The NFL is coming to LA...Again.

It’s been 16 years since the Raiders and Rams ditched the second largest market in America for greener pastures (i.e. Oakland). LA has never successfully

supported an NFL franchise for multiple reasons. Some say the people of LA simply like it that way. Many are transplants who root for other teams and even those that aren’t like the advantage of not having a home team that takes precedence on Sundays. Personally, I think it has less to do with all of that, and more to do with the fact that there is simply a whole lot one could do in the City of Angels on a Sunday afternoon other than watch football. LA isn’t Minnesota.

LA may be Jacksonville, though. As in Jaguars. Yes, the Jaguars could be the team that relocates to LA to make magic happen. A 33 team league is simply not desirable for anyone, and the relocation makes sense, at least to Magic Johnson.

The former Laker great has sold all of his shares of Starbucks and given up his stake in his home-team in order to pursue this NFL-to-LA dream. Here’s the deal, this is going to happen folks. That’s all there is to it. This is Magic Johnson. He’s like the Tom Landry of LA—except not deceased (RIP, Tom). Magic has a massive network of ridiculously wealthy individuals just waiting to have their name on a brick somewhere outside of some new stadium about three miles away from Denzel Washinton’s newest crib. Regardless of when this actually goes through, pay attention this month as it unfolds, should be one sweet dish, no Magical pun intended.

Durant And usa-LikE We do it everyday

For awhile now, the NBA has been infamously renowned for its flashy group of ragz-ta’-richez, flash-first personas; however, the current group of men representing Team USA Basketball are

anything but flashy. There is no question head coach Mike Krzyzewski had a lot to do with how this team looked on the court; and just as interesting was how they looked on the bench. Chauncey Billups, Tyson Chandler, Lamar Odom and Rudy Gay are about the only guys I even feel comfortable listing as “veterans.” Some of the rest of the roster carried names like Eric Gordon, Russell Westbrook, Kevin Love and Derrick Rose. They were corralled and carried by former Horn, Kevin Durant, though. And it was inside his Jansport backpack that Team USA won the World Championships recently held in Turkey. Durant averaged a team-high 23 points per contest and was also named MVP of the 2010 World Championships. He also contributed 6 boards per game and shot 56% from the field while pulling up clutch from behind the arc, sinking 46% of his 3-point attempts. Oh yeah, and that old pesky foul line didn’t waiver the kid’s concentration, where he shot over 91%.

Somewhere between Austin and Istanbul, this Durant kid has gone from that long, lanky collegiate scorer to worldwide stardom. I believe he may have taken home an NBA scoring title in there somewhere too. Regardless, it is certainly nice to see a quiet, humble gentleman such as KD be so successful, so early. You’re not hearing any rape allegations nor are you hearing of him jetting the desert of Oklahoma City for blue beaches and topless night clubs; and you certainly aren’t hearing of him getting into any tussles with his teammates. Nay, Kevin Durant is the real deal. At 22.

Diet Coke from McDonalds

Diet Coke from anywhere elseMcDonald's Diet Coke is literally like nectar from God. Notice

how we say God with a capital “G”! That’s because we think that only someone all powerful, omnipresent and able to create the earth in 7 days could actually put into the brains of we lowly humans even the combination of the correct ingredients to make diet coke. Furthermore, to put into the minds of the folks at McDonalds the exact way to mix the perfect syrup carbonation combination could only come from God we are convinced. Some say it is bad for you…I say, one taste and it will give you faith that there is someone more powerful and smarter than we are! Diet Coke from McDonalds is Cool.

Brett, you should have gone out on top…well, close to the top. You really don’t know how much of a smile you put on my face now. Not only does your season look like its going straight down the drain, but now you are trying your best Tiger Woods impersonation. First off Brett, you’re 41 years old; NO ONE wants to see your man-junk, hell, even your wife probably doesn’t anymore. Instead, you send some pictures to a beautiful, young sports reporter. Hey Brett, your moment of glory was a long time ago; no one thinks you’re hot stuff anymore. You have great offensive weapons, even with Sidney Rice out, you have a great offensive line, yet you guys started the season horribly. You might want to send a thank you gift to Washington for knocking out Aaron Rodgers. Oh wait, Rodgers is a big boy and not letting his concussion affect him? Oh well, at least one win against the Cowgirls counts for something. News flash, this isn’t the 90’s anymore, and you aren’t young anymore. It’s been time for you to fade into the sunset for awhile now, yet you just ignore those messages. So keep having fun with this year as you try to scrap something presentable together, and beating the now 1-4 Cowboys by a field goal doesn’t count.

If you want a positive for this year Brett, at least you might have gained a new sponsorship; if all else fails, Viagra is always there.

Playaz and guests alike, this being our eighth issue and all I figured it about time to bring

these letters from the editor full circle—with good ole’ Ron Washington. Earlier this year me poked fun at his inability to justify his cocaine use amongst other things, and to be honest I thought nothing of the up-and-coming Rangers. They’ve been up-and-coming for awhile now, and I was just going to wait until I saw glory before I called for it Ruth style over left-center field. Welp, now it’s here. Regardless of how the season finishes out, this has been a fan-freakin’-tastic season for my beloved Rangers. In a city that has been force-fed disappointment like a little kid fighting off vegetables, Nolan Ryan has already succeeded where little kids Jerry Jones and Mark Cuban have failed. Now, I’m not arguing greatness of operations between the Rangers, Cowboys and Mavericks; I’m simply stating that I’m finally excited about a professional sport in my darling city of Big D that will not close their season in nausea—finally.

And to you, Gipper, thanks. I dig your style. You’ve been an unwavering support system for your crew and this team-first, home-run tallies second approach has made this hustling bunch of run-manufacturers become a brotherhood of beasts this postseason. You’re the man, Ron.

Well boys, it is November once again. That means it's the month of Thanksgiving.

Most months of the year have some significance somehow , but during November, the significance is very important not only with respect to our Founding Fathers, but this month should be a time for you to give thanks for all that you have to be thankful for. What better way to demonstrate a heart of thanks than finding somewhere that you can serve those less fortunate than you this month.

There are many places that would love to have you show your thanks by serving,

volunteering resources or just donating a little money to make their end of the year go well. TSP Mama highly recommends going somewhere and actually serving. You will appreciate what you have much more and you will feel like a better person for it.

There is the Turkey Trot this month too. It is a five mile run through downtown Austin, benefitting Caritas…The Wizard World Austin Comic-Con at the Austin Convention Center and the James Taylor Tribute Show…because you may need to take your wife or girlfriend somewhere. If you don’t have a wife or girlfriend, TSP Mama expects that you will stay as far away from anything to do with James Taylor as possible! Also, don’t forget to go out and shop the day after Thanksgiving on Black Friday. There are spectacular

deals this day that will help your Christmas shopping budget! So get out, enjoy your November and remember…make TSP Mama proud!

TSP Mama will gladly give you advice on anything, from what kind of oil to fill your car with to what to buy your girlfried or secretary. Submit your questions to [email protected].

