Texan Live’s 3rd Annual Summer Football Camp featuring Aaron Glenn is complete and what a great event it was! We would like to extend a huge thanks to our sponsors: Texan Drive, Memorial Hermann Northeast, Serna Insurance, NuTech Energy, Insperity, Service King, Alspaugh’s Ace Hardware, This is Kingwood, Mojo’s Sports Grille, Chick-Fil-A, Panera Bread, and Kroger for making this event possible.

It is an honor to be able to put on a free camp that is instructed by professionals. Furthermore, it was special to us to have current Humble ISD football players volunteer their time to work with the youth under the direction of the Coaches. Thank you Solomon Garrett, DeMareus Little, Andrew McBride, Michael Scafuri of Summer Creek High School, Diego Gutier-rez and Tai Paehler of Kingwood High School, Randy Joseph of Humble High School, and Niyl Campbell, Justen Camp-bell, Andre Mickles, Joshua Holmes, Devin Hafford, Nathan Vaughn, Daveon Boyd, Tyvonne Thompson, Joshua Escobe-do, Patrick Taylor, Coye Fairman, Johnathan Brantley, Jackson Reed, Rudy Lopez, De’Marius Brooks, Kamron Metts, Tralan Hutchinson, Dawud Shorts, and Kendrix Buford of Atascocita High School, for volunteering your time to work with the youth. We hope each of you benefitted from our camp.

We briefly got a chance to speak with three young men volunteering: Tai Paehler, Diego Gutierrez, and Randy Joseph about their camp experience. None of the three ever attended a camp like this growing up, and as Paehler put it, he be-lieves “it is a good program for the kids, they learn how to do things the right way.” Gutierrez added that “it teaches them leadership, teamwork, how to work through certain conditions, and how to have fun.” While assisting the Coaches in instruction, these Humble ISD volunteers also received personal feedback on how they could improve their game. Two of the interviewed were told they needed to work on their technique and footwork, and sure enough, the following morning before camp, they were working on improvements.

The youth were not the only ones that learned something in camp-everyone did. Whether it was the high school volunteers, staff, or parents, we all have some room to grow. Our most pleasant surprise out of the entire camp, how well behaved and mannered our volunteers were among one another despite the rivalries within the school district. Thank you Humble ISD football volunteers and Coaches for allowing your players to attend our camp. We look forward to your 2014 season!

Thank You Humble ISD Volunteers

Firefighter Arnold is a full time commissioned Engine Operator with the New Caney Fire Department. He is also an EMT-Intermediate with the Texas Department of Health.

Firefighter Arnold began his service with the New Caney FD as a vol-unteer firefighter in August 2003. During this time he served as a Lt. amongst many of his volunteer responsibilities. In 2005, Firefighter Arnold attended a local fire academy to complete his certification with the Texas Commission on Fire Protection. This certificiation allowed Firefighter Arnold to begin his service with the fire district as a full time career firefighter.

His length of service and continued support of the department has made him a true asset to the organization.

Lieutenant Tanya Stanford and Investigator Loraine Robinson were chosen for their work in recently obtaining the department’s Contract Training Provider status through the Texas Commission of Law Enforcement. Humble ISD Police Department utilizes in special training and police tactics that focus on the areas of school related law enforce-ment. This new status will enable the Department to offer all state-required training necessary to be in compliance and higher levels of training, not only within Humble ISD but offer to officers in the surrounding areas. Several local school district Police Departments, and even some from East and Southeast Texas, have come for training or ex-pressed interest in training that the department offers. To date, the Humble ISD Police Department has provided train-ing for school district security officers, telecommunicators, and police officers. Future sessions include specialized trainings in student safety, such as Cyber Bullying, Missing or Run Away Children, and Juvenille Behavior. Currently, there are 2,650 Law Enforcement agencies in the state of Texas, there are 188 Law Enforcement Contract Training Providers and only six of those are Independent School District police departments. Investigator Loraine Robinson represents the department as Training Coordinator and Lieutenant Tanya Stanford as a member of our Training Advi-sory Board. They are truly beacons of light for those that follow them in this specialized field of School District Law Enforcement and the education of all Law Enforcement Officers.

The Firefighters of the Year for the City of Humble Fire De-partment are Firefighter/Paramedic Brian Luscomb and Brian May. These firefighters have done an outstanding job creating a Rap-id Intervention Pack for their department. This equipment is used to assist in the rescue of firefighters who are trapped inside a structure that is on fire and/or in a state of collapse. Addition-ally, they have trained Humble Fire Department personnel in the proper use of this equipment, thus enabling the safe rescue of trapped firefighters. Firefighters May and Luscomb provide retraining to all personnel on an annual basis and continually seek ways to improve both this equipment and the use of it.

