The Memory Walk which consisted of nearly 50 - 11X17 sheets of pictures from our his- tory albums which contained convention and hospitality pho- tos, were put together by Joan Scharsch and all were labeled. Collecting an extra $100 for being Saturday’s top qualifier, Tennelle never lost the lead throughout Sunday’s match play finals, los- ing only one match on the day. Tennelle stated upon her vic- tory, “I would like to thank Brunswick for supplying me with a great arsenal of equip- ment. I would also like to thank Tom Cristi and Craig Goodman of Santa Clarita Lanes for host- ing the event. Big thanks to my husband, Jason, and my mom, Mary Grijalva, for coming out to watch me bowl the finals”. Using her Absolute Inferno, Strike Zone, Ambush, and Target Zone this weekend, there didn’t seem to be any big turning point for Tennelle over the course of the weekend. She bowled great from the beginning till the end, with just one sub-200 game of 192. Staying consistent and pick- ing up spares led to all other games over 230. Another weekend of great bowling by Tennelle, all of us with the WWPB congratulate her on her 7th WWPB victory! Tennelle remarked, “This was a good tune up of games in before the USBC Queens in Reno” where she will be defend- ing her title. When not bowling and/or conducting bowling les- sons, Tennelle works for Barry Asher’s Custom Embroidery and Champions Bowling & Em- broidery. Saturday evening, Tom Cristi and his staff hosted another one of their wonderful pro-am events, where every participant took home a wonderful raffle prize. Upon the introduction of all of the lady pros, Tom sur- prised each pro with a basket of cookies and sweet treats. Craig Goodman then took the floor to further surprise the lady pros with a “Last Pro Standing” stint. Each pro threw a shot, those that struck kept bowling – with the winner to collect an extra large basket of cookies and things for her entire pro-am pair! Good food and good fun had by all! Our pro-am also featured a very special young man, Mateo Franco. Mateo is a local boy who is battling leukemia. Santa Clarita Lanes and the Western Women Professional Bowlers treated Mateo and his family to this special pro-am event and presented him with a pin autographed by all the lady pros and Dodger tickets for him and his family provided by Budget Rentals. As we vacated our Califor-nia WBA and ceded to the newUSBC organization the feelingwas - what next? We are one ofonly five states who are merged. We all hope for the best but anempty feeling was in the pit ofmost people’s stomach as to thefuture of our state organization.

CWBA Publicity Committee

Re-Creation, directed by JayMuller, brought a special flavorto the evening and concluded theshow by singing our song andthe audience joined in for thesecond time around.

The evening was attended bypast board members, VIP’s, Starsof Tomorrow, Distinguished Ser-vice honorees, Hall of Famemembers and special guests in-cluding John Berglund, Execu-tive Director of the BowlingProprietor’s Association ofAmerica. The 335 who stayedfor dinner were entranced as theyentered the Terrace room over-whelmed by the awesome ice-carving that loomed high and vis-ible in every corner. All clam-ored to have their pictures takenusing the carving as a backdrop. It consisted of a huge lit ball, withgolden poppy inserted, andbowling pin complete with redstripes. Tables were set withwhite and orange linens. Four11 X 17 place mats that con-tained more historical data saton each of the 35 tables. All ofthese memory items were for

anyone who wished to take them.Round mirrors with votive lightsadorned the center of the tableswith a clear glass vase that helda bouquet of silk poppies. Royalblue ribbon with silver scriptwhich said “California Women’sBowling Association” and“1924-2006” trailed each vase.

All dinner guests were treatedto a chocolate sucker hand madeby Charlene Hedberg and crewand were wrapped and tied withthat same ribbon. The suckerwas round (in three differentcolors) and had a bowling pinwhich bore the traditional redstripe. Making 350 of theseleft the gals done with chocolatefor awhile.

Joan Feinblum did a skilledjob of dinner seating and evenmanaged to handle all the hardluck stories of “I lost it”, “I for-got,” “can you fit in one moreperson?” etc. Everyone on thewaiting list was accommodated. As VIP’s checked in each wasgiven a special VIP ribbon.Champagne was poured exactlyat 7:15 P.M. and Phil Severancegave the toast lauding those whobuilt the foundation of CWBAand perpetuated its purpose, and wished good luck to the newUSBC organization.

An excellent dinner was en-joyed by all topped off by abeautiful dessert and none wentto waste. Prior to dessert, Presi-dent Linda Johnson introducedspecial guests.

This was our special goodbyeto our beloved CWBA. It wasbitter sweet but everyone leftwith a feeling that the CaliforniaWBA was indeed special.