What will resonate as the Texas

Rangers’ best season in franchise history to date paradoxically began with inauspicious

omens of an emotional cocaine scandal and team bankruptcy. Not only did manager Ron Washington’s Rangers snap an 11-year playoff drought by capturing the American League West title, but the team accomplished what no other Rangers ballclub could since being adopted in 1972: they won a playoff series and advanced to their first ever American League Championship Series. Call it a poetic injustice from a historical perspective that their reward was a collision-course with their 90's nemesis, the New York Yankees, for passage to the World Series. Their wunderkind General Manager Jon Daniels, who, at 28 years-of-age, was hired by former Rangers owner Tom Hicks in 2005, concocted the personnel formula that bore fruit for the 2010 Rangers. The Texas playoff teams of the 90s—1996, 1998, and 1999—were primarily assembled to out-slug the opposition; and when Juan Gonzalez, Ivan Rodriguez, and Rusty Greer, among others, failed to generate postseason thunder, the results were three hapless Division Series loses to Joe Torre’s Yankees (including two sweeps). An organizational sea change occurred in 2007 when Daniels converted

Hicks to a build-from-within approach that would emphasize fixating on the draft and the inexhaustibly rich crop of Latin American talent. Daniels traded all-star first baseman Mark Teixiera that same year to Atlanta for assorted prospects that included 2010 rookie standout closer Neftali Feliz and starting shortstop Elvis Andrus; a subsequent deal Daniels enacted that year unloaded closer Eric Gagne on Boston in exchange for then Triple-A outfielder David Murphy and other prospects. Feliz, 22, dazzled during 2010’s regular season by recording a Major League rookie-record forty saves—making him a popular candidate for AL Rookie of the Year honors. The equally youthful Elvis Andrus (22) figures to be an entrenched amenity at shortstop for many years on the strength of his superior defensive range and maturing bat. But Daniels unquestioned masterpiece from 2007 was the acquisition of Josh Hamilton from Cincinnati—he of the superlative 2010: league-leader in batting average (.359) and slugging (.633)—for pitcher Edison Volquez. Hamilton is the gossip frontrunner to win the AL MVP, despite being wracked by a rib injury that sidelined him for most of September; incidentally, his replacement in left-field—David Murphy (also a 2007 product)— filled in beautifully for the hampered all-star, having hit .355 with 17 RBI’s in Hamilton’s long-shadow. In sum, the Rangers methodology has intelligently shifted from stockpiling power

in favor of a mentality that values top-to-bottom balance. Daniels sought to remedy perceived areas of weakness during the 2010 regular season through aggressive maneuvers strangely unimpeded by the Rangers’ rigid internal budget. To round-out a smattering of patchwork solutions that included Bengie Molina, Jorge Cantu, Andres Blanco, and Jeff Francoeur, Daniels lassoed postseason magician, and Yankee-killer, Cliff Lee from Seattle on July, 9th—instantly upgrading the Rangers into a viable championship contender. Retroactively add 8-time All-Star Vladimir Guerrero—an Anaheim reject signed by Texas in January, thought to be washed-up following right-knee surgery in 2008, who circumvented injury in 2010, having hit .300 with 29 home-runs and 115 RBI’s over 152 games played—and Daniels seems a man befitting of Major League Baseball’s executive of the year. The Brave New Rangers are in the throes of a revolution under their new management of Ryan, Daniels, and Washington. But only after the Rangers finally exorcise their demons by ousting the Yankees in the playoffs, whether it’s this year, next, or in 2016, will the baseball revolution in Texas be fully realized.

The Cowboys owner has all of the qualities of today's politician. He's high energy, well-financed, is completely engaging and has that

never say die spirit. Jerry also has the one quality that seems to be a must in today's political scene: the universal inability to admit disaster when he's had a big part in it.

Like every good candidate, Mr. Jones has campaigned hard this year, heck, he had us believing that this team was destined for the Super Bowl. Once the April 2010 draft harvested Dez Bryant's talents, it seemed it would only be a matter of playing the games, honestly, what team in the NFC was better on paper than the Dallas Cowboys?

What happened to the Hope? It suffered a head on collision with Reality.

The Dallas Cowboys are not a good team. Despite their returning pro-bowlers, nine, count em, nine, the rest of the roster is mediocre. The offensive line is old and slow, often injured and as deep as a Justin Bieber song. The secondary is overrated and underperforming. The special teams roster has turned over so many times, it's actually jumbled the state's count of 'jobs created or saved.'

And the coaching? Wade Phillips is a great defensive mind, he really is. He's just shouldn't be the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. It obviously isn’t working; week after week we get exposed to more lame excuses than Lindsay Lohan's probation officer.

Some ugly evidence of the head coach’s lack of authority was uncovered a few weeks ago. Fox Sports’ Pam Oliver reported from the sidelines during a game that players who committed penalties in the week’s practices were taken out of team drills. From the Oliver interview of Wade Phillips, it sounded like the coach had finally cracked the whip, having tired of the undisciplined play. The story was contradicted the following Monday, when players interviews revealed that no such thing had actually taken place. I don’t know what’s worse, the fact that the coaches implied they did something which never occurred, or that the players found the claim humorous.

In December of 2008, after a season ending 44-6 pounding by the Philadelphia Eagles, many expected Wade Phillips to be gone. What fans got instead was the vow that Phillips would ‘change’ as a leader, he’d be more disciplined, harder working…sounds like a vow we men may have made unsuccessfully in relationships past, yes? And with similar results, true colors come flying out eventually and here we are again—the Dallas Cowboys are sloppy, uninspired and destined for another ugly season end.

This year let’s hope Mr. Jones gets it. It’s time to hire a true leader as head coach, one who you don’t have to coax out of the rocking chair like you did with Bill Parcells in 2003.And if the team owner will let that coach run the team, build around the talent and instill fear and accountability? Well, as they say on any campaign stop, that just might be change we can believe in!

Jerry Jones for Senate 2012(why not?) Times Are Changing

In 2008, the New Orleans Saints finished with an 8-8 record and dead last in the NFC South Division. The

next season, they won their first 13 games on their way to a 13-3 regular season, an NFC South title, oh yeah, and a Super Bowl ring.

The potential for any team to go from last to first in the span of one offseason makes the NFL so appealing and the most popular sport in America today.

Now, consider this. In three straight seasons, from 1996-1998, the then-Tennessee Oilers finished with an 8-8 record and on the outside of the playoffs, looking in. The very next season, Tennessee posted a 12-4 regular season record and, riding the coattails of the Music City Miracle, made the only Super Bowl in the history of the franchise.

Let’s look at the city Tennessee left behind in 1996 and their current team knowing what we now know.

Houston Texans fans, remember the perennial last place finishes in the AFC South? Remember averaging just over 4 wins a season from 2002-2006? Remember David Carr and Dom Capers? If so, it’s probably not without a grimace, a sickening feeling in your stomach, and a few choice words…

Take heart, Texans fans, for that is not this day. In 2007 and 2008, the Texans finished 8-8 and showed a little life for the first time in the young franchise’s history. Gary Kubiak has brought credible improvements to the team in each of his 4 seasons as head coach in Houston and Matt Schaub has proven to be the team’s first-ever viable quarterback. No longer is Houston expected to wrap up the season in the cellar of the AFC South. No, this Texans team is different today.

In 2009, Houston stars Schaub, Mario Williams, Andre Johnson, and Demeco Ryans matched with 2009 AFC Defensive Rookie of the Year Brian Cushing pushed the Texans to their first-ever winning season, finishing 9-7 and behind only Peyton Manning and the powerhouse Colts in the division. Granted, mediocrity is nothing to be celebrated and this Texans’ squad has not accomplished any great feat yet.

Only time will tell if this Texans team can finish the season strong; but for Texans’ fans used to disappointment year after year, I leave you with a little Bob Dylan…

“The times, they are a-changin’.” And so far, only for the better.

Well it is flu season and it’s not too late to get a flu shot. Check out the following

questions and answers as you consider whether or not you should get vaccinated this season.

How do you tell whether you have the flu or a cold? Both are respiratory illnesses but they are caused by different viruses. In general, the flu is worse than the common cold and is associated with fever, body aches, tiredness, and a dry cough. In contrast, people with a cold typically have a runny and stuffy nose. Colds generally do not result in serious health problems such as pneumonia, bacterial infections, and hospitalizations.

A common question is “What sort of flu season is expected this year?” Unfortunately, flu seasons are unpredictable and depend on many factors, including what influenza viruses are spreading and whether they match viruses in the vaccine. For example, last season we saw the emergence of the 2009 H1N1 influenza virus (previously called the swine flu). While uncertain, it is likely that the 2009 H1N1 viruses will continue to be around in the 2010-2011 flu season (CDC, August 12, 2010).