Detective Squier was chosen for his fortitude, dedication and perserverance in the investigation of the armored car robbery which occurred on October 7, 2013. During this robbery, three males waited for the security officer to exit the armored vehicle while carrying trays of money to restock an ATM device. As one suspect exited the vehicle he began to fire his handgun, striking the security officer multiple times. After a brief gun battle between the suspects and guards, the suspects got back into their vehicle and fled the scence.

At the time evidence was limited, until the suspect vehicle was recovered in a nearby parking lot disabled from gun fire. When checked, the vehicle had been reported stolen the same day. After completing his on scene investigation, Detective Squier made con-tact with the person who had reported the vehicle stolen. That per-son was later found to be the aunt of the owner of the vehicle. An interview occurred with the aunt and vehicle owner, who ultimately confessed that he falsified the stolen vehicle report and that he helped plan and was present at the robbery. Detective Squier was able to obtain the identities of the other suspects involved and was able to file charges on all three suspects involved in a larger rob-bery ring in the Harris County area. This information was passed to investigators with the FBI who are currently working to bring the entire group to justice.

Of the multiple robberies of this type that had occurred in the previous months, as of October 12, 2013, Detective Squier was the only one to file a charge on anyone involved in the robberies. Detective Squier went “above and beyond” by working long hours within a four day span, sacrificing time with familyto bring the suspects to justice and continually checking on the guard who was critically injured.

AHS Goes To State

Atascocita’s Remarkable Season

Atascocita baseball has had a remarkable season this year winning numerous titles and making it to the state tournament. Not one per -son on this team solely contributes to the successes this year, but it is a combined effort from all the players, coaches, and their families. Earlier in the season, Texan Live spoke with four seniors (Hunter Ste -phenson, Travis Jones, Michael Ilardi, and Ethan Klosterboer) about their hopes for the season, and the one comment stuck out the most is when Klosterboer said he wanted to make it to June.

As a follow up, Texan Live revisited the Eagles and spoke to Travis Jones again, along with juniors: Josh Martinez and Anthony Pagano. These three young men bring something very unique to the team. Jones is a University of Texas commit that could potentially be a draft pick straight out of high school. His dream has always been to play professional baseball, and nothing would make him happier than being drafted in an earlier round to the Houston Astros. Jones says he “knows he will have to work his way up through the ranks” but that’s to be expected in such a competitive sport. If he doesn’t go this year, he will proudly represent the Texas Longhorns and experience collegiate ball. One thing is for certain, whether it is this year or three years from now, Travis Jones’ name will be announced during the Major League Baseball draft.

Martinez and Pagano are both juniors that made huge plays in the series against Plano. Martinez, being modest, only said that “he was a lot better at the plate than usual” and Pagano had a first. For the first time ever in his high school career, Pagano hit a home run, and this wasn’t a single home run, it was a three run home run to put the Eagles ahead 10-2! In the 7th inning, Plano was making a comeback, scoring 6 runs, and if it had not had been for Pagano’s homerun, there could have been a major upset. **Note: Travis Jones got drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 39th round as the 1176th pick.

Atascocita baseball made history this season. After being named co-district champions with Klein Collins, the boys advanced further than ever before in the post season. The guys won numerous titles which include: District 13-5A Co-Champions, Region II Bi-district Champions, Region II Area Round Champions, Region II Quarterfi-nal Champions, Region II Semifinal Champions, Region II Champi-ons, and State Finalists.

At the state tournament, the Eagles played San Antonio Reagan, and while it looked like the Eagles had it in the bag, S.A. Reagan scored 5 runs within the last three innings, putting them ahead 5-4. The game was a very hard-fought game and the Eagles did not give up.

Texan Live and the community are very proud of what the boys have accomplished this year. After speaking to team members multiple times, it was clear that the “chemistry” among them really defined them on the field. There is no “I” in this TEAM. The Eagles got this far by working together with each other, their coaches, families, and community. Very proud of you AHS baseball, it was an honor to watch your season unfold.

Atascocita High School prepares for the Adidas Texas 7 on 7 invitational tournament on July 11, 2014. Their dedication takes them on a journey that no other team in the school’s history has done: they will compete in the 2014 7 on 7 State Tournament presented by Adidas in College Station. The tournament has a great history dating back to 1998. In 2007 they established two divisions and the Eagles will compete in the first division. We discussed the game of 7 on 7 and the Eagle’s journey with, head coach, Craig Stump.

