Traveling to Texas

• Greedy Americans continued to migrate west to the appealing land of Texas.

• Texas was controlled by Mexico after they won their independence in 1821.

• By 1835 Texas consisted of Mexicans and Texas-Americans, who numbered around 30,000.

Tensions Mount

• Trouble grew between the Mexicans and Texans over the issues of slavery, immigration, and local rights.

Sam Houston’s Leadership

• Took a pledge of temperance after being known as “Big Drunk” by Arkansas Indians.

• Migrated to Texas and became an influential leader in the movement for Texas independence.

• Texas declared independence in 1836.

The Alamo

• Most recognizable battle of The Texas Revolution.

• 400 Americans were put under siege and eventually killed by Santa Anna.

• Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie became legends after their deaths at the Alamo.

Houston’s Strategic Retreat

• Houston continued to retreat from Santa Anna’s charging army.• Houston turned at San Jacinto and surprised the Mexicans.• The Texans wiped out the Mexican army and captured Santa

Anna.

Texan Independence

• The Texans forced Santa Anna to sign two treaties.• The treaties forced the withdrawal of Mexican troops

and recognized the Rio Grande as the extreme southwestern border between Texas and Mexico.

Impacts of the Texas Revolution

• An independent Texas desired annexation with the United States and many of the American people felt that Texas should join as well.

• Slavery held back the annexation of Texas into the union.

• Texas was an independent country until its annexation into the Union in 1845.