The timing of flu is unpredictable and varies each season with the ‘best protection being vaccination’. The flu vaccine protects against the three prevalent flu strains that research indicates will cause the most illness during the flu season. The 2010-2011 flu vaccine will protects against an H3N2 virus, an influenza B virus, and the H1N1 virus that caused many illnesses last year. If the flu vaccines are close matches to these viruses, their effectiveness should be between 70 to 90 percent for healthy adults.

Now some of you shot-haters are asking, “If they don’t know for sure which virus, will it do me any good to get vaccinated?” YES! It is important to be vaccinated even when we do not know if the vaccine is a “good” match because protective antibodies made in response to vaccination with one strain of flu viruses can provide protection against different, but related strains of viruses. And even when there is a poor match, the CDC works with other people to monitor vaccine effectiveness and to create new vaccines during the season, if needed. For example, in response to the 2009 H1N1 virus last season (2009-2010), a new flu vaccine was subsequently developed which was a good match to the new virus (CDC, August 12, 2010).

What is the flu like for most people? Most people who get the flu will have a mild illness and recover in less than two weeks. Some people, however, are more likely to get flu complications such as pneumonia, bronchitis, and sinus and ear infections. Those people at higher risk are children younger than 5 (and especially under 2 years old), adults 65 and older, pregnant women, the chronically ill, and this past season, American Indians and Alaskan Natives (CDC, September 3, 2010a). So everyone over 6 months of age should get a flu shot as soon as it is available.

I heard that the flu season was the same as the football season. Is that right? It’s close but not correct. Most influenza occurs between November and May with January and February having the most cases. So, getting vaccinated in December, or even later, will still be beneficial in most years (CDC, August 10, 2010).

My buddy Ralph swears that the flu shot gave him the flu. Is he correct? NO! Ralph just has a poor memory. The influenza viruses contained in flu vaccines are inactivated (killed) viruses, which mean they cannot cause infection. But since it takes about two weeks for the body to gain protection from the vaccine, if Ralph was exposed to the flu bug shortly before getting vaccinated or within the two week window after receiving the vaccine, he likely thought that the vaccination caused his flu (CDC, September 9, 2010).

Hidden deep in Central Texas is a rumbling steed whose thundering footsteps can be felt throughout the plains of Texas. The Toros

have made their home in Austin now for more than five years and could not be more excited about the start of its’ sixth season. The Toros will tip-off this season in Maine against the Red Claws on November 19. The Toros first home game is on Saturday November 27, at noon against the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. The game will be played in their new home at Cedar Park Center.

This season, the Toros will welcome the arrival of new head Coach Brad Jones. Brad Jones was formally with the Utah Flash and led the team to a 28-22 winning record. The expectations are high for Coach Jones being that the Toros are coming off a successful 2009-2010 campaign. Players such as, the reigning D-League Rookie of the Year, Alonzo Gee and 2009-2010 All-Stars Curtis Jerrells and Dwayne Jones led the Toros to a winning season and a place in the D-League playoffs. Although the roster for the Toros will not be finalized until the November D-League Draft, Jones has to have some peace of mind knowing that Alonzo Gee and Curtis Jerrells sit on the San Antonio Spurs roster and could possibly be available to the Toros during the season. The Spurs purchased their NBA Development League affiliate in 2007.

Not only do the Toros win games, but they win in the communities of Central Texas as well. Programs such as Healthy Hoopsters, Ball Kids, True to the Game True to Your School, and their reoccurring youth clinics promote healthy living, academic success and high moral character amongst Texas Youth. “A successful season for the Toros is a season where we win on the court and positively impact the homes of the fans that support us. The Toros always aim to be successful.” Peter Lubell COO of the Austin Toros

You can catch the Toros in action throughout the upcoming season in their new home at Cedar Park Center. For schedule and ticket information call 512-236-8333 or go to www.austintoros.com.

Because every NBA team will visit San Antonio at some point during the

regular season, it’s a thrilling exercise to survey the field and cherry-pick which visiting teams and opposing players are noteworthy—and in some cases—worth the inflated cost of admission. Wednesday November 17th, 2010 vs. Chicago Bulls: Always a big draw by virtue of Chicago’s immortal association with Air Jordan, the Bulls plucked Forward Carlos Boozer from Utah in the offseason to compliment their biggest asset, guard Derrick Rose. Saturday November 20th, 2010 vs. Cleveland Cavaliers: The remains, the leftovers, the scraps. Better yet: the jilted lover whose still-beating heart was yanked out and taunted when Lebron James spurned the city of Cleveland to “take his talents to South Beach.” Though they haven’t exactly compiled a roster of Sean Penn’s, the PTSD-afflicted Cavaliers are certainly Dead Men Walking. Monday November 22nd, 2010 vs. Orlando Magic: 10 years ago, catchy monikers like “Air Canada” and “White Chocolate” were topical and inspired, not dated and expired. Nonetheless: Vince Carter and Jason Williams accessorize a loaded Magic roster that features Jameer Nelson, college-star J.J. Redick, and Rashard Lewis around its towering centerpiece, Dwight Howard. Friday November 26th, 2010 vs. Dallas Mavericks: The first visit of the year from San Antonio’s intra-state rival to the north that the lower-seeded Spurs upset in the first round of last year’s playoffs, 4-1.

Sunday December 26th, 2010 vs. Washington Wizards: That day after malaise. What could possibly take the edge off? Wholesome NBA basketball, of course. However, exercise caution: Gilbert Arenas will be armed to the teeth. Tuesday December 28th, 2010 vs. Los Angeles Lakers: No other face-offs in the league will boast as many collective championship rings as 2010’s Spurs-Lakers matchups. 32-year-old Kobe Bryant and his cutthroat world-view can still bring it, likely to the tune of an 8th Western Conference Championship this season. Saturday January 1st, 2011 vs. Oklahoma City Thunder: The Kobe Bryant of Longhorns basketball graces the court on New Year’s Day with a modest resolution: light up the Spurs for 90. Sunday January 16th, 2011 vs. Denver Nuggets: This likely represents your last chance to witness Carmelo Anthony in a Nuggets uniform before he becomes a cash-cow flunky for the New York Knicks. Friday March 4th, 2011 vs. Miami Heat: “Miami Thrice” debuts in San Antonio at an unfortunate juncture of the season—the twilight. By this time the mega-star coalition of Lebron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh will probably have lost some of its novelty and luster through overexposure. Nonetheless, this touring circus figures to be the most coveted ticket of the season.

Sunday March 6th, 2011 vs. Los Angeles Lakers: Kobe’s ring count will still eclipse Timmy’s.

Thursday March 31st, 2011 vs. Boston Celtics: Boston’s “big-three” have been supplanted by Father Time and the markedly more youthful and glamorous Miami Heat, though they still have a daunting roster in many respects. Shaq’s drawn-out, 3-years-and-counting farewell tour has him in Celtics garb this year. He’ll be the hulking mass on the bench chowing on Funyuns. Former Longhorns visiting the Spurs: Kevin Durant, F, Oklahoma City Thunder, (4th Year), JAN 1 & FEB 23Royal Ivey, G, Oklahoma City Thunder, (7th year), JAN 1 & FEB 23LaMarcus Aldridge, F, Portland Trail Blazers, (5th year), DEC 12 & MAR 28Daniel Gibson, G, Cleveland Cavaliers, (5th year), NOV 20Maurice Evans, G, Atlanta Hawks, (8th year), DEC 10Dexter Pittman, C, Texas, Miami Heat, (Rookie), MAR 4D.J. TSP With Spurs Breakout Star, George hill: TSP: What are your thoughts on Tony Parker remaining in San Antonio since you’re ability to ball was the whole reason trade talks started up?George: “Nothing I can really say about that. That’s something handled by the front office. They’re gonna do the best they can to win basketball games. Right now that’s all we know—that Tony Parker is still our teammate—and that’s all we’ve been focused on.”