Special Notice. Due to a Robbery (being robbed) on my return home Sunday Night after the Memorial event I am unable to write a full story on the Big Memorial Event at West Covina Lanes. Bothbriefcases were taken by a masked man with a weapon who had undoubtedly followed us home to my house and had undoubtedly been at the tournament planning the robbery!

I cannot stress to you that you can never NEVER, be too Cautious and Attentive in what you do. People like these lowlifes prey on the Good People who try and make an honest living and work hard indoing so! It was an enormous loss. All checks for the West Covina Event had to be stopped per the Fraud Division of Bank America. All Checks will however be paid in full this week. If You are a bowlerwho received or cashed a check in the event please contact me at the ABTA 562-868-7164 for a full and prompt payment or come to Mission Hills Bowl Saturday to pick up/settle your checks.

Due to taking the Checks, Cash and all tournament information, matches, etc. Camera, Phones etc. I have tried to make the story as best I can.If You know who did this please contact me and you will be rewarded and these Criminals will be put to prison! We do not need these people in Society!

CERRITOS WEEKLYChris EguilosStrong From

Start To Finishby Jaime Ferry

C E R R I T O S — S t r i k i n gForce’s Chris Eguilos has be-come quite the “AlleyCat” atCerritos Lanes. Weeknights youare likely to find him on the lanespracticing while dad, Danny, bowls league. Well, payoff hasbeen rapid as this 137 averagebowler showed up blazing forposition round. Sitting in 4th

place in Match Point, Chris bul-lied his way to 2nd seed postinggames of 175,189 and 163, win-ning all three points. It didn’tstop there, as Chris stepped upin match play to shoot 201 and197 and earn the “B” divisioncrown. Practice to improve –“what a concept”. Nice jobChris.

No stranger to high scoring,Lizzy Raya had herself a prettygood week also, with a 202/560scratch series. Terrence Lowebreaks through again this weekwith a 200 in game one. Makingit to print again, MaricioCamacho (103 ave.) put up anexcellent 154 scratch game. Andtwo-handed bowler, Eric Hefner(111 ave.) hit 164 in his first.

Rookies of the week wouldhave to be Breanna McIlroy andBobby Vasquez. Breannatopped all scoring categorieswith her 146/ 385. WhileBobby’s 131 scratch game, 53pins over his 78 pin average, leadthe boys.

Top game and series in theLil Raiders was JameshiaGaddy’s 103/ 194. On the boy’sside, Jason Villa neared the cen-tury mark with a 98/185.

Senior boys cleared the deckbig-time. Ryan Cunningham’s269 was tops – 89 pins over hisaverage. Jared Lawrence posted251/ 661 and Kyle Jacobowitzhit a 231/ 633. Jaime Ferry ledthe girls scratch effort with 217/606, followed by KathyLiberatore 215/ 535. Hats off toBrandon Shelton’s 213 scratchgame – 46 pins over his average.

Immediately following leagueplay, Striking Force A and B di-visions and Senior girls were setup for roll-off matches. Seniorboys will roll-off during sweeps.

Striking Force “B” Divisionsaw first time participant, KimEberle fall to Karen Dimayuga,123 to 92 in match one. In atight match two, Karen snuck byMan Rou Kuo, 185-173. Karenthen stepped into the lion’s den, when Chris Eguilos slung an ex-cessive 201-106 victory. Topseed, Bennett Trotter put up agood effort, but fell to the “toohot” Chris Eguilos 197-117.

“A” Division competitionstarted with a two-frame roll-offbetween Lizzy Raya and JohnElston Jr. to determine 3rd & 4th

seeds. John-John took matterswell in hand with a terrific “off-the-sheet” demonstration. As 4th

seed Lizzy met Jason Ito inmatch one. Un-phased by theroll-off loss to John, she struckoften and moved past Jason,215-178. In match two, there’sthat man again, John Elston Jr.The two battled to the end withLizzy taking a narrow 180-172win. In the semi-final match,Lizzy faced Andrew Arellano. As if the last match wasn’t closeenough, Lizzy prevailed by thenarrowest of margins againstAndrew, 178-176. Waiting attop seed, Steve Bojorguez knewhe was up against a fierce com-petitor in Lizzy, so he broughtit and posted a 213 -154 victoryto win his first match pointchampionship.

Senior girls match one sawKathy Liberatore and ChristinaHefner in a low scoring affair, with Kathy advancing 159-137.