Here’s how it works:

Only 64 teams in the entire state have qualified for the tournament with 32 tournaments held statewide. Only the top two teams from each tournament qualify for College Station. (Atascocita qualified in the Lufkin tournament.) In each tournament there is a pool of 4 teams and the winner of each pool plays a semi-final game. The winning team will qualify due to having to be one of the top 2 to qualify. (Atascocita defeated Port Neches Grove in their semi-final game to advance.)

The field is a bit different than the typical football field, with the dimensions consisting of a 45-yard field and they’re lined off every 15 yards. In order to convert a first down, the offense will have 3 downs (rather than 4) to complete a first down. Once the offense gets inside the 15-yard-line, however, they will have the regular 4 downs to complete a touchdown. No kicking is involved which offsets the field goal option. Needless to say, there are a lot of high scoring games in 7 on 7. The scoring is the same for touchdowns (6 points) but with no kick-ing involved the players perform a sort of “two-point conversion” where they start from the 3-yard line. Although it’s only worth 1 point, they are allowed to push the ball back to the 10-yard-line to convert for 2 points. There are two twenty-minute halves in the game.

The quarterback is allowed four seconds to throw the ball, which Coach Stump admitted, “is a long time…” especially since there is no pass rush allowed. No flags are involved. It’s like your typical playground rules. If a player is touched in any fashion or falls to the ground, he is considered down. Though physical instincts happen, as it is still football, the players may be penalized for being “too physical.” Coach Stump’s viewpoint on this is that he sees major inconsistencies in referee’s decisions on the matter: “It makes it hard. You hope it doesn’t affect you too much,” Coach Stump stated.

Although Coach Stump cannot participate in the games due to UIL sanctioned rules, he still enjoys the concept 7 on 7 because he believes it gives the kids something to look forward to. Anything can happen in this tournament… the Eagles have no real expectations, however, the boys remain confident and the excitement alone is propelling them to believe they can do something great in College Station. The Eagles will compete in Pool H playing a total of 3 games against Austin Bowie, Cinco Ranch, and Horn (Mesquite) on Friday, July 11. The top two teams in the bracket will advance to play on Saturday, July 12, in which they will play single a elimination until a champion is crowned. (This format is similar to this summer’s FIFA World Cup). Although 20 players can be on the roster, Coach Stump knows that it’s going to be hot and fatigue will set in after a few games: “It’s hot and the clock doesn’t stop,” so by the looks of it, they will need every single player on that roster.

The Humble Wildcats coaching staff is expecting big things this season from safety Kyle Floyd, quarterback Kahlil Berotte, and sophomore prospect Terio Brown, who is capable of playing running back or wide receiver. Also they expect certain players to step up and be the leaders they know they can be such as Johnny Bolden, Robert Brous-sard, and Josh Wells. “Our defense is going to be awesome. We’re excited about our defense” Coach West stated of these players. Linebacker Bolden has been playing since he was only 5-years-old watching his big brother play the same position. Although he’s proud about his accomplishment in football, he still admits: “I wish I could do more.” Fellow Linebacker, Langston Tunson, who led the team in tackles this past season, said that his parents “made me play football” but admits that he liked it and continued a successful career in the sport. Both players are shooting for defensive MVP in district but their main focus is to get their team to state, a goal neither player believes is unrealis-tic.

The Wildcats began the summer with strength and conditioning workouts in which they are allowed to work out the players two hours a day by UIL standards, whether it be by the coaches or an outside source, a coach’s preference. As for Coach West, he prefers that he and his coaches be around the kids.. These kids want to be a part of “some-thing great” as Coach West puts it. Regular practice doesn’t begin until August 4th.

Coach West implies a certain philosophy on his team. Although winning is always on the top of any coach’s list, he wants these boys to succeed off the field as well. When asked about his player’s communication skills to the coach about not being at practice or running late, he stated that his office phone is always there: “there is no reason for you not to communicate.” He believes that if his players didn’t communicate, then they didn’t want to be there at all. He and the Athletic Directors, Troy Kite and Kristi Malmstrom, have an understanding that these kids are going to be held accountable for their actions whether they’re late or having academic issues. Coach West does admit, howev-er, that he would like to see them struggle a bit while they’re attending Humble High School, so that they are more prepared for when they do enter the real world. The last place he wants to see is the kids end up in prison, on the streets, or simply somewhere they shouldn’t belong. He wants them to be successful upon leaving high school and at every level in life.