TSP: What is it like playing for a tradition-rich franchise such as the San Antonio Spurs?George: “It’s a great family. They treat every player like family, and that’s all you can ask for. I feel blessed to be here.”

TSP: What is your perspective as an NBA player of the LeBron James/ Dwyane Wade/ Chris Bosh mesh-up in Miami?George: “We’re not into big flashy stuff here in San Antonio. We keep the same jerseys year after year, as you can see. We have our own core group of guys and that’s what we’re focused on.”

All you basketball enthusiasts, it’s time to rejoice. The NBA season is once

again upon us. In an offseason that shook up the basketball world as we know it, we are given a much different outlook, with some of the top players in the world donning different jerseys. With this shake-up, will the Lakers be able to repeat? Are some teams on the outside looking in now? Let’s take a look into my expert predictions for who will be playoff bound:

EastErn ConfErEnCE

1. Miami Heat – If you put any other team to finish 1st in the East then you are just flat-out stupid. Dwyane Wade has finally gotten

the support from his front office to bring in the likes of LeBron James and Chris Bosh. Expect this trio to cause some damage this season.

2. Orlando Magic – With basically the same team intact (added Quentin Richardson, Chris

Duhon; lost Matt Barnes), this team will continuously get better as Dwight Howard keeps progressing. Expect the same from this team this upcoming year.

3. Chicago Bulls – While they swung and missed with the Big 3 (The Heat guys), the Bulls still put

together a strong base. The Bulls brought in Carlos Boozer, Kyle Korver, and Ronnie Brewer to join the likes of Derrick Rose, Joakim Noah, and Luol Deng. While they are still trying to acquire Carmelo Anthony, this is a team that should still be feared in the East.

4. Atlanta Hawks – After retaining Joe Johnson by giving him the largest contract

of the summer, the Hawks come in as the same team. Unfortunately, come playoff time, it may still be the Hawks team.

5. Boston Celtics – Making their team older with the signings of Shaquille and Jermaine O’Neal, expect the Celtics to do as they

always do—tail off at the end of the season, but come on strong in the playoffs.

6. Milwaukee Bucks – Even with the injury to Andrew Bogut, this team still finished 6th last year and took the Hawks to 7 games.

The Bucks also signed Corey Maggette and retained John Salmons to bolster themselves for a bigger run this year behind the astonishing point guard play of Brandon Jennings.

7. New York Knicks – The Knicks are finally back on their way up. After missing out on

the Heat 3 as well, the Knicks brought in Amare Stoudemire, and held out hope to get their own big 3 at some point. Adding other guys like Raymond Felton and Anthony Randolph to a good, young group will give Mike D’Antoni something to build upon.

8. Charlotte Bobcats – Michael Jordan has finally put something together in Charlotte.

Coach Larry Brown is starting to play younger guys which are allowing guys like Tyrus Thomas to blossom. Gerald Wallace and Stephen Jackson will try to give this team another playoff berth this year.

WEstErn ConfErEnCE

1. Los Angeles Lakers – The Lakers return after their championship with even better

depth this year. Adding Steve Blake, Matt Barnes, and Theo Ratliff to an already strong group will provide the Lakers with a good shot at another title run.

2. Dallas Mavericks – It’s a shame to always put the Mavs so high because all they do is disappoint. The Mavs added low

post depth by acquiring Tyson Chandler and also by getting rid of Erick Dampier (It’s about DAMN TIME). With the emergence of Rodrigue Beaubois, this team has the depth to give anyone a run for their money. The question is: Will they actually put the effort in?

3. Oklahoma City Thunder – When you have a 21 year old kid on your team leading

the NBA in scoring at 30.1 PPG, you know you are in for good times. Kevin Durant is taking this team to the next level, and is being helped out by other young pieces in Russell Westbrook, Jeff Green, James Harden, and Serge Ibaka. After taking Los Angeles to 6 games last year, this team is very frightening.

4. Portland Trail Blazers – If Portland could ever get a strong, healthy year out of Greg Oden,

this team would be topping the West in a heartbeat. However, he can’t stay healthy, so the Blazers rely on Brandon Roy and LaMarcus Aldridge for another year.

5. San Antonio Spurs – The Spurs continue to get older and older, yet they continue

becoming the Celtics of the West as well. They finally brought over Tiago Splitter to America to form a good frontcourt duo with Tim Duncan. George Hill keeps getting better, allowing more rest for Tony Parker, and drafting James Anderson will give Ginobili a good amount of rest too. Given their experience and newfound depth, they could be scary come playoff time.

6. Denver Nuggets – This team could be in the same spot they were last year, or if they get rid

of Carmelo, they could be in the basement of the West. The health of their frontcourt is struggling with Kenyon Martin and Chris Andersen overcoming off-season injuries.

7. Utah Jazz – Subtract Carlos Boozer and add in Al Jefferson, and you are given basically the

same team from last year. Jefferson will finally be placed on a good team after sitting up in Minnesota, and expect Paul Millsap to help pick up Boozer’s production. Deron Williams continues to be one of the best point guards in the NBA and will only get better.

8. Phoenix Suns – Steve Nash will have to look for a new partner in crime with Amare

heading over to the East. The Suns did add a number of players in Hedo Turkoglu, Josh Childress, and Hakim Warrick. If Phoenix can get better production from their younger players (Goran Dragic, Jared Dudley, Robin Lopez) to absorb Amare’s production, they could be much higher than 8th.

So, who wins it all? If you said the Heat, then you are correct. However, while most think it will be the Lakers that they face, I’m going to be bold and say they face the Oklahoma City Thunder. Durant and Westbrook were very strong in the WBC games this summer, looking even better than they did last year. The Heat could even suffer an injury to one of their 3 and still be amazing. While I don’t think they will win 70 games, they should do the smart thing and rest their guys at the end of the year to prepare. I personally think this will be one of the best years in the NBA in awhile, so sit back, relax, and enjoy the season.

My Big 12 Dark Horse…

It’s weird saying this since they have been on top so often, but my dark horse

is the Texas Longhorns. Over the past couple of years, Texas has seemed to be falling more and more down the ladder. Once at the top of the Big 12, they’ve recently dropped to 4th behind the two Kansas teams and even Baylor. Can you imagine that? Texas not even being the top team in Texas in one of the big 3 sports? However, with the depth that they have this year, as well as the losses from other teams, they have the ability to take advantage of their situation. The Longhorns have to replace their low post starters in Damion James and Dexter Pittman, but newcomer Tristan Thompson will help alleviate that pain more quickly than most may realize.

My Big 12 Freshman of the Year…

While mostly everyone is looking at Josh Selby at Kansas to win this award easily, my money is on Perry Jones. At 6’11” Perry Jones is an athletic freak and is capable of doing anything. You want him to post up his guy? You got it. Maybe

take his man out and rain 3’s on him? No problem. How about getting a rebound and actually leading the break? Yeah, he can do that too. With LaceDarius Dunn coming back to join him, and likely speedster Stargell Love taking over the point guard helm, this looks to be a scary team once again. Perry might not put up as big of numbers as Selby will, but all the things that Jones will do to help this

team, on both sides of the ball, will help his Baylor Bears a lot more.

Coach with the Biggest Workload This Year…

Jeff Capel and it’s not even close. Not only did they go 4-12 in the Big 12 last year, not only are they dealing with an impending NCAA investigation from Tiny Gallon’s problems, but he also loses 52.1 PPG from the 72.1 that his team

averaged last year. You know you are in a lot of trouble when Cade Davis is your best returning player. He’s 82-51 in his tenure at Oklahoma, but unfortunately, he is going downhill and fast. His recruiting class was nowhere close to the Top 25, and it appears as if this will be another long, and maybe his last, year at Oklahoma.

First Team All Big 12… Guard: Jacob Pullen, Kansas State: The beard is back in Kansas State. He’s a guy that I see as a smaller Gilbert Arenas, minus the idiotic things that Gilbert does. Pullen isn’t afraid to shoot from anywhere on the court, and just knows how to score. This year, he will have to learn how to be a point guard and to be the leader of this team with Denis Clemente graduating.

