GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Performs a full range of repair/maintenance and inspection related activities for fleet operations and automotive repair shops. Inspects work performed by shop mechanics and contracted vendors. Work requires maintenance and repair of heavy equipment used in the construction of highways/bridges. Work usually requires contact with other governmental agencies and private contractors. Employees at this level perform independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor. POSITION WILL COVER PORTIONS OF THE AREA OF THEEL PASO SHOP - SEE REMARKS FOR WORK LOCATIONS.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience

Graduation from high school or equivalent plus five (5) years experience in automotive, mechanical or equipment repair activities. Technical training in the above areas may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Must have or obtain a State Inspector's license within 90 days of hire. (Experience requirements may be satisfied by full-time experience or the prorated part-time equivalent.)

Competencies

Considerable knowledge of Equipment maintenance and repair procedures HV AC equipment specification and control systems

Working knowledge of Automatic and manual shift transmission repair

Proficient skill in Mechanical repair procedures for diesel and gasoline engines Brake repairs to include anti-locking systems, air brakes and hydraulic brake systems The use of applicable electronic test equipment Diagnosing problems and repairing equipment to include electronic and mechanical components and subsystems according to defined codes and specifications Maintaining a safe working relationship

Ability to Communicate effectively

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Performs preventive maintenance, inspections and skilled repairs on motor vehicles/equipment; as required moves items weighing up to I 00 lbs. related to these activities such as starters, hydraulic cylinders, snow blades hydraulic motors, etc. Orders, picks up and delivers parts, materials, tools, and operates equipment and vehicles to include heavy equipment. Drives to El Paso District locations in El Paso, Hudspeth and Culberson counties to perform maintenance on vehicles at various maintenance offices. Uses computerized diagnostic analyzer systems and performs complex diagnostic work on vehicles/equipment. Analyzes and interprets computerized diagnostic equipment information. Adjusts brakes and replaces brake system parts to include anti-locking systems. Performs quality assurance/analysis on repaired vehicles and equipment. Troubleshoots, tests and repairs electrical systems, electronic ignitions and fuel injection systems. Repairs vehicle air conditioning systems. Performs annual state safety inspections on vehicles to include DOT required inspections. Maintains and repairs heavy equipment used in construction and maintenance of highways/bridges. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Must have or obtain within 90 calendar days from date of employment a Commercial Driver License Class A.

Must pass a drug test prior to employment for commercial driver, safety sensitive and vessel crewmember positions. Commercial drivers, safety sensitive employees and vessel crewmembers will be subject to additional drug and alcohol testing during employment.

Required to work weekends and holidays.

Required to work hours other than 8 to 5.

Required to work under exposure to inclement weather conditions.

Required to wear personal protective equipment provided by employer and comply with all safety requirements.

Driver's record check will be conducted by the Department. Satisfactory driving records are required for driving state or personal vehicles and motor driven equipment to conduct agency business.

Must attend work regularly and observe approved work hours.

External final applicants for any department position who could potentially be required to drive for the department must pass a drug test prior to employment and will be subject to reasonable cause testing during employment.

External final male applicants who are 18-25 years of age will be required to furnish proof of registration or exemption from registration with the Selective Service System.

Successful completion of a post-offer/pre-employment physical exam at the employer's expense is required.

If hired, employee must provide document(s) within three (3) days of hire date that establish identity and employment eligibility. A complete list of acceptable documents is on file with the local Texas Workforce Commission office or http://www.twc.state.tx.us/.

REMARKS

Employee may be contacted during off-duty hours to see if he or she can report to work for emergency conditions.

Successful candidate primarily will be a field mechanic in the following counties, will be allowed to work out of one of the following counties, and required to maintain a work location and agreed upon work schedule: El Paso, Culberson and Hudspeth.