Despite a new UIL realignment, in which Humble will be com- peting in 5A (they competed in 4A in pre- vious years) it will not change much how they play ball. Humble will be competing with the teams they have been playing against the past few seasons including Kingwood Park, New Caney, Porter, C.E. King, Barbers Hill, and Dayton. Humble will have one new team joining them in district this season, a team that Coach West knows oh-so-well: Galena Park. Back in 90’s Coach West coached for Galena Park. He began his tenure there as the wide receivers coach before eventually becoming the offensive coordinator. West admits, “Some emotions will be there” when the two meet up this up-coming season: “I had an opportunity to work with some great people there. In coaching, you work at a couple of schools and you find out what your goals are and who you are as a man.”

When asked about his influences to become a coach, West said that he had a lot of great role models and to name just one person would be “an injustice.” He was blessed to have a lot of good people in his life to show him how to do things the right way, something that he intends to pass on to his players. “Growing up I didn’t have a lot. I had my mom, I had love, and I had discipline.” The coaches he had in his life didn’t allow him to go down the wrong paths and is a big reason why he has the vision and the drive for his kids. Although he doesn’t point out one coach, he does point out his mother and his faith that made him the man he is today. He goes on to joke about how his mother gets on him even about coaching: “she thinks she knows about football…” West stated with a smile.

Kingwood’s Championship TeamFor the first time ever in the school’s history, Kingwood boy’s track and field team won state! The first athlete to put Kingwood on the board was Addison Tomlison, who placed 6th in pole vault and earned one point for the Mus-tangs. Shortly after, when the running events started, Myles Marshall placed 1st in the 800m for ten points and DeWitt Thomas placed 2nd in the 300m hurdles for eight points. Adding up these points, Kingwood had nineteen, which was not near enough to win the state meet. Up until the very last event Kingwood was in 7th place overall, but when the 1600m relay team consisting of Garrett Williamson, Myles Marshall, Dawson Trudell, and DeWitt Thomas came up, their luck changed. From when Williamson came out of the starting blocks to the next 3 minutes and 13.25 seconds, they made history! Kingwood’s 1600m relay team placed 1st in the event, earning twenty points for the team and bumping them up from 7th to 1st overall by a single point in front of Klein Oak.

The 1600m relay team not only finished the meet (and sea-son) the best they possibly could, but these boys established a bond this season that Thomas could only describe as a “bond of brothers”. When speaking to all the relay members, their most memorable experience they would take from the season, besides winning state, was the friendships that were created this year among them. There was no selfishness in this team, during practice and meets the boys did what was best for the team. They all looked at the big picture, espe-cially Zach Alam. A junior that ran the relay for most of the season but accepted an alternate position around the time of district because freshman, Dawson Trudell, ran a faster split. Without this trade off, who knows what could have been for the boy’s track and field team. Maybe they would have won state…maybe they would not have, but because of team sacrifice we all know the outcome of the 2014 boy’s track and field season for KHS.

Out of the six young men interviewed, not one of them expected to win state at the beginning of the season. They all knew it was feasible, however, it did not set in until the night before the state meet when they were crunching numbers. Tomlison stated, “I knew Kingwood had a great chance winning but I knew that I had to score at least one point to contribute to the team’s overall.” Great thinking, Tomlison! If not for your one point in pole vault, there would have been a tie for first place! Stephen F. Austin University will be lucky to have you in their program next year.

Four of these young men will return next year and hope to go for a repeat. (Kingwood will only lose one senior from the 1600m relay team.) Although they will be in a new dis-trict next year, the first ever 6A classification, they will defi-nitely have a chance. These boys want to relive the amazing and surreal accomplishment that only lives in most team’s dreams. Congratulations boys, you are the 2014 5A State Champions and the first team to bring it home to Kingwood High School!

Kingwood Park Head Football Coach, Jim Holley, is back in the office preparing for his 24th year of coaching and provided Texan Live some ‘scoop’ on the Panthers upcoming season.

Right now the boys are working on agility, speed, and quickness while also spending time in the weight room at their annual “Speed Camp.” The coaches are allowed, by UIL regulations, to work with the boys 2 hours a day during the week and Coach Holley says the turnout has been pretty good. Especially when you consider that eight years ago, when the school opened, they had 13 kids, “the dirty dozen” as the coaches called it, at the camp and now it has bal-looned to over 300 kids. Definitely a vast improvement over the years! “It’s a testament to the kids and their dedica-tion to getting better, faster, and stronger,” Coach Holley stated. “It’s going to be how we come together and gel in the preseason that’s going to be the big difference.”