Guard: LaceDarius Dunn, Baylor: Here’s another guy that just knows how to score. With a very unorthodox shot, Dunn doesn’t care if he has 2-3 guys on him, he’s going to launch it up and more

than likely it’s going in. Expect plenty of the same from him this year.

Forward: Marcus Morris, Kansas: Marcus put up huge numbers last year, and will be relied on to do even more this year. With Cole Aldrich and Sherron Collins gone, Kansas will be looking for someone to step into their

roles and anchor down the low post, as well as being a leader on this team. With a freshman point guard in Josh Selby, someone will have to be that veteran leader on the floor and it just may be Marcus’ time in Lawrence.

Forward: Curtis Kelly, Kansas State: Kelly was a highly touted recruit coming out of high school, ending up at UConn. When playing time became sparse there, he decided to take his talents to Kansas State, where he has been nothing short of impressive. Had a great year last year and will be expected to do even more this year for the ‘Cats.

Forward: Perry Jones, Baylor: I’ve already talked about him in this article, but it was tough choosing him over a guy like Colorado’s Cory Higgins. Outside of Dunn, mentioned above, Baylor will need to find a second primary scorer with

Tweety Carter and Ekpe Udoh gone. If Jones comes in strong, expect big things from him this year.

NBA Mavs fans have been doomed ever since the comeback by the Heat in the

Finals. It’s been a whole lot of playoff embarrassment since then, whether it is getting knocked out by the 8th seed or getting bounced in the first round over and over. With Cuban running this team like it’s a fantasy squad, he is now trying something new. By going with depth, he is hoping that this will be what gets

Dallas that championship. Is this really going to be the answer that leads them there this year? NO, and here’s why:

You’re Likely Starting 2 Point Guards: Can Cuban just admit that getting Kidd was a mistake? I love Rodrigue Beaubois and think he can be something great, but now we have Kidd guarding shooting guards. Newsflash, this means he’s going to have to guard the likes of Kobe, Roy, Ginobili, etc. All Kidd can really do defensively is read passing lanes and somehow get rebounds. Trust me Cuban, you won’t be forgotten for not re-signing Nash and then trading Devin Harris. Real Smooth.

Health Has To Become An Issue: The ‘07-‘08 season was the last time newcomer Tyson Chandler played a full season. The Mavs put out the oldest starting lineup last year. Haywood went through an injury last year as well. With age comes brittleness, and when you play a sport like basketball where you are met with hardwood upon falling, injuries are bound to happen. I have a feeling that this depth will be tested a lot.

This Team Crumbles With Dirk On The Bench: Anytime that Dirk went to the bench last year, you saw a very considerable drop in production. You look at the Lakers and you see guys like Lamar Odom and Pau Gasol step up when Bryant is off the court. The Mavs don’t have that down low, and they have a point guard who can’t drive to save his life. Dallas has needed someone who can create for himself coming off the bench, but their one option like that, Beaubois, is now starting.

We Do, However, Have A Talented Bench: The Mavs will be sporting a talented bench this year with the likes of Jose Juan Barea, Jason Terry, Shawn Marion, Tyson Chandler, and Dominique Jones. When you do have an old team, a bench like this is required. There is a lot of talent on this bench too, thus you hopefully won’t see a huge drop-off when they are in.

This team will be good, don’t get me wrong. It will be another 50+ win season, another high play-off birth, but they still don’t have that championship formula figured out. Not forking enough money over to keep Nash, and then spending that money on Erick Dampier is going to haunt this team until Dirk retires. Once Dirk goes, this team will do the exact same thing.

Another One and Out This Year

What I Dig About the Rockets

www.TexasSportsPro.comAvailable at all Exxon Tigermarket locations in the Greater Austin area14TEXAS

Austin’s Original Sports Magazine

I dig Jordan Hill. I like Chase Budinger. Patrick Patterson, Courtney Lee, Kyle Lowry, Luis Scola, Chuck Hayes, Shane Battier. I’m all about the hustle-guys. There’s just

somethin’ about those blue collar happy hours with real testosterone-driven men talkin’ about the Charlie Hustles of different generations. I like guys that put some skin on the hardwood for loose balls. That’s what this bunch of Rockets is about.

Guys like Battier and Hayes and Scola have been doin’ it in Houston for awhile now; and there’s some wise heads in H-Town who have paid attention and brought in younger-versions of hustle-men. Budinger is a multi-talented kid who is white. Yea, I said it. He’s white; red-headed, in fact. Did you know that in 25 years there will be no more red-heads being born? Yeah, they’re dying as a species. No offense to you carrot-toppers. Some of my best friends have been “strawberry blonde.” Nevertheless, there’s something to be said for Chase—you know, being in the NBA and all. Hill and Patterson, while not red-heads, bring athleticism and more athleticism to the table. Patterson tore it up for KU and looks to bring his own physical, come-get-some style of play to the upper echelon of competition.

I like guys like Lee and Lowry from the guard positions. Lee caught my eye as a member of the Magic squad that began shaking things up in the East a few years back. He’s a solid defender on the perimeter as well as an excellent shooter from the outside. Lowry just has that thing that I like…I dunno, it must be the Napoleon complex or something. Nevertheless, I don’t know how these Rockets will fare in a Conference riddled with not only unbelievable talent and experience but also youth and potential as well.

It’s not JUST about Kobe and Phil anymore. It’s about Durant and Dirk and Duncan, etc. I still like the hustle guys, though…

“You had to love running, or you wouldn’t live to love anything else.”

–Christopher McDougall, Born To Run

LIKE MANY OF YOU….

For me, running long distances once ranked somewhere between a root canal and

getting a flat tire on Mopac. With such a busy schedule, it just never seems to be the right time for me to haul off on a 4 miler around Town Lake, or anywhere else for that matter. (Hats off to those of you who actually do and make it look like so much fun.)

Earlier this month, I found out about the 20th annual Thundercloud Subs Turkey Trot benefitting Caritas, coming up on November 24th, Thanksgiving Day. After careful consideration I decided to register for this event and compete in a distance race for the 1st time in my life. To avoid killing myself, I’d have to consult an avid distance runner and someone who has years of experience advising all types of runners. I called on my friend Melinda Bowen (Mel for short) an avid distance runner (20+ miles/week) and team member at Mellow Johnny’s bike shop, Lance Armstrong’s fitness-driven retail store. As an experienced athlete, and 5 year veteran in the running/triathlon/cycling industry, Mel has chopped it up with thousands of runners looking to talk nutrition/hydration fads, gain cross training knowledge, or get advice on how to correct/avoid running injuries…

Question & Answer Time With Pro, Mel:

Bobby: Mel, I’ve got 40 days to prepare for the 1st distance race of my life – where does a guy like me start?Mel: Ease your body into running long distances. Many runners get injured by trying to tackle too much mileage too quickly.

Bobby: What type of diet should I get into that will help me prepare and get the best results?Mel: You definitely need protein and power foods. Protein and fruit smoothies are great. Also, try adding nuts, oats, and spinach or kale to your smoothie. These are great energy foods. Stay away from processed foods which take lots of energy for the body to break down (i.e. White bread, fried foods, hot dogs, canned meats, frozen meals, etc.) Also, beans, rice, peanut butter, and bagels are all great sources of energy.

Bobby: What type of shoes do I need to buy?Mel: Recent trends are showing that thick soled running shoes can be overly corrective for runners, actually changing the natural mechanics of how you run. The thick soles

disconnect us from feeling the ground and in my case, actually caused chronic knee pain and I.T. Band stress. Thinner soled shoes allow the foot to fall more naturally and give a better feel to the runner’s foot. You should mix in some barefoot running as well, either on the sand or grass.

Bobby: Now I know what type of shoes and diet to start off with, what type of workouts should I do to get into competition shape?Mel: Everyone’s body is different. For you, because of your volleyball background, I suggest starting with 2-A-Days to get ready for the race.

