and dental coverage (excluding medical evacuation and repatriation – you would have to get that extra with a travel insurance, for example). We will give you more detailed information about the Austrian health care system during orientation and we will help you to fill out the application form. After you have registered with GKK, you will receive an insurance card, which you have to take with you when you consult a doctor. If you get a prescription from a doctor, the prescription fee to be paid for the medication is € 5,10 (at the time of printing). Should you need to be hospitalized most of the arising costs are covered by the GKK, but a small fee has to be paid by the patient! GKK insurance also covers costs when you need to see a doctor during your travels in other European countries.

As mentioned before, the student union fee also includes accident insurance (covering accidents at and on the way to and from the university): http://www.oeh.ac.at/studieren/studierendenversicherung (in German only)

If you stay in Austria during the summer term, you are strongly advised to get a tick vaccination. For effective protection against tick bites (they can cause encephalitis) you need two shots: the first one around March and a booster 3–4 weeks later. If you currently take medication, please bring an additional prescription and a letter from your doctor explaining why you need to take this medication (prescription dosages etc.). In case you run out of medication, it will be easier for you to get what you need. If possible, bring enough medication with you to last throughout your stay. Drug stores are called ‘Apotheke’ in Austria. You can get prescription drugs there, but they also sell aspirin and general painkillers over the counter.

EXPECTED COSTS

As for budgeting your stay in Graz, your expenses will largely depend on the type of housing you choose (single or double room in a student dorm, private accommodation) and on whether you eat out a lot or cook for yourself (which is what most Austrian students do). To be on the safe side, you should calculate approx. € 700 – € 800 per month (including housing, food and personal expenses).