With five starters coming back on offense and three from defense, it gives the Panthers leadership returning to the football field. Though they lost a lot of seniors this past season, over thirty players graduated, Coach Holley still believes it is not unrealistic to consider them state title contenders. “No, I think that should be your goal. I wouldn’t want to go in with a team that says we just want to go .500. We’re here to get to the state championship. We want to be at Cowboy’s Stadium. That’s every team’s goal in the state of Texas.”

Coach Holley and his staff will now have to deal with a new team in district: Galena Park. When asked about his knowledge of the football program he stated: “It’s a good solid program. They’ve got a lot of talent over there and definitely someone to be reckoned with.” Even with the new addition of Galena Park he believes the district is up for grabs. It’s going to come down to which team wants it the most. “It’s a matter of who can win those football games and get to the next level.”

Kingwood Park fell in the first round of the playoffs last year to Nederland, 28-7. It was a tough loss for the staff and the players. “I hope they remember it and the feeling they had when they walked off of that field…and use it as a tool of motivation to move further this year.” It’s just one of the many goals they have as a team to go farther than they did last season. “Only one team is going to be happy at the end of the season and that’s the state champions.” Personally, for Coach Holley, it’s even tougher because he loses some of the kids he just spent the last four years with. The work, the time, and the emotions the team experience together creates a family, and these players take it hard when they know it’s over. “It hits them like a brick wall.” Although their time is only four seasons spent together, Coach Holley hopes that the experience they had in high school will make them better in the next phase of their lives. “We hope they become better men, better citizens, better husbands, and better fathers one day. You want them to be successful when they leave here.”

Lady Bulldog’s Summer Camps

creo
Page 23: Texan Live

Youth girl’s summer camps are in full session at Humble ISD, specifically Sum-mer Creek High School. Currently going on right now is a speed and strength training camp for all incoming 7th-12th graders and a basketball camp for 1st-9th graders. Both camps have seen a significant increase in attendance from previous years and Coach McDonald could not be happier about it.

Coach Angie McDonald is the girl’s athletic coordinator and varsity basketball coach at Summer Creek High School. This is now her 5th year with the program and could not be more proud of what the girls have accomplished. This year has had the best turn out this year with 25 little dribblers (1st - 5th grade) and 42 6th-9th graders. When asked about the girl’s performance, Coach McDonald stated, “the younger kids are just learning the game so it’s fun to see them so young not knowing anything. They’re just like a sponge! As they get older, it’s nice to watch their progression.”

The basketball camp will continue the 10th of July and the speed and strength camp will go until July 24th. All incoming 7th-12th grade girls are able to attend the speed and strength camp, which will help them refine their skills and be ready for the upcoming 2014 season. One thing Coach McDonald would like to girls to take from these camps is: “the life lesson that you’re not always going to win. It’s how you respond to failures…” Sportsmanship is just as important in sports as ath-leticism, and in these camps the girls are learning they go hand-in-hand.

Texan Drive’s 1st Annual 5K benefitting Banded Brigade Outdoors was a success! There were over 200 runners in attendance with even more in the crowd cheering them on as they crossed the finish line. The race started approximately at 8 am and the first runner crossed the finish line 17.4 minutes later. After that, they all started trickling in, and by 9 am everyone had finished the 5K. Runners ranged from toddlers to senior citizens and all seemed to have enjoyed it. Awards were given out to the top three fastest times in each age group, with the top male and female receiving a 2014 Houston Dynamo jersey signed by the entire team!

Brad Davis and Tally Hall of the Houston Dynamo were on site, as this 5K benefitted their organization: Banded Brigade Outdoors (BBO). Banded Brigade Outdoors is a 501-c3 nonprofit organization that caters to active duty military, Veterans, and their families. BBO invites mili-tary members and their families out on sponsored hunting and fishing events at no cost to these members. All accommodations are taken care of by BBO. All proceeds from this 5K are being donated to BBO.

Thank you Texan Drive for hosting the event, and also to the other sponsors: Memorial Hermann Northeast, USO, Kroger, Walgreens, Smoothie King, Tin Roof BBQ, Panera Bread, Blue Star Moms, Direct Energy, Porter Fire Department, Waste Management, and Humble Party Rentals for making this event a success.