Bobby: Like sand running in the morning and a trail run in the evening?Mel: Yes, that’s perfect. Sand is super low-impact on your body and trail running is great for lateral muscle strengthening. Pavement running can shock the knees and ankles, and only works the fore and aft motion muscles. Make sure you add light to moderate sprints in with your distance work.

Bobby: Mel, thank you for getting me started. Hopefully, I can get to work and not get my butt kicked by any 12 year olds at the Turkey Trot.

GET INVOLVED WITH GIVING

The 20th Annual Turkey Trot is open to athletes of all ages and includes a 5 mile run, a 1 mile walk, and a Kids K for the youngsters. Since 1990, Thundercloud Subs has raised over $1,000,000.00 for Caritas. Caritas is a charitable organization dedicated to fighting hunger, homelessness and poverty here in Austin. There are several ways to give including preparing and serving food at the Caritas community kitchen, volunteering at food drives, or assisting refugees who’ve fled persecution in their home countries as they acclimate to our culture.

We have the ability to help those in need, and help ourselves become a happier, healthier community. Let’s get started together. I’ll keep ya’ll posted each month on how you can build your run, improve your nutrition, and get more physically fit. I thought this was supposed to be the team. I thought of all the years of struggling,

of not winning a Big 12 title in more than a decade, and of suffering through numerous losing seasons, that A&M would make their run for that Big 12 title. However, things have fallen through on both sides, and one of the sides is a shame. This team may even wind up finishing worse than last year with games against Oklahoma, at Baylor (Robert Griffin is back people), Nebraska, and Texas. A 3 game losing streak has knocked the wind out of this team, but exactly what has happened to them?

The Shoulder of Doom

Jerrod Johnson’s career at Texas A&M looks like it will be a dark one, and there’s nothing he can really do about it. His offseason shoulder surgery wasn’t something that was supposed to affect him once he was fully healed, but it’s obviously taking its toll. A guy who threw only 8 interceptions last year is already at 9 in the first 6 games, including two 4-interception performances against FIU and Oklahoma State. Just by looking at his passes, you can tell something isn’t right. It’s a shame that his career at A&M is going to finish like it has so far, and hopefully something comes around for him. Here is a guy who has busted his ass since arriving in College Station, and is now sitting atop of most of the passing records at A&M.

Another Defense, Another Fail

Since 2006, Texas A&M has had THREE different defensive coordinators. What does this mean? Guys who are seniors and juniors on this roster have had to learn 3 different defenses. This is definitely not a good thing, especially when none of these defenses work. A&M’s defense came out strong in their first 3 games, but it’s not too hard to be dominant against Stephen F. Austin, Louisiana Tech, and Florida International. Since then, they have been torched by Oklahoma State, Arkansas, and Missouri. With other high powered offenses on the agenda (Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Baylor), this defense is going to have to figure out an identity, and fast.

Either way, there is still hope that this team can claim a bowl berth, but a LOT is going to have to happen. A win against Kansas would make it 4 wins, but after that it doesn’t look so bright. Sherman may have to start updating his resume because we all know that “Dollar” Bill Byrne doesn’t accept losing like this…

Corey Poche

Fractured isn't a strong enough word to describe a confused and furious Texas Tech

fanbase that appears to be on the verge of civil war. Following two more conference losses, Texas Tech (3-3 overall, 1-3 Big XII) and head coach Tommy Tuberville are being ambushed by frustrated fans who make it hard to believe that that the previous coach ever lost a game. But being only midway through the first season following the coaching change, is the criticism justified? Over ten years, Mike Leach singlehandedly gave Big XII football a facelift. Who would have ever thought that even Nebraska would be forced to try the spread offense in order to stay relevant? Leach's offense made anything seem possible in Lubbock and gave the fans an identity that they clutched onto and wore as a badge of honor. It became popular to proclaim the coach as a mad genius capable of doing more with lesser talent than any coach in America. Any fan who still believes that needs to look deeper into what he actually accomplished… Zero Big XII championships. Zero Big XII Championship Game appearances. Zero BCS bowl appearances. Only two wins in ten years against Texas. Perhaps his most significant achievement was fooling the world to believe that an annual appearance in a meaningless bowl is a high measure of success. He must be laughing his Tommy Bahama shorts off in a

wrinkled, mustard-stained Margaritaville t-shirt in Key West thinking about how he was able to create such a grand legacy after setting the bar so deceivingly low. Nobody seems to remember that even Leach had a losing conference record in his first season guiding the Red Raiders. That team ended up 3-5 against Big XII foes, and lost 40-27 in the GalleryFurniture.Com Bowl against East Carolina. And anyone who argues that Tuberville inherited a team that wasn't broken until he got there shouldn't forget that Tech was 2-2, and then 6-4 last year before winning out to close the season. Tuberville won't have to try and win with lesser talent in future seasons either because he has shown that he won't settle for lesser talent. He has made recruiting a top priority with a class that continues to inch its way up the Rivals.com rankings (#14 currently)…

COLLEGE SPORTS

Rethinking the Leach Legacy in Lubbock

PRESEASON BASKETBALLIN AUSTIN

With the onset of preseason College Basketball, many

of the Texas Hoop fans may be feeling uneasy after the collapse of the 2009-2010 Texas Basketball team. For the first time in program history, the Longhorns reached the top of the rankings ladder early in 2010, but this high lasted merely one week. The seemingly dominant Longhorn squad began showing characteristics of a rookie program with zero leadership, ending their conference play with a 9-7 record and an upset to Wake Forest in the first round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. With this dreadful season behind the Horns, what does the 2010-2011 future look like? Here’s a little preview.

Texas is ranked #3 in Preseason Big 12 play. With the loss of three key playmakers, Avery Bradley, Dexter Pittman, and Damion James, Rick Barnes has to up his game plan and that begins with his new players. Even though Barnes only picked up two players for the 2010-2011season, these newcomers make for a massively dominant pair. Cory Joseph, a point guard with a magnificent sense for the game and a strong determination to win, fills a huge void for the Longhorns; while power forward Tristan Thompson brings a high energy and aggressive style of play to the table, which will fit in well with the Longhorns offensive game plan. And here’s a fun fact, this duo not only brings high energy and skillful plays to the Horns, they also bring chemistry to the 40-acres after playing together for many years in Grassroots Canada and at Findlay Prep. Chemistry is one element that will play a huge role in the success of this Texas team.

Can this duo be the force that will bring the Longhorns to the top and keep them there for longer than one week? I have a feeling that this pair may be the saving grace to Rick Barnes’ poorly coached/chemistry lacking teams of the past; but only time will tell.”

1The November calendar is loaded with

great sports, from MLB, the NFL, to the Turkey Day extravaganza; but if you ask me – when I think November – one thing comes to mind - rivalry games in college football. Sure there are other great sports going on… as outrageous as it is, unless there’s a sweep—Major League Baseball will crown it’s champion in the 11th month of the calendar. Games 5, 6, & 7 of the 106th Fall Classic are slated for the 1st, 3rd, & 4th of November. The season is entirely too long, but for the record – I’ll take the Phillies. November is the NFL’s separation month. It is the month where the early season pretenders are weeded out, and the real Super Bowl contenders emerge. But, as I said earlier, to me, as a college football junky – November represents everything that is great about the boys of fall. No matter where you stand on the BCS, Conference championship games, the ridiculous number of bowl games, or the ridiculous lack of a play-off – the rivalries played this month are what stir our emotions and passion for the game year after year.

Here are my top 5 all-time college football rivalries:

Army vs. NavyThis game may not have the significance that it used to in college football, but it is still one of the most time-honored rivalries in all of sports. The first clash of the Cadets and Midshipmen was way back in 1890 and has been played each year for the last 80 years. Navy has won the last eight in a row and holds the series lead, 54-49-7.

