Sabrina My Hang Nguyen, director

Leaving her family behind at eight years of age, Dr. Sabrina My Hang

Nguyen escaped South Vietnam with one of her seven siblings hours before the

Communist takeover of Saigon. After reaching the United States, she was eventually

placed in a Catholic convent, where she spent the remainder of her childhood.

Recognizing her gifts and love of music, the Sisters eventually encouraged her to

begin her studies outside of the community.

Dr. Nguyen received her undergraduate degree in music from the University

of St. homas. She irst began to teach in parochial schools, and later in the public

schools of Houston. During that time, she continued her studies at the University

of Houston, earning a master’s degree and eventually an Ed.D.. Strongly committed

to education and to serving the Asian-American community, Dr. Nguyen left the

classroom to take on administrative responsibilities with the Houston Independent

School District. She now serves as a community liaison in the Strategic Partnerships

Department, with a special focus on Fine Arts and Asian afairs.

In addition to serving as artistic director of HISD’s Elementary Honor Choir,

Dr. Nguyen is currently the director of music at St. Michael’s Catholic Church

in Houston. She has also been principal conductor of the Archdiocesan Choir of

Galveston-Houston and served as a clinician in the United States, Canada, and in

Southeast Asia.

Her continuing musical studies have been at Notre Dame University,

Westminster Choir College, Eastman School of Music, Yale University, he Julliard

School, and the University of Oregon. Principal teachers have included Helmuth

Rilling, James Jordan, William Weinert, Westin Noble, Sabine Horstman and

Charles Hausmann.
