Hello and Welcome to Texas State University!

We are excited for you to join our fraternity and sorority community! Greek Life is a vibrant and important part of our campus. The administrators, faculty and staff members of Texas State University look to the members of our fraternity and sorority community as leaders among leaders. This distinction as leaders also comes with responsibility and accountability in all that we do. I challenge you to seek out leadership positions across our campus and in particular, I encourage you to consider membership in one of our outstanding fraternities and then pursue one of the hundreds of leadership positions offered within our own Greek community.

This is a great time to become a member of the fraternity and sorority community here at Texas State University! We are in the midst of many positive changes to our community including new resources and staffing to support our fraternities and sororities as well as providing new opportunities for our student leaders to excel both within and out-side of the classroom. As fraternity and sorority members we are charged with the responsibility of adapting to an ever-changing environment. We are challenged to design and redesign programs to meet the needs of the changing face of our local and global communities. On behalf of the Interfraternity Council (IFC), I would like to congrat-ulate you on your decision to attend Texas State University and welcome you to the Bobcat family. One of the most important decisions you have made at this stage in your life is to begin your collegiate academic journey, great choice. You could not have chosen a more beautiful campus to spend the next four years than right in the heart of the Texas Hill Country. The next four years will be instrumental in shaping and molding your intellec-tual capacity, principles, and personal skills for your adult life. Attaining skills such as managing budgets, running effective meetings, public speak-ing and motivation others are a few of the opportunities young men who join an IFC fraternity can expect to gain. There is no better way to build and strengthen those characteristics than going Greek.

When choosing to join an IFC fraternity you are choosing to join a group that spans the nation and unites men in a common bond, it’s a bond that doesn’t just last for your college career, but for life. Networking is highly important in today’s business world. By using resources present in the Texas State Greek system, you can expand your network and create rela-tionships with alums, family members, university faculty and staff as well as friends of your “brothers”. IFC Recruitment Registration & Fees:

The first step in the recruitment process is registration:

1. Complete the online registration form found at ifc.dos.txstate.edu

2. You may also pay the registration fee online or by sending in a check.

The cost of registration is $50 and is due before August 23, 2013.

The registration fee is non-refundable and is used by IFC to cover the costs of the recruitment process.

In order to be eligible to receive a formal bid students must attend the first day, Round I of IFC Formal Recruitment on Sunday, August 25th from 12 p.m. – 4:30p.m. in the LBJ Student Center. Failure to attend Round I of IFC Formal Recruitment, will result in a n additional bid acceptance fee of $50, paid by the participant, to the IFC.

Failure to register for recruitment will result in a $110 fee to accept a bid, as well as a fine assessed to the chapter you join in the amount of $50.

Once registration is complete registrants information will be distributed to each chapter for their review. At no time during formal recruitment period is a chapter able to give out a bid nor are you able to accept one. Failure to follow this guide-lines will result in forfeiting your ability to become a new member for following academic year.

Questions to Consider:1. What are the academic requirements for joining the fraternity, getting initiated and becoming an active member?

2. What are the dues for the fraternity my first semester and semesters to follow?

3. What are the time commitments per week for fraternity activities and when will initiation occur?

4. What does the chapter do to promote and assist with academic excellence?

5. What does the chapter do to provide service to the community?

6. Is it possible to maintain a job while joining a fraternity?

7. If the chapter has a house, is it mandatory to live-in the house.

Tips for a Successful Recruitment Experience:1. Understand that time management is essential to your academic success and must be your first priority.

2. Register for recruitment as early as possible to maximize the financial benefit as well as earlier contact with the fraternities.

3. Meet with every fraternity several times to determine which is right for you.

4. Ask questions! Gather all the information you are seeking so you can make an informed decision.

5. Be yourself. Fraternities want to find men who will contribute to the mission and purpose of their chapters.

6. Involve your parents or guardians in your recruitment process. Talk about what you are seeing and hearing and allow them to assist you in thinking through the process.

Message from IFC Vice-President of Recruitment, Sean CotterCongratulations on your acceptance to Texas State University-San Marcos! I hope you are as excited as we are about the upcoming Fall 2013 semester. Fraternity life at Texas State is stronger than ever and we are encouraging you to be a part of it. Members of fraternal organizations are woven into almost every aspect of college life here at Texas State, including the Associated Student Government, Athletics, and the Dean’s List. Fraternity leaders strive to be the best in every field of study and activity.