Notre Dame vs. USCThis rivalry has fallen off in recent years, but at one time it was host to two of the most dominant teams in the country. Both have won numerous national titles and have had a number of Heisman trophy winners among its alumni. Five of the ten most watched football games in history were played between these two historic franchises. The Irish have taken it home the most, 42-33-5. Texas vs. Texas A&MTexas, Turkey, and football – is there anything else? This one has been going on for the last 116 years, either on or right after Thanksgiving, and everyone watches and chooses a side. Families are divided; offices

bragging rights are on the line – hell, the Aggie fight song is all about beating Texas. ‘Nuff said. It will take some time for the Aggies to draw even with the Longhorns, however; Texas holds a 75-36-5 advantage. Michigan vs. Ohio StateIf you know my background, you know this one is close to my heart. Simply known as ‘The Game,’ the rivalry between these two football powerhouses began over a century ago in 1897. My relatives (life-long Ohioans) tell tales that the rivalry is just a modern recreation of the Toledo War, a border dispute between the state of Ohio and the Michigan territory, from way back in 1835. Of the 106 times the two teams have met, Michigan holds the series lead 57-43-6. Auburn Vs. AlabamaThis one is from birth. You choose sides out of the womb and do not waver. There are no pro sports in the state, and the Iron Bowl is all that matters. As a matter of fact, this got heated enough in the early days that the series had to be halted; it took another 40 years and some encouragement from the Alabama legislature to get it started again. Alabama currently holds the series lead, 40-33-1.

Around the Hornwith Erin Hogan

Obviously we didn’t expect the Horns to drop that one against UCLA; and perhaps

some of us were under the impression that the annual OU match-up was going to work out for us. Neither of those games went as planned for Texas, but that doesn’t change how our beloved Longhorns should play the rest of the season. Some programs just have it. They always recruit the best players, they hire and lock-up the best coaches, and they win ballgames. Texas is one of those programs. So, as a fan, when you’re sitting in the middle of a season in which you’ve already lost two games, and your archrival has just taken over the #1 ranking in the polls, it’s easy to become disheartened. Here are a few reasons why you should not:

1. Schedule—The Horns have endured the gauntlet portion of their season’s slate already. Oklahoma and Nebraska were the big headliners coming in, and UT split

those decisions. With games like Iowa State, Baylor and Florida Atlantic, the Horns look to continue their rebound. Keep an eye on Oklahoma State and Texas A&M, though. OSU has shown some spunk this season and the Aggies always come to play.

2. Mack—That’s right. Mack Brown is a winner and always has been. Let us not forget that this is in all actuality a rebuilding year for Texas. Colt, Shipley & Co. have not suited up at DKR in awhile now. Let’s let Gilbert finish off his first season as a starter before we push the panic button, shall we?

3. Rushing Attack—Texas outran the run-happy Huskers 209 yards to 125. They ran 46 times and passed 16. The power-package of Johnson, Newton and Whittaker on the ground combined with the decision-making of Gilbert look to have the Horns feeling a little more comfortable for the second stretch of the season.

4. Momentum—It’s best to lose in the sooner rather than later, if it’s going to happen; so, if the Horns can keep on-the-up after the Nebraska victory (and they should…see ‘Schedule’ above), they may see themselves looking at a 10-2 finish. Rebuilding year. Ten-and-two. Rebuilding year, Texas-style.

5..Expectationless—Er, rather the expectations are less than they were at the beginning of the season, when they were hovering somewhere between Planet X and a galaxy far, far away. UT fans do that. We expect Conference and National Title glory every year. And that’s good. But now, after falling out of the AP-Top 25 for the first time in over ten years, the Horns should breathe a little easier and simply play the game. And when you have the talent, coaching they do, that’s usually a good thing.

512-ROCKS TSP- Is AOW a national organization?

Ron- It’s not a national organization but the Seton family of hospitals which it supports is. We have people and businesses all over the U.S. that step up when AOW comes around, but we’ve only been doing this for the 3 years it’s been in place.

TSP- What is the purpose of AOW?

Ron- The purpose of AOW is to raise awareness and money to help support Seton Children’s hospital of Central Texas. Whether you wear a patch on your back or not or even if you just want to support the cause, the entire community can help these kids that so need our help. It is a great opportunity to ride in our beautiful hill country, network and get to know others in the community…and have one heck of a fun party all while helping kids in need! Its win win.

TSP- How often do you all do events?

Ron- The BAR (Blackett Arms Riders MC) attends other’s events and fund-raisers to support their great causes and the BAR itself holds 4 quarterly events of its own. It allows us time to gather lots of great give-a-ways items like those we had at the Twin Peaks event on the 23rd, and so each event is memorable in its own way. BAR members, riders, and friends also hit at least one bike night a week with most listed on our blackettarms.com website events page. We can also be found on facebook.

TSP- How are you involved and how long have you been involved with AOW?

Ron- I first attended an Angels On Wheels event and was blessed by kicking off the day’s events and ride with a 70+ year old sweetheart by the name of Sister Pat on the back of my Harley. I was then asked if I would be interested in becoming co-chair of a Circle Of Friends chapter specifically focused on AOW. This chapter is called the Central Texas Riders. All BAR officers are members. and BAR friends and families work hard to drive this great cause and give a lot of their time, money, and efforts to make it one of the best experiences possible.

TSP- Where does someone go to get involved with AOW?

Ron- Any individual can read about AOW and the BAR by checking out the Blackett Arms website (BAR tab), drop us a note, have a beer with us at a bike night or event, or make a donation to the BAR. You can also register for the AOW ride via our site or go directly to www.angelsonwheelsride.org. Anyone can always email the Blackett Arms Riders MC at [email protected] or call myself Ron “Bone” Blackett at 512-788-1440.

Ron Blackett is also a Liaison with the ROT Rally and is associated with the Austin Community Foundation 501c3 and founder of Brand Austin 501c3 (currently placed on hold due to being so busy).

Blackett Arms, the business, posts products for sale to help drive our causes and sells various items like custom shotgun mounts and security devices for motorcycles, homes, military applications, and more. Currently these are temporarily on hold as our focus has been consumed with the MC and raising money for Angels on Wheels.

Blackett Arms Riders MC supports fallen riders, veterans, and the kids. We sell items as we can afford to have them made or through generous donations, and use that money to build these funds and to do all we can:

Fallen Riders – We set up this fund so having something in hand and

making a donation can be on behalf of everyone in the community.

Veterans – While most Blackett Arms Riders are veterans and some are still serving and currently deployed, we do all we can to support our brave brothers and sisters. We stand alongside any and all veteran and their families and will soon be raising funds to buy and build a Storage Area Network and FTP site that those deployed, BAR members or not, can share information, photos, videos, and whatever else they want with their families that are so far away, back home here in the states. We also attend funeral services and will provide security alongside many other great veteran groups and MCs whenever possible.

Kids – The annual Angels On Wheels event is our main portal for helping out the kiddos but we also go on rides and events that so many other great groups do every year. We are always open to helping a kid out.

General – We accept general donations of cash and items we can raffle or auction. They all go to the bucket of the donator’s choice or split equally into these main 3 before anything else. We do all these things as volunteers.

There are many local athletes in the Austin area. Some stand out more than others; some for their athletic abilities, but others for their

athletic abilities and integrity both on and off the field. Nash Horne is one of those guys who not only has the ability to play the sport, but cares enough to bring honor and integrity to it. Nash Horne was named High School Christian Athlete of the Year by Lay Witnesses for Christ International (LWFCI) and Colt McCoy was the Collegiate Athlete. LWFCI is an organization whose focus is encouraging Christian athletes to leverage their platform to influence the youth of the world.

1. How did you get into playing Lacrosse?

In the third grade, there was a teacher in my school that decided to start a lacrosse program. He was from New York, and had played lacrosse in college. I was instantly hooked! We were the youngest team in town and had to play middle school teams. By the time we were in the 8th grade, we won our district.

