Texas HistoryT he Republic of Texas had formed in 1836, after breaking away from Mexico

in the Texas Revolution. The following year, an ambassador from Texas approached the United States about the possibility of becoming an American

state. Fearing a war with Mexico, which did not recognize Texas independence, the United States declined the offer. In 1844, James K. Polk was elected the United States president after promising to annex Texas. Before he assumed office, the outgoing president, John Tyler, entered negotiations with Texas. On February 26, 1845, six days before Polk took office, the U.S. Congress approved the annexation. The Texas legislature approved annexation in July 1845 and constructed a state constitution. In October, Texas residents approved the annexation and the new constitution, and Texas was officially inducted into the United States on December 29, 1845. Thus, Texas became the only sovereign nation to become a state of the United States.

How Texas Became a State

T E X A S F A C T S

T exas is the second largest state in the United States in area, with 262,017 square miles. It is as large as all of New England plus New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Illinois combined. It is 801 miles long

from north to south and 773 from east to west. El paso, Texas, on the western border of the state is as close to Los Angeles, California, as it is to Port Arthur, Texas, on the eastern border!

V oted the “Third-Best Place to Shop in the World” by ABC’s The View, Prime Outlets in San Marcos is the largest outlet shopping destination in Texas and the third-largest in the world. The San Marcos Outlet Malls are two discrete outlet malls, the Prime Outlets and Tanger Factory Outlet Center, and are located on Interstate Highway 35 in San Marcos,

Texas. Combined, the two adjacent malls have more than 350 stores, and an excess of 1,000,000 sq ft. During peak seasons, shoppers at the malls can reach numbers that effectively triple the population of San Marcos, TX.San Marcos boasts a number of attractions. At the heart of the city is the crystal clear San Marcos River, a longtime favorite for tubing and relaxation. San Marcos is also home to Aquarena Center, famous for its glass bottom boats and unique plant and animal species that live in the crystal clear San Marcos River. Additionally, visitors can take a short drive to Wonder World to explore an earthquake-formed cave! While San Marcos is the most popular outlet mall, there are many more including Katy Mills and Conroe Outlet Malls located near Houston. Located west of Houston, Katy Mills is a one story facility that sits on 1.3 square miles of land. The mall is built with a “racetrack” design and one complete pass around the mall is approximately one mile, and hosts a variety of over 200 specialty stores—such as Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World, American Eagle Outfitters, Bath and Body Works Outlet, and Neiman Marcus Last Call Clearance Center.

Medical CenterThe Texas Medical Center is the largest medical center in the world with one of the

highest densities of clinical facilities for patient care, basic science, and translational research. Located in the Southeast Houston district of Houston, the center contains 49

medicine-related institutions, including 13 hospitals and two specialty institutions, two medical schools, four nursing schools, and schools of dentistry, public health, pharmacy, and other health-related practices. All 49 institutions are not-for-profit. The entire area is bigger than Downtown Dallas, however some member institutions, such as the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, are located outside of the city of Houston. The center is where one of the first and largest air ambulance services was created and where a successful inter-institutional transplant program was developed. According to the Texas Medical Center, more heart surgeries are performed here than anywhere else in the world. The Texas Medical Center receives over five million annual patient visits, including over ten thousand international patients. Antiques & Collectibles RoundTopLocated between Houston and Austin, Round Top is the place for antique buying in Texas. Every year, in early April and October, the town of Round Top hosts the Original Round Top Antiques Fair, the areas oldest show and one of the nation’s most successful. If you haven’t gotten your fill from the Round Top – local towns such as Bellville, Brenham, Columbus, Fayette-ville, Flatonia, La Grange and many others also hold special antiques and craft events during this time. The Original Round Top Antiques Fair features approximately 400 American and European dealers that showcase everything from formal Continental furniture to country primitives. Also on hand at the show –good ole Texan barbecue, mixed with Oktoberfest fair, in honor of the town’s German heritage.

HillCountryJust west of Austin and San Antonio lies Texas Hill Country, a landscape made up of charming towns and great antique finds. Settled in the mid-19th century, mostly by German immigrants, approximately 37 ethnic groups established Texas neighborhoods, farms and ranches, wineries and plenty of antique shops. You’ll find most of these shops in New Braunfels, Boerne, Fredericksburg, Kerrville and Comfort. All of them fea-ture a wide range of items, from country antiques and painted furniture, to high-style pieces to shabby chic objects, farm tools and ranch furnishings. Texas Hill County sets a rich historic backdrop for antiquing.

EastTexasFort Worth and Dallas are both spectacular cities to shop for antiques – especially if you’re into the high-quality, high-priced tagged variety. Head east from Dallas and you’ll find even more antiques in towns such as Tyle, Longview and even as far as Jefferson. East Texas’ biggest antiques show is Canton’s First Monday Trade Days. Attracting more than 4,000 vendors, this event features all kinds of interesting items, from vintage to 20th century to ranch finds to shabby chic. Other activities in the area include historic sites, such as Sawmills, early oil derricks – and several sites related to the Civil War and to the area’s large 19th century African American population. Other attractions worth a visit: the Goodman Museum, and the steamboat rides on Lake Caddo in the town of Jefferson.

Galveston

Travel south on Interstate 45 through League City, Dickinson, La Marque, and Texas City to historic Galveston. Cross the Causeway, a 2.5 mile bridge that connects the mainland to the island. Galveston is an island that is 32 miles long and 1 to 2 miles wide, with a popu-lation of about 65,000 people.

