Dean of Students OfficeMission

The Dean of Students Office strives to set standards of excellence in the delivery of student services and to foster a welcoming environment that is inclusive, safe and conducive to learning. The core function of the Dean of Students Office is assisting and developing students through services that include emergency services, leadership development opportunities, legal advice, notary services, ombuds services, and resolutions to student misconduct allegations.

Conference Purpose

The primary purpose of the conference is to bring students together to learn leadership skills, engage in values-based activities that foster personal leadership development, build a unified community, cultivate social responsibility, and inspire students to adopt a new way of life while expanding their leadership potential.

Key Findings

• 97% of respondents stated they would attend a future Texas State Leadership Institute Conference, with the remaining 3% indicating this would not apply (graduating seniors).

• 92% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that the conference was well organized with the exception of the registration for sessions process.

• 80% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that the Friday/Saturday format was suitable for the conference.

Mark Updegrove

Mark Updegrove serves as the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library’s fourth Director in its 38 year history. He is an award-winning author with over two decades of leadership experience within top media and communications organizations including Time, Newsweek, Yahoo, and Nickelodeon and MTV Magazines.

Christy Pipkin

Christy Pipkin, along with husband Turk Pipkin, founded The Nobelity Project, an education and action nonprofit, to make movies that make a difference. Their current documentary, One Peace At A Time, explores the idea of providing fundamental rights for the world’s children as the best path to a more peaceful and sustainable world. Currently, The Nobelity Project is building Mahiga Hope High School in rural Kenya – the first high school ever in that community.

Christy Pipkin• 90% of attendees felt the her

presentation was relevant to the theme of the conference

presentation. I would love to see her come back and present a seminar session.”

• 19 Different sessions offered (One session cancelled as presenter was ill) during 24 time slots

• Focus on general leadership and service (7), ethics/integrity/inclusivity (4), and sustainability (8).

Suggestions for Improvement

• Registration process should be streamlined – preferably in advance

• Improve the quality and quantity of food• Get information and assignments to volunteers at an

earlier date• Sessions should be longer and more interactive• Have more student presenters and panelists• Invite more students from other universities to

participate and network