Academics are the most important aspect of each fraternity on campus. After all, the primary purpose for attend-ing a university is to further one’s education. That is why the active chapter GPA along with the average new member GPA has been set by Interfraternity Council (IFC) and its member chapters at a minimum of 2.25. This requirement is in an effort to reinforce the importance of academics in the fraternity community. Community ser-vice and philanthropy are also major components of fraternity life in San Marcos. Every Greek organization has at least one, and in most cases many, philanthropic organizations chapters have committed to working with assist in creating a better communities both locally and nationally.

By joining a fraternity, you have opportunities to be involved in life changing events, as well as making lifelong friendships. Personally, joining a fraternity was the best nonacademic decisions I have made since coming to Texas State. Membership has given me a better understanding of responsibility, an improved grasp of time management and I have learned how to respect and work well with others. Finally, I feel that I grew up more in my first semes-ter as a member of a fraternity than I did in four years I attended high school.

If you are looking for a great college experience, as well as a way to improve your grades, and make lifelong friend-ships, I encourage you to go through formal recruitment with the IFC. Message from IFC Vice-President of Service, Keven KandlerAs you may have read and seen already, joining a fraternity can reap many benefits in a young man’s life. Not only will you meet an array of different people and have brothers for life, but you will also experience the different aspect of what being a fraternity man is all about. One of those particular experiences is the ability to serve others. Each of the 14 fraternities at Texas State was founded on the principles of Scholarship, Brotherhood, Leadership, and Service.

Service is not something to be taken lightly; it is an action. We want you to understand the purpose behind service: to experience helping others and giving back to a community that loves you and Texas State. Joining a fraternity can mold you into becoming a leader. Giving back to your community can be one of the most gratifying experiences in your collegiate life.

Each year all of our Texas State fraternities participate with their national philanthropy through events to raise awareness and money for a specific organization. Each fraternity’s respective website contains information about their national philanthropy. We encourage you to research each of these. This past year, each of our fraternities participated in the largest community service project at Texas State; Bobcat Build. This event is a standing tra-dition at Texas State and provides an avenue for all Texas State students to give back to the local San Marcos community.

Welcome, Bobcat Class of 2017!

We are excited to welcome you to your new home, Texas State University! You have made the greatest decision of your life to attend this extraordinary university. Your best years are ahead of you.

You are beginning your journey at Texas State during its most prime time. We just set a new record for enrollment, and we have recently become a Hispanic Serving Institution, an Emerging Research Institution, and just this past year we moved to Division 1 in our Athletics program. You are just the second class who will have the opportunity of enjoying football games at our newly renovated Bobcat Stadium.

Take the opportunity to get involved in your university. Getting involved in student organizations has countless rewards from making new friends to growing as a leader and as an individual. For us, getting involved in a student organization helped ease the transition process of leaving home and coming to college.

Your Associated Student Government (ASG) is always happy to help you with any road bumps you may encounter. Our office is located on the fourth floor of the LBJ Student Center in Room 4-5.1. Please feel free to stop by our office and introduce yourself. We also have meeting every Monday night in the LBJ Student Center Teaching Theater that we encourage all of you to attend, so you can hear about what is going on at our university.

Remember that your academics should always remain your number one priority, and Texas State gives you many resources to make sure you do just that. Our famous alumnus, President Lyndon B. Established at the Virginia Military Institute in 1869, the found-ers decided to speak out against oppression and form the Legion of Honor, Sigma Nu Fraternity. Sigma Nu Fraternity is one that demands excellence out of its members from academics to intra-mural sports and everything in between. The Zeta Theta chapter has the largest alumni base at Texas State University with over 2,500 members. The Alumni provide a tail-gate in the fall and The Annual Pi Kappa Alpha Founders day golf tournament every spring. Beyond this our alumni are always available to give advice or to help network with undergraduate members. Pi Kappa Alpha contributes over 1200hrs of community service to the great people of San Marcos. We provide incentive and aid towards our members to excel in the class room, after all we are here to graduate first and foremost. We have members who serve as senators in ASG, are leaders in Paws Preview and organize Cat Camp. The simple fact is if there is an organization that can help the college experience be better for ourselves and other students at Texas State University, Pi Kappa Alpha has a hand in it. We aim to be good stewards to everyone and can boast being recognized by both the City of San Marcos as well as Leaders of the Texas State University school system.

The Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity was founded on March 9th, 1856 at the University of Alabama Tuscaloosa. Since that day al-most 150 years ago, more than 289,000 gentlemen have taken up the ΣAE mission to promote the highest standards of friendship, scholarship, and service to their fellow members. Based upon the ideals set forth by the Founders and as specifically enunciated in the SAE creed, these ideals are preserved by the more than 8,200 undergraduates currently spread across some 200 chapters within the US and Canada. ΣAE is North America’s largest social fraterni-ty.