2. Where does someone interested in playing Lacrosse find out more about the sport or go to get involved?

They should visit USlacrosse.com. US Lacrosse is the organization that helps further the sport in our country. U. S. Lacrosse can help you understand the game, and if so interested, where to locate the closest league to you. Then go watch a lacrosse game. It is a fascinating spectator sport. 3. Are there any high schools/ colleges in this area that are particularly good for Lacrosse?

Here in the Austin area there are several high schools with long track records of excellence. Among those are Austin High, Westlake, and Westwood. While these teams have been the "powerhouses" in the past, there are up and coming programs challenging these teams' reign over central Texas lacrosse. 4. What was it like being nominated for such a prestigious award within the Christian community and with such a high profile athlete like Tim Tebow?

It was a blessing and a burden. I was incredibly blessed to be the 2010 High School Christian Athlete of the Year, but it also came with a huge responsibility because now I am being watched. Young men are looking to me as a role model, and that is something that can sometimes be overwhelming. That same evening, Colt McCoy was named College Christian Athlete of the Year. Both Tim and Colt present very big shoes to fill; not only athletically, but also from a character standpoint. Our parents stay in touch electronically, so they pretty much cover us in prayer.

5. Did you get to meet Tim?

I have not gotten to meet Tim. However, I do hear from his foundation often. They were my first congratulatory call.

6. You were just asked to speak at an event for the Austin Pregnancy Resource Center...do you do any volunteer work for them?

As of this time, I have taken the tour of the wonderful APRC facility, and am praying about how I can be of help to them.

7. Are you still teaching Lacrosse? I have not decided if I am going to coach and teach this spring due to my busy schedule as a freshman in college. I will pray about it and make a decision later in the year. However, I am always available to my young men anytime they need me. 8. Were you born and raised in Austin?

I was born and raised in Austin.

9. What advice would you give kids coming up in any sport?

I would say, have fun. When I drive past a group of young men playing lacrosse I get excited, because I know the feelings they are having…that feeling of being worry free and full of fun. Every young man thinks that his 4th grade team is just as important as the Dallas Cowboys, and I would tell them to live that out. Treat every team as the best there is, and play like you play for the best team in the world. Don't play for the next play, the next quarter, the next game, or the next season. Play for now. Live now because tomorrow is going to come, but "now" will never be back.

10. What are you studying at UT?

I am in the College of Communications studying Political Communication.

REDStarring: Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, Mary-Louise Parker

The movie RED (stands for Retired, Extremely Dangerous) starts out with Frank Moses (Willis), in a seemingly normal house in a seemingly normal neighborhood. He has an over-the-phone infatuation with a lady (Parker) who works in the pension office for retired government employees. Within minutes there is a home invasion by men dressed in black, wearing masks and wielding many big guns…a frying pan full of bullets (you’ll have to watch the movie) and a kidnapping by Frank of his love interest. Although in this movie the kidnapping of Frank's love interest works out positive in the end, I don’t suggest this courting method.

The rest of the movie is a big game of cat and mouse between Willis, Parker and a couple of RED agents. Malkovich plays a funny, extremely paranoid ex C.I.A agent named Marvin Boggs who lives in the bayous of New Orleans, Louisiana and thinks everyone and everything is out to get him. They are joined by Joe (Freeman) who is terminally ill and living in a nursing home in New Orleans. Together they join efforts to stay one step ahead of and elude the CIA all while discovering a list of people who worked for their former employer who keep dying…and their names just happen to be on it.

RED has gotten some flack and criticism from those not as cool as the TSP folks for the fact that this is the third in a string of movies about “aging” superheroes, ex CIA agents or fill-in-the-blank occupation. The criticism is misplaced as far I am concerned; the bottom line is that Bruce Willis kicks butt. Get over it.

Memorable Lines & Quotes

Joe (Malchovich) sees Frank (Willis) after many years and evidently they did not like each other, at least that is what I would ascertain from this conversation.

Joe- Why are you trying to kill me?Frank- Why would I be trying to kill you?Joe- Because last time I saw you, I tried to kill you and that tends to be something one does not forget...

IN THEATERS NOW:

ARMAGEDDONStarring: Bruce Willis, Ben Affleck, Liv Tyler, Billy Bob Thornton

Okay, so we are going to flex our soft-side muscles here with Armageddon. So, every now and then a movie will come along that I can actually watch more than once…not because of theatrics or acting, but because of such a great combination of storyline and message.

Here’s the skinny. Bruce Willis plays Harry, who works as a foreman on an oil rig. A.J., played by Affleck is a drill operator

who has worked for Harry for a very long time, since he was a kid, and just so happens to also be the love interest of Harry’s daughter Grace, played by Liv Tyler…only Harry does not know it.

Fast forward- Dan Truman (Thornton) is a would be astronaut who is crippled and lost his chance heads the team that includes Harry, A.J. and a motley crew including a characters played by Owen Wilson, Steve Buscemi, Michael Clark Duncan and others. They land on the asteroid, attempt to blow it to smithereens by drilling a hole to a certain depth and dropping a nuclear bomb into it to “nuke” the asteroid. Of course things go awry and one person has to stay behind to detonate the nuclear bomb. They draw straws, A.J. loses and it is his job to stay behind. Harry walks him down the corridor to where he is supposed to leave A.J. to save the world…of course Harry finds a way to force A.J. to give him the job of saving the world and in a touching, dramatic dialogue, A.J. tells Harry how much he loves him and Harry tells him he considers him a son and wants him to look after Grace.

The elements I liked of this movie and why I recommend it is that it has many funny scenes to keep you laughing. It has enough dramatic and action elements to keep you enjoying the storyline and keep you on the edge of your seat at times. But, most importantly, it made me appreciate this life I have and realize that many times in life circumstances change that we have no control over and we should appreciate the time we have.

Austin, TX: City officials today came out with new plans to change many of Austin's one- and two-way streets to three way boulevards. In addition to the surprising announcement, provisions were allowed for the dual medians and for both road sides to be planted with apricots and figs. "Three-way streets are an old idea," said oen planner, "We got it from how ants march."

The outer passages on teh new east west boulevards will head west, the lone inner passage will head east. Special entry ramps for the streets have already been designed and tested in some of the Lake Travis boating docks. A new form of signal light will serve to halt all westbound traffic in evenly spaced intervals, allowing enough room for cars traveling north or south to simultaneously enter the center lane without waiting in a queue.

"Of course, unless they were in a queue to begin with, we consider that to be waiting out of a queue," one official clarified.

The new traffic light governing the new traffic ideas will be a yellowish orange in order to provide consistency with the already understood coloring schemes. The apricot and fig trees will be lighted with full spectrum grow lights mounted at a height that will block a driver's view of commercial signage.

Ever wonder where the term "hot dog" came from? Persistent linguistic folklore says it occurred around 1905, when Hearst newspaper cartoonist Tad Dorgan drew a picture of a dachshund, covered with mustard, wrapped in a long bun. Dorgan was in a hurry and could not spell d-a-c-h-s-h-u-n-d, so he scrawled the words "hot dog" across the cartoon. However, no copy of Dorgan's drawing has ever been found and the practice of selling sausages in buns and calling them hot dogs was around before the 1900's.

During the August 2008 Olympics in China, USA swimmer Jason Lezak broke the world record in the 100-meter Olympic swimming freestyle, completing the distance in 46.06 seconds. Compare that, however, to the fastest fish in the sea, the sailfish. At top speed, 110 kph (68 mph), it can cover 100-meters in 3.27 seconds.

In the late 1880's, German physiologist A.E. Fick was the first person to successfully construct and fit a contact lens. However, the contact lenses were made of heavy

glass, covered up tear glands and did not conform to the actual

shape of the eye, which caused tremendous discomfort. It wasn't until 1929 that Dr. Joseph Dallos, from Hungary, perfected a way to make molds from living eyes. And, in 1936, optometrist William Feinbloom introduced lighter and more convenient plastic lenses, paving the way for modern day contacts.