Iraq Bowlers SeekPeace In Mid-East?

by Frank KietzLAKE FOREST — Bowling

is a peacful sport. The AMF-Bowling World Cup sanctionedby the Federation InternationalDes Quilleurs, has been activesince 1965 starting in JackMurphy’s 12-lane StillorganBowl (Dublin, Ire.) with 22 na-tions participating.

Orange County Register re-cently printed a Chicago TribuneIraq war story by AamerMadnani, bowlers battle to keeptheir sport rolling.

Apparently Bagdad had a fewten-pin centers, had a bowlingfederation, had many enthusias-tic sport fans and the Iraq Olym-pic Committee budgeted$50,000 for their 2006 nationalbowling team.

In the 60s Kuwait was one ofthe first to send a FIQ sanc-tioned representative. By 1972all continents with ten-pin cen-ters had reps. K. Kiani, Iranplaced third and in 1988Mohamed Khalifa, United ArabEmirates won the Guadalahara,Mex. title.

The media tried to create prob-lems but the players ignoredthem. They loved amateur ten-pins and were more interestedin improving their game.

Part of the $50,000 was tomaintain what’s left of thedilapilated Al-Gazal center. They have a star, Maher AbdulHussein, their Federation’schampion. He is currently inAmman, Jordan practicing andmanaging a center.

LaythTommy Thomas theFederation president said, “If wecould only have something likethey have in Amman, I know ourbowlers could raise the Iraqi flagover the Arab world.”

This writer since 1968 cov-ered 23 BWCs. Bowlers justseemed to be happy, friendly, left their hostility at home. Fromevents with only 20 nations thenext “Cup” in South America isexpected to lure nearly 100 na-tions.

Yes, maybe we could playgames, bowling games, and solveour problems peacefully.

There seems to be some Ira-qis that think games, sports canhelp world peace — $50,000worth?

We can do better than that!

A Letter Of ThanksFrom An Iraq Soldier

by Sue MellottFOUNTAIN VALLEY —

Last December there was a BVLproject advertised in a magazineto give our troops over in Iraq, achance out of a busy schedule,to enjoy some fellowship time.

As you may recall, BVL wasoffering a kit of bowling para-phernalia. Tustin Lanes leaguecoordinator Jean Farr and thebowlers who bowl in leaguesduring the week, contributedenough money to send ourtroops a total of 12 kits.

I would like to share with youa letter addressed to Jean andfriends, from one of the soldiersthanking her and the bowlers fortheir support.Jean Farr and Friends,

I just got the bowling set in themail a couple of days ago. We’vebeen bowling non-stop. We re-ally needed it; we’ve been herefor 10 months. Our combat op-erations have been extremelyslow and our morale has beenreally low. We’ve had a few guysdie by vehicle roll-overs and bydirect enemy engagement. Yourgift is very appreciated. Thanksfor your support. Sgt. Lampe And the 2-504 boys

This letter is at the front deskin Tustin Lanes so everyonemay read it and know that theirhearts and dedication to BVL waswell received. I know ourbowlers won’t forget our troops, and let’s all work harder to helpour soldiers who are giving theirlives so we may live free!

Tribute To Ted Evans

On May 26, 2006, many of us at Linbrook Bowl lost a good friend. In 1958 a 40-lane bowling centeron the corner of Brookhurst and Lincoln opened its doors to the public. Along with it came the hiringof a young man named Ted Evans.

Over the past 48 years, Ted has made so many life long friends and made a lasting impression on somany bowlers. He was more than just a great manager, he was truly your friend. Whether it was a kisson the cheek or a friendly handshake, Ted really made you feel like this was your home.

Ted dealt with several hundred league bowlers on a nightly basis, and knew them all by first name.I still believe many of them enjoyed talking with Ted more than bowling itself.

Color Of Money was Ted’s favorite event. While this weekly event begins Saturdays at 9:00 P.M.,Ted was checking people in as early as 3:00 P.M. Many regulars drove long distances just to bowl, andno matter how full the event, Ted would always find you a spot.

The last few months, Ted worked through tremendous physical pain, yet he never complained onetime, and never took a sick day. Anybody that kew Ted would know he would want you to celebrate hislife, the moments you spent with him, the memories that will last forever. While Ted is no longer withus, his spirit always will be.

Thank you Ted for everything; having had the opportunity to work with you through the years hasbeen something we will treasure forever. It’s hard to put into words what you mean to us, but simplyyou are the best.

The Linbrook family passes along its thoughts and prayers to Ted’s wife Phyllis and the entire Evansfamily.

Memorial Service will be at Linbrook Bowling Center, June 3rd @ 1:00 P.M.
