Executive Summary

Average Class Size Report Spring 2006

□ At the undergraduate level, the overall average class size has decreased slightly from Spring 2005

(40.0) to Spring 2006 (39.4). When taking course delivery mode into consideration, the class size increases by 0.1 student per lecture course, while decreases by 0.2 student for labs.

□ Overall average class size (undergraduate) varies among the TAMU schools and colleges: from the highest average class size of 85.2 students per section for Mays Business School, to the lowest average class size of 29.4 students for College of Engineering.

□ The overall class size at the graduate level has decreased from Spring 2005 (14.2) to Spring 2006 (13.0). There is a 1.1 student per section decrease in the average lecture size and a 1.5 student per section decrease in the average lab size.

□ Overall average class size at the graduate level also varies across TAMU schools and colleges: from the highest average class size of 29.6 students per section for Mays Business School; to the lowest average class size of 6.8 students per section for College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences.

□ Average class size goes down as the course level goes up: 43.8 for undergraduate lower division courses; 34.7 for undergraduate upper division courses; and 13.0 for graduate level courses.

Notes:

□ The report is calculated from a student’s perspective as he/she experiences the class. For example, a cross-listed course, on other reports, may be divided and a portion shown for each department teaching the course. In this report, all cross-listed sections are reported together for one department.

□ This report is the proper source to use for class size studies.