The first stop will be Ashton Villa. This showplace has been restored to its 1859 Italianate opulence and boasts carved moldings, elaborate mantel-work, and lavish furnishings. Built by James Moreau Brown, it has withstood major disasters such as the Civil War, when it was a hospital for the Confederate soldiers and headquarters for both the Union and Confederate Generals; the Storm of 1900; and Hurricane Ike.

Next drive by The Silk Stocking District and hear about the Moody Family, Sealy Family, and Rosenberg Family. Continue on to The Strand, considered the “Wall Street” of the south-west. The stop at The Strand will include time for lunch and shopping. Be sure to visit The Candy Factory for ice cream. The first ice cream in Texas was not Blue Bell. It was Puritan Ice Cream, and it is still served on Galveston Island!

After departing The Strand, head to the tall ship Elissa, built in 1877 in Scotland. This square-rigged, 400-ton barkentine was a visitor to Galveston during her sailing/working days and has returned as a museum of 19th–century maritime technology, but still sails from Galveston.

When the tour leaves the Elissa, it will drive past Jean Lafitte’s old camp. This pirate lived on the island form 1817 – 1821 and had over 1,000 people in his camp. Now it is time to drive through the University of Texas Medical Center, which covers 85 acres and houses 7 hospitals, including The Shriners Burn Hospital and The Texas Prison Hospital. Now it is time to drive along the Seawall, which is over 10 miles long and 17 feet high. This drive takes the tour by the site of Fort Crockett, built in 1897 and closed in 1947. The buildings left today are used by Galveston College and Texas A&M University Galveston.

Houston, the largest city in Texas and fourth largest in the nation, has experienced phenomenal growth since a small river-boat landing was established on Buffalo Bayou by two transplanted New Yorkers, John and Augustus Allen in August 1836. The city was named after Sam Houston, the general of the Texas army that won independence from Mexico and president of the Republic of Texas. Today, Space City USA is an industrial and financial hub for much of the state.

Begin your tour, with a drive through downtown to Allen’s Landing to see the sight of the riverboat landing established by the Allen brothers and visit some of the 19th-century restored buildings. Next, drive to the Chase Bank Tower for a visit to the Observation Floor. This is the tallest building in downtown Houston and from here you can see the immense size of Houston. There will also be a stop at the Old Rice Hotel where the first capitol building was located when Texas was a re-public. After lunch, tour Christ Church Cathedral, founded in 1839. This magnificent structure contains hand-carved wood-work and fine stained-glass windows, including one designed by Tiffany, and is the only church in Houston that is still on its original site. Next stop City Hall, built in 1839. Then drive through The Theater District, Sam Houston Park, and River Oaks. River Oaks is a residential area founded in 1923 and known as “The Beverly Hills of Houston.” Travel past Uptown Houston, The Galleria, and the Williams Tower. The Williams Tower is the tallest building in the nation outside of a downtown area. It stands 64 stories tall and boasts a 64 foot water wall. Finally, travel past Rice University, the Harvard of the South; the Museum District; the Texas Medical Center, the largest medical complex in the world; and the Astrodome, the eighth wonder of the world.

Also, visit the San Jacinto Monument which is taller than the Washington Monument, and the USS Texas, the only battleship left that served in both World War I and World War II. Begun in 1963, NASA, located just 25 miles south of Downtown Houston, was originally named Johnson Space Center after President Lyndon B. Johnson. It became Space Center Houston in 1992. It covers 1600 acres and employs about 14,000 people. At Space Center Houston, visitors see actual spacecraft like Mer-cury, Gemini, and Apollo capsules, and watch astronauts train for upcoming space shuttle missions. They can also try on space helmets, touch a moon rock, or land the shuttle and try a space walk on state-of-the-art simulators. Live satellite links to NASA facilities provide up-to-date information about current space flights and astronaut training activities. Kids of all ages can jump on the moon, man the space station, command the space shuttle, or build and launch a rocket.

On the way to NASA travel past Ellington Field, known as Ellington Air Force Base during World War II. Then pass through the Friendswood Oil Field, one of the old-est oil fields in the area and the only one in the world with a major freeway run-ning through the middle. Next travel through Webster, where the first rice crop was grown in the 1920’s. Today one-fourth of the nation’s rice crop is grown in or around Houston.

Upon arrival at Space Center Houston, visitors will be able to take two tram rides: one to Mission Control and the other to the training facilities. Afterwards, tour the main building, Space Center Theater, Starship Gallery, Space Center Plaza, The Feel of Space, two gift shops and the Zero Ground Diner for lunch.

Religious Travel

ChurchesinTexaswithDecorativeInteriorPaintingFifteen churches in the Lone Star State are entitled “Churches in Texas with DecorativeInterior Painting.” by the National Register. This group represents a variety ofreligious buildings throughout the state, related by their painted interior ornamentation.Their significance is architectural, historic, and artistic. Most of these churches arefrom German and Czech towns in central Texas, and reflect their CentralEuropean background.

The churches with decorative painting in their interiors are examples of a rareart form in Texas. Their use of freehand work, stenciling, infill, graining, and marblingare historically and artistically important. Many of these churches are located insouth central Texas in small agricultural communities, where evidence of local Czechand German heritage is reflected in town names such as St. Mary’s, Moravia, Wesley, andPraha. The North Texas town of Lindsay and the Panhandle town of Umbarger, which bothcontain decorated churches, share a German heritage with the south central part of thestate. A few churches of the more dominant Protestant denominations are also includedin the nomination, and their use of painted decoration is rare.
